Sun Life Boosts Healthcare Access for OFWs and Seafarers

Protecting one’s health is a priority for many Filipinos. After all, it is key to achieving their goals and living their best lives. An illness can not only derail plans but also impact one's overall well-being and outlook on life.

This is especially true for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). They move abroad to make a livingband support their families; however, they must also cope with living far from home and adapting to new cultures and environments. Should they get sick, it can disrupt their work abroad or it can be a possible reason for them to be sent back abruptly, which can have significant consequences on their finances, their family’s goals such as building their own house or business, and ultimately, derail their dream of coming home for good.

“There is a lot at stake for OFWs if their health is compromised. Unfortunately, for many of them, they do not have healthcare coverage when they come home for vacation or when their employment contract ends,” Sun Life Philippines Client Segment Marketing Head Cary Casipit said. “This prompted Sun Life to explore possible solutions.”

The result is Sun Life OFW Health Protect, a life insurance and comprehensive health protectionnplan designed specifically for Overseas Filipinos.

Sun Life OFW Health Protect provides coverage throughout an OFW’s health journey - from prevention to diagnosis, to treatment and rehabilitation - up to age 100.

The prevention feature would enable OFWs to proactively maintain their health through an annual physical examination, specific vaccinations, or teleconsultations. The insured can avail one of these benefits starting on the 2nd policy year until the 6th policy year.

In case the insured is diagnosed with any of over 100 critical illnesses covered, Sun Life OFW Health Protect can help fund the treatment or other medical expenses through a lump sum cash benefit. The plan also comes with a booster benefit for specific cancer conditions, which provides additional cash benefits to help with medical expenses including hospitalization, follow-up care, and even home recovery.

Furthermore, as early as age 65, 5% of the policy’s face amount may be received the by insured in advance for eight consecutive years. This ensures that the OFW would have funds to enjoy upon their retirement, when they are finally home for good.

“As OFWs work hard to care for their families, Sun Life is here to care for them as well,” Casipit said. “It is our hope that with Sun Life OFW Health Protect, they can be in the best of health as they work hard to achieve their dreams and secure their future.”

Disclaimer: Overseas Filipino clients may avail of Sun Life solutions while they are physically present in the Philippines.

Sun Life Foundation Champions Sustainability with Back-to-Back Coastal Cleanups

Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation) scored a win for environmental sustainability with back-to-back coastal cleanups, organized in coordination with Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST).

Volunteers from Sun Life scoop up bags of trash along the beach during the clean-up efforts.

Over 170 Sun Life volunteers joined the activities at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP) and Barangay San Rafael in Noveleta, Cavite, collecting over 400 sacks of waste with a total weight of 2.264 metric tons.

Regular coastal cleanups such as this activity help mitigate these threats.

As the philanthropic arm of Sun Life Philippines, the oldest and longest-standing standing life insurance company in the country, the Sun Life Foundation conducts many volunteer drives that hundreds of Sun Life leaders, employees, and advisors join each year. “Volunteerism is a key aspect of Sun Life’s culture,” said Valerie Pama, Sun Life Philippines Chief Asset

HOW TO MAXIMIZE DOLLAR ASSETS AMID INTEREST RATE CUTS

Maximizing dollar assets can seem like a challenge in the current economy.

Analysts anticipate the central bank rate cuts to continue both in the United States and the Philippines, which means interest rates from bank products, such as US dollar time deposits, could go back to pre-pandemic levels where it was only less than 1%.

Meanwhile, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has already reduced the interest rates by another 25 basis points in October, with the next expected cut in December 2024 due to the favorable global and local inflation rates.

With interest rates decreasing at a steady pace, guaranteed returns are also expected to go down in parallel.

To help address this, JJ Book, New Market Development Head of Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc., encourages capitalizing on financial products that can help maximize yields.

“One such product is Sun Dollar Maximizer (ProIncome),” Book says.

A limited-time offer product, Sun Dollar Maximizer (ProIncome) is a single-pay, US dollar-denominated VUL plan that provides insurance coverage equal to at least 125% of the Single Premium, and linked to a structured investment that matures after 7 years. It offers fixed annual income payouts of 3.5% for 7 consecutive years and gives back 100% of the Single Premium at maturity.

“This product offers a unique combination of stable returns and security,” Book said. “With the Sun Dollar Maximizer (ProIncome), you can enjoy potential growth of your wealth, even as interest rates decline. This, while also ensuring your loved ones’ financial well-being with the life insurance component.”

Sun Dollar Maximizer (ProIncome) can be availed of via a hassle-free application and policy approval through Sun Life’s Guaranteed Insurability Offer, subject to terms and conditions.

The product is available until November 18, 2024 only or until the total allocation has been sold out, whichever comes earlier.

To learn more about the Sun Dollar Maximizer (ProIncome), visit  http://sunlife.co/sundollarmaxpro or talk to a Sun Life Advisor today.

Disclaimer: The fixed annual income payouts are not guaranteed and are subject to note issuer risk. The product is linked to the note issued by Nomura International Funding Pte. (Nomura), a global financial services group established in 1925 that provides retail, asset and wealth management, merchant and investment banking, research, and other financial services.

Hoops + Health: Sun Life and Beyond Sport Inspire Over 14,000 Kids and Communities Across Asia to Embrace an Active Lifestyle

A 3x3 basketball game at the refurbished court of the Legacy of Light Village, Calauan, Laguna

Sun Life’s Hoops + Health program, in partnership with global sport-for-social-change organization Beyond Sport, has helped over 14,000 kids and communities get active in 2024.

Rolled out in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, the program focused on three key areas – improving access to physical activity with renovated basketball courts in underprivileged areas; engaging local communities, coaches, and Sun Life employees through court opening events, volunteering days, and workshops; and inspiring young people to be more active through free-to-access basketball sessions.

Following the 2022 research by the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance which found a worrying lack of physical activity amongst children aged 6-17 across Asia, this prompted a need to improve health outcomes for underserved youth.

In the Philippines, Sun Life transformed the basketball court in the Legacy of Light Village in Calauan, Laguna. The court underwent significant refurbishment work including surface repairs, installation of durable tiled court covering, and the construction of a new fence. To date, the Hoops + Health program has supported 3,490 young Filipinos.

"At Sun Life, we recognize the vital role that sport plays in keeping young people active, healthy, and engaged,” said David Broom, Chief Client and Distribution Officer at Sun Life Asia. “Our Hoops + Health program is all about creating spaces where everyone can access coaching and training. We hope these revitalized basketball courts will continue to be the beating heart of these local neighbourhoods, as we make positive strides towards nurturing a healthier, more active generation in the Philippines and across Asia.”

Fred Turner, Executive Director at Beyond Sport, emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of sports, "Sport is not only a fantastic way to stay active and healthy, but it also imparts valuable life skills that extend beyond the court. However, the ability to access these benefits hinges on the availability of proper coaching infrastructure and facilities. The collaborative Hoops + Health program is dedicated to empowering local communities through sport, providing children and adults with safe and functional spaces for learning and development."

“It is our core purpose as a company to help people live healthier lives,” said Carla Gonzalez-Chong, Chief Client Experience and Marketing Officer at Sun Life Philippines. “By encouraging active lifestyles, Sun Life hopes to create ripple effect of positive health outcomes for more generations.”
