The serious truth about COPD

I lost my grandfather to COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease when I was in high school. It was painful to see him go as he draw his last breath. That was his final goodbye, after pronouncing him dead three times for the same diagnosis. We wailed and cried for the first three failed pronouncements. So when the final goodbye went through, we ran out of tears. We prayed and recited a rosary instead. He smokes 4 sticks a day, drinks alcohol everyday when he was in his 40s. It was a lesson learned, I vowed I will never touch a stick of cigarette ever. I drink, occasionally though.

World COPD Day was observed last November 19, 2014 at the Isabela, Makati Shangri-la. Their guest speaker was Eric Quizon, who recounted the times with his beloved demise father-actor Dolphy who suffered from COPD.

COPD is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the 21st century. The Global Burden of Disease Study by the World Health Organization projected that COPD will become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020.(1)

In the Philippines, it ranks as the 7th leading cause of death with a prevalence rate of 13.8% in Manila.(2,3) Despite the high incidence of COPD in the Philippines, only 2% of the cases are diagnosed by doctors in contrast to the overall prevalence. (4)The cause of this under-diagnosis and under-treatment is probably due to lack of public health awareness of COPD in our country.

COPD is characterized by persistent airflow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lungs. Cigarette smoking continues to be identified as the most commonly encountered risk factor, accounting for 80-90% of cases. (6,7) Other risk factors that should be taken into account include air pollution,  exposure to certain dust, chemicals in the workplace, indoor air pollution from biomass cooking (i.e. firewood/charcoal), and heating in poorly ventilated dwellings. Only a few cases of COPD are caused by genetic condition.

A clinical diagnosis should be considered in any person 40 years old and above who has risk factors such as exposure to noxious particles or gases.  A COPD patient may not feel anything at the start and develop cough and sputum production during the mid to late stage of the disease.  Thus, high index of suspicion is needed for any person with risk factors. Spirometry is needed to make a confident diagnosis of COPD. It is one of the diagnostic tools that is often underutilized in the Philippines.  A person with risk factors and symptoms should ask his/her doctor about spirometry testing.

The impact of COPD is not only confined to its ill effects on the individual’s health but may also result in an economic and social burden that is both extensive and increasing.(6,7) There is a direct relationship between the severity of COPD and the cost of care.  In developing countries like the Philippines, COPD will certainly force two individuals to give up their work - the person afflicted with COPD and a family member who must now stay home to care for the sick individual. Given that people are often the most vital asset for developing nations, the indirect costs of COPD potentially pose a serious threat to their economies.

Appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions are needed to reduce the symptoms, frequency and severity of exacerbations and improve health status and exercise tolerance. Smoking cessation is without doubt still the single most effective way of reducing the risk of developing COPD and delaying its progression.

It is important to remember that for COPD patients, early detection of the disease and appropriate interventions are vital.  These can help slow down its advance and facilitate quality of life for the patient.  To quote 2014 World COPD Day’s theme:  IT’S NEVER TOO LATE….

adidas Originals once again collaborate with Tokyo’s NEIGHBORHOOD to bring another fresh take on classic sportswear for FW14. Strong seasonal hues breathe new life into timeless silhouettes, fusing casual and contemporary with traditional tailoring and construction. This latest collection, which features both footwear and apparel, pays regard to the enduring originality of the two brands. Collaborative branding through out portrays confidence in a clean collection which embodies both NEIGHBORHOOD's signature aesthetic and adidas Originals' sportswear heritage.

The long-term partnership between adidas and Neighborhood began in the 1980s when Neighborhood’s designer Shinsuke Takizawa was first introduced to adidas by RUN-D.M.C. The first milestone of a fruitful relationship blossomed in 2005 when Takizawa and adidas worked on the Consortium project, creating a version of the Superstars sneakers favoured by the aforementioned hip-hop trio.

“Creating a design that does not already exist was the original concept when adidas and I first worked together,” says Takizawa. “Our long-term relationship was forged based on mutual respect for product, innovation and reputation. To this day, that same concept is still at the core of our collaboration.”

Takizawa’s attention to detail, craftsmanship and unique sources of inspiration is evident in the new collection which combines strong seasonal hues with timeless silhouettes, while fusing casual and contemporary with traditional tailoring and construction.

Chris Pine exposes his funny side in "Horrible Bosses 2"

Chris Pine plays Rex Hanson , a joyful narcissist and a handsome villain to the "Horrible Bosses 2".
Action and dramatic actor Chris Pine (“Star Trek: Into Darkness”) exposes his funny side who has to contend with the giant shadow cast by his multimillionaire father, Bert (Christoph Waltz), in New Line Cinema’s hilarious comedy “Horrible Bosses 2.”

Pine cites some of the possible reasons for Rex’s volatile mental state. “Rex wants power and he gets continually emasculated by his distant, evil father, who is never satisfied with anything he does and seems not to care much for his privileged brat of a son. Poor Rex. He makes me laugh. He’s smart but he’s not all that self-aware, and he gets stranger and stranger as the story progresses.”

“We wanted a unique villain with a lot of contradictions and a great sense of humor, and he also had to be good-looking, dapper and cool because we liked the idea that our guys kind of have man-crushes on him a little bit,” says director Sean Anders. “You also get the feeling that on some level Rex really likes these guys and has a good time with them. Of course, he has to screw them over because that’s who he is, but at the same time I think he considers them his friends, and Chris got that crazy balance beautifully.”

Pine, who had been looking to do a comedy and responded in a big way to the “Horrible Bosses 2” script, took a purposefully relaxed approach as the fourth to an already precision-calibrated threesome. “They all take it seriously but they also know how to play. My prescription was to stay loose, hang with the guys and follow the music of the scene,” he says, which gave them a different energy to play against.

Those inclined to judge Rex too harshly should just look at what he comes from: Bert Hanson, a man who, by his own satisfied admission, makes new enemies every day. “What I like about Bert,” Anders offers, “is that this guy who comes in and totally destroys their lives probably only thought about it for 11 seconds because, to him, it’s just business.”

Having cast Christoph Waltz as the quintessential villain, the director admits, “It was a bit daunting, bringing him into some of these silly scenarios, because it’s impossible not to be mindful of those amazing, Oscar-winning dramatic roles he’s most famous for. But that’s precisely why he was right for Bert. His job here was to be the heavy. Had it been someone else who didn’t have Christoph’s presence, Bert wouldn’t have been as threatening.”

Waltz didn’t need to play funny because the humor of his scenes sparked from playing it straight. After all, it’s Bert’s casual cruelty that drives Nick, Dale and Kurt to retaliation, not to mention the depths of depravity to which his heartlessness goads his own son.
“My part is fairly straightforward and serious, but it gives them the opportunity to spring into action, like the sprocket in a mechanism,” says Waltz. “Comedy is all about timing, tempo and rhythm. In this case, my character is a vehicle for these fabulously funny people, and that’s what makes the machinery work. These guys have a great energy that is constantly running. It’s a fascinating process to watch.”

“Horrible Bosses 2” is the follow-up to the 2011 hit comedy “Horrible Bosses” and reunites Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as everyone’s favorite working stiffs: Nick, Dale and Kurt.

Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick (Bateman), Dale (Day) and Kurt (Sudeikis) decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

Jennifer Aniston and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx also reprise their “Horrible Bosses” starring roles, while Chris Pine and Oscar winner Christoph Waltz star as new adversaries standing between the guys and their dreams of success.

Opening across the Philippines on Nov. 26, “Horrible Bosses 2” is a New Line Cinema Presentation distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

At dahil property ito, wala silang kaba na mawawala ang investment nila kasi kung kailangan talaga, they can easily sell it for a good profitable price. When ask how can we empower our modern day heroes, the OFWs? Vic adds. "We can empower our modern heroes, the OFWs, by educating them on the proper way of using the fruits of their labor. Hindi puro bili ng luho o pure ipon lang. We have to reward their efforts by giving them a chance to live the good life, We can only do this if we teach them how to make their money work for them, because all their lives, they have been working so hard for money."

Dr. Ned Sahin uses Google Glass for autism

Stone age surgeons “cured” certain diseases with a process called trephination. 10,000 years ago, primitive doctors bored holes in the head to cure patients. Now the “brains” of a computer are saving lives and preventing disease. Will robot takes the place of the doctor?

The world—renowned neuroscientist and futurist Dr. Ned Sahin shared his extensive knowledge and expertise at a recent event at the Mind Museum in Taguig, an Executive Talk organized by the First Pacific Leadership Academy (FPLA). Sahin discussed new applications of technologies in neuroscience in a talk entitled “The Era of Brain Technologies”, focusing mainly on the potential of new advancements such as wearable devices.

Creators hope that the advanced mind-reading technology will one day be able to teach people to improve their concentration and even assist people with disabilities.

The future is fast upon us. The technological marvels that once only existed within science fiction are no longer relegated to just movies and books. We live in an age where a plethora of knowledge and media are available at our fingertips in an instant, and where we can chat face-to-face with someone thousands of kilometers apart. This is a world where passenger spaceflights are soon to become a reality. Still. the division between man and the technology we create is ever-apparent—will these demarcations start to blur in our lifetime.

Sahin completed his PhD at Harvard in cognitive neuroscience and was awarded the Richard J. Hermstein prize for the years best PhD dissertation. He also has a Masters degree from MIT.

Currently Sahin is focusing his efforts on Brain Power LLC, a company developing technologies that incorporate Google Glass to help treat autism. The Harvard graduate is using his expertise and his company to research and develop consumer wearables to aid in tracking and treating key features of
neurodevelopmental disorders, and ‘gamified’ therapy apps to treat autism.

His company is currently developing a Glass app that helps autistic children recognize subtle changes in emotions via facial cues, and rewards them in-app for holding eye contact with subjects through the device’s display.

During his talk Sahin emphasized the role technology and the “intemet of things‘ will play in the coming years, especially in terms of augmenting normal human cognitive abilities.

The next scheduled Executive Talk is on December 5, titled “Women and We Men” at the FPLA auditorium in Antipolo, Rizal

FPLA is the country’s first dedicated corporate university, aimed at enhancing the leadership skills and strategic thinking of future leaders.
