Pfizer partners with multiple organizations to deliver medicines and vaccines to isolated Mindanao community

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer partnered with a number of agencies and organizations to launch a project that would see crucial medicines and vaccines easily delivered by drone to an isolated rural Mindanao community in the town of San Luis, Agusan del Sur.

The partnership also includes Geneva-based nonprofit drone organization WeRobotics, innovation solutions company Philippine Flying Labs, and the provincial government of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao. 

The initial pilot run saw drone pilots, with at least 1000 hours of drone training and flying experience, make deliveries of maintenance medicines, COVID-19 vaccines, medical equipment such as needles and syringes, and water samples for testing to the community of Kilometer 55, Barangay Binicalan in San Luis. 

The project—which was first conceived in 2020 with technology originally field-tested in the Dominican Republic—took two years to plan, with the community chosen due to a real pressing need as the area can be cut off from roads during the rainy season, where the roads are impassable. The community is also prone to various public health concerns, such as diarrhea, malnutrition, hypertension, and diabetes due to its isolated and underdeveloped nature.

“We’re not here to replace any existing delivery service here, we are here to augment and enhance the current system,” said Dr. Heidi Sampang-Abiad, managing director at Philippine Flying Labs. “For example, the habal-habal costs P5000 to P6000 and can take up to five hours to go back and forth from the community. The system can also get limited by many factors, and the drones are reliable, and are a good addition to strengthen the last mile health service delivery in the country.”

“When this opportunity came up we quickly raised our hand and said yes, we want to be part of this program. We have a number of islands here that have difficulty accessing medicine, and we have resources that are willing to take part, who just want to help,” said Ken Millan, digital lead at Pfizer Philippines.

One of those areas with difficulty accessing medicines and other healthcare services is the town of San Luis, and this project is a promising step to addressing this concern. “We are grateful to our partners for this groundbreaking initiative,” said Gov. Santiago Cane Jr. “The Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur is open to innovative projects such as this one which can improve healthcare access to our isolated communities.”

After the completion of the pilot run, Pfizer hopes to continue developing the project through the establishment of partnerships with organizations to potentially take the project to other isolated communities around the Philippines.

World Vision Philippines launched its Back-To-School Program to help enable and empower children

With school season fast approaching, World Vision Philippines launched its Back-To-School Program to help enable and empower children to have joyful experiences in this school year and beyond.

 

According to the World Bank, learning poverty reached an all-time high in the Philippines last 2021, with 90% of children still unable to read by age 10. The same report found that only 26.9% of Filipino students had broadband internet access, while distance schooling only covered 20% of children in the country. Even with access to online learning, children ages 12 and below have been found to have trouble focusing on on-screen lessons. Because of this, many children miss out on the development they need at such a young age. 

With the Back-To-School Program, World Vision aims to help the most vulnerable children continue schooling despite the pandemic and other calamities plaguing the country. By distributing learning kits to students, learning modules to remote communities and financial aid to families at risk, the organization hopes to provide vulnerable communities with the support they need to bring back joy and hope to students as they begin a new school year.

 

Rommel Fuerte, the National Director for World Vision Philippines, said, “Many students who do not have access to school essentials feel limited and unmotivated to attend their classes. Our hope is that by providing students with what they need for the school year, they will be able to feel more confident and hopeful in working towards their dreams. With your help, we can change lives for the better and enable children to have more joyful school experiences in the near future.”

World Vision Ambassadors and Advocates also shared their heartwarming messages in support of this year’s Back-To-School efforts.

 

“School is such a great place to be in. I have so much fun playing with my classmates, writing and learning many interesting facts. “These times have been difficult for parents, with the struggles of working from home. Imagine how difficult it must be for students and children as well, to not have social interactions with their fellow classmates,” said World Vision Ambassador Jasmine Curtis-Smith. “If children are having difficulties adjusting now, what more those who have no proper access to internet? What more those who have no basic learning materials like crayons and notebooks?” she shared.

 “With just PHP 1,000, which we can set aside over a few weeks, we can help two children get the school supplies they need for the rest of the school year,” Jasmine added.

 

Since 2020, the Back-To-School Program has managed to donate nearly 88,000 learning kits and 36,000 learning modules to vulnerable communities across the country. Shopee develops young leaders in tech through the Global Leaders Program (GLP)

Alyana, one of this year’s GLP associates currently completing her first rotation under the Marketing department, shared “There is no better place for me to build my career in tech than at Shopee. Meet Nestlé PH Name First Set of IdeaNation Champions!

Nestlé Philippines in partnership with the Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) has launched the Net Zero IdeaNation, a program where ABME10 (Foundations of Entrepreneurship) students were challenged to ideate innovative business concepts and solutions centered on Nestlé Philippines’ three net zero focus areas.

 

From 90 teams, 18 were selected to advance to the Net Zero IdeaNation Grand Finals that was held virtually on July 15, 2022. Before this, the finalists first underwent a mentoring session led by experts from Nestlé Philippines to help them further develop and polish their ideas for the pitching competition that took place from July 13 to 14.

 

In the end, three teams were named as the first set of IdeaNation Champions.

The University of the Philippines Los Baños, together with Nestlé Philippines, celebrates youth innovation with its Net Zero IdeaNation competition

 

The Coffee Cubes concept of Team Cris’ Angels, composed of Aneka Abarrientos, Mahonri Alquisalas, Justine Faith Deverla, Angel Vi Manong, Ma. Jhoanna Zapico, clinched the 2nd runner-up award.  Their product offers the beloved Filipino commodity, coffee, in a compact, travel-friendly form, which comes in 100% plastic-free packaging. This aims to uphold sustainable material packaging and reinforce coffee plantations in the Philippines.

 

BayanBiogas, a community-based generation of sustainable and alternative LPG from manure and food waste, bagged the 1st runner-up award. Aside from the champions, Nestlé Philippines has selected Hijo Hija Enerhiya! as the team with special citation for their concept about innovative playgrounds and parks that can generate electricity through tiles and equipment with built-in Piezoelectric Transducers. The innovation is conceptualized by Abbey Jimenez, Mariellen Silab, and  Leara Varquez.
