Nestlé Philippines declared new commitments to achieve net zero emissions as a “Kasambuhay for the Environment” on its 110th year

As the world’s largest food and beverage manufacturer, Nestlé is called upon to take a leadership role in tackling climate change, one of the greatest threats to society today. Accordingly, Nestlé is leveraging its global size, scale, and reach to make a difference as it urgently pursues its ambition to halve its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and reach net zero not later than 2050.

Locally, Nestlé Philippines, one of the country’s largest corporations, recently declared new commitments to achieve net zero emissions as a “Kasambuhay for the Environment” on its 110th year. The commitments were announced during the company’s virtual 2021 Net Zero Fair attended by employees and their family members, as well as program and business partners. These commitments aim to support the Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement to reduce and avoid carbon emissions by 75 percent as of 2030.

In tackling the plastic waste crisis, Nestlé Philippines is innovating and developing technology to make its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. At the same time, it is collaborating with public and private sector partners to ensure that none of its packaging ends up in the environment, and to educate consumers about solid waste management.

Last year in August, the company achieved its most important environmental milestone thus far, by becoming the country’s first multinational fast-moving consumer goods company to attain plastic neutrality. This means Nestlé Philippines is collecting and co-processing, and therefore diverting from nature, the equivalent amount of plastic that it generates in its packaging. Since then, it has collected 18,000 metric tons of plastic waste in the last seven months.

The company has also switched to clean energy, and now its factories in Luzon, as well as its Makati office, run on 100% renewable electricity.

Through its NESCAFÉ Plan and the Common Code for the Coffee Community or 4C, Nestlé Philippines is enabling Robusta coffee farmers in Mindanao to learn regenerative agriculture and sustainable coffee production. In particular, the company is helping 1,500 smallholder farmers to reduce their carbon footprint.

On top of these programs, Nestlé Philippines Chairman and CEO Kais Marzouki announced additional commitments to accelerate the journey to net zero. These include collecting and diverting an annual average of 26,000 metric tons of plastic waste away from landfills and oceans – an important step towards ensuring none of its waste ends up in the environment – thereby sustaining plastic neutrality, reducing virgin plastics consumption by 1/3 by 2025,

Mr. Marzouki expressed confidence that the company will fulfill these commitments with the support and participation of its employees and partners.

During the Fair, employees and their families formally pledged in a contract with the planet to actively involve themselves in creating a net zero environment by making sustainable choices, properly managing solid waste, and planting trees.

In a message of support, Senator Win Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, said: “The contributions of the private sector will provide the needed boost in achieving carbon neutrality. Your efforts to transition to regenerative agricultural practices should be adopted as well by others in the manufacturing sector as it will benefit nature and improve the income of farmers.”

“Nestlé's strategy to cut in half its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050 are perfectly aligned with the targets of our country's Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement. By accelerating its actions to tackle climate change, Nestlé will help our country attain its goals in building climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience,” said Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu in another message of support.

Nestlé Philippines SVP and Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Ms. Arlene Tan-Bantoto acknowledged the importance of partnerships with the public and the private sectors in making the company’s ground-breaking environmental initiatives possible. “We are addressing climate change through coordinated action, continuing innovation, and multisectoral engagement, with open accountability as we report our progress. We are the Good Food, Good Life company. We want to leave the legacy of a cleaner, healthier, and more livable planet for the next 110 years,” she added.

“Nestlé Philippines will take a leading role in working towards net zero GHG emissions by integrating sustainable practices in our operations. We will continue to seek out partnerships and collaborate with consumers, the government, industry, NGOs and other stakeholders, as we journey to a net zero future,” Mr. Marzouki said, “Tackling climate change cannot wait, and neither can we. And so let us all move forward for the sake of our children and future generations, rising to the challenges that lie ahead, together and united.”

Featured cast include the following:

Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen: The king’s first-born child, she is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider.  Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen: The younger brother to King Viserys and heir to the throne.  A peerless warrior and a dragonrider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon.  But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…

Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower: The daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.

Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower: The Hand of the King, Ser Otto loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king's brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.

Huawei Philippines kicked off its first virtual campus recruitment this year, themed "A Bigger, Bolder Future"

Seeking to attract local talent and revitalize the job market, Huawei Philippines kicked off on Tuesday its first virtual campus recruitment this year, themed "A Bigger, Bolder Future," in partnership with the top universities in Metro Manila.

Nearly 500 students of Mapua University and other educational institutions in the Philippines participated in the event, as they aspire to jumpstart a career in the ICT industry and be part of Huawei's growing local talent pool.

In her speech welcoming the participants, Jade Cao, Huawei Philippines Human Resource Director, said Huawei aims to develop the Filipino ICT talent and train them in global standards to "make the local talent ecosystem more glorious."

"We believe in collaboration and long-term partnership with Mapua. In the past, a lot of Mapua fresh graduates joined Huawei and already became the key staff of Huawei and fulfilling the vision and mission of Huawei," Cao said, noting that Mapua remains to be the top source of Huawei engineers.

Huawei Philippines' partnership with Mapua University started in 2015 with the Huawei Seeds for the Future Program. Since then, Huawei has launched several successful programs and events, including the Huawei ICT Academy, Huawei ICT Competition and Huawei Sales Elite Challenge in 2019. Last year, Huawei opened its scholarship program to Mapua students.

Mapua graduates who are now working at Huawei Philippines are hoping that more of their fellow Mapuans would seize the opportunity to work at Huawei and gain firsthand experience in their field of study.

Sharing his career journey, John Michael De Jesus, a Mapua graduate of Electronics Engineering and now a radio frequency engineer at Huawei, said he first heard about Huawei when he was in high school.

"I was searching about 3G, 4G, LTE, then I stumbled upon a globally leading telecom vendor, which is Huawei. Then I got interested in joining the company when I was an undergrad because I was studying mobile communications, and it was a major subject and I was passionate about it," De Jesus said during the event.

He encouraged his fellow Mapuans to join Huawei because he "found a better version" of himself at the company career-wise.

For Christian Joshua Ulaye, a graduate of Computer Engineering and now a cloud core network engineer, he was motivated to apply at Huawei because of the experience of his fellow Mapuans.

"I first heard about Huawei when they went to Mapua for a job fair, and I got interested to join the company because of the good experiences I heard from fellow Mapuans working here," he said.

Ulaye added that after he got hired, he realized there is a lot to learn in his line of work. He described his job as "challenging but rewarding."

The career fair with Mapua University is the first in a series of online campus recruitment activities of Huawei Philippines this month. University of the Philippines had the recruitment event last April 22 followed by another recruitment drive on April 28 and April 30, 2021 respectively. Another online recruitment is set this May 2021.

The following job openings were announced at the event: wireless engineer, datacom engineer, fixed network engineer, procurement engineer, supply chain engineer, maintenance engineer, software engineer, civil engineer, RF engineer, electrical engineer, project controller, finance specialist, account specialist, account manager, public relations manager and sales specialist. Graduates from other Universities can submit their resumes as well.

Interested applicants may send their updated resume to ph_recruitment@huawei.com. For more information on upcoming events, please follow Huawei Philippines' Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/HuaweiTechPH.

Teleperformance (TP) partnered with Kythe Foundation for its Virtual Day Camp

In line with its commitment to make a difference in Philippine communities, global leader in outsourced omnichannel customer experience management Teleperformance (TP) partnered with Kythe Foundation for its Virtual Day Camp.

Kickstarting its 25th anniversary celebration in the Philippines, Teleperformance sponsored the celebration which aimed to provide psycho-social support for the children of Kythe, lessening the anxiety of these young pediatric patients who suffer from chronic illnesses. Kythe kids were partnered with TP volunteers and enjoyed a fun program which included animal yoga exercises and storytelling, a safari hunt, trivia games, and even a Talentadong Kythe Kids showcase and Costume Contest.

The activity was done through Citizen of the World, Teleperformance's charitable initiative that helps the world's most vulnerable infants and children meet their basic survival needs and, ultimately, reach their individual potential. Kythe Foundation has been a partner organization of Citizen of the World since 2008.

“At Teleperformance, we truly believe in the importance of giving back and in providing our employees with the avenues to make an impact in communities. As we celebrate our 25th year in the Philippines, we look forward to working with long-standing partners like Kythe Foundation to create more programs like this Virtual Day Camp that will help provide not only for the physical, but the psychological and social needs of children, who are among the most affected by the ongoing pandemic,” said Jeffrey Johnson, Teleperformance Philippines Senior Vice President of Human Capital Resource Management.

The Teleperformance Citizen of the World program has enabled Kythe to carry out the organization’s mission of providing opportunities for children with cancer to learn, play and grow even while confined in the hospital. TP Citizen of the World is one of the few corporate foundations who understand the value of providing psychosocial support to pediatric cancer patients,” shared Maria Fatima "Girlie” Garcia-Lorenzo, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kythe Foundation, Inc.

“Furthermore, TP Citizen of the World provides our patients medical and financial support. This year, there were 18 pediatric cancer patients who were given certificates of completion for their chemotherapy sessions. If in five years, these patients will not experience any relapse, they will be considered cancer survivors. Helping to save young lives…this is TP Citizen of the World’s positive impact on Kythe,” Director added.

Aside from organizing day camps and theme parties, Citizen of the World also provides monthly allowances for the Kythe Child Life Coordinators, who provide psychosocial support to children with cancer and other chronic illness and their families.

TP’s Citizen of the World has also provided medical assistance through the Kythe Adopt-a-Patient Program, which provides funds for necessary medical procedures, medicines, laboratory and other expenses with the hope of providing the child-patient a continuing healing process. In 2020, Citizen of the World has been able to help over 2,000 children, provided over 2,000 Child Life Services and activities over the past 13 years, and providing assistance amounting to almost PHP 3 million in the past 3 years.
