Olympian Greg Louganis Ready to Officiate 2019 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

Four-time Olympic Gold Medal diver, Greg Louganis, will continue to serve as Sports Director for this year’s upcoming Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series - Season 11. The World Series will kick-off on April 12th in the Small and Big Lagoons located in Miniloc Island, El Nido, Palawan. This year will mark the first time the event comes to the Philippines and will likewise be the only Asian stop of the 2019 series.

Louganis’ Work with Red Bull Cliff Diving

In 2017, Louganis was named as the Sports Director for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series after having attended the event in the past as a judge.

“I was invited as a judge on the tour years ago,” shares Louganis. “Then after the passing of my dear friend and former Olympic competitor Niki Stajkovic, who was the original Sports Director, Red Bull reached out to me and asked if I could step into the role.”

Moreover, Louganis is excited to be working on the 11th season, stating “I am honoured to be back this year on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. I look forward to another exciting year.”

As Red Bull Cliff Diving’s Sports Director, Louganis oversees every athletic and logical aspect of the competition. This ensures that all safety measures are met, in addition to the implementation of consistent competition rules across all the competitors.

“Some of the safety measures we look for is if the diving heights meet the standard requirements for 27 meters for the Men and 21 meters for the Women,” says Louganis. “Also that there is at least 5 meters water depth which the divers would be diving in.”

A Quick Look at Greg Louganis’ Unforgettable Career
Louganis, who is widely considered the “the greatest American diver”, made his Olympic debut in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he took home the Silver Medal in the platform event.

After having won three combined FINA World Championships in 1979 and 1982, Louganis returned to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles where he placed first on both the platform and springboard events. Four years later, at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Louganis suffered a concussion in the preliminary rounds. An undeterred Louganis continued and outplaced his competition by winning both Gold Medals in the springboard and platform contests.

In the years since his Olympic wins, Louganis has established himself as a global icon for civil and LGBT rights.

6 Things to Kickstart the Independent Life

#Adulting may be intimidating, especially for young adults. After spending so much time in the comfort of being at home with mom and dad around, it may seem daunting to be separated from them and actually having to start living alone.

The fresh grads and young adults in our lives need all the guidance and support that they can get. One of thoughtful things that parents can do for them is to gift them with essential items that they can utilize well.

Here are six items that every yuppie needs when they start an independent life:

1. Gift certificates. A set of gift certificates is a good idea for anyone who’s starting their career and is looking to expand their wardrobe to include office-appropriate clothes. This is a better idea than just gifting clothes so one can pick the style, color, and size he or she wants.

2. An investment account. Adulthood means investing in the future. Trusted companies grow their customers’ assets while offering other benefits like health and life insurance.
Investments can be tricky, so why not help them open an investment account and make the initial deposit for them? They can then build on it as soon as he or she starts having a regular salary.

3. Storage containers and organizers. Having one’s own place to live in means taking on bigger responsibilities like cleaning the entire home. Investing on storage containers and organizers will help one keep his or her things in order at all times. It will also help save time from having to look around the home for that thing that is needed.

4. A good air conditioner. Those moving out and getting their own place will need an air conditioner to survive the Philippine heat and humidity. A good choice is the Samsung Wind-Free Air Conditioner, which maintains the preferred temperature by gently dispersing cool air without direct wind.

5. A multi-tasking oven. Another must have for the future condo-dweller is a smart oven that will make cooking more convenient. The Samsung Smart Oven’s 15 cook with ease presets makes kitchen-time easier for those on-the-go. It also works as a grill, steamer, fryer, oven, microwave, and yogurt maker so one doesn’t have to eat the same thing over and over. Despite its compact size, the Smart Oven is a multi-tasking appliance that maximizes the space in one’s condo or apartment.

6. A reliable washer-dryer. Bringing a load of dirty clothes to the laundromat can be a tedious chore that might lead to lost or damaged clothes. Make their lives easier and ensure that they look presentable with clean clothes by gifting them with a Samsung Combo Washer & Dryer.

Anyone can slay #adulting when equipped with the proper resources. Samsung Digital Appliances are the ultimate partner in life for those about to embark on a new adventure since they are built to solve real-life challenges and deliver meaningful innovations.

Bayambang Pangasinan Patron St.Vincent Ferrer to Enter in "Guiness Book of World Records"

Manaoag, Dagupan, Alaminos, Lingayen, these are probably the first four towns that come to mind when you mention the province of Pangasinan.

Manaoag for its famous church and the miraculous blessed Virgin Mary "Our Lady of Manaoag," Hundred Islands in Alaminos, the Bangus of Dagupan and of course the rich history of Lingayen.

But what about Bayambang?

Bayambang might just be the next big tourist destination in Pangasinan especially for Catholic devotees this Lenten Season.

The quiet town of Bayambang first made noise after setting a new Guinness Book of World Record for the longest grill measuring 8.16 kilometers beating Turkey' old record of 6.1 kilometers and now the leaders of the municipality is out to make history once again for creating the tallest bamboo (supported) statue in the world.

In honor of its  patron saint St Vincent Ferrer, the Bayambanguenos  created  a 51-meter monument right in the heart of Bayambang as tribute to his 600th death anniversary and in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Bayambang  parish church.

Last week, we drove all the way to Bayambang  to meet with government officials as they talked about how the construction of the statue, and the devotion of the Bambanguenos to St. Vincent Ferrer, and how they are also preparing for the town fiesta this April.

The municipal government of Bayambang, Pangasinan, led by Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao, invites local and foreign tourists to come and join in the celebration of its 405th town fiesta starting from April 1 to April 8.

The name of the town, according to the legend, came from the name of a plant called balangbang. As years passed by, the plant became extinct but the name “Bayambang” was retained and was given to designate the town. Historically, Bayambang was made as the last capital of the Republic by General Emilio Aguinaldo when he fled north to escape from the pursuing Americans during the Filipino and American War.

Originally called Balunguey or Malunguey, the town was established in 1614, the same year that the local parish named after Bayambang’s revered patron St. Vincent Ferrer was founded. What was initially a visita of Binalatongan (the current San Carlos City) only became an independent vicariate in 1619.

St. Vincent Ferrer Statue will be completed on March 24

The grand and colorful event highlights the Parish Jubilee which will happen on April. BayambangueƱos’ celebration is made even extra special with the 400th year of the St. Vincent Ferrer Parish and, worldwide, the commemoration of the 600th year of the death of St. Vincent Ferrer. For four centuries, the parish church which enshrines St. Vincent Ferrer has been a solemn sanctuary for prayer and devotion for the people of Bayambang, its surrounding towns, and even beyond Pangasinan. Its current parish priest is Fr. Allen Romero.

The eight-day affair is filled with various activities in line with this year’s theme “Bayang Pinagtibay ng Pagkakaisa at Pananampalataya Laban sa Kahirapan: 400 Taon ng Pagpapala ng Parokya ni San Vicente Ferrer.” The occasion highlights Bayambang’s latest attempt to enter in the Guinness Book of World Records the Tallest Bamboo Sculpture (Supported) of the town patron St. Vincent Ferrer. Currently, Bayambang holds the world record for the longest barbecue grill.

The creation of the tallest bamboo sculpture (supported) of St. Vincent Ferrer was the brainchild of Mayor Cezar’s wife, Ms. NiƱa Jose-Quiambao, who is a devotee like her husband. The 51-meter tall statue is made of steel frame and engineered bamboo panels as cladding material.

NiƱa assured that this year’s celebration is extraordinary as it coincides with the 400th anniversary of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, not to mention Bayambang’s latest effort to enter their patron saint’s tallest bamboo sculpture (supported) creation in the Guinness Book of World Records.

“When we plan for our town fiesta, we always have the best interest of the BayambangueƱos in mind. We really went all out for this year’s celebration because we want to spread joy and love to BayambangueƱos and to our guests from other towns,” said NiƱa who personally oversees the construction of the statue and devotes time to attending meetings regarding fiesta activities and preparations for the unveiling of the statue on April 5.

On April 1, a grand revelry kicks off the celebration at dawn around the main street of Poblacion followed by a Thanksgiving Mass, Grand Parade, and Opening Program. At 4 p.m. of the same day, the Streetdance Competition will be held at the Bayambang National High School. The day ends with an Inter-faith Thanksgiving for members of the community belonging to other religious groups.

From April 2 to 6, the hardworking people of the community will be honored through the Barangay Night, Farmers’ Day, Educators’ Night, Senior Citizens’ Day, TODA Day, Cultural/LGU Night, Matalunggaring Awards, and Fiesta Negosyante. The youth will have the chance to show their talent through Bayambang Got Talent, Inter-Barangay Sportsfest, and Zumbayambang. There will also be a cook-off called Malangsi Cooking Contest to discover budding culinary talents.

On April 5, the feast day of St. Vincent Ferrer, a Thanksgiving Mass will be held at the parish church followed by a traditional grand procession with statues of the esteemed patron paraded around town. The formal opening of the St. Vincent Ferrer Prayer Park will be held at Barangay Bani at 6 p.m. The highlight of the event is the unveiling of the tallest bamboo sculpture (supported) of St. Vincent Ferrer which is the main attraction in the spacious Prayer Park that will also soon feature a chapel near the base of the statue, fountains in front, candle shed, business stalls, landscaped gardens, and wide open spaces helpful to a person’s meditation and recreation.

Other major events include the Kalutan Year 5: Labi’y Liket tan Gayaga where Vice Ganda, Kamikazee and December Avenue are guest performers; and the Binibining Bayambang 2019, NiƱa’s personal project, is set on April 6. Bianca Gonzalez and Derek Ramsay are hosts while Dominic Roque is one of the judges. Paulo Avelino will serenade the lovely contestants.

Expect the town’s alumni from different educational institutions to come together to reminisce happy memories on April 7 and participate in the Alumni Motorcade and Alumni Night.

The event will conclude on April 8 with a mini-concert, Balikbayan Night and People’s Grand Ball.

NiƱa shared, “Since Mayor Cezar took office in 2016, we have been very hands-on when it comes to the fiesta preparations because we believe that it can be one of the biggest income generators for Bayambang. So, it’s not just about celebrating but also providing a better life to all BayambangueƱos.”

Indeed, BayambangueƱos know how to celebrate the gift of life and what makes them stand out is their immense faith in God. As the colossal St. Vincent Ferrer reaches the heaven, their deep devotion to their patron saint will be rewarded with more blessings as St. Vincent Ferrer intercedes for them.

Meet Ann Puno, the Dessert Genius behind Ann Puno’s Kitchen

Behind every great cook is a lifetime of fond memories of food and the people it was shared with. Ann Puno, the dessert genius behind Ann Puno’s Kitchen, is no exception.

At 59,  Mrs. Puno is a formidable woman: she’s a multi-awarded baker, a successful entrepreneur,
a loving wife, a doting mother, and a cancer survivor.

Her journey from kid in the kitchen at her mother’s elbow to a matriarch and business woman running her own enterprise is a joy to follow; a rare feel-good tale of how one woman listened to her instincts and created a path of her own, lit by moments of love with friends and family.

How it all began

Like many Filipino children, Ann remembers watching her mother and grandmother prepare their meals, busily tending to several pots and pans on top of their trusty La Germania gas range in a well-lit kitchen. “I lived in the province where there were no bakeshops,” Ann says, “but I remember that every birthday, my mother would make us birthday cakes from scratch. Sometimes, she would even make donuts from scratch.”

Later, as a newlywed armed with the same La Germania oven she had watched her mother make her birthday cakes with, she kept baking. She created flavors that won over the Filipino palate, and her cakes grew in popularity. The rest, as they say, is history.

A language of love

Through the years, Ann has constantly improved upon her craft. With her trusty La Germania oven ever by her side, she has founded her business and created a complete system to keep her family well-fed and feeling well-loved.

As her children grew up, they learned to recognize the signs of her love. “They know that [making their favorite dishes] is a way that I offer them lambing, and comfort,” she says. Like her mom, she made birthday cakes for each of her children’s birthdays. When the kids came home, there were always snacks ready for them (and often, their friends). Even when they had grown up and their schedules became less predictable, they knew that their mom always had something waiting for them. “They know that when they come home, there is something good to eat. This is my act of service, this is how I show love,” she says.

Protecting her legacy

As her family grows and changes, her business expands, and her personal journey continues to take her in more directions, Mrs. Puno is dedicated to preserving all the memories that they shared through the years. She keeps records of the dishes she created in several notebooks filled with handwritten notes, some photos, and even mementoes. There’s a collection of books and scrapbooks filled to the brim and that she’s constantly adding to. This will be her legacy to her grandchildren, and for the people her family chooses to bring into their fold.

That, and maybe one of her ovens. She has one heavy duty La Germania oven that she only uses during peak seasons. On the off seasons, it gets thoroughly cleaned, packed up, and carefully stored in a shed behind the house. Knowing how sturdy these ovens are—Ann’s mother’s original oven is still in service after all these years—there’s a good chance her grandkids will still be able to bake in one of hers.

She has always told her children about the value of money and advises them that when you buy something, it should always be of value. Her La Germania oven is a great example. Being one of the most trusted brands in the market, these ovens are made for heavy-duty use, and with the proper care, can go for years without having to be maintained or repaired. That’s great value for money!

It’s the only brand Ann has ever used in her kitchen, and with good reason. Each oven has taken the demands of a growing family and a thriving bakery business in stride. So far, none of them have needed to be replaced, only repaired or added to. To date, she keeps two in her kitchen, another in their vacation home, and another in storage to be brought out when the  demand for her baked goods exceeds the capacity of her two active La Germania ovens.

It has not been an easy life. But it is a rich, full one. “Sometimes, my husband and I like to think back on all we have gone through. Just talking about it, and being thankful, because even if we have had difficulties, we have always overcome them as a family. Looking at where we are now, we can truly say that we have made a home.”
