The Vero lineup of products are part of Acer’s “Earthion” mission

Acer today announced the Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition (AV15-51R), a special edition of its Acer Aspire Vero laptop and a manifestation of the company’s commitment to a more sustainable future. Each purchase of this sustainably-minded laptop helps support the U.S.-based global nonprofit National Geographic Society in its work to protect our world through exploration, research, and education. To learn more, visit www.natgeo.com/info.

“Acer has been taking steps over the past several years to reduce its ecological footprint. The Vero product lineup, born from our Earthion platform, represents the latest of these efforts,” said James Lin, General Manager, Notebooks, IT Products Business, Acer Inc. “We’re pleased with the reception the Aspire Vero has received from users and media alike, and we hope our efforts will encourage partners and industry colleagues to take similar steps in their own capacity.”

Reduce — Minimal Footprint Design

The original Aspire Vero’s look is defined by the material blend used in its chassis, which consists of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and was carefully selected for its balance of durability, rigidity and aesthetics. Yellow pigment dots contrast with this textured grey surface to give the laptop character, all without the need for any paint. The Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition builds on this design and tells a story in a way that catches the eye.

Users will first notice several diagonal lines running across approximately half of the top cover. A small extract from a topographic map, these lines divide the laptop’s surface into land and sea and allude to the impact of global warming on rising sea levels. Opening the laptop reveals the iconic National Geographic yellow border, which has been printed directly onto the bottom right corner of the keyboard. In yellow print on the spacebar lies the message, “For Planet Earth.”

Reuse — Packaging with a Purpose

As its first impression, the Aspire Vero National Geographic Edition shows that the lifespan of computer packaging doesn’t need to end at delivery. The laptop’s inner packaging has been designed to be a multipurpose box, and it can be repurposed in its entirety after users get their device set up. The box itself has enough character to fit right into the user’s room—perhaps on top of a dresser or the corner of a desk—and its inner partition can be folded into a triangular laptop stand[[i]].

Acer’s innovative packaging design protects the device without the need for anything but 85% recycled paper, plus a 100% industrial recycled plastic (PIR) laptop sleeve and an additional sheet of 100% PIR plastic that sits between the laptop’s display and keys.

Recycle — Easily Upgradeable Laptop

The Acer Aspire National Geographic Edition utilizes 30% PCR plastic throughout its chassis, saving 21% in carbon emissions[[ii]] for the production of that part. 30% PCR plastic is also utilized in the laptop’s screen bezel and 50% in its keycaps, further reducing the computer’s footprint. Looking towards the other end of the laptop’s lifespan, special effort has been paid to simplify the process of making repairs and upgrades. The bottom cover comes off with eleven standard Phillips-head screws, revealing a well-organized set of internals that allows users to easily replace the RAM and SSD.

Powered by an 11th Gen Intel Core processor with Intel Iris Xe graphics[[iii], the laptop’s lighter ecological footprint does not mean that it’s light on performance: It comfortably allows users to create, connect and collaborate. Users can enjoy Windows 11 right out of the box, while Wi-Fi 6 offers ultra-reliable connectivity. The user-experience is rounded out by a generous selection of ports, including USB Type-C and two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, one of which can be used to charge mobile devices even when the computer is turned off.

Acer Earthion

The Vero lineup of products was born under Earthion, an Acer platform that combines the strengths of the company, its supply chain partners, customers, and employees in order to help tackle environmental challenges with innovative solutions. Earthion’s primary topics of focus include Acer’s RE100 commitment to reach 100% renewable energy usage by 2035, the pursuit of greener product design, and efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of Acer’s supply chain.

Exact specifications, prices, and availability will vary by region. To learn more about availability, product specifications and prices in specific markets, please contact your nearest Acer office via www.acer.com.

[i] Suggested for static use (such as video conferencing, viewing videos, etc.).

[ii] Emissions saved compared to regular laptop plastic chassis for laptops of the same size. The estimated value is calculated from PlasticsEurope Eco-profile reports. The comparison is only focused on the material itself and is limited to compare 100% virgin plastic with 70% virgin plastic and 30% recycled plastic while assuming other factors that may influence CO2 emissions are equal.

Shopee partners with several brands to help provide immediate relief to Typhoon Odette victims

Almost a month since Typhoon Odette devastated several provinces in Visayas and Mindanao, millions of Filipinos continue to reel from the aftermath. To support and serve the communities affected, Shopee partnered with several brands and corporations and mobilized its nationwide Shopee Express network to help provide immediate relief to Typhoon Odette victims in less accessible areas.

Reaching the affected communities via Shopee Express

With the typhoon damaging communication and transportation infrastructure, a lot of the affected communities experienced difficulty receiving aid. With its nationwide coverage, Shopee Express trucks and vehicles have been able to transport water, health kits, water filters, solar lights, and other relief goods from brands and organizations such as the Manila Water Foundation, Maynilad Water Services, Inc., Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc., Unilab, Akari Lighting, Envirocab, Socone, Asia Brewery, Inc., Mitsushi, Herco Trading, Inc., Qoncept Furniture, Foodplus, Del Monte, Dohera Corporation, Universal Robina Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, Lions Club International, and Luzon Clean Water Development Corporation.

These donations were brought from Metro Manila to key Shopee Express Sorting centers in Cebu, Bohol, and Surigao for repacking before being distributed to thousands of affected residents across Visayas and Mindanao. With the support from various government agencies, such as the Office of Civil Defense, the Philippine Air Force, and the Philippine Navy, Shopee was able to expedite distribution to these areas further.

Through this nationwide effort, Shopee Express was also able to immediately provide essentials such as water, sanitary kits, and non-perishable food items to around 10,000 of its affected workers, most of whom are riders and drivers.

Despite being among those affected by Typhoon Odette, Shopee Express riders also volunteered to help repack and distribute the donations. Some even decided to donate cash from their own pockets to be used for purchasing relief goods.

Elmer Tapales, who started as a Shopee rider last August, said, “I decided to become a rider because of the pandemic, where it was difficult to find employment. Thankfully, there was an opening here so I decided to apply. We were badly affected by the typhoon but we are grateful for the help Shopee gave us.”

Marijon Pinebro works as a maintenance personnel at a Shopee Express Hub, and Typhoon Odette affected them very much. “Shopee helped me a lot, aside from the financial help I received, they also provided assistance and relief goods. I'm so thankful to Shopee.”

Bernadette Sanchez, a security guard at Shopee Express, said, “Shopee helped us a lot and we got to keep our jobs. Shopee even gave all employees, riders, staff, and guards relief goods and provided the needed assistance. I want to thank Shopee for helping us in times of need.”

Keeping the spirit of generosity alive with Shopee Bayanihan

In partnership with GMA Kapuso Foundation, World Vision, and UNICEF, Shopee raised more than 1 million worth of donations through its Shopee Bayanihan: Typhoon Odette Support initiative, which allows users to donate to the typhoon-affected communities by purchasing e-vouchers on the microsite and checking out via ShopeePay, Shopee’s all-in-one e-wallet. With the donation drive raising more than 1 million worth of donations, Shopee matched the amount to provide an additional 1 million worth of total donations to further support these three charities.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “As soon as we learned about the struggles that our kababayansfaced in Visayas and Mindanao, we immediately mobilized our resources to provide relief quickly. The Filipino spirit of Bayanihan never fails to shine a bright light amidst dark times. We are thankful to our partner brands, generous users, and our employees who went out of their way to provide support to those in need. We hope that our combined efforts will contribute to the recovery and restoring of livelihoods among those affected.”

Personal Collection shifts to biodegradable packaging

Personal Collection Direct Selling, Inc. (PC) has successfully transitioned from recyclable packaging to the newest biodegradable packaging, making it the first company in the Philippines to do so. PC is leading the drive towards ridding the world of plastics that are harmful to the environment by shifting to biodegradable packaging. Its new biodegradable packaging is estimated to decompose in landfills after only five to ten years, while regular plastic packaging may last for at least a thousand years.

BAYAWAN, Negros Oriental. PC employees and dealers from the PC Bayawan branch are shown collecting trash and other debris along the shoreline of Villareal Beach.

The traditional notion that recycling alone could eliminate plastic waste is being questioned by data from the US Environment Protection Agency (FPA) that Americans, for example, recycle only 35 percent of more than 267 million tons of solid waste every year. According to a 2020 study of the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, at the national level, only 40% of packaging waste in the Philippines is collected, and only 9% of the plastic waste is recycled.

DUMAGUETE. Before concluding the cleanup drive, PC employees and dealers from the PC Dumaguete branch invite more volunteers to join PC’s mission.

Keeping this in mind, PC takes a further step by not just going recyclable but also turning to biodegradable packaging. Through the launch of its “A Green Life is A Great Life” movement last June 2020, PC’s network of sellers has been mobilized to advocate for the advantages of biodegradable packaging as their contribution to helping protect the environment. Personal Collection President and CEO Jerome Tuguin said, “We endeavored the shift from recyclable to biodegradable packaging because we believe that this is a sustainable solution that will not only address the major plastic pollution crisis, but will also mitigate many other environmental issues. And we are very enthusiastic to have pioneered this groundbreaking move that also aims to impact the future of every Filipino household.”

MACABEBE, Pampanga. Volunteers stand 1 meter apart from each other while planting mangrove propagules.

PC is also one of the few companies around the world that continues to manufacture the greatest number of biodegradable bottles that are viable for preserving the quality of our environment. Just this December 7, 2021, the company received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, for its invaluable work, strategic measures, and active participation to advocate for environmental protection and sustainability amidst the threats of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jerome Tuguin expressed, “We continue to look into more programs and initiatives to support our #GreenLifeGreatLife movement. Last October, we started our coastal cleanups in some parts of the country, and just recently, we planted more than 70,000 mangroves in over 27.5 hectares of reforestation sites in Pampanga and Bataan.”

As part of PC’s primary environmental advocacy, a long-term partnership with Marine Conservation Philippines was made to conduct coastal cleanups in different areas of the country. Last October 26, 2021, PC facilitated its first coastal cleanup at Albiga Beach, Siaton, in Negros Oriental. Subsequently, the Siliman Beach cleanup in Dumaguete on November 16, 2021 took place, followed by the coastal cleanup in Villareal Beach, Bayawan on December 14, 2021. In all these cleanup activities, tons of plastic waste and other toxic materials were collected.

UnionBank clients can now do their online shopping direct through Shopee and Lazada

UnionBank clients can now do their online shopping more conveniently through the country’s major e-commerce giants Shopee and Lazada -- by directly cashing-in their e-wallets. This new option opens another channel for Bank customers to do their online transactions seamlessly.

Surely, buying essentials online has never been this easy! Shopee and Lazada buyers can now easily cash-in, in real time from their UnionBank accounts. Customers also enjoy discounts and added benefits with their online purchases, for every top-up transaction.

This was made possible with the collaboration of tech savvy ShopeePay, Lazada Wallet and UnionBank, combining the power of three digital leaders.

“These partnerships are timely especially now at a time when e-commerce and cashless transactions are exponentially rising. This ensures Filipinos can participate in the headwinds of innovation and a better, more seamless customer experience as a result.” shared by Erika Denise Dizon, UnionBank FVP and Head of Fintech Business Group.

Here’s how it works. To cash-in your ShopeePay using UnionBank Online Banking, go to ShopeePay Wallet, select Cash-in, enter the amount, select online banking as the payment method, and choose UnionBank. You will then be directed to the Bank’s online banking to confirm the transaction.

For Lazada Wallet, click the wallet icon on the upper right portion of the homepage. Select the cash-in button, enter the amount, and select “Add UnionBank account” in the Cash-in Methods page. You will then be directed to the Bank’s online banking site for confirmation of the transaction. Then enjoy shopping!

Gear up for hybrid work with the HP Pavilion x360 14-inch laptop

Contrary to what some people may think, millennials and gen Z-ers have a lot of similarities. Both generations were born in the digital age, meaning they’re comfortable handling gadgets for personal use, hobbies, and professional settings. They’re also known for their motivated, on-the-go nature, which is why it’s important for them to have a reliable laptop to help them achieve whatever they need to accomplish, wherever they go.

For those looking for a high-performing laptop, the HP Pavilion x360 14 Convertible PC might just be the perfect fit for them. Here’s why:

Work, play, and everything in between

Multitasking is important for millennials and gen Z-ers who want to get things done quickly and efficiently. With up to Intel® Core™ i7 processors, the HP Pavilion x360 can make users feel like they’re unstoppable when they have multiple applications open. One can guarantee instant responsiveness and faster Wi-Fi 6 connectivity while doing any task.

Apart from its performance, users can likewise customize the way they use the HP Pavilion x360 with its three modes: laptop, tent, and tablet form equipped with a sensitive touchscreen and pen. All these are optimized for work, gaming, streaming, virtual hangouts and everything in between.

A device fit for Hybrid Possibilities

Many people are already expecting to work in a hybrid setup by sometime next year, so it’s important to have a compact and sturdy laptop that’s easy to carry around. The HP Pavilion x360 14 is made with recycled aluminum that’s lighter but doesn’t compromise durability.

Power through tasks effortlessly while on the go with the HP Pavilion x360’s longer battery life. And with HP Fast Charge, users can recharge their laptop up to 50% within 30 minutes. The laptop also has Perpetual Microsoft Home & Student Office Preinstalled for one’s typing needs anytime, anywhere.

Headphones not required

When working from home, people sometimes move around their house during meetings. Thanks to powerful audio by Bang & Olufsen, one won’t need headphones to get all the information they need. The speakers are also best at playing music and even have the option to hold solo dance parties, during off days.

Sustainable impact

Millennials and gen Z-ers are known to be more conscious of their carbon footprint, so HP used recycled materials to build the Pavilion x360 laptops. The speaker housing and bezel are made from ocean-bound plastics, while the HP Pavilion x360 14’ FF+ C cover is made from recycled aluminum that gives a premium finish. Its packaging and fiber cushions are also made from 100% sustainably sourced materials.

The younger on-the-go generation will certainly get their money’s worth with the HP Pavilion x360 14 with its compact and versatile design, high-performing specs, and parts made with environment-friendly materials. All things being considered, it’s definitely the laptop worth considering for next year’s Hybrid Possibilities.
