Artificial Intelligence reshapes the insurance industry

AXA Philippines recently participated in the online regional roundtable discussion “Innovating with AI Technologies and Data Analytics” hosted by the Asia Internet of Things, Business Platform (AIBP) Focus, and Dell Technologies. Abby Oliva-Cenzon, AXA Philippines Director for Transformation and Technology Strategic Portfolio, joined the discussion as one of the key panelists and shared insights about AI’s significant and imminent changes in the insurance industry as companies evolve to insurance technology or insurtech.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the insurance industry by helping insurance providers deliver more efficient, effective, and personalized products and services to customers, the discussion revealed.

“Insurtech companies now use technological innovations like AI to redesign the current insurance model, looking to seek more savings and efficiency. Through these innovations, they are looking to offer ultra-customized policies, social insurance and dynamic price premiums,” said Cenzon.

She also shared that since the implementation of AI in the banking and finance industry, insurers have gained a competitive advantage in underwriting, improved claims management, and data-driven development of new insurance products.

“AI widens the scope of data sources that underwriters can use for their evaluations. AI uses big data analytics, allowing to dig deeper visibility into customers’ risk profiles, personally tailoring premiums. AI-based underwriting solutions enable insurers to deliver hyped and customized offerings, resulting in a swift price optimization,” she said.

Moreover, AI has accelerated the time it takes for a customer to buy a policy or settle a claim.

Cenzon added that by leveraging on AI technologies, AXA Philippines was able to establish its Social Media Command Centres. Another application that AXA Philippines uses to deliver faster customer service is MyAXA, a mobile app that allows customers to view their policy details, download policy documents, and make specific policy changes.

Moreover, the company’s Emma by AXA PH app serves as AXA Philippines AI chat bot partner that enables anyone to access AXA Rescue Line for free 24/7 emergency assistance, as well as allows customers to easily file claims and buy insurance online.

When it comes to embracing and utilizing AI, Cenzon also stated that insurance, banking, and financial technology (fintech) industries should work hand in hand to help traditional banks adjust and adapt to AI.

“Partnering with financial technology companies or fintechs can help expand the reach of the various types of available technologies. Instead of viewing them as competitors, AXA Philippines works closely together with fintechs from the FinTech Group of the Philippines where we help each other to adapt and scale,” Cenzon said.

Rapid advances in technologies especially in the next decade will lead to major changes in the insurance industry. AI will continue to redefine the insurance industry, carrying new technologies to create innovative products, harness cognitive learning insights from new data sources, and exceed customer expectations for individualization and dynamic adaptation.

Indeed, according to Cenzon, digital transformation in insurtech is “a game changer on how we see the insurance industry today and in the future.”

Other panelists who were also at the virtual roundtable included industry leaders, namely Dell Technologies Senior Director for Data Center & Compute Solutions Chin Wah Mak, Citibank Vice President and Global Program Manager for CXRam Kishore Jaladanki, and Microsoft Sales Director for Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence – APAC Karthikeyan Rajasekharan.

Huawei to Invest US100M in APAC start up Ecosystem

Huawei announced its plan to invest US$100 million in startup support at the inaugural HUAWEI CLOUD Spark Founders Summit, which took place simultaneously in Singapore and Hong Kong. Huawei said the investment would go towards its Spark Program in Asia Pacific region including the Philippines, which aims to build a sustainable startup ecosystem over the next three years.

Huawei has been helping Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand build their startup hubs. At the summit, Huawei also announced the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, as four additional startup hubs – in with the overarching aim of recruiting a total of 1,000 startups into the Spark accelerator program and shaping 100 of them into scaleups.

Huawei also launched its Cloud-plus-Cloud Collaboration and Joint Innovation Program, to further ramp up its support for startups around the world. Huawei will devote ongoing efforts and leverage its complete business portfolio in the cloud-plus-cloud collaboration space to foster technological innovation, global and local services, and business ecosystems, accelerating the growth of startups.

Three additional initiatives under the Asia Pacific Spark Program were launched: The Spark Developer Program, which aims to nurture a developer ecosystem powered by HUAWEI CLOUD in the Asia Pacific region; the Spark Pitstop Program, designed to onboard and support startups on HUAWEI CLOUD to accelerate product development; and the Spark Innovation Program (SIP), focused on facilitating enterprise innovation through the Spark startup ecosystem.

Huawei Senior Vice President and Board Member Catherine Chen opened the summit by emphasizing how important startups are to social advancement and what Huawei is doing to support startups: "Startups and SMEs are the innovators, disruptors, and pioneers of our times. 34 years ago, Huawei was a startup with just 5,000 dollars of registered capital. Recently, we have been thinking: How can we leverage our experience and resources to help more startups address their challenges? Doing so would allow them to seize the opportunities posed by digital transformation, achieve business success, and develop more innovative products and solutions for the world."

Zhang Ping'an, CEO of Huawei's Cloud Business Unit, noted, "Since its launch in 2017, HUAWEI CLOUD has been the world's fastest-growing cloud, and has driven the growth of countless startups. Last year, we launched the Spark Program in Asia Pacific. Through this program, we are working with local governments, leading incubators, well-known VC firms, and top universities to build support platforms for startups in many regions. Now 40 startups are participating in our program."

Zhang continued, "Starting today, we are stepping up our support for startups through four new initiatives, aimed at cloud-plus-cloud collaboration, continuous tech innovation, global and local services, and high-quality business ecosystems. Today, we launched our Cloud-plus-Cloud Collaboration and Joint Innovation Program, through which we will support startups with US$40 million worth of resources. Half of that investment is coming from HUAWEI CLOUD, half from Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). In 2021, our plan is to support 200 startups in the HMS ecosystem, and share our network of channel resources with developers worldwide who together serve 1 billion Huawei device users. In addition, we will open an HMS Developer Innovation Center to support 100,000 HMS cloud-native developers."

Also present was Dr. Lim Jui, CEO of SGInnovate, who said, "The true impact of the Deep Tech Economy is realized when we're able to come together to catalyze new opportunities. Working alongside partners like Huawei enables us to accomplish our mission of supporting promising talent and emerging tech startups in Singapore."

More and more startups are pursuing end-to-end digitalization as they move towards a fully connected, intelligent world. HUAWEI CLOUD infrastructure works in conjunction with Huawei Mobile Services to support startups from all industries. Huawei's cloud offerings help developers and partners to unify accounts, development platforms, and app distribution and operation. HMS is now the world's third largest mobile app ecosystem, and is helping many startups expand their global influence. Currently, 4.5 million developers from over 170 countries and regions rely on HMS.

Huawei recognizes startups as key partners. At the HUAWEI CLOUD Spark Founders Summit, Huawei unveiled the latest data on its innovation research programs with startups. The data shows solid relationships between Huawei and more than 2,000 partners from across the Asia Pacific region, with ongoing initiatives to build support platforms in close partnerships with governments, top VC firms.

Huawei rounded off the series of announcements with a plan to build an HMS Developer Innovation Center. Through this center, Huawei aims to cultivate future talent in cooperation with 210 leading universities across the Asia Pacific region.

Jeffery Liu, President for Asia Pacific Region of Huawei, added that, "For the past two decades, we have remained committed to being 'In Asia Pacific, For Asia Pacific'. Leveraging Huawei's global customer base and full-stack technologies, the Spark Program will invest more than US$100 million over the next three years, and provide comprehensive support to the establishment of a sustainable startup ecosystem that creates new value for this dynamic region."

This summit was attended by representatives from many prominent Asian startups, academia, various industries and governments, and the media, as well as more than 50 regional top venture capitalists and over 300 startup founders. Speeches and panels at the event focused on the social value of this startup ecosystem and how startups can promote technological and ecosystem innovation, to contribute to local communities and drive socioeconomic development.

Manulife Philippines will be giving Gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz a Manulife Horizons insurance policy

In 2019, when Hidilyn Diaz went publicly on social media to bravely ask for financial support from private companies to help fund her Olympics stint, leading life insurer Manulife was one of those that heeded the call and signed her up as the company’s brand ambassador in the Philippines.

The partnership aimed to inspire Filipinos to work hard, believe in one’s self ― even when faced with the biggest roadblocks ― and turn challenges into life-changing opportunities.

When the pandemic struck last year, the Tokyo Olympics was postponed. Diaz thought her dream to compete and win the gold had ended. Despite the setback, the Filipino airwoman and weightlifter still did the work. In her words, “ang buhay atleta ay training, training, training.” She also believed that the opportunity to represent the country had not been lost.

“Because of uncertainty brought by COVID-19, many of us developed new fears and worries. Despite this, many Filipinos have managed to keep their momentum and focus on reaching their aspirations. Hidilyn Diaz is a great example,” shared Melissa Henson, Chief Marketing Officer of Manulife Philippines.

“The gritty athlete that she is, Hidilyn maintained a positive mindset and continued to focus on her training. Her values and determination truly inspired us, and as Manulife’s brand ambassador, we know that she can inspire our fellow Filipinos to keep focused on their dreams, too,” Henson shared.

“While she had to be away from her family and put her life outside weightlifting in the back seat, her relentless preparation allowed her to qualify for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics this year, and eventually led her to win the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the Philippines. It has been such an honor to witness her incredible journey, and we are so proud of her,” Henson added.

To show their gratitude for the effort and perseverance that led her to the gold, Manulife Philippines has announced that they will be giving Hidilyn Diaz a Manulife Horizons insurance policy with lifetime coverage of Php10 million.

On her Instagram page, where she mentioned Manulife Philippines and the importance of having the right plan, Hidilyn gave a glimpse of a “day in the life on the road to the Olympics,” where her routine consisted of “eat, train, rest” and “repeat but do better tomorrow.” She also shared how “it takes a lot of work, discipline, focus and determination” to see the process through, to make the country proud and bring home the much-coveted gold.

Kahit maraming challenges tayong hinaharap, ang importante ay we never give up, kasi in the end maaabot din natin ang mga goals natin. Laban lang!” said Diaz.

Before her historic and successful stint at this year’s Olympics, where she set a new Olympic record at the women’s weightlifting 55kg division, to win with a total of 224kg in her last lift in the clean and jerk, Hidilyn won silver in the 53kg class in the Rio Olympics in 2016. In Rio, she ended a 20-year Olympic medal drought for the Philippines, and gave the first non-boxing medal for the country since 1936. She also competed in the 2018 Asian Games, where she became the first-ever Filipino weightlifter of any gender to win a gold medal in the regional meet. She is now the first Filipina weightlifter to compete in four consecutive Summer Olympic Games, having also competed in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, where she was the Philippines’ flagbearer during the opening ceremony.

With a growing record of landmark victories, Hidilyn is excited to see what’s in store for her in the future. In fact, she has also been thinking about her retirement plans.

“For sure, marami rin ang nag-iisip ng what’s next? Setting goals and having a plan are important to make sure nasecure ang future namin ng family ko. Savings and insurance ang sagot! I know I can’t compete forever, so dapat nagtatabi kahit pakonti-konti,” she posted on Instagram.

Hidilyn Diaz has demonstrated the importance of creating new beginnings and restarting plans to live the life you want. Armed with more passion, grit, and love for the sport and country, the 30-year-old Olympic champion will surely keep beating the odds -- lifting herself and others up along the way --  and proving that when you work hard and take charge of your future, anything is possible.

Maxicare rolled out the MaxiProtect COVID-19 Vaccination Program

Maxicare is now MaxiProtected! To protect their employees and their families against the COVID-19 virus, Maxicare, the country’s leading premier Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), rolled out the MaxiProtect COVID-19 Vaccination Program last July at the Blue Leaf Cosmopolitan for almost 1,600 employees and their families.

The MaxiProtect COVID-19 Vaccination Program is considered a giant step towards protecting and keeping every Maxicare employee safe against the pandemic, a major milestone for the country’s leading HMO which aims to help the community get back on track. Maxicare also hopes that this vaccination drive will give employees a much needed sense of relief, hope, and optimism. With employees already vaccinated, they can continue to safely provide service to all Maxicare members, which is a key priority.

“Maxicare is classified as an essential service so it’s absolutely critical and important for us to ensure all our employees are protected. We have been waiting for this for quite some time so I’m very happy  that we are finally able to offer vaccination to every single Maxicare employee,” Sean Argos, Maxicare President and CEO said.

“Together with our Wellness team, we had a series of webinars, and lectures conducted by distinguished doctors to create awareness about how important it is to get vaccinated. We believe that through these efforts, we have addressed vaccine hesitancy, and encouraged our employees to get vaccinated.” Dr. Karen AlmonteAssistant Vice President for Clinic Operations and Outpatient Services and one of the program’s head organizers, said. As a licensed medical professional, Dr. Almonte also reminded  vaccinated employees to still practice safety protocols, like social distancing and wearing facemasks for further protection against COVID-19.

Aside from the COVID-19 vaccination program, Maxicare also carried out a slew of initiatives to provide care and support to its employees during the pandemic, such as the option to work from home, subsidies for internet connectivity,  transportation, and hazard pay for those who need to work on site, especially frontliners. Maxicare also built their own quarantine facility in Pasay to provide a safe place for their employees in case of infection.

“I feel happy and protected now that I’m vaccinated. Especially when I go outside, I feel safer and more confident to go to work now that I got my vaccine.’ Roxanne De Luna, a Maxicare Affiliate said.

As Maxicare frontliners, employees Wingie Danao and Grace Vidallon agree that getting  vaccinated is extremely crucial to their work.  “It gives us protection and ensures our safety as we do our duties. Knowing we have been vaccinated  also encourages our patients to get vaccinated as well,” they added.

Immediate family members of Maxicare employees were also included in the company’s vaccination drive. “This vaccination program is really a big help not just for my daughter who is a Maxicare employee but also to our family as a whole. Now that we’re vaccinated, our family can now ease our worries,” Rebecca Lim, a mother of a Maxicare employee said.

Now that Maxicare employees are vaccinated and protected, they are now better equipped to extend this protection to their members. In the coming weeks, Maxicare is eyeing to roll out over 150 thousand more doses of the vaccine until the end of the year and offer the program not just to employees but also to its members.

The same sentiment was echoed by Katherine “Kay” Barcena. After losing her job at the height of the pandemic, it was her advisor Kristine Leechiu-Tan who guided her in making the right financial decisions, that she was even able to start her own business. “It is during these times that their insurance and investment plans really become a lifesaver to these families,” Kristine mused. Meanwhile, Kay’s experience has her wishing the same for others who are pursuing their financial goals. “Just like me, I hope everyone finds a partner for life,” she said.

The stories of Alpha, Buena, Kay, and Kristine will surely inspire those who will catch it on Sun Life’s Youtube channel (www.youtube.com/sunlifeph) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/sunlifeph) starting July 24, 2021.

Such kind of relationships are what makes Sun Life advisors come highly recommended. “We take great pride in having the best advisors in the industry who not only demonstrate integrity and care for our clients but also strive to be partners in their journey towards lifetime of financial security,” Simpao said.

Meanwhile, to further highlight the value of having a financial advisor, Sun Life will be complementing the stories with various activations, including: an escape room dubbed “Escape to the Future”; webinars featuring top financial coach Chinkee Tan; and virtual events featuring the company’s brand ambassadors. Details will be announced on Sun Life’s social media pages.

“We hope this campaign will encourage more Filipinos to find that partner who will help them achieve their financial goals throughout their lifetime,” Simpao said. “Sun Life and its financial advisors are always here to help.”
