Expert shares 3 key insights on why proper handwashing is important this Christmas

The holidays bring much-awaited face-to-face reunions and gatherings with families and friends, and the frenzy makes it easier for you to let your guard down. Without proper precautionary measures, you may end up spreading more than just good cheers.

Being a trusted expert at germ protection and disease prevention, Safeguard Philippines ramps up its hand hygiene advocacy this holiday. Here are three key practical handwashing knowledge and tips that they recommend:

 

1.    Hands are the root of most sicknesses

In his lecture during Global Handwashing Day 2022, P&G Principal Scientist David Khoo revealed that "Scientists and doctors would agree that the main way germs infect us is through our hands."

 

Just think about all the times you unconsciously put your hands on your face after touching bathroom surfaces or holding onto money. These everyday instances can be opportunities for germs and viruses to be picked up and passed on. 

 

2.    Washing with soap and water does make a difference

Now that we know how easy it is for our hands to spread disease-causing germs, it is crucial that we remember to wash them regularly and properly. According to the gold standard set by experts, this means washing our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

 

As Koo demonstrated during his lecture, 20 seconds is just enough time for the soap lather to create bubble-like structures, trap viral matter and other biomaterials, such as grease, oil, and dirt, and flush them down the drain.

 

An easy and fun way for families and kids to gauge if 20 seconds have passed is to use a familiar song that lasts for the same duration. Singing the Happy Birthday song twice is one such example.

 

3.    It’s best to wash hands with running water compared to still water.

Aside from demonstrating the seven-step handwashing routine, Koo also debunked some common handwashing myths, including one that claims that a bucket of water is just as effective as washing our hands with running water.

 

He clarified, “Anytime you have a standing bucket of water (water that isn’t flowing or running), the first time you use it, it may be clean. But after that, the germs may be left behind and they will grow. So, the next time you use it, you will potentially reinfect and contaminate your hands with the germs that are growing in that standing water.”

8 in 10 Consumers Expect to Gain Weight at The End of The Year

ASIA PACIFIC,-- Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition released the findings from its 2022 Asia Pacific Holiday Eating Survey today, which revealed that 80% of consumers expected to gain weight during the end of this year because they are less healthy than usual during this time of year. The respondents admitted to not getting enough sleep or keeping a regular sleep schedule, and eating unbalanced meals due to stress, lack of time and the temptation of holiday meals.

The survey also showed that one in three (32%) consumers are still carrying the weight they gained at the end of last year. Despite this, respondents are still planning to be unhealthy this year — in fact, five in 10 respondents (51%) are using the end of the year as an excuse to postpone eating healthily.

“Many people overeat during holiday family and friend gatherings, but by consuming some protein rich snacks before the party, you won’t feel as hungry and therefore reduce the chances of overeating,” said Dr. Kent Bradley, Chief Health and Nutrition Officer at Herbalife Nutrition. “As our enjoyment of food is often in the first bite, it's best to enjoy the taste with just a small bite and avoid the discomfort of overeating this holiday.”

The average consumer expects to gain two kilograms before 2023 — on top of any weight they’re still carrying around from last year.

When it comes to eating habits, some respondents take this to a more extreme level than others: 38% have eaten more than one dessert at a meal, 37% have eaten more than three meals in a day, and 34% admit eating more than one of the same meals in a day (for example, two dinners). 

 

While many are planning to end 2022 on an unhealthy streak — they’re planning to start 2023 with a clean slate. 

 

The majority (58%) of those surveyed said they are making New Year’s resolutions, most of which are related to health. The top resolutions were:

●      Eating healthier (59%)

●      Saving money (57%)

●      Exercising more (56%)

●      Improving work-life balance (53%)

●      Focusing on self-care (50%)

 “The New Year is an excellent time to get back on track with a renewed commitment to year-round health, and although it’s common to gain weight at the end of the year, the most 

successful New Year's health resolutions combine nutritious balanced diets and exercise, along with specific and attainable goals,” added Bradley.

 

Herbalife Nutrition’s Asia Pacific Holiday Eating survey was conducted by One Poll among 2,250 respondents in the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.
