CELEBRITIES AND THEIR TOD’S

Take a cue from these gorgeous stars who know a thing or two when it comes to looking fab.

Taking the limelight is the lovable Emma Stone carrying her Tod’s Signature Clutch in silver to the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Second on the list is Robin Wright donning her Tod’s Signature Clutch, also in silver, when she attended the 100th Annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington D.C. Spotted in a similar style as these two, leading ladies Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz dressed up with their favorite Tod’s arm candies at the Cannes Film Festival. Uma Thurman arrived in style at Cannes with her Tod’s D-Cube Travel bag in white leather and orange suede. Boyz II Men LIVE in Manila this September 17, 2014

Ovation Productions, the premier concert promotions and productions company in the country, presents Boyz II Men LIVE in Manila this September 17, 2014! The brilliant and immensely talented group is currently composed of baritone Nathan Morris with tenors Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris. In 2003, past member Michael McCary left the group because of health predicaments. The insistent popular demand in the Philippines for Boyz II Men magnetized the American R&B vocal group to once again grace the archipelago for the fourth time this coming September.

Filipinos possess an unwavering love for romantic ballads, and Boyz II Men—the ones behind soulful tracks such as “I’ll Make Love to You”, “End of the Road”, “On Bended Knee”, “Water Runs Dry”, “A Song For Mama”, “One Sweet Day” (with Mariah Carey), and “4 Seasons of Loneliness” among other hits —will more than satisfy this craving. The group is widely popular for touching the hearts of many through their powerful voices, heartwarming lyrics, and splendid harmonies. The group has also done recordings of Motown’s Greatest Hits, a CD of the greatest love ballads, and other covers of popular hits.

Boyz II Men’s vast success soared to great heights in the 1990s after releasing “End of the Road” which reached the top of the charts and conquered the number one place of Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks. This caused one of the best vocal groups to break Elvis Presley’s record of longevity in the charts. Boyz II Men wowed the world once more by breaking their own record with the songs "I'll Make Love to You" and "One Sweet Day" (with Mariah Carey), at fourteen and sixteen weeks respectively. The latter track still holds the all-time record for longevity in the Billboard Hot 100.

As one of the most massive names in R&B and a capella, Boyz II Men endeavored to put R&B back into the mainstream as it had been in the 1970s. The group has indubitably put a resonating impact on music and certainly brought back R&B to the popular scene. Boyz II Men garnered an astonishing cumulative 50 weeks on the number one spot of the Billboard Hot 100, a feat that only Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Mariah Carey have surpassed. This proves how impactful Boyz II Men’s music has become and how the power of their voices has shaped and defined a capella and R&B music.

Catch Boyz II Men live in Manila on September 17, 2014 8PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

LBC foundation, a supporter and believer of FutKal Field of Hope who are reaching out to the poor is hoping to go international with their "futkaleros".

Field of Hope, is a project aimed to help victims of the Yolanda tragedy recover, both mentally and emotionally, through "the beautiful game", football. Through sports, arts and music activities, and discipline, the program is giving children a new lease on life despite tragedy and poverty.

Futkaleros and coaches

FutKal has been implementing social development football programs in different provinces and regions since 2006. Through the years, the program has evolved and is now being praised for its recent efforts in Tondo, where they have trained a good number of Futkaleros. FutKal founder Pete Amores describes these children as ‘football enthusiasts that manifest a positive attitude and a purpose driven life.’

FutKal’s success on their “Kick for Life” program in Tondo has attracted the attention of the LBC Foundation, which prompted the latter to partner with them for “Field of Hope”. Nena Wuthrich, Executive Director of the LBC Foundation, hopes to achieve something equal to the success of “Kick For Life” or better with Field of Hope.

“Field of Hope is something that FutKal and LBC have been working on for quite a while,” said Wuthrich. “We saw the effect of FutKal’s programs on the kids in Tondo, and were hoping to inspire children affected by Yolanda from Tacloban in the same positive way,” she continued.

LBC Foundation and FutKal recently held an event at Blue Leaf Filipinas to show everyone how the programs are run. After a brief introduction, members of the press, special guests, and their children took part in an intense and fun football clinic with FutKal coaches, complemented by arts and music workshops.

“These programs are specially designed to appeal to the youth,” said Amores. “It gives them an outlet for their creativity and passion while teaching them the discipline they need for a better future,” he stressed.

“Aside from rebuilding homes and restoring livelihoods, we really want to help the children cope through post-traumatic stress therapy,” Wuthrich added. “This is all part of the LBC Foundation’s commitment in moving lives, businesses, and communities.”

Jake Gyllenhall is seeing his double in "Enemy"

What would you do if you discover someone who looks exactly like you?

The reality of finding your doppelganger or a mirror image or yourself is the intriguing premise of the upcoming psychosexual thriller ENEMY, released by Solar Pictures.

Based on the novel “The Double” by José Saramago, ENEMY tells the story of a university lecturer named Adam (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is nearing the end of a relationship with his girlfriend Mary (Melanie Laurent). One night, while watching a film, Adam spots a minor actor who looks just like him. Consumed by the desire to meet his double, Adam tracks down Anthony (Jake Gyllenhaal), an actor living with his pregnant wife Helen (Sarah Gadon) and engages him in a complex and dangerous struggle.

“In terms of finding a lead actor for these dual parts, I was looking for someone who I would be able to share creativity and collaborate with,” notes Academy Award Nominated director Denis Villeneuve (INCENDIES, PRISONERS).

“In Jake I found someone that was highly intelligent and creative. He had a beautiful vision for the characters. It’s always fantastic for a director when your lead actor is so good that you can just follow him instead of telling him where to go. I love that.”

“When Jake's name was first put on the table we immediately realized we needed him,” recalls ENEMY Spanish producer Miguel A. Faura. “Not only is he an extremely gifted actor capable of delivering the wide range of subtleties needed for these two roles, but he has always showcased his taste and love for art and cinema in each role he has taken on. When he said yes, we felt not only lucky, but reaffirmed about the inner quality of our project.”

“First and foremost I wanted to make this movie because I think Denis is an incredible filmmaker,” says Gyllenhaal. “I was really drawn to the incredible script which offered an interesting blueprint for what Denis wanted to do with this idea. When I first met with Denis and talked about the film, his idea of what it was and what he wanted it to be far surpassed what the script was saying.”

Gyllenhaal had the unique task of playing two different characters that become entwined in each other’s lives. As can be expected, there was a delicate dance involved in creating the similarities and differences between the two characters. Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal agreed early on that the differences between Adam and Anthony should lie in subtleties.

“There are so many ways that you can go with this movie and I think probably the hardest one, the most interesting one, was making Adam and Anthony as close to each other as possible,” notes Gyllenhaal. “There’s the world in which one character has a beard and the other one doesn't and one talks with a funny accent and the other one doesn't. That would have been an incredibly vain way of going about it and I think, in a way, that's exactly what this movie isn't about.”

“I made choices early on about the characters and, as a result, Adam and Anthony started to separate from each other. I knew that I had to fall in love with both of them and that there couldn't be any judgment for either of the characters even while being in the scene with the other one,” explains Gyllenhaal. “What’s interesting about playing two characters in the same scene is the literal comparison of what you’re doing. I actually created the character of Adam before Anthony even showed up on the scene and the first time I worked as Anthony was when he was right across from Adam.” The film centers on Adam’s psychological struggle and, as Gyllenhaal notes, the notion of struggle is very apparent in both Adam and Anthony. “These two characters are struggling with the same thing in a different way but inevitably one of them has to let go and give up in order for the other to survive. The question of which one it’s going to be is ultimately what the movie is about,” states Gyllenhaal.

Distributed by Solar Pictures, Enemy opens in cinemas on July 30, 2014.

Prepare for Hercules and his mercenaries

“HERCULES” AND HIS LOYAL CREW OF MERCENARIES

In the new epic action-adventure “Hercules,” “It doesn’t matter to the titular character if he’s the son of Zeus or not,” actor Dwayne Johnson reflects. “The only thing that matters to him is righting the wrongs of the past. But he has this band of brothers and sisters – and they are the ones who push Hercules to believe that he can be a better man.”

Joining Johnson in the film as his loyal crew are Ian McShane (“Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”), Rufus Sewell (“Legend of Zorro”), Aksel Hennie (“Headhunters”), Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (“Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”) and Reece Ritchie (“Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time”).

AMPHIARAUS/Ian McShane. The soothsayer Amphiaraus joins Hercules’ band of mercenaries as a much-needed spiritual adviser. Now, having seen a vision of his own future death, Amphiaraus fights without a drop of fear because he believes it is not yet his time. Ian McShane right away was drawn to the character. “He’s someone who says don’t blame the gods for the acts of man – you must take responsibility for your own fate,” he explains.

AUTOLYCUS/Rufus Sewell. Autolycus might lack for Hercules’ astonishing strength, but he has more than made up for it with the sharp blade of his wit, ultimately becoming Hercules’ master strategist. Rufus Sewell takes on the role of Hercules’ wisecracking friend. “Autolycus and Hercules go way back, and they've got each other's backs,” Sewell explains. “They have a kind of communication that goes beyond words. They've always worked together, and that's a source of great pride to Autolycus, that he knows Hercules better than anyone else.”

TYDEUS/Aksel Hennie. Mute Tydeus, the lone survivor of an onslaught on the city of Thebes, is loyal to Hercules, but when he is unleashed, the beast within can take over. Norwegian actor Aksel Hennie was intrigued by his character’s way of dealing with the world. “I love the fact that you have this character has all these feelings, and all this rage, but he’s not able to express that verbally. It gives him a mystique,” says the actor.

ATALANTA/Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. The archer Atalanta possesses the world-famous feminine strength of an Amazon – and owes Hercules a blood debt. Says Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, “Atalanta is the icon of strong women, so it took a bit of self-confidence to take that on. But the story was so good, an epic action blockbuster full of interesting characters with their own arcs and agendas, it was irresistible. And it attracted great actors which made it even more thrilling.”

IOLAUS/Reece Ritchie. The mercenary Iolaus is Hercules’ cousin and the storyteller who has spread his legend across the land. He is played by Reece Ritchie, who made his debut in Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 B.C.” and played the role of Bis in “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” Ritchie says of Iolaus: “He’s always followed Hercules, but I don’t think he’s ever been on an adventure this big or incredible, and it gives him lots of new material for his stories. He is someone who is full of wonder, but he wants to prove himself as a worthy warrior also.”

The most towering myth of all time meets up with the mission of a real man leading a rag-tag band of warriors in “Hercules,” this summer’s action-adventure thriller that reveals the famed symbol of lion-hearted courage as he’s never been seen before: finding the hero’s heart that beats beneath his colossal image.

Opening across the Philippines on July 23 in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D cinemas, “Hercules” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
