BDO reiterates fight against account verification scam

Scammers are stepping into high gear with their attacks as the country continues to observe the enhanced community quarantine. A prevalent scam has them posing as a bank personnel and urging clients to verify their bank accounts by clicking on a link. This link then opens a website that looks exactly like a bank’s official website. On this fake website, they trick clients into divulging their personal information.
Personal information includes account numbers, credit card information, online banking login details like usernames and passwords, and One-Time PINs (OTP). It enables scammers to use clients’ identities, access their online bank accounts, and steal their money.

BDO Unibank reiterates that it will never ask their clients to verify their bank accounts. Legitimate bank officers, it says, will never reach out via SMS, call, email, or social media to ask for personal information for account validation.
Banking from home
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), alongside the various banks, have been encouraging clients to bank online over visiting their branches particularly at this time when the entire country is moving to flatten the COVID-19 curve.
Online banking, the BSP adds, promotes social distancing and helps accountholders avoid face-to-face interactions. Above all, staying at home allows them to protect themselves and their loved ones from the virus.
BDO, for its part, continues to encourage its clients to bank from home and enroll to BDO Online Banking. To guide clients who may be banking online for the first time, the bank promotes how-to videos on its YouTube page and has helpful posts on its Facebook page and official website.
Staying vigilant against scammers
Scammers however are taking advantage of the lockdown situation and the added online banking usage. Upping their ante, their attacks now are more sophisticated than ever—their grammar is correct; their communication style is convincingly professional; their fake websites look exactly like their legitimate counterparts. As a result, many, especially first-time users of online banking, are getting victimized and losing their money.
The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) already called on accountholders to be more vigilant: “There have been emails going around informing clients of account deactivation and asking clients to click on a link to prevent deactivation due to COVID-19. We would like to advise against doing so since it will compromise your account security… Banks will never request for your sensitive information.”
Meanwhile, through its #BDOAntiScam campaign, BDO empowers its clients with information that teaches them how to be smarter than scammers. It exposes scam attacks, reminds about the things legitimate bank officers will never do or ask for, and shares defenses such as never sharing personal information and never clicking on links to verify their bank accounts.
Clients who have been scammed, or even just suspect of being scammed, can get in touch with BDO by emailing customercare@bdo.com.ph. They can also log in Messenger, look for BDO Customer Care with the blue verified checkmark from Facebook, and chat with a bank representative.

How to Pay your bills without leaving home

Staying home during the Enhanced Community Quarantine doesn’t mean you have to skip completing important housekeeping tasks - like paying your bills. While payment deadlines for these have been extended, paying on time allows you to easily keep track of your bills and expenses.

Good thing there are apps like PayMaya that allow you to do this for yourself, or for your loved ones, without having to step out of your home. All you need is to access the Pay Bills function of your PayMaya app.

Together, let's continue to stand as #OneAgainstCOVID19. Stay safe!

Emergencies can happen anytime and it’s best to be ready

Nobody could have anticipated the unwelcome surprises that 2020 has so far brought along with it. Some of these include the eruption of the long-dormant Taal Volcano and the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. COVID-19 has infected as many as over 930,000 people worldwide and claimed over 47,259 lives and counting. Statistics like these show that emergencies can happen anytime and it’s best to be ready for anything.

Even though there’s no way to predict life’s unpleasant surprises, we can always prepare to ease some of the burden. Life’s uncertainties may include problems related to health, natural calamities, travel mishaps, and more. Stay calm, consider all your options, consult with experts if you can or read up on books and information, and make a plan.

AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance providers, offers tips on preparing for some of life’s unexpected situations:

Live a healthy life. Chronic illnesses can be avoided by improving your lifestyle. Eat nutrient-rich food, incorporate exercise into your week, and get enough sleep. It’s also a good idea to consider having health insurance to help minimize or eliminate medical expenses. By continually making healthy choices, the quality of your life can also improve.

Have an emergency fund. Start keeping a budget to track your expenses. Also, try to be prudent in managing your budget. Ideally, these funds will provide you with enough cash for three to six months of living expenses and basic needs, should the need arise.

Get protection for trying times. If there’s a pandemic or state of emergency, expenses are bound to go up. There’s no telling when you or a family member may get infected with something as contagious as COVID-19, which is why having health or life insurance is extremely helpful. Insurance can provide coverage for the damages the coronavirus or other health scares can incur.

Keep your home safe and sound. In the Philippines, natural calamities, such as typhoons and earthquakes, can also strike and leave behind wreckage in people’s lives. It’s advisable to have an emergency kit ready and familiarize yourself with all the safety protocols. You can also protect your home and belongings by purchasing property insurance which provides coverage against weather damage, earthquakes and fires.

Travel without worrying. Even when you’re traveling, inconveniences are bound to happen. Aside from having a back-up plan, having travel insurance can cover anything from trip cancellations to lost luggage. At times, accidents or car trouble can also occur even commuting to and from work. Don’t be that stranded driver on EDSA. Get regular car tune-ups and consider car insurance as well. Insurance can help with vehicle breakdowns and emergencies on the road. There is also an insurance policy for every budget.

How Online Learning Boosts Students’ Well-Being at Home

Due to the enhanced community quarantine in many parts of the Philippines, schools are faced with closures and cancelled activities. In a report, UNICEF cited that “almost 90 per cent or 1.5 billion of the world’s students are now affected by nationwide school closures due to the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).”

This has impacted the lives of children and teachers in such a way that their learning and teaching methods have shifted online. Families have embraced online learning to ensure that children continue their education at home and parents’ role has become central to this. But how can parents, teachers and students manage this new normal?

1.     Create better relationships at home by having a study-play balanced lifestyle.
Parents play a central role to a student’s education. Now more than ever, this is the best time a well for parents to maximize their bonding activities with their children by making them a learning experience as well. According to UNICEF, the school shutdown is a “chance to make better relationship with children.” UNICEF encourages parents to have one-on-one time with children and create flexible but consistent daily routines with them. This will also help children to create a balance between studying and playing at home, and not to feel stressed or pressured by the home-school situation.

UNICEF also encourages parents to spend at least 20 minutes or longer in a day with children at home. Have some family games, cook meals, go on virtual museum tours, or watch your favorite streaming series and movies together. It helps children to feel loved, safe, and secured at home during this uncertain period.

2.     Explore digital tools for teaching.
School time can be fun as it helps children grow their social skills. Online learning has disrupted the traditional way of teaching and social interaction between teachers and students. It has, however, presented opportunities for teachers to explore different teaching methods such as online journals, audio books, video conferences or live class sessions.

With so many things happening out there, we don’t want the children to remember this time as boring or isolating. Teachers can bring the outside world to the students at home by encouraging them to read books, watch educational videos, be social by continuously interacting with schoolmates and teachers online, and continue learning at home.

3.     Engage with creative learning activities at home.
Welcome distractions at home. This is the best time for students to enjoy their creative freedom while learning new skills. Let them find helpful distractions especially when they need relief from their school work.

There are many creatives ways to learn online to make the experience more interesting and effective for parents and kids. Your kids may enhance their skills such as cooking, arts and crafts, singing or playing musical instruments. You can also encourage them to help you stitch homemade face masks or protective face shield that can be donated to the community and frontliners. This will help children understand better the situation that they are in.

4.     Teach them the value of kindness.
During this unprecedented time, we hear an increasing emphasis on the importance of obedience, respect, sharing, and kindness for our fellow citizens. This is the time when we reflect on other people’s needs and find ways to help. Being kind to others is a sure way to boost our moral and well-being.

Children are pure-hearted, and their kindness comes in many forms. It is important now to give your kids meaningful ways to spread their kindness. You can encourage them to do simple acts of kindness such as checking in on their friends or talking to their elderly relatives to boost their mood while in isolation, helping on donation drives, or sending encouraging letters, drawings, or videos through e-mail for the COVID-19 frontliners.

To ensure that students will be able to continue their education via online learning, PLDT Home Wifi Prepaid has become more affordable particularly for students and teachers. BRIA Homes shares safety tips during ‘enhanced community quarantine’

To help contain the Covid-19 pandemic, the national government has placed the entire Luzon under ‘enhanced community quarantine,’ which requires enforcing stringent safety protocols in towns and cities all over the region. To date, malls and other commercial establishments have been temporarily closed; all means of public transport have been suspended; and provision of food and essential services is being regulated. Although groceries, banks, and pharmacies remain open, social distancing is strictly observed in their premises.

To further protect its homeowners from the coronavirus, BRIA Homes, one of the leading housing developer in the Philippines, is reminding them to heed the following measures:

Stay at home. Since the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person (generated through coughing and sneezing), and through touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, remaining indoors helps halt the spread of the disease.

For its part, BRIA Homes routinely cleans and disinfects common areas and public spaces in its communities, making these safe for its residents. By ensuring the security of its villages, BRIA also enables homeowners to enjoy home quarantine with their families.

Practice good health and hygieneFrequent handwashing with soap and water and using 70% alcohol for hand rubs help decrease chances of contamination. When coughing or sneezing, it is important to cover the mouth and nose with a flexed elbow or tissue and to dispose of the used tissue immediately. One must also avoid touching one’s eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Eating nutritious food and getting bregular exercise can also boost one’s immune system and help it fight infection.

Clean and disinfect regularlyBRIA Homes enjoins its homeowners to keep their living spaces clean. Frequently touched surfaces such as tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, desks, handles, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks must be disinfected regularly.

Even with home quarantine, BRIA Homes assures its homeowners nationwide that they will be online 24/7 to address their inquiries and concerns.

The property developer also encourages residents to remit their monthly amortization through online channels—online/OTC banking options (Union Bank, Metrobank, BDO, Security Bank, RCBC, PNB, and AllBank) and GCash, an e-wallet that can be accessed via mobile phone. Customers may also reserve and pay online through their official website.

BRIA Homes is a subsidiary of GOLDEN BRIA Holdings, Inc., considered the third largest real estate company in terms of market capitalization valued at more than P250B. One of the leading housing developers in the Philippines, BRIA Homes is primed to bring quality and affordable house-and-lot packages and condominium units closer to ordinary Filipino families. This is the goal that drives every single employee in the company, for which the ultimate fulfillment is seeing a client happily moving into BRIA’s homes.

CPFI adopts enhanced safety measures in manufacturing plants

To meet the upsurge in consumer demand while ensuring the health of its employees against COVID19, Century Pacific Food, Inc (CPFI), makers of tuna and sardines brands such as Century Tuna and 555, is implementing stringent health and hygiene measures in its manufacturing plants to protect workers who continue to work amidst the pandemic.

We stand by our commitment to help ensure food security during the COVID-19 crisis by keeping our plant fully operational,“ says Greg Banzon, EVP and COO of CPFI. At the same time, we have to make the welfare of our employees a top priority to sustain operations during the Enhanced Community Quarantine period.  We have also adopted a variety of actions for the health, safety and comfort of our employees.”

Social distancing, strict hygiene measures, wearing protective personal equipment and   incentives for employees are just some of the practices strictly implemented in CPFI plants to ensure the safety of its employees and its products.

Before employees enter the plant, they go through a strict daily screening that include temperature reading, disinfecting footbaths, and hand washing. Hand sanitizer dispensers are installed all over the plants to sustain disinfection throughout the workday.

Social distancing is also required in all key processes of production with foot markers spread across the tuna and sardine plants in General Santos and Zamboanga to help workers maintain a safe distance from each other. These markers are based on the distance prescribed by the World Health Organization. Additionally, employee-resting areas during breaks are also laid out to ensure proper social distancing.

Employees are provided with masks, hairnets and manufacturing gowns while those who interact frequently with co-workers are required to wear face shields to add extra layers of protection for workers in the production lines.

Implementing these practices consequently adds to overall safety of CPFI canned products, where each can is processed on high heat exceeding 120 degrees Celsius and under very strict quality standards.
CFPI also looks after the well-being of its employees by increasing employee incentives.

Banzon says, “Our employees are the backbone of our operations and we need to keep an eye on their welfare, even more so during this global health crisis when we are doing our part in ensuring food security.

Workers receive assistance in the form of free canned goods for their families, free meals at the plant along with vitamin supplements to boost their immunity. CP
FI was also among the companies who have released the pro-rated portion of the 13th month pay. The company also offers free rides—practicing one seat apart—via the company shuttle for employees living outside the immediate community.

With these enhanced security measures in its manufacturing plants, CPFI ensures the safety of its plant workers and consequently leads to continuous availability and overall safety of CFPI canned products.
