What was the first book that you have read?

Who inspired you to read and what's the first book that caught your fancy. I started reading when I was 6 years old. My father thought me how to read and memorize all the characters in the book by randomly questioning me how I felt about the characters and story. As far as I remember, my father accompanied me to this little bookstore near our apartment, and he let me choose books.

The first book that my father bought was Rapunzel. Then came, Snow White, Cinderella, The Magic Porridge Pot, The Ginger Bread Man, Alice in Wonderland and so forth.

When in high school, I got addicted to Sweet Dreams Series and Sweet Valley High. I got around 100 books bought during that time.  As I grow older, I have been buying detective and suspense thriller books, then transitioned to Chic Lit Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella for light reads.

Now that I am older, before buying any bestseller, I googled the Top 10 from the Barnes and Noble first. Or check out Book Barista's instagram to get to know what she is reading or recommending. That's where I discovered Gone Girl,  Sharp Objects, The Girl on the Train, Into the Water and now The Girl Before by JP Delaney and The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn.

When I am down and out and about to fall into the pit of depression. Only a book would help me light up. I find comfort when I am reading. It help me see things in a positive way. It makes me weigh things over. It calms. It makes me feel alive.

Its that time of the year again when  Manila International Book Fair (MIBF)
the country’s most anticipated event of its kind, open its doors again to the public. The 39th installation of the Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) opens Sept 12, 10AM at the Hall 3 of the SMX Convention Center, MOA.

Please let me know what you buy and let's discuss about it here.  I want to know hihi maybe we can exchange books. Im just as excited as you are.

James Reid joins Jollibee’s pioneering digital series, 14/29 Petsa de Peligro JolliSerye gang

If you have been following and watching Petsa de Peligro JolliSerye, a new actor has joined the gang and is sure to win everyone's hearts.

After adding award-winning actresses Eugene Domingo and Cherie Gil to its cast, Jollibee’s pioneering digital series, 14/29 Petsa de Peligro JolliSerye—now on its second season—brings in another certified star to the mix with actor and singer James Reid.

James has always been a part of the ever-growing Jollibee family and was an endorser of the Filipino fast-food brand’s best-selling Burger Steak and Yumburger. This time around, he joins the JolliSerye gang as Hans Samonte, a handsome copy machine attendant at Happy Calendar House in the newest episode that was released on September 14, 2018.

It’s been such a fun and rewarding experience to be part of the JolliSerye crew,” Reid shared. “Working with Jollibee is always a great experience but shooting for an episode of JolliSerye is a totally new but equally enjoyable experience for me.”

In this latest episode, the JolliSerye team—composed of millennials working for the publishing company, Happy Calendar House headed by CEO U.G.E. played by Eugene Domingo—is challenged to find the next calendar boys who will join UGE in the 2019 edition of the company’s calendar.

Happy Calendar House’ South Branch announces their plan to dominate the model search with their handsome Brazilian messengers. Having no budget due to Petsa De Peligro, the JolliSerye gang scrambles to find another good-looking employee to pair up with their resident Mr. Pogi ng Marketing James (played by Aldrin Angeles)—and discovers that their new photocopy boy, Hans, perfectly fits the requirement.

While initially hesitant to join the contest, Hans is eventually persuaded by the team to help out in the spirit of camaraderie and the promise of a delicious yet budget-friendly JolliSavers lunch.

Cue in makeovers, beauty shots, witty reality show references, and crave-inducing JolliSavers meals, and soon it’s time for a runway show and pose-off between the contenders from the Main and South Branches.

“Shooting this episode has been fun especially since it’s more comedy than what I usually do. The whole cast and crew have been very supportive all throughout, and it’s been an honor and an unforgettable experience to work with a comedy legend like Ms. Eugene,” Reid said.

“The 14/29 Petsa De Peligro JolliSerye has been so well-received by Filipino netizens that we really wanted to step up the comedy and charm of our episodes in our second season,” said Cathleen Capati, Jollibee AVP and Group Category Head for Flagships. “We’ve had Cherie Gil and Eugene Domingo on board, and now we have James Reid in a role never seen before by his fans and followers. We truly want to bring entertaining digital content to Pinoy netizens through heartwarming, funny, and relatable stories as seen in our first-ever digital series.”

I hope that netizens enjoy this JolliSerye episode and remember that you can still have fun and enjoy delicious food during Petsa De Peligro with Jollibee’s JolliSavers.” Reid said.

With JolliSavers, sharing the delightful sarap ng payday every day with your whole team is possible—even if it’s petsa de peligro! Smart Communications Inc., the country’s leading wireless services provider, has increased Smart Wifi rollouts in over 100 school areas nationwide—
providing students across the country the benefits of the internet as a learning and communications tool.

As a member of the World Broadband Alliance (WBA), Smart Communications Inc. has endeavored to give a greater majority access to seamless connectivity through the service.

“As we continue to lead the country’s transformation into a smart nation, we at PLDT believe in equipping the youth with the means to enrich their knowledge and help them excel in any field they choose to pursue,” adds SVP and Head of PLDT & Smart Enterprise Business Groups Jovy Hernandez.

Other universities outside of the metro include Ateneo de Naga, University of Cebu, University of Mindanao, University of Bohol, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Letran Calamba, among others.

With this program, students will be given access to Smart Wifi’s reliable internet

Students will be better connected through their e-mail and social media accounts and will enjoy easier downloading and uploading of files, with Smart Wifi’s broadband capacity of up to 100 megabits per second. In addition, the availability of Smart Wifi in universities opens up opportunities for  for brands to reach the younger market, particularly students,  through Smart Wifi Ads, a  targeted marketing solution that enables businesses to directly reach and engage their customers. McJim’s “Pitaka” (The Wallet), “Sinturon” (Belt), and “Bag” have been selected to compete in a total of 22 prestigious film festivals

True to its enduring values of quality, style, and elegance, trusted leather goods brand McJim Classic Leather is unstoppable as it continues to gain international recognition for its troika of masterfully produced short films under its “Get Reel” online campaign, just over a year after its debut video, “Pitaka,” made waves in the internet.

Director and PR entrepreneur Chris Cahilig attributes the success of McJim’s short films to the brand’s adherence to its timeless philosophy of quality, style, and elegance.

McJim’s “Pitaka” (The Wallet), “Sinturon” (Belt), and “Bag” have been selected to complete in a total of 22 prestigious film festivals—as of this writing—in the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Australia, Mexico, and Venezuela, a record-breaking feat for a commercial brand.

“Pitaka,” the first of the three short films, was recently chosen as finalist in the 2018 Wales International Film Festival and received nomination for an award on October 4.

Chris Cahilig, the director and executive producer of the three short films, said that the successive recognitions that the McJim viral videos has been getting abroad is proof that even branded shorts can be at par with the quality of commercially produced films.

“With its advocacy of delivering superior quality to its consumers, McJim is able to prove that it can produce not only world-class leather goods but also world-class films that are able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the international market. This is because the brand has always faithfully adhered to its timeless philosophy of style, quality, and elegance,” says Cahilig.

“McJim remains committed to bring out the best of the Filipino before the world. The numerous recognitions that its short films are getting are proof that the brand has been successful in carrying out this goal,” he notes.

Karl Medina and Art Artienda breathe life into “Pitaka’s” strong and relatable narrative, which extols Filipino family values of sacrifice and perseverance

Apart from the Wales International Film Fest, “Pitaka” was earlier selected to participate in international film festivals in Italy and the US, namely San Mauro Torinese International Film Festival 2018; Cefalu Film Festival in Palermo; Diwa Filipino Film Showcase of Seattle 2018; Culture of Life Film Festival 2018 in Memphis City; 2019 Dramatic Shorts Film Festival in Denver; and Los Angeles CineFest 2019.

“Pitaka” depicts fraternal love and the Filipino elders’ sense of responsibility as exemplified by Kuya, portrayed in the film by Karl Medina, who sets aside his personal dreams to provide for his younger brother, a character played by 1:43’s Art Artienda.

Following in the wake of “Pitaka” is the quirkier and more daring “Sinturon” (The Belt), which tackles marital fidelity and features Mercedes Cabral and Kiko Matos. “Sinturon” made it to three international film fests, namely Nebrody Film Fest and Corti A Sud-Polla In Corto in Italy, and Love Shorts Film Festival 2019 in the US.

“Bag” starring Ross Pesigan and Wayne Avellano earns praises for its honest and straightforward portrayal of gay-straight friendships.

The LGBT-themed “Bag,” the last of the three short films, snagged 12 official selections for McJim in international film festivals for its honest portrayal of a gay-straight friendship. It follows the story of an openly gay young professional Paolo (Ross Pesigan), who, after a series of bad breakups, finds comfort and refuge in his straight best friend Carlo (Wayne Avellano).

“McJim may be a male brand, but it shows its modern and mature view of gender issues through a gay-themed and stereotype-breaking content like ‘Bag.’ What makes McJim’s short films a cut above the rest is how it tackles values and attitudes that build our society as a better and more progressive one,” says Cahilig.

The bold move has definitely paid off as “Bag” is poised to join the following film fests: the First International LGBTQ Coming of Age Short Films Festival, which will be held simultaneously in Paris, France, and San Francisco in September this year; the Los Angeles CineFest 2019; the 2018 LGBTQ Shorts Film Festival; the International Shorts Film Festival (Australia) 2018; Outflix Film Festival 2018 in Memphis; QUEER-Streifen Regensburg 2018 in Germany; Shorts Mexico 2018, the largest international shorts film fest in Latin America;

Five Continents International Film Festival 2018 in Venezuela; OutReels Cincinnati 2018; London International Motion Pictures Awards 2019, Queerbee LGBT Film Festival 2018 in London; and 2019 Dramatic Shorts Film Festival in Denver.

Behind Pitaka’s visually poetic direction of photography is Cesca Lee, known for the films T.P.O., Purgatoryo, and Otso. “Sinturon” and “Bag,” meanwhile, were shot by the equally talented cinematographer Patrick Ferrer. Archie del Mundo wrote the screenplay and was also line producer for the three short films.

For generations now, McJim Classic Leather has been the leading and trusted brand for classic leather goods and accessories of superior quality and design.

"The Hopeful Romantic" review

The movie The Hopeful Romantic reminds me of Regal Films comedy movies in the 90s, with the likes of  Rene Requiestas, Andrew E and a few.  Just because the lead man Pepe Herrera has a slight resemblance to deceased comedian Rene Requiestas and they have the same style of comedy and timing.

The Hopeful Romantic movie is a story of Jess who at his age is still a virgin and is looking for the love of his life. Then he met Veronica, played by Ritz Azul,  at the Hotel Bar where he is an employee. That was when the riot begins.

In the Hopeful Romantic, Pepe plays Jess, a 33 year old Valet Parking Attendant at The Manila Hotel, an honest man and most of all, a virgin. He promised himself that he will only give himself when he already found his true love.

Veronica, (played by Ritz), is a kept woman in the high society world. A victim of circumstances, but still a survivor.

However, there is one problem; Veronica has no idea that he is not rich. Afraid that revealing himself will make him lose Veronica, Jess starts to pretend the part. He kept on doing this until his resources spill away. The inevitable happens, and Veronica learns the truth about Jess.

But one thing that The Hopeful Romantic has going for it is that its movie trailer already went  viral gathering 9.6 million views on Facebook in less than three weeks since it was launched.

If anything, the virality of the trailer to organic Facebook users indicates a positive reception from netizens. As of today, the trailer has now reached 108,000 shares, 14,000 positive comments on Good Time Fan Page.

Ritz, who gets to be launched in this film as a leading lady, beams with pride about this project.

Sobrang proud ako sa pelikulang ito kasi lahat pinaghirapan namin: ng direktor, producers, writers, at syempre co-actors ko na pinagpuyatan.

Firstly, Ritz, who is more comfortable with drama, ventures into comedy in The Hopeful Romantic.

Secondly, she had to lose weight to effectively portray her role as a sexy gold digger.
“Ang mahirap lang for me, physically, dapat medyo mukhang sexy don sa screen, so nag-struggle din ako to lose weight, kasi sobrang lumaki ako for a while before gawin yung movie.

“And then nahirapan ako kasi sobrang kabaligtaran ko ang role sa totoong buhay. Naging kumportable ako sa mga katrabaho ko, kaya napa-swimsuit ako.”

Meantime, Pepe, who is a very talented singer-actor, finally gets to be a lead star in this film.

The versatile actor takes pride in saying that he gets to explore comedy genre through a sexy movie.

Pepe admits that he felt pressured that he would finally be a leading man in this project.
Fortunately, Ritz made his job easier for him.

“Ang masasabi ko po ay lalaki din ako at nakakaramdam ng karupukam. Si Ritz ay very desirable 110%.”

“Kasi kinabahan ako nung una dahil sinasabihan ako, ‘Leading man ka na, kailangan tutukan mo yung panunuyo o kung paano tratuhin ang leading ladies.’ Parang siya [Ritz] pa yung gumagawa non para sa kin. Cowboy si Ritz. Hindi siya tipikal na leading lady.

The Hopeful Romantic opens September 12, 2018 and is directed by Topel Lee.
