What's in store for you in the Year of the Monkey?

January is the time to start anew. To let go of last year's bad vibes and negative energy, one must surround themselves with positive people, the ones that who would support and help you become your best.  Get rid ourselves with the drama queens and turn the negative stress into positive action. Once the new year strikes, Id always wear the lucky color of the incoming year and stuffed my pocket with money, to usher in prosperity, wealth and luck, and there should be food in the table consists of round fruits, spaghetti, pasta, pancit for longevity, and desserts like leche flan, ube, rolls, sticky rice for the partner that you would spend your forever with.

Last January 3, 2016, Feng Shui Empress Marites Allen held her annual convention at the Marco Polo Hotel to share the auspicious dates and charms that could help ward off the bad and negative vibes and further improve ones’ fortune.

The convention marks the 11th year since it was first held in 2005. Each participant received a convention brochure containing the overall forecasts and valuable suggestions on how to make the new lunar new year more auspicious.

The event also took on a different path from past conventions where forecasts for each Chinese zodiac sign were presented. This time, Allen provided participant with personal destiny readings based on their birth details. Thus, prospective attendees are advised to register early and provide information on their date and hour of birth, to facilitate the preparation of the personalized charts.

“Although each zodiac animal sign provides certain luck indications for the year, I wish to stress that no two individuals, even with same date of birth, may share the same destiny,” shared Allen. “The reason is that the year, date and the hour of birth have very specific influences on someone’s life as days and hours are governed by different feng shui elements.”

Since my birthdate falls on the Year of the Horse, let me share what's in store for me and to those who are born on the same year for the Year of the Monkey 2016.

Horse: Birth years: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014
Forecast: Your natural confidence will get a boost filling everything you get involved in to be infused with positivity. Heaven Luck will act like an invisible hand that will guide you to make the right decisions. Even if you meet obstacles along the way, do not fight the natural order of things.

It is best for partners to extend as much understanding and support to one another as very little issues can create big fights. This is one of those periods when you have to be cautious with your resources as your wealth luck is quite poor. This is not a good time for you to make major investments or business deals.
Amazingly beautiful career opportunities can take you to different overseas conventions and conferences. The more you travel, the more you forget about the other woes plaguing your this time.

BEST MONTHS: February, July, August, September, November
Bad Months: March, May, June, October.

Incidentally, 2004 was also an election year…just like 2016. So we could expect a lot of changes and some surprises happening.

Allen said the year 2016 will be a year when most people will actively pursue power, wealth or financial security, expect heated arguments and misunderstandings but people will be willing to compromise. There wil be a lot of Challenges for those in leadership positions. The economy looks promising during the 3rd and 4th quarter but business will be extremely competitive. Matriarch/ Female leaders will reign supreme while male leaders may become short fused and argumentative.

In terms of relationship, optimism and happiness will prevail despite the fiery atmosphere and people will be open minded caring and candid. Husbands/ men will be very confrontational and hard to please so better have lots of patience. Marriage luck is strong for Rooster born people and an auspicious year to start a new family or have a baby.

For career, the women can expect more favorable promotion over men, and men will have to adhere to women in terms of decision making and implementation of new projects.

Health luck is not stable this year as the illness star is at the center of the chart.

The Fire Monkey – 1956, 2016
The Fire Monkey is the most active and aggressive of the Monkeys. Naturally dominant, he automatically gravitates towards leadership roles and is competitive in whatever he is doing. He will need to be careful not to let this overwhelm him and turn into toxic jealousy.

He also constantly strives to be in control of whatever situation he is in, which can become overbearing. The main drive for whatever he embarks on is to head straight for the top and stay there. However, when he is in charge of a situation, his people skills kick in and he does nurture those under his charge who need it.

With his Fire energy, this agile, impulsive Monkey often leaps where angels fear to tread. This reckless behaviour sometimes turns out to not be to the Fire Monkey’s advantage. However, he is very creative, dynamic and has a particularly good talent at drawing people to him – this often helps him get out of scrapes. He’ll leap from tree to tree – whichever has the most fruit at the time – then find the quickest, cleverest escape before others get to him.

In general though, the Fire Monkey is flamboyant and charmingly friendly, and has a large social circle.

Life Lessons:

The Fire Monkey’s aggression needs to be channeled correctly to correct and positive directions, or he risks become very destructive and harmful. If the Fire Monkey could develop more patience, it would be good for him and those who work with him The Fire Monkey also needs to think through his ideas before acting on them in order to safeguard his own interests.

Monkey Birth years: 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016
Fabulous luck indications include the support of the Tai Sui or the god of the year. Prosperity star also brings potential wealth and abundance in everything you do. Thre could also be a spiritual awakening of some kind. And there will be sigs that ONE BIG DEAL will come your way. Be alert to spot this opportunity and don’t let it pass you by.

You will be too busy making money or growing your business to be thinking about love or marriage, but if you don’t make time for your partner or family it can lead to arguments. Make time and keep your cool.

You have the support of the Tai Sui and you will be reaping so many good fortunes as long as you do not offend him.

As for health, beware of risks of accidents or minor injuries due to your harsh or fast judgments on the road.

BEST MONTHS: February, April, September, October, November
Bad Months: March, May, June, October, December

Dragon: Birth years: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012
Forecast: Its going to be an unbelievable year with so many positive indications! The victory Star in your chart brings success in most competitive situations. Not only that you have three more auspicious stars that indicate good fortune in the form of life-changing events. There are also small victories on your way to enjoying bigger blessings. This year promises to be not just a successful one for the Dragon but a very fulfilling one as well.

Avoid speculative luck as casinos or lotteries however as your chances of winning at this time are low. Utilize your powerful negotiating skills to convince potential investors to give in to your terms.

When it comes to relationships, couples must be wary of rumors, while singles may face opposition from their families.

Best Months: February, March, April, June, November, December
Bad Months: May, July, September, October

Snake; Birth years: 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013
Forecast: Stay close to your astrological allies—The Monkey, Dragon and Rooster as they will have positive indications for you. Your life force and spirit essence are both strong plus you get a visti from the Victory Star.
Wedding bells are ringing for those who have been together for long. Starting a family would be a fantastic match to your growing wealth. To singles this is an opportune time for you to find THE ONE.

As your chart has the risk of the robbery star, ensure that your surroundings are safe to avoid risks, including bodily injury . If you are a business owner it will be a great time for your business.

Best months: February, March, April, June, November, December
Bad Month: May, July, September, October.

Relive the best love songs from the Love Playlist of Carpenters and Platters

THIS VALENTINE’S MONTH RELIVE the some of the best love songs of the all time as Royal Chimes Concert brings The Love Playlist of Carpenters and Platters at the Midas Tent (Midas Hotel &Casino) on February 14 and at KIA Theatre, Araneta Center on February 15, 8 P.M.

The Love Playlist of Carpenters and Platters features Laurie Briggs as Karen Carpenter with the world-renowned The Fabulous Sounds of The Platters, headed by Donne Ray Radford, a fourth generation member of The Platters.

The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. Producing a distinctively soft musical style, they became among the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 100 million records sold.

Laurie has been touring the world for over a decade now as Karen Carpenter and as part of the tribute act called The Karpenters. Her fascination with Karen’s voice and music started when she was eight years old. “It [Karen’s music] moved me and I started to emulate the sound I heard,” she says.

Laurie’s show incorporates all the wonderful hits of the Carpenters as it takes you on a nostalgic journey through the life and times of the Carpenters, performing all the hits including “Close to You”, “Masquerade”, “Top of the World”, “Sing”, “Rainy Days and Mondays”, “Superstar” and “Please Mr. Postman” to name but a few. The unmistakable sound and costumes which includes authentic Californian dresses from the 1970’s, make this the most authentic and accurate Carpenter’s experience the world has ever seen.

Before the Carpenters, there was The Platters in the 50s and 60s. They were one of the most successful vocal groups of the early rock and roll era. Their distinctive sound was a bridge between the pre-rock Tin Pan Alley tradition and the burgeoning new genre. The Platters were one of the first African American groups to be accepted as a major chart group and were one of the most successful vocal groups in the world.

The Fabulous Sounds of The Platters with Donne Ray Radford continues the legacy of the first and succeeding generations of The Platters. Over the years and countless shows across the world, The Fabulous Sounds of The Platters has wowed their audience by staying faithful to the distinctiveness of the music and style of the iconic vocal group. carpernters and platters
When you watch The Fabulous Sounds of The Platters, get ready to be enthralled all over again by classics such as “Only You”, “The Great Pretender”, “Twilight Time”, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “Harbor Lights”, and more hits of The Platters hits.

This is the second time that the group will be in Manila. Their Valentine show last year was a success and they’ve been recieving so many requests to come back to do more shows here in the Philippines. Some even said that their front man, Donne Ray, is even better than the other vocalists of The Platters.

Expect a double treat when you watch The Love Playlist of Carpenters and Platters featuring Laurie Briggs and The Fabulous Sounds of The Platters. It’s definitely a different kind of concert experience having two world-class acts in one stage. For the so-called ‘millenials’, give this a shot. You’’d probably understand how music played a big role in the love story of your mom and dad and grandparents.

Tickets for the February 15 show is only available at Ticketnet (911-5555). For the show at Midas Tent on February 14, tickets are available at SM Tickets (472-2222), Ticketworld (891-9999 and Ticketnet (911-5555).

Alvin and Theodore strut their way to “Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: The Road Chip"

Strutting and dancing their way into their latest movie instalment, Alvin, Theodore and Simon star in the latest addition to the hit franchise “Alvin and the Chipmunks” in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” with the returning voice cast of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Jesse McCartney.

In “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,” the Chipmunks hit the road and embark on a journey to stop their guardian Dave (Jason Lee) from what they believe to be a wedding proposal in Miami.  Alvin, who’s charming and musical with boundless enthusiasm and animal magnetism; Simon, whose I.Q. is just north of Einstein’s; and Theodore, who’s shy, good-natured, loving and sensitive along with new equally mischievous pal, Miles (Josh Green) son of Dave’s special friend, Samantha (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) are not thrilled on the idea of Dave and Sam tying the knot. ‘

In a pact that recalls the expression, ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend,’ the Chipmunks and Miles reluctantly join forces to travel cross-country, to Florida, and try and break up what they believe will be Dave’s marriage proposal to Sam.

It’s a journey filled with adventure, laughs, music and lots of local color.   But director Walt Becker also notes that it’s also about Alvin, Simon, Theodore and Miles finding their way into a kind of blended family.  He further points to the film’s new blended family elements as an entryway to this new chapter in the Chipmunks’ lives.  It’s no longer just the three boys and Dave Seville.  Two new characters – a love interest for Dave, and her teenage son – enter the scene, and turn the ‘Munks’ life and family topsy-turvy.

“I think the idea of a blended family is one that many people can relate to,” says Becker. “The Chipmunks are always trying to do the right thing, but end up doing it in the wrong way.  You can mine a lot of comedy from those family experiences.”

There’s also a lot of humor mined from the guys’ cross-country odyssey.  It begins when Miles smuggles the ‘Munks aboard a flight, where everything goes wrong.  In flight, they meet a new foe – a TSA Agent named Suggs, played by recent Emmy® winner Tony Hale (“Veep”).

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” shakes things up, musically.  Each stop on the ‘Munks’ and Miles’ quest has its own special character and different musical influence – from modern, hip-hop/country vibe of an Austin, Texas bar to the great jazz, blues and funk of New Orleans, and finally to the Latin flair of Miami.

Continuing a soundtrack tradition for the series, Alvin and the Chipmunks put their own delightful new spin on smashes including “Uptown Funk,” “Turn Down For What,” and more. In addition, Redfoo and the boys trade verses on “Juicy Wiggle (Munk Remix).” The soundtrack also features Sheppard’s platinum-certified international hit “Geronimo” and The Score’s “Oh My Love.”   Mark Mothersbaugh is the composer and the executive music producer is Alana Da Fonseca.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: The Road Chip” opens January 20 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

The Happy Hearts Fund partners with Philam Foundation to rebuild a school

Two years after Typhoon Yolanda ravaged Leyte, local and international humanitarian organizations are still participating in ongoing rehabilitation efforts. Some organizations, though, focused on arguably the most important aspect of the development of the children who survived the wrath of the typhoon—their education.

The Happy Hearts Fund, a non-profit organization founded by philanthropist and international supermodel Petra Nemcova, partnered with the Philam Foundation and The Travel Corporation to rebuild a school within the Alangalang district in typhoon-hit Tacloban. The Happy Hearts Fund, dedicated to rebuilding schools after natural disasters, moved quickly in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan to commence rebuilding efforts in affected areas.

From left to right: Max G. Ventura, President of the Philam Foundation; Petra Nemcova, founder of the Happy Hearts Fund; Robin Yap, President of The Travel Corporation (Asia); Gerry B. Raynes, Principal/Director of Alangalang Elementary School; and Loreto T. Yu, Municipal Mayor of Alangalang, Leyte.

In partnership with Happy Hearts Fund and Philam Foundation, The Travel Corporation (TTC) generously contributed US$40,000 towards the rebuilding of the Alangalang School. The Philam Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Philam Group of Companies (PGC), launched Philam Paaralan with the Department of Education. The program aims to rebuild schools affected by natural disasters, and to make them more resilient against future disasters.

‘We are very pleased to have been able to help Petra and the Happy Hearts Fund in completing the important restoration of the Alangalang School. Robin Yap, the President of The Travel Corporation (Asia) in attending this opening, proudly represented TTC's brands Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, Contiki and Uniworld in commemorating this important event and in doing so reiterating our company's commitment to giving back to local communities around the world, especially in a much loved country such as the Philippines. We are honoured to assist Petra, her team and their remarkable mission to rebuild schools wherever possible. God bless them all and may the children enjoy learning and sharing at this important educational institution in the many years to come.” said Brett Tollman, Chief Executive of TTC.
“We work tirelessly to bring brighter futures to children affected by natural disasters, and this school opening positively demonstrates that, with strong collaborations, we can provide safe, resilient schools, restore a sense of normalcy to those affected by natural disasters, and create sustained response after first responders leave,” Nemcova said. “Attending a school opening is such a meaningful and unforgettable experience for everyone, from the students to parents to teachers, the whole community and of course, all of the partners involved. The ripple effect that this school provides is what keeps us pushing forward in our mission to rebuild, safe resilient schools for children who are forgotten for years after natural disasters because of a lack of sustained response. We are so excited for the Alangalang school opening as it marks a new beginning and better future for children, their families and the whole community,” she added.

Max Ventura, President of the Philam Foundation, expressed his deepest gratitude to the groups and individuals who helped make the rebuilding of the school possible. “We are very grateful to Petra and her team from Happy Hearts as well as to their corporate partners like The Travel Corporation for their generosity and trust in our Philam Paaralan Program,” he said. “We honour them by building these disaster-resilient and conducive learning spaces that will benefit hundreds of school children for years to come. Together with our partners, we are able to build back better and offer hope to communities gravely affected by calamities. The schools that we build do serve as beacons of hope for many,” he concluded.

Leonardi DiCaprio stars in the highly-thrilling cinematic "The Revenant"

Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Glass became a revenant, someone believed to be dead who has returned to life after going through a harrowing series of events fighting for his life when left to survive in the wild set during the 19th century American Frontier.

Surviving the wild by pure instinct prior the advent of emergency call buttons such as 911 and high-tech gadgets is what makes the latest Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio film, “The Revenant” this year’s highly-thrilling cinematic experience – directed, produced and co-written by Academy Award winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

Inspired by true events from the sparse accounts of the legendary fur trapper and trader.

Immersing audiences in the unparalleled beauty, mystery and dangers of life in 1823 America, the film explores one man’s transformation in a quest for survival. “The Revenant” explores primal drives not only for life itself but for dignity, justice, faith, family and home.  The film’s wilderness-based production mirrored the harsh conditions Glass and company actually lived through in the 1800s. Iñárritu and his whole cast and crew were up for all that was thrown at them, welcoming the challenges of shooting in Canada and Argentina, regions known for unpredictable weather and untouched wilds, in order to fully understand the experience of fur trappers in the early 19th century.

Glass’s mythology began in 1823, when he was among thousands joining the fur trade, a driving new force in the US economy. It was a time when many saw the wild as a spiritual void that demanded to be tamed and conquered by the steeliest of men. And so they poured into the unknown, plying unmapped rivers, disappearing into impossibly lush forests, seeking not only excitement and adventure but also profits -- often in fierce competition with the Native tribes for whom these lands had long been home.

Many such men died anonymously, but Glass entered the annals of American folklore by flat-out refusing to die. His legend sparked after he faced one of the West’s most feared dangers:  a startled grizzly bear.  For even the most tested frontiersmen that should have been the end.  But not for Glass, in Iñárritu’s telling of the tale, a mauled Glass clings to life – then suffers a human betrayal that fuels him to continue at any cost. In spite of tremendous loss, Glass pulls himself from an early grave – clawing his way through a gauntlet of unknown perils and unfamiliar cultures on a journey that becomes not just a search for reckoning but for redemption. As Glass moves through the frontier in turmoil, he comes to reject the urge for destruction that once drove him.   He has become a “revenant” -- one returned from the dead.

One of the movie’s most thrilling scene, the bear attack that threatens to end Glass’s life, immediately took DiCaprio into a mano-a-mano struggle with one of nature’s most skilled predators. “The bear attack was incredibly difficult and arduous,” DiCaprio recalls, “but it’s profoundly moving. In the film, Alejandro puts you there almost like a fly buzzing around this attack, so that you feel the breath of Glass and the breath of the bear. What he achieved is beyond anything I’ve seen.  Glass has to find a way to deal with this full-grown animal on top of him.  He’s at the brink of death – and you are fully immersed in this moment with him.”

“The Revenant is a story of harsh survival but also one of inspirational hope,” Iñárritu says.  “For me, the important part was to convey this adventure with a sense of wonder and discovery, as an exploration of both nature and human nature.”

“The Revenant” opens in cinemas February 3 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Get the latest hair trends at Orange Blush Salon

The best way to start the year is with a new look, buy yourself a red matte lippie, draw the cat eye and sport a new  hair style or be adventurous enough to color your tresses. Whether your black, brown or red you can always richen the color by experimenting on the hues. Since, violet, blue, pink or even gray and bright rainbow ends is the color trend last year, why not try red or ronze this time.

I have been itching to get a new hair color since middle of last year. I am choosing between an ombre with a hint of red and pink, oh yes I have never been this adventurous with hair color. I have decided on red. So I have it prepped for a brown primer last August and most probably you have seen me sporting the dark brown-orange tress last year.

Before coloring, Im sporting a dark brown orange mane

I have been looking to richen the color by adding an allover red to it. Then a little highlights to soften up the ends.

That was when I got it colored last December 23 at Orange Blush Salon SM Megacenter Cabanatuan. My stylist (Ashley) put a hairspa treatment prior to coloring to prevent dryness to make it look and feel soft and shiny. The whole coloring plus treatment lasted 1 1/2 hour with hairspa and powerdose. The whole coloring process stung a bit, I got it washed out after 45 minutes, and was treated to Loreal Powerdose Lipidum to condition my chemically treated hair. Orange Blush Salon uses Loreal for their hair products.

I still got my desired red with a touch of  brown which is a ronze.   Ronze is a mixture of copper red and bronze brown. It works well with my complexion though and freshens my overall look.

With my new Ronze color

If you have the same color as I do, maintain your color by staying out of the sun, wear a hat to protect your mane and buy a color conserving treatment to keep it away from turning to brassy orange and visit your salon every 6 to 8 weeks for maintenance.

If youre ready for a color change and is a Cabanatuan resident near SM Megacenter Cabanatuan. Book an appointment and get your hair colored by a professional. The world of hair color is a tricky business so better not try it at home by yourself.  Look for my stylist (Ashley) at Orange Blush Salon for that celeb-inspired style!

Clients can also avail of the salon’s other popular services such as the hair re-bonding, hair coloring and foot spa services.

At Orange Blush salon, they focus mostly on hair services, which they consider to be their main area of expertise. They are sought out for their haircutting, hair treatments, hair rebonding, hair straightening, hair coloring, and also their manicure and pedicure, foot spa and makeup. “We have decided to concentrate in the hair services, less the facials and massage treatments that other salons usually offer along with the hair treatments,” says Orange Blush salon owner Joby Linsangan-Moreno.

To know more about Orange Blush and its services, visit them at the Sotto Building, Del Pilar Street, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija or call (044) 464.4114. You can also check out their website at http://orangeblushsalon.com/index.html or look them up on Facebook.
