Golden Haven holds Nationwide Pet Walkathon

It was a delightfully bright and sunny day when doggies of all shapes and sizes headed out to select branches of Golden Haven Memorial Parks to —with their excited humans in tow, of course. 

Between the adorable pups and their families, it was hard to tell who had a greater time as they bonded, played, and strolled at the lush and beautifully landscaped environs of Golden Haven Memorial Parks in Las Piñas, Bauan, and Sariaya in Luzon; Cebu and Iloilo in Visayas, and Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, and General Santos City in Mindanao.   

Golden Haven’s Nationwide Pet Walkathon featured activity stations for the furry babies; energy-burning obstacle courses; and even pet shop booths for a lively day outdoors. Freed from restrictions and set loose in the soothing green spaces of the memorial parks, pets and pet owners alike savored breathable fresh air, sunny blue skies, calming views, and natural vitamin D. 

Heartwarming scenes showed the frisky pups making friends with each other. As they did so, their fur moms and dads followed suit. After all, Golden Haven’s Nationwide Pet Walkathon was for creating lovely new memories, too. 

 

To cap the unforgettable day, each furry participant received a certificate of completion, as well as a commemorative photo, for joining the walkathon.

Huawei: Digital Innovation Never Stop for a Greener Intelligent World

Huawei plans to boost investment in innovation to build new products, to enhance and accelerate new technologies. The company held its 19th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen from April 26 to 27.

For more than 30 years, Huawei have been innovating nonstop to create value for our customers and society. Innovation has become a core part of Huawei's DNA. Despite considerable operational challenges over the past few years, we have continued to steadily increase our investment in R&D. For nearly a decade, our strategy has been to re-invest at least 10% of our annual revenue back into R&D. Last year, we invested 22%. Huawei's Rotating Chairman Ken Hu said during the event.

Hu went on to discuss the specific initiatives that Huawei is working on to realize its vision for the future. "We are currently focusing on three areas: strengthening our approach to innovation, equipping all industries with the tools and knowledge they need to go digital, and helping build a low-carbon world."

According to him, Huawei sees two major trends: all industries are going digital, and the world is setting its sights on low-carbon development. “Needless to say, no organizations these days are asking themselves whether or not they ought to go digital. They're more concerned about how to go digital and how to do it well.” Said Hu.

In Huawei’ view, the ICT and finance industries were first-movers, so their transformation goes deep – all the way down to their core production systems. Industries like electric power, fuel, and manufacturing are using digital technology to solve production challenges, whereas the digital journey of industries like real-estate, construction, and agriculture has only just begun. Because these industries are at different stages of the transformation process, they naturally have different concerns.

For the past 10 years, we've been going through our own digital transformation. We've gained a lot of valuable experience along the way, Hu said.

Moving forward, Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. "We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society," said Ken Hu. "We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener intelligent world."

Ken Hu, gave a keynote on Huawei's approach to innovation and building a greener intelligent world. "At Huawei, when we talk about innovation, the first thing we think is people. We hope to attract world-class talent with world-class challenges, and work together to push the limits of science and technology," said Hu, referring to the Top Minds recruitment program that the company launched on its website yesterday. 

 

"We don't care where you’re from, where you graduated, or what you studied,” he continued. “As long as you have a dream for the future and believe you can make it happen, we want you to come and join us. We provide world-class challenges, a powerful platform, and all the resources you need to explore the unknown."

Hu went on to discuss the specific initiatives that Huawei is working on to realize its vision for the future. "We are currently focusing on three areas: strengthening our approach to innovation, equipping all industries with the tools and knowledge they need to go digital, and helping build a low-carbon world."

 

The following is a summary of these three initiatives.

 

Innovating nonstop and advancing the industry:

 

          In terms of connectivity, Huawei continues to drive the industry forward. The company announced its vision to enable 10 Gbps connections everywhere with 5.5G and F5.5G, the next evolutions in wireless and fixed networks. Together, these will support a broader range of niche network requirements, including a more immersive experience in homes as well as the low latency and high reliability needed for industrial control scenarios.

 

          In terms of computing, Huawei is redefining system architectures for individual nodes, foundational software, and data centers in an effort to significantly increase system performance and energy efficiency.

 

          In cloud services, Huawei is building MetaStudio, a cloud-based, end-to-end digital content pipeline that will greatly expedite digital content production.

 

          In terms of devices, Huawei aims to provide consumers with a user-centric intelligent experience in all aspects of their lives – what the company calls a Seamless AI Life experience – effectively accelerating the convergence of the physical and digital worlds.

 

Diving into digital transformation to create new value for customers:

 

          Huawei is adapting its products and product portfolios to different industrial scenarios. At the same time, it will start pre-integrating and pre-verifying products, doing all the complex work beforehand to make digital transformation easier for its customers and partners. With Huawei Cloud as the foundation, Huawei aims to provide "Everything as a Service", turning infrastructure, technology, and expertise into cloud-based services, and making cloud migration easier for customers in different industries.

 

          Huawei is also building integrated teams that focus on specific industries, bringing a specialized group of experts closer to customers' business challenges and more tightly incorporating horizontal resources, i.e., products and capabilities from partners. The goal is to provide targeted digital transformation solutions for each industry and respond more rapidly to customer needs.

 

Optimizing power supply and consumption with digital technology to enable low-carbon development:

 

          Huawei is redefining the PV sector with AI, cloud, and other capabilities to boost the generation of renewable energy.

 

          Huawei is also developing system-level low-carbon solutions for green ICT infrastructure, focusing on wireless base stations and data centers.

 

Moving forward, Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. In addition to its innovation strategy, Huawei also shared its far-reaching vision for the future and some of the exploration it's doing to get there. Dr. Zhou Hong, President of Huawei's Institute of Strategic Research, said that "everything we imagine today is very likely to be too conservative – too little – for tomorrow. We have to meet the future with bold hypotheses and a bold vision, and throw caution to the wind as we push to break through bottlenecks in theory and technology. This is the only way forward."

Here in the Philippines, Huawei also had several programs for cultivating the local ICT talents, such as ICT Academy, Seeds for the Future, covered the Philippines for years, benefited over 9000 ICT students, according to Daniel Guo, the Vice President of Huawei Philippines.

 

In the event, Dr. Zhou outlined ten challenges that Huawei hopes to address moving forward.

 

Two scientific questions:

 

          How do machines perceive the world, and can we build models that teach machines how to understand the world?

 

          How can we better understand the physiological mechanisms of the human body, including how the eight systems of the body work, as well as human intent and intelligence?

 

Eight tech challenges:

 

          New sensing and control capabilities, e.g., brain-computer interfaces, muscle-computer interfaces, 3D displays, virtual touch, virtual smell, and virtual taste

 

          Real-time, unobtrusive blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart monitoring, and strong AI-assisted discoveries in chemical pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and vaccines

 

          Application-centric, efficient, automated, and intelligent software for greater value and better experience

 

          Reaching and circumventing Shannon's limit to enable efficient, high-performance connectivity both regionally and globally

 

          Adaptive and efficient computing models, non-Von Neumann architectures, unconventional components, and explainable and debuggable AI

 

          Inventing new molecules, catalysts, and components with intelligent computing

 

          Developing new processes that surpass CMOS, cost less, and are more efficient

Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation makes education accessible to grassroots communities


REBUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION. Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation (CLFI) supports the rehabilitation of Marawi by providing learning tools and devices in Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School (APCES) for its alternative learning sessions. Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (CLFI), the social responsibility arm of Cebuana Lhuillier, the largest micro financial service provider in the country, celebrated the launching of its 100th Alternative Learning System-Community Learning Center (ALS-CLC) at Amai Pakpak Elementary School in Marawi City. 

The 2017-armed conflict caused massive destruction that displaced a great majority of Marawi city’s population. As the local community leaders work towards rebuilding the lives of affected individuals and families, CLFI extended assistance to Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Office of Marawi to foster recovery and learning continuity amid present conditions. CLFI donated ICT equipment and supplies for the ALS teachers in Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School. 

“As part of its inclusion advocacy, CLFI is always committed to provide accessible quality education for all, especially for the underserved Filipinos. To significantly help the rehabilitation efforts of Marawi, we focused our efforts on education—ensuring that children and adult learners have access to basic education,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier. 

To fully equip the newly established ALS-CLC in Marawi City, CLFI donated learning tools and devices, including laptops, printers, LED TV, Wi-Fi routers, and load cards -- which will further enable ALS teachers to facilitate online and modular learning sessions for 400 registered ALS learners.

“The entirety of the city schools division of Marawi would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our great partner, Cebuana Lhuillier. Driven by its advocacy to make education accessible, CLFI has always been a staunch supporter of DepEd’s ALS program. Since 2013, CLFI has been supporting ALS community learning centers to give out-of-school youth and adult learners a second chance at education. 

“The 100th ALS-CLC sponsored by the Foundation is a testament to our firm belief that all Filipinos should have access to quality education. We are elated to see how the company’s advocacy for education can uplift both young and adult learners and help improve their lives,” First Vice President and Group Head for CLFI, Jonathan Batangan said.

In line with the recently held Earth Day celebration,up in the air and on the ground, Cebu Pacific continues to take its responsibility to sustainability, its commitment to humanitarian assistance, and wildlife conservation, to heart.

 

Filipino travelers can also do their part throughout the year by choosing to fly green with Cebu Pacific. The Philippines’ leading airline was recently featured at the Singapore Airshow after Airbus chose Cebu Pacific to showcase its newest Airbus 330neo aircraft.

The A330neo is the greenest aircraft in Asia. The aircraft has the lowest carbon footprint per passenger per kilometer. Its 459 seats are lightweight Recaro and the aircraft burns 25% less fuel than previous generations. Flying on reduced carbon emissions, the A330neo is the first aircraft in the world certified to meet the 2028 CO2 emission reduction target. 

 

At the prestigious Singapore Airshow last February, Cebu Pacific Chief Executive Adviser Mike Szucs said, “It is important for us to offer value service to our passengers and do it in a sustainable manner. The A330neo is a testament to our commitment to environmental and social sustainability, in line with our target of operating an all-Neo fleet by 2027.”

 

On the ground, Cebu Pacific has partnered with wildlife conservation and humanitarian groups such as Waves for Water, a global group in the frontlines of providing access to clean potable water, and the Philippine Eagle Foundation, which leads the conservation of and care for Philippine Eagles. 

 

Cebu Pacific’s continued partnership with Waves of Water has proven to be crucial for communities around the country in times of natural disasters and humanitarian crises. When typhoon Agaton made landfall in parts of Eastern and Western Visayas early this month, it resulted in more than 175 deaths and hundreds more missing. Cebu Pacific was quick to actively help in the relief efforts spearheaded by Waves of Water in the towns devastated by landslides and flooding.   

 

 In December 2021, when typhoon Odette devastated several provinces and islands in the country, Cebu Pacific and Waves of Water transported water filters to six provinces, including Siargao island, the hardest-hit community by the typhoon. Water filters mitigate the risk of water-borne illnesses such as cholera, salmonella, giardia, E. coli and typhoid. Clean water also impacts on infant care and feminine hygiene. 

 

To date, Cebu Pacific has flown over two tons (1,447 units) worth of water filters, free of charge, as part of its bayanijuan initiative. The airline’s wide domestic network in the Philippines is crucial to getting help on ground and in communities that need it most—and need it immediately.

 

“It has always been part of our Filipino bayanihan spirit to assist in relief operations wherever we can. We all know Siargao was one of the destinations severely affected by the Super Typhoon Odette and we prioritized our response with the immediate transport of essential goods especially the water treatment needs of the community,” said Michael Ivan Shau, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Cebu Pacific.

Celebrating outstanding members of its Customer Service team, three Operations Assistants share their proudest moments and the challenges they have faced and overcome on the job and in life as they continue to grow with Ninja Van Philippines.



Joy Velonza

A chef by profession, Joy did not initially see herself in the customer service (CS) industry. Before being part of Ninja Van Philippines, she worked in Qatar and the United States of America (USA) for four years. “Being a chef is hard especially when you’re far from your loved ones. After I decided to come back home, I began exploring opportunities in the CS industry since both of my siblings are also in the same field,” she said.

 

As a newbie, Joy felt a lot of pressure at the beginning but with training and guidance from her managers, she was able to learn the ropes and fulfill her responsibilities as Consignee Support. According to her, one of the most memorable concerns she handled was a lost parcel containing an engagement ring that was supposed to be delivered on Christmas Day.

“I was responsible for the ticket and exhausted all my resources to find the parcel. After everything was resolved, the consignee sent me a picture of his fiancee wearing the ring and thanked me for my help,” she shared.

After a year, Joy was transferred to the Shipper Support Team. The transition was a challenge but just like before, she was able to adapt, thrive, and continue to be one of the best performing Operations Assistants in the team. Joy aims to continue forwarding her career by hopefully landing a managerial role in the company and also venturing into entrepreneurship.

Jessalyn Ducot

Just like Joy, the CS industry was not the first choice for Jessalyn who was originally an auditor. She knew she was not happy with what she’s doing so eventually, she decided to do a career switch. It was in October 2020 when she started working at Ninja Van Philippines as part of the Consignee Support team, eventually increasing her portfolio to include e-commerce clients.


“What I love most about working at Ninja Van is the healthy atmosphere. There is no competition or office politics. My managers and team leaders are also very supportive,” she said.

 

When it comes to her role as an Operations Assistant in the CS team, she finds the most fulfillment in assisting and resolving clients’ concerns. Despite some being more difficult to handle than others, she remains patient and tries her best to remain calm even if there’s aggression coming from the other line.

 


CJ Escala

For CJ, landing a position at Ninja Van Philippines after losing her previous job during the onset of the pandemic was really a blessing. “I’m very happy to work at Ninja Van because I enjoy taking on challenges and being creative in resolving issues,” she said. “I also appreciate that I am part of a solid team.”

 

Working in this industry, however, will always have its set of challenges. CJ cited irate clients who get mad at CS representatives as the most common for her. In order to overcome these, she trains herself to have a stronger mindset, focus on work and not take negative feedback personally. As a result, CJ always ranked gold when it comes to achieving KPIs. 

 

Moving forward, she aims for growth in both her personal life and career. As someone who used to struggle with depression, CJ is looking to continue her healing process with the help of the love she receives from her family and friends, and the fulfillment she gets from working in the company.

 

Difficult circumstances may have led Joy, Jessalyn and CJ to where they are now in their careers, but it is fortunate that they have found happiness in being able to help provide clients with the best customer experience throughout the entirety of their transactions.
