foodpanda recently expressed its commitment to fighting hunger and promoting sustainability through " Let’s Do Our Pau-rt!" campaign


Leading online food and grocery platform foodpanda recently expressed its commitment to fighting hunger and promoting sustainability through its flagship advocacy program, Let’s Do Our Pau-rt! (LDOP).

The announcement was made during the launch of their 2021-2022 Corporate Social Advocacy Report, where they shared the company’s outreach initiatives and key programs for the past two years, including during the height of COVID lockdowns.

At the event, foodpanda simultaneously launched its enhanced sustainability program, Let’s Do Our Pau-rt. 

The company first introduced LDOP late last year as a program to help build an economically inclusive and environmentally-resilient Philippines. With the program’s expansion, LDOP will still include protecting the environment and fostering community development as key pillars, while adding the mission to fight hunger as one of the focus areas.

"Focusing on these main pillars, we are looking at a clearer path towards creating meaningful change to communities," said foodpanda Philippines Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Daniel Marogy, adding that they want their efforts to make a broader and more holistic impact not just to the country, but also to the world. 

In 2015, United Nations (UN) member states, including the Philippines, committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 everyone would live in peace and prosperity. Marogy pointed out that the three pillars of LDOP will touch on key areas of the SDGs.

"We are at the forefront of a growing movement that will positively impact our surroundings and the communities we serve. The launch is also perfectly timed with the celebration of our 9th anniversary as we showcase what else we can offer to make a difference to the lives of our partners and the society,” Marogy said. 

Taking action against hunger

The latest Sustainable Development Report data shows that the country faces major challenges in SGD 2 (Zero Hunger), which also supports what the local Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey found that around 2.7 million Filipino families experienced hunger in Q1 2023.

To help address this challenge, foodpanda has developed several initiatives under the LDOP umbrella such as the ShareTheMeal program, which is a meal donation feature built in the foodpanda app that will allow users to easily donate meals after checking out their orders. 

Launched in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the ShareTheMeal program will benefit local farmers from disaster-prone areas in the country. Since the Philippines faces a trend of frequent climate emergencies, thousands of farmers and fisherfolk’s livelihoods are affected yearly, leaving them with wiped-out harvests and farm income loss. 

“Farmers are one of the most affected by natural calamities as it destroys their crop and livestock production – which is their source of income and oftentimes, what they also eat. By joining and partnering with WFP in this advocacy, we can help provide meals to thousands of Filipino farmers,” Marogy explained. 

The ShareTheMeal program is an extension of a global partnership launched by parent company Delivery Hero SE with the WFP. As of December 2022, the food meal initiative has now donated over 10 million meals globally. "As we want to be the complete food ecosystem in the market, it's only fitting that we also do our part to help address hunger with the abundance of food resources that we have so that we can also join the fight against global hunger," Marogy said. 

Aside from the app feature, foodpanda is also partnering with Scholars of Sustenance, a global food rescue foundation, to donate food items from its pandamart grocery delivery service to communities in need. Marogy shared that they are also planning to enlist the help of its partner restaurants to also encourage them to donate their excess food items. 

Being pau-rt of a better PH

Throughout 2021-2022, foodpanda implemented key programs supporting its social responsibility and sustainability goals. 

LDOP encourages its community of employees, vendors, delivery partners, consumers, and other stakeholders to take part in taking care of the environment. The foodpanda PH Chief added that a huge part of their LDOP program is focused on promoting biking as a safe and sustainable mode of transport. "Our delivery fleet consists of 22% of Ka-pandas using bicycles, which allowed us to achieve 25% of orders delivered using bicycles."

This advocacy also led them to form a formal collaboration with the National Bicycle Organization (NBO) and support biking-related activities and initiatives. 

Marogy declared that they intend to ramp up efforts to tackle the protection of the environment as this is still an existing problem in the country. The recent SDG report revealed that the country continues to face significant challenges in SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities). "As this is ingrained in our company core values, we want to continue and strengthen our efforts to contribute to a more sustainable future through and for our people, partners, and communities."

Meanwhile, foodpanda also did its share of providing livelihood opportunities and building resilient communities. 

“With our pandaBIZ program, many displaced workers, especially during the pandemic, had the opportunity to find alternative sources of livelihood as part of our Ka-panda fleet. On the other hand, our BuyAnihan Palengke initiative connected beneficiaries – consisting of former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), out-of-school youths and single parents – with sources of resaleable agricultural produce.”

Meanwhile, pandaSHARES mobilized donations and emergency assistance to the marginalized sectors or communities affected by natural disasters as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility program. "The Bayanihan spirit is deeply rooted in the Filipino culture; that's why we supported relief efforts directed at disaster-stricken communities and programs that help uplift the less fortunate," Marogy said.

Watsons partners with drybrush Gallery for “Reuse with Watsons: A Sustainability Art Exhibit”


Sustainability has always been ingrained in Watsons’ DNA. The leading health, wellness, and beauty retailer is always at the forefront of helping educate and encourage customers do their part in saving the planet and encouraging them to make it a better place to live in for future generations.


Watsons has also integrated sustainability into its corporate strategy with initiatives like Sustainable Choices and encouraging volunteerism among its employees, pushing boundaries to show its customers that it can walk the talk. 


As part of its sustainability initiatives and to celebrate Filipino artistry and talent, Watsons, in collaboration with drybrush Gallery, launches “Reuse with Watsons: A Sustainability Art Exhibit” held at drybrush Gallery in SM MOA Square, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.


Watsons hopes the art exhibit will be an avenue to raise public awareness about the importance of reusing by showcasing art pieces created from discarded materials such as plastic bottles/containers, plastic wrappers and containers, paper/carton boxes/tissue, blister packs, metals, sponges, foam, brushes, and cosmetics) collected from Watsons’ Recycle for Rewards Campaign/ Products found in Watsons Stores. 


The exhibit also seeks to continuously educate and inspire the public to practice Reusing and the 3RS (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) as these would contribute to the preservation of our planet. 


The participating artists were tasked to create art pieces that integrate discarded materials sourced from Watsons Stores and from all the entries, the three outstanding artworks, which best fit with the theme of the exhibit, will be chosen. 


The artists that will be featured in the exhibit are Iñigo Acuña, Astrid Anabo, Neptalie unzo, Arnel Borja, Meijan Cabagay, Ape Castillo, Jeff Dahilan, Ronwaldo Dasal, Cesar Dela Torre, Angelo Delola, Daniel Dumaguit, Noli Española, Juno Galang, Esther Garcia, Ann Gatdula, Loise Angelo Go, Edgardo Granada, Anne Labesores, Ronald Limayo, Linggit (Briks Benigno), Ricardo Mallari, Ron Masaga, Luisito “Jon” Paras, Pancho Piano, Isah Rodillo, Roland Rosacay, Ferdinand Sanchez, James Sanorjo Jr., Rinald Sotto, JL Timbreza – Siao, Dominic Urbano and Ariel Villalobos.

The top three artists will be chosen based on Creative Reuse (50%), the extent to which discarded materials are creatively repurposed and transformed into the artwork; Aesthetic Appeal (30%), the visual impact and artistic quality of the artwork, considering elements such as composition, use of color, texture, and overall craftsmanship; and Environmental Message (20%), the artwork's ability to convey a message of environmental sustainability, raising awareness about the importance of reusing and reducing waste, and inspiring consumers to adopt more eco-friendly practices.


“We are very happy with our collaboration with drybrush Gallery, which helped greatly in making all this possible.  To the participating local artists who have tremendously supported us and have given their whole dedication in creating art pieces using sustainable products from Watsons, we salute your passion and your love for our planet,” said Watsons Sustainability and PR Director Ms. Viki Encarnacion.

Here are some things to keep in mind, whether as a first-timer or as a repeat borrower


So how does a potential pause on the central bank’s rate hikes affect you, as a consumer? Rising interest rates make borrowing money more expensive. This has a direct impact on things like your credit card bills, new loans, and mortgages. So should the BSP decide on pausing policy rates on June 22, this means that you don’t have to worry about rising interest rates if you’re planning to borrow money for a new car, home, or even to expand your business. 

 

While this may be encouraging, there are still many factors to consider before taking up a loan for a big purchase. Before you start heading to a bank, here are some things to keep in mind, whether as a first-timer or as a repeat borrower: 

 


Review your current financial health. 

You need to look at your financial health first. Do you have existing debts, which you need to prioritize and pay off soon? Can your emergency fund cover unexpected expenses? Can you use your savings or extra cash to pay for a big purchase? 

 

Make sure your loan’s purpose is clear. 

Loans should help improve the quality of your life or generate economic value for you, such as learning new skills which can help you get promoted in your job. In the case of thinking of purchasing a new condo— think of its actual benefits: will it be better for you and your wallet to buy a condo vs. to just rent? Remember, banks will also evaluate your application and the interest rate they will give you based on your loan purpose.

 

Determine your capacity to pay a loan back. 

Is your current income enough to pay for the money you will borrow? Do you have other assets that you can submit as collateral? After you have checked your sources of income and your monthly budget, see if you have enough to take in a loan. If you are diligently budgeting, adjust it to fulfill your loan payments. 

 

Lending institutions, especially banks, use the debt burden ratio (DBR) to compute the loan amount you can repay, including the amount you can borrow. This is shown as a ratio of the needed loan payments to your monthly income. Lenders often use this to gauge if you are a capable borrower who can qualify for a loan. 

 

The debt burden ratio or DBR is your total monthly loan payments divided by your monthly income. It is expressed in percentage. The higher the DBR, the less your financial capacity to pay for additional loans. So a higher DBR will likely mean that your bank will give you a lower loan amount or might not approve your application at all. 

 

Personal finance experts vary in their recommendations on the acceptable total monthly loan payments. As a guideline, your total loan payments should be in the 30%-35% range of your monthly income.
