COCA Restaurant celebrates one year at Skypark, SM Aura

COCA Restaurant at Skypark SM Aura Premier celebrates one year of good business last July 30, 2014 at the 5th level  and they have chosen to give back to the community by partnering with Life Project 4 Youth (LP4Y). The restaurant has been well-known for its “Suki” steamboat dining. COCA started out with a 20 seater at Soi Dejo, Thailand by Mr. Srichai Phanphensophon and his wife, Mrs. Patama. I was lucky enough to be invited and taste the Thai-Chinese fusion here in SM Aura branch.

The name “COCA” is derived from Mandarin “kekou” which means “appetizing.” COCA Restaurant is well known for Thai-style “Suki” steamboat dining. It is a Thai variant of hot pot, where dining clients can cook vegetables, meat, and noodles in a steaming hot broth. From the restaurant’s Thai roots, Coca Restaurant has later on become more diverse with their food as they created a fusion between Thai and Chinese cuisine. It now has various branches in countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Laos, Vietnam, Korea, and the latest addition to the pack, Philippines.

This is how our  Emperor’s Platter with Ojiya (PHp 2750) looks like, it was a combination of vegetables, mushroom, and seafood (read: big crab)  You will dip cook everything in either tom yum soup (which is my favorite) and clear chicken broth in this pan (picture above)

The Emperor's Platter

Our waiter helped us cook everything , while other dishes were served such as these;

Sweet and sour pork (php 350.00)

Seafood Durian Spring Roll  (php 420.00)

Spicy Seafood Salad

This spicy salad is a combination of jelly fish and seafood among others and their special suki sauce. I love that they served this as an appetizer.

Galorgee (Small - php 250,00,  Large - php 450.00)
We ordered Galorgee or "palitaw" for you as our dessert. This is crispy to the bite with peanuts, sugar and sesame seed. This is made of crispy glutinous rice. Best to eat when served hot.

COCA Restaurant has the classic interior and ambience inside.  They have a wide selection of Thai-Chinese menu to choose from. What stands out for me is their Emperors Platter, but has a steep price tag. The catch is you dont have to fly to Thailand, Singapore or Japan just to have a dip of their menu.

In line with one year of good business, Coca Restaurant has partnered up with (LP4Y) to give back to the community. According to Coca Restaurant’s general manager, Ms. Karen Tanchanco-Caballero, “Business has been really well for the past year, and I think it’s the right time to give back to the community. This partnership with LP4Y, which gives the excluded youths a chance to build their careers and become more productive members of society, is a perfect way of giving back.

Aurelie Garancher of (LP4Y) told “We are very happy and excited in this partnership with Coca Restaurant. We see this as a chance to help more youths gain experience and discover possible hidden potentials. Together with Coca Restaurant, we hope to help them build their career as much as we can.”

Aiko Melendez on her much awaited comeback for Cinemalaya 2014: Asintado

Aiko Melendez makes her biggest comeback on the big screen via the Cinemalaya 2014 entry Asintado. This is her first movie with Cinemalaya. which tackles a mother's love for her child, how she forced to make one of the biggest and most difficult decisions of her life for the sake of her children. She hopes to win the coveted Best Actress in the film. When asked, whats the best scene that would earn her the award, she told the media " yung prayers ko sa later part ng movie, bukod sa sobrang putik, nakababad po ako sa ilog ng matagal,  na umiiyak, na nagsasalita ng may punto, ayun po yung best scene na pinalakpakan nila Direk sa akin". Aiko Melendez was a personal choice of Direk Louie to play Julia in Asintado.

Asintado (‘Between the Eyes’)  is directed by Louie Ignacio, and is competing in Cinemalaya’s Directors’ Showcase. Produced by Ferdinand Lapuz and Dennis Evangelista, with a story and screenplay by Soccorro Villanueva, it stars, aside from Aiko, Gabby Eigenmann, Miggs Cuaderno, Rochelle Pangilinan, Jake Vargas, Benjie Felipe, Madz Nicholas, Maita Ejercito and Jak Roberto.(‘Between the Eyes’)

Set against the backdrop of the Taong Putik festival of the farming community of Bibiclat, Nueva Ecija.  Asintado is about a mother of two (Julia, played by Aiko). When her older son (Jake Vargas) gets involved with a drug ring and botches a job, he brings down on himself and their town the wrath of drug ring boss Carias (Gabby Eigenmann). To escape Carias’s wrath, Julia is forced to turn to her autistic younger son (Miggs Cuaderno) who has an unimaginable talent as a skilled marksman who can shoot right between the eyes, hence the title of the film. The question is, does Julia risk her younger son’s safety and life to save the other?

Asintado is Aiko’s first movie in five years. According to her, the script was the main reason why she accepted it, plus the fact that she was handpicked by Direk Louie for the role of Julia.

Both as a mother and as an actress, Aiko found the story extremely compelling so far as the moral dilemma it presents to viewers. “Yung moral issue here is bakit in-allow ni Julia na turuan ang isang anak niya ng isang crime, pero lalabas din dito yung love of a mother for her children. So the argument will start paglabas sa sinehan na you’re thinking, would you be on Julia's side or sa isang side, it will make you think.”

The message of the film is that “the love of a mother is unconditional. Ang ina, magagawa ang mga bagay na di pa nya nagagawa para sa mga anak nya. Kahit ang mga bagay na ayaw nyang gawin basta para sa mga anak nya gagawin nya lahat lahat.”

Aiko turns in a brilliant performance as Julia, and already, is being talked about as a contender for Cinemalaya Best Actress honors alongside Nora Aunor. But whether she wins or not is immaterial. The mere fact that her name is being spoken of in the same breath as Nora’s is honor enough for her, says Aiko, who gave her all to the role. “When I accepted Asintado, siyempre may pressure ng kaunti because I’m playing lead again and that comes with a big responsibility. I needed to really study my lines by heart and was open to almost all suggestions just to make a particular scene perfect. So whether I win or not, okay lang. An award is just a bonus and an affirmation of one’s hard work.”

Electrolux’s annual clothes donation drive is back with a twist. This year, Electrolux will continue to collect and wash your donated pre-loved clothes, but will add a personal touch to the advocacy.

From simply collecting pre-loved clothes for calamity-stricken survivors, Electrolux, in partnership with Gawad Kalinga’s Trese, will add extra warmth by transforming unusable donated clothes into quilts for new born babies from orphanages and other communities.

Quilts are traditionally made to preserve a story told by each piece of fabric sewn to form it.In Delightful-E Simple to Share, these quilts will document a story of underprivileged moms helping new-borns in need. This new twist to Electrolux’s advocacy aims to show that sharing goes beyond donating clothes.“Through Delightful-E Simple, we hope to mark the difference between giving and sharing. For when we share, we freely impart a piece of ourselves—our time, effort, and concern. Hence, we are able to give more,” explains Pionilla.

THE ACTION-THRILLER “LUCY” STARS SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Portraying strong, unique female characters on the big screen is always a welcome challenge for Scarlett Johansson. So when casting his latest action-thriller “Lucy,” and writer-director Luc Besson needed to find an actress who could be believable as extremely vulnerable, as well as superpowered, when her exposure to an illicit substance inadvertently makes her acquire incredible skills, Johansson quickly came to mind.

Producer Virginie Besson-Silla describes the unlikely heroine of this story: “Lucy is an average girl who’s having fun with her friends in Asia, and there’s a lot of partying going on. She’s discovering life, but she’s going to discover it the hard way…and go much further than she would ever expect.”

For the role, Besson and his producer reached out to Scarlett Johansson, who has starred in intimate films such as “Lost in Translation” and “Her,” as well as action blockbusters including “Iron Man 2,” “The Avengers” and, most recently, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
Besson was impressed by the actress’ discipline. He explains that she was precise and professional from the get-go: “When we first met, Scarlett had read the script and I enjoyed the way she talked about it. She was excited for the right reason, which was the story. At that moment, it was a done deal for me. She was definitely the one.”

Johansson explains that one of her interests in portraying Lucy is based on the fact that the character “is in a transient phase in her life when we find her. She’s figuring out who she is, and she’s feeling like she should probably get her life on track.” The actress was not only attracted to the material, but to Besson’s vision. She notes: “The film poses some complex existential questions. It would have been hard to imagine how the script has evolved because so much of that is Luc’s vision. Anything I could imagine the film to look like, just from reading the descriptions in the script, pales in comparison to the actual life that Luc breathed into this project.”

Johansson acknowledges that even though she was initially disoriented by the screenplay’s nonlinear structure, she knew that she could trust the director. Quite familiar with Besson’s work, she cast aside caution and signed on to the film. “This is actually what drew me to this project,” she insists. “I had to trust Luc’s vision. I remember meeting him and he said, ‘You have to trust that I know what this is about because it can be vague at times. But if you see what I’m seeing, you’ll believe in it.’ So, I took a leap of faith. He’s a formidable guy who knows what he sees in his mind and wants that vision to be executed perfectly.”

Everyone involved in the production acknowledges that Lucy was a highly demanding role. Still, Johansson went beyond everyone’s expectations. Commends Besson-Silla: “It was all the more difficult, as Lucy starts off as a plain girl and turns into, as it were, a superhero. She goes through so much. Scarlett was able to take that journey easily.”

With such a clear vision of his protagonist, Besson was able to devise a method to help his leading lady get in character. He explains: “We created something very funny, which Scarlett had on her wall, to allow her to understand what reactions I wanted from her when I asked her to play, say, 25 percent, or 50 percent, or 70 percent of her brainpower.

“For every 10 percent, we charted out what you could do with that percentage— your level of knowledge and possibilities,” Besson continues. “It was a very good guide. Every morning she’d look at the chart to see which girl she had to play. If you look at the Lucy at the beginning and the Lucy at the end, they have little in common. When we arrived on set, Scarlett was exceptional. You can ask for whatever you want and she says, ‘Okay.’ She’s always willing to try.”

The actress admits that the most challenging part was to portray Lucy as a truly relatable character, despite the psychological and physical changes that she’s experiencing: “As the drug kicks in, Lucy gradually loses the ability to empathize and to feel pain. Even though she can delve deeply into someone’s memory and eventually control him physically, she doesn’t have any opinion. She loses her preconceived ideas or judgment about the other person. It was difficult to avoid making my performance flat and monotonous. You have to see the humanity behind her circumstances.”
Opening across the Philippines on August 06, “Lucy” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Ai-Ai delas Alas plays the role of a policewoman in "Ronda" for Cinemalaya 2014

I am always looking forward for Cinemalaya every year, actually all of us filipinos do. We are all excited for the indie films' story plot, (what lessons to be learned at the end of the film) and who will made it to the best actor category.  I made a list on what to watch and I included Ronda,  I would love to see Ms. Ai-ai delas Alas tackle the role of a policewoman, how subdued her acting is in this indie film.

Cinemalaya 2014 entry Ronda held its presscon on July 25, 2014 at Tiago Restaurant. Ms. Ai-ai delas Alas was excited for an acting award for the said movie.  She co-produced the movie and finished the indie film for seven days. "Yung ma-nominate ako dito sa movie ay  matutuwa na ako, yung manalo ako ay bonus na yun. Sana nga ma-nominate ako sa Urian, wala pa kong Urian, merun na ako sa Famas at MMFF. Yung Urian kasi ay parang pang Oscars na yun". she told the media.

In the successful ‘Tanging Ina’ movies, Comedy Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas played a mother who survived life’s trials with a lot of humor. Now, she takes on a different and more challenging mother role in Ronda, a finalist in the New Breed category of the 2014 Cinemalaya Film Festival.
Directed by Nick Olanka - whose past works have included mainstream films like ‘Cinco’ and TV shows like ‘E-Boy’ and ‘Apoy sa Dagat’ - and written by Adolf Alix Jr. and Jerome Zamora,

Ronda is the story of a policewoman whose job is to patrol the dangerous and seedy streets of Manila (a familiar setting for most indie films), and who finds herself faced with a unique dilemma when she has to arrest her own son for killing his girlfriend.

Ai-Ai is also the film’s co-producer. She has produced and co-produced other films before (the latest was ‘Kung Fu Divas’, co-starring Marian Rivera), but this is her first venture into indie filmmaking, both as producer and actress.

In both areas, she learned a lot. “Hindi na bago sa akin ang pag-produce, pero itong indie film, mas okay ito kasi mas mura, unlike sa mainstream, P5 million ang pinakamababang percent,” says Ai-Ai, who is also appearing in a Cinemalaya entry for the first time.

In terms of acting, Ai-Ai also learned something new. Because she does mostly comedy films, she is used to sometimes overplaying to the camera, to large gestures and what is occasionally called ‘overacting.’ But in Ronda, with its serious subject matter, Direk Nick advised Ai-Ai to underplay it instead. “Ang laki ng difference ng indie sa mainstream (in terms of acting),” says Ai-Ai. “Ang instruction ni Direk Nick sa akin, ‘wag akong aanggulo at aarte na artista. Less is more. Dapat all-natural.”

Ronda also stars Perla Bautista, Bernardo Bernardo, Menggie Cobarrubias, Carlo Aquino, Carlos Morales, Cogie Domingo, Mon Confiado, Moi Bien, DM Sevilla, Kiko Matos and Julian Trono, with the special participation of Cesar Montano and Angeli Bayani.

And speaking of Cesar Montano, Ai-Ai’s character has a love scene with him which she considers one of her highlights and the most challenging parts of making Ronda. “Ang pinaka-challenging sa akin dito is of course the love scene with Cesar, na may konting boobs na nakita — pero konting-konti lang, may bra naman — and ‘yung malayo ang tinakbo ko, sobrang hirap, naka-Take 4 ako, pagkatapos n’on, ayoko na tumakbo. Sa acting, ang madaling mahirap din, wala ka masyadong dialogue but iaarte mo sa mata lang and silently, umaakting ka.”

Fortunately, her director guided her all the way. “He’s a very cool director,” she says of Nick Olanka, with whom she also got to work for the first time. “No pressure.”

Her mother character in Ronda is of course very different from the mother she played in the ‘Tanging Ina’ series. “Dito, as a mother, hindi ako martir ng kagaya sa Tanging Ina. Mas magaling akong pulis kesa magaling akong nanay,” she says.

Ai-Ai took her cue from the security detail she had following her most recent separation. “Kinopya ko lang ‘yung arte nung dating escort ko na PNP (Philippine National Police), hindi masyadong nagsasalita,” she laughs. “Astig lang.”

She believes that the film has an important message to send out to all mothers, which is that it is crucial “to know your children and have a good relationship and communication with them.”
Regardless of whether the film, or she personally, wins any awards in this year’s Cinemalaya race, Ai-Ai will consider it a memorable experience. In fact, she’s not even expecting to win anything.

“Ma-nominate lang ako, ok na and pag nanalo ng award, super-bonus na,” she says. “Pag gusto ni God na manalo ako, game na. At least kahit ano ang mangyari, na-experience ko makagawa ng indie film.”

Along with the other Cinemalaya 2014 films, Ronda will have different screenings at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Ayala Cinemas.
