ASEAN Foundation Joins Hands with Huawei to Bridge Digital Talent Gap in Asia Pacific

The ASEAN Foundation and Huawei signed MoU on joint efforts to bridge the digital talent gap at the Asia Pacific Innovation Day – Digital Talent Summit 2021 on Wednesday. The online summit brought together policy makers, researchers and industry experts to share solutions and best practices in building a sustainable ecosystem that will help foster digital talents in the Asia Pacific.

The event started strongly with a series of keynote speeches from governments’ leaders such as Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political Security Community H.E. Robert Matheus Michael Tene, Chair of the ASEAN Digital Senior Official Meeting H.E. Dato’ Sri Mohammad Mentek, the Philippine Ambassador to China H.E. Jose Santiago L. Sta. Romana. Their speeches stressed on the importance of key stakeholders’ proactive participation in developing a solid foundation for digital talent ecosystem in the region.

"The Digital Talent Summit 2021, which aims to discuss and address the needs of ASEAN ICT youth talent, is obviously very relevant, especially in the midst of the global pandemic which forced us to significantly rely more on digital platform. This auspicious event is very much aligned with the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 objective of improving people's capability to participate in the digital society economy," said the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political Security Community H.E. Robert Matheus Michael Tene.

The Philippine Ambassador to China H.E. Jose Santiago L. Sta. Romana also gave his remarks, “Today’s program is vital in the achievement of nurturing the young talent who would be at the forefront of future developments in the digital world. The Philippines has engaged major technology companies in the region to actively speed up the adoption of several digital technologies in extending services to the public and to immerse the population, particularly young Filipinos in the digital realm, to improve their familiarity and raise broad-based skills in the use of modern and up-to-date digital technologies. For instance, in improving the Philippines’ telecommunications industry and infrastructure, Chinese technology and telecommunications companies such as Huawei have entered into joint venture arrangements and other forms of collaborations with domestic firms.”

“Innovation and development rely on a talent ecosystem. Huawei is prepared to work with its partners to build a talent development ecosystem conducive to innovation,” Huawei Senior Vice President and Board Member Catherine Chen noted during her opening remarks, “Huawei's 20 years in Asia Pacific have been a journey to find like-minded friends. Let's work together to build an inclusive, innovative, and vibrant ecosystem, attract and cultivate more digital talent, and jointly promote the development and prosperity of the region.”

“Cultivating innovative ICT talent ecosystem is fundamental to the digital transformation. Leveraging shared innovations with win-win outcomes, we can harness the power of ICT skills to

fly us into a digital future. Together with our partners, Huawei will invest $50 million in the next 5 years to develop 500,000 digital talents in the Asia Pacific region,” President of Huawei Asia Pacific Jeffery Liu announced in his keynote speech.

The commitment to bridge digital talent gap in Asia Pacific, in particular ASEAN, was further strengthened with the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN

Foundation and Huawei ASEAN Academy. The agreement highlights both entities’ readiness to implement ASEAN Seeds for the Future, which is a scaled-up version of Seeds for the Future, Huawei’s global CSR flagship initiative that has been providing world class digital skills training for young people across the globe since 2008. Through ASEAN Seeds for the Future, ASEAN Foundation and Huawei ASEAN Academy strive to build the digital capacities of youth in the ten ASEAN Member States so that they can thrive in the era of digital economy.

The ceremony was attended by Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation Dr. Yang Mee Eng and Vice President of Huawei Indonesia Albert Yang, and witnessed by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN Elizabeth Te, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Cambodia to ASEAN H.E. Amb. Yeap Samnang, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political Security Community H.E. Robert Matheus Michael Tene, Deputy Permanent Representative of Republic of Singapore to ASEAN Tham Borg Tsien, and Huawei Asia Pacific Vice President Jay Chen.

The ASEAN Seeds for the Future will help contribute to achieving the objectives of ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025, which are to increase the capacity of youth in the region to participate in the digital economy and to create a digitally inclusive society in ASEAN. The ASEAN Seeds for the Future is set to launch in early 2022, inviting youth aged 15 – 30 in ASEAN to immerse themselves in a virtual journey of capacity building on leadership and digital skills. In the Philippines, Seeds for the Future already covered 110 students over the past six years, in this year 2021, the project will cover another more 100 students.

“We are delighted to sign the memorandum of understanding with Huawei to implement ASEAN Seeds for the Future. It is my belief that this wonderful regional programme will play an important part in bridging digital talent gap in the region by equipping our ASEAN youth with essential skills that will enable them to thrive in the era of digital economy. Our partnership with Huawei also signifies another important milestone for ASEAN in regards to bringing in committed partners from private sector to contribute to youth development effort in ASEAN,” said Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation Dr. Yang Mee Eng.

#TravelAsJuan with Airbnb to the Philippines’ top beach and diving destinations

Known for its pristine beaches and mesmerizing dive spots, the Philippines once again stood out after the 28th World Travel Awards recognized the country as this year’s leading beach and diving destination in Asia.

Following the easing of travel restrictions, some of the country’s top beach destinations including Boracay, Siargao, and El Nido have already reopened to local travellers. Filipinos are already making plans for their next trip to popular hotspots Panglao, Anda, Balicasag, Anilao, Malapascua, Moalboal, and Puerto Galera.

While beaches and diving sites are incredibly popular during summertime – an end-of-year trip might just be what you need to reconnect and recharge with loved ones. For those seeking inspiration for your next trip, Airbnb reveals some of its top Superhost Stays in the Philippines’ best beaches and diving destinations that you can book for that much-awaited getaway!

A vibrant loft perched on a solitary hill in Boracay

Without a doubt, Boracay is one of the most appealing tourist destinations in the country. In fact, trips here always seem to be bitin, because the island doles up the most inimitably chill yet fun vibe. Now that more companies are offering remote work opportunities, it’s a great time to explore living and working elsewhere.

If you have Boracay in mind for a potential workation, Bianca’s Garden Apartments has everything you need for work and play: a dedicated workspace, WiFi, television, balcony and backyard,  a fully furnished kitchen, and a spacious bedroom. It is also tucked away from the crowds of Boracay with incredible views of Bolabog Beach.

An eco-friendly beachside gem in Siargao

Siargao ‘made waves’ after the release of a local film of the same name back in 2017. While well known as a haven for surfers, the island welcomes all groups of visitors.

Hosts Julio and Clydd of Kala’s Cave provide guests with a handy notebook filled with their favorite hidden gems and useful local contacts. But that’s just a bonus as the real star here is their treehouse – an eco-friendly passion project with breathtaking views of the sea and lush palm trees all around, and just minutes away from the famous Cloud 9.

A stylish, luxurious villa in El Nido, Palawan

Visiting El Nido, Palawan is akin to walking right into a postcard so impeccably beautiful it’s earned the title of one of the best beaches in the world more than once.

For your next visit to this paradise, you should definitely look for Casa Malaya — a Pinterest dream come true located just by Nacpan Beach. This tropical designer space with unique antiques has everything you need and more — in-home massages, complimentary bicycles to explore the area, free breakfasts delivered to your doorstep plus a private pool for you to bask in the warm midday sun.

A homey bamboo hut in Moalboal, Cebu

Moalboal is famous for its underwater paradise, especially when you get to dive into its crystal-clear waters and witness the famous Sardine Run. Island hopping and turtle watching are also popular activities in this town - but what really drives travelers to visit is the countryside charm of this coastal town.

Enjoy laid-back vibes at Tongo Hill Cottages, nestled among palm trees and verdant hills. This Airbnb Stay features rows of bamboo-made huts for the adventurous traveler, and each hut comes with its own small porch with a hammock. Every morning, you will be served hearty breakfasts at the terrace alongside a dose of joy from your companions Simba, Buko, and Lily, the rescue dogs residing in this dreamy abode.

A refreshing homestay in Panglao, Bohol

Divers from all around the world converge in Panglao to explore its underwater wonders and rich marine biodiversity — from schools of jacks and sea turtles to sardine runs, dolphins, whales, and lush coral forests.

Planning a longer vacation to fully explore what Bohol has to offer? You can rent Halamanan Villa for an entire month! This tranquil and tastefully designed Airbnb stay is minutes away from Alona Beach, bountiful dive spots as well as local restaurants and coffee shops.

As more destinations reopen across the Philippines, Filipinos are sharing their homes, stories, and love for their hometowns with fellow Filipinos through hosting with Airbnb.  Hosts have also committed to Airbnb’s 5-step Enhanced Clean process, a set of standards developed in partnership with experts to ensure safety and peace of mind for guests.

Heart Evangelista and successful business leaders share investment and financial tips at Manulife Investment Management’s webinar Inbox

As more Filipinos start or grow their businesses during the pandemic, Manulife Investment Management Philippines recently held its “From Passion to Action: Unlocking business ideas and fueling growth potential to achieve financial goals” webinar featuring actress, artist, and entrepreneur Heart Evangelista, Potato Corner co-founder and CEO Jose Magsaysay Jr., and Zalora Philippines co-founder and CEO Paulo Campos III.

Hosted by award-winning broadcast journalist Karen Davila, the webinar aimed to discuss critical business and investment insights to help Filipinos start their business ventures, accelerate business growth, and adapt to today’s ever-changing business landscape.

“Amid the pandemic-induced economic challenges, we recognize that many Filipinos are exploring more ways to grow their money, whether through business, side hustles, or investments. Through this webinar, we want to share more practical ways for Filipinos to turn their passion projects into potential business opportunities and reach their financial goals”, said Aira Gaspar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife IM Philippines.

“Learning from our guest speakers’ inspiring stories, they made bold yet calculated risks to make their dreams a reality. We hope to impart the value of taking the first step, no matter where you start, and making the right financial decisions in achieving financial aspirations,” Gaspar added.

How to start, when to grow

In Manulife’s latest study, “Know Your Ys and Zs: A closer look at the financial and mental well-being of Filipino Millennials and Gen Zs in the time of COVID-19,” some of the surveyed respondents’ top worries include running out of money and drowning in debt. These concerns have fueled their top priorities, which include establishing their own business. A number of the millennials covered in the study have entrepreneurial ambitions that impact the way they approach wealth planning, contributing to their increased focus on investing.

Her drive to be smarter with her finances guides Evangelista’s recent business and investment decisions. “When I first started my career, I was focused on spending my earnings. However, I didn’t want to become a slave to my work to maintain my lifestyle, so I started spending wisely and investing. I listened to experts on how to manage my finances better and where to put my hard-earned money so it can grow and earn. I am lucky to be supported by loved ones and Manulife in my investment journey, and I encourage others to seek advice and guidance from those who are knowledgeable about finance, especially if it’s their first time to invest.”

For those who want to know the secret behind the success of Potato Corner here and abroad, Magsaysay shared, “We have been taking care of our franchisees, as they are the people looking after our customers. We innovate and expand in response to evolving customer needs. Currently, we are on our way from simply being known as the ‘House of Flavored Fries’ into becoming the ‘House of Flavors.’ In business, it is always important to be customer-driven.”

Lastly, Campos talked about how customer-centricity in e-commerce empowered him to succeed in a highly competitive market. “What differentiates Zalora from competitors are our assortment of high-quality and authentic products, as well as our superior customer experience,” Campos shared, adding how harnessing today’s technologies can help aspiring entrepreneurs. “See what you can start on the side while doing your day job. Take it one step at a time. Study how you can use the power of the internet and e-commerce. Now, starting a business can not only benefit you, but can also enable you to help the country recover.”

The webinar also featured Manulife Investment Management’s Head of Fixed Income Jean de Castro, one of The Asset’s 2021 most astute investment managers in the Philippines, and top wealth specialist Cherrie Briñas. They provided insights on the types of investments that Filipinos may consider in growing their money or securing capital to fund their passions.

“From Passion to Action” is streaming on Manulife’s Facebook page for those who missed the webinar.
