Academy Award Winner Stromberg Directs "Maleficent"

OSCAR-WINNER ROBERT STROMBERG DIRECTS “MALEFICENT”

Robert Stromberg, who won Oscars for production design for both “Avatar”and “Alice in Wonderland,” steps up to the plate to direct his first feature film, Disney’s “Maleficent.” About taking on the large-scale project, Stromberg says, “I think as an artist you’re always looking for the biggest canvas you can find and it was yet another big canvas to conquer. I thought it was intriguing and fascinating to take on something that was bigger than something I had already done; it was a challenge.”

Stromberg was excited about taking on directorial duties and creating a vision for the film. He says, “Luckily for me, there are a few big projects in the rearview mirror, so I was actually more excited than nervous about any of this, including working with Angelina Jolie. I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have the opportunity to do a project of this size, so why not take that and make the most beautiful thing that I can make out of it that the world might respond to in a new and exciting way?”

Stromberg feels that “Maleficent” gives audiences “an opportunity to find out the history of Maleficent and find out where she came from and what pushed her to the point where we all know her to be. So we get to not only see her when she was a child, but what she went through that drove her to the dark side.”

Director Stromberg and screenwriter Linda Woolverton were in agreement that they wanted to start off the story seeing Maleficent as a young child. “We actually get close to her right off the bat in the beginning of the film, and then we see how she meets Stefan,” says Stromberg. “Stefan and young Maleficent form a bond together early on in the film and so we get to see how that tragically widens over the film as they split and how they, over time, become enemies.”

With Angelina Jolie cast as Maleficent, Stromberg could not be happier. “Angelina Jolie is obviously perfect for the role,” comments Stromberg. “It’s the perfect marriage of actress and role in my opinion in a long time, and I think that ‘Maleficent’ will take us to a place where the audience will have fun seeing where she came from. There’s a lot of dark and a lot of light and there’s even humor in this film. There’s a little bit of something for everybody.”

Everyone familiar with Disney’s classic “Sleeping Beauty” knows what the animated Maleficent looked like, so getting the look right for the live-action film was important to both Stromberg and Angelina Jolie. “Angelina was really passionate about not only who the character was, but what the character looked like,” says Stromberg. “We worked together to come up with a character that wasn’t that stereotype image but was close enough that people would immediately know her to be Maleficent. We see Maleficent through different stages in her life and several types of looks up to the point where we see her as the iconic image that we all know.”

Stromberg set out to bring his vision and the magic touch of his designs to “Maleficent” and relates how he approached the task, saying, “The other projects that I've done have a certain look to them and what I wanted to do on this film is not only have an element of fantasy and a surreal quality, but also make ‘Maleficent’ a bit more grounded in reality. In my other films, I’ve always taken the surreal elements and made them the strongest points and in ‘Maleficent’ we’ve started with real and are augmenting after the fact. It’s a new look.”

Research for the look of the film involved looking at a lot of reference materials. “In this case, I looked at a lot of classic paintings done by artists in the 17th century and 18th century, like The Hudson River School artists who just went out and painted landscapes that they heightened a bit,” says Stromberg. “So that became interesting to me, to create this classic look that has mostly realism in it and see where we could push that. It’s actually turned out to be something that’s quite elegant and beautiful but yet you get the sense that there’s fantasy involved.”

It was also important to Stromberg as a director to have enough of the elements of the 1959 animated “Sleeping Beauty” so that people will not be disappointed. “It was important that those people who recognize and are fans of the original classic film feel that they can not only see it realized in a new light but also see the genesis of some of those things that they saw in the original film,”explains Stromberg. “So it’s a new spin on Maleficent but at the same time we’ve woven in enough elements that people will immediately recognize it to be from the original film Sleeping Beauty.”

On completing his first directing job, Stromberg remarks, “I personally had a great time working with the actors, just opening up a new door for myself in communication and how that relates to the timing of other things and how art crosses over into the performances. For the first time, I’ve seen all the colors on the palette and that makes me really happy.”

Robert Stromberg hopes “that people who see this film will be not only thoroughly entertained but also feel that they have been immersed in a world and in a story that they wanted to stay in.”
Opening across the Philippines on May 28 in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D, “Maleficent”is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Travel coaches gear up for Cebu Pacific’s Juan for Fun

Cebu Pacific Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge Adventure Coaches during their briefing at Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu: (from left) Paolo Abrera, Gretchen Ho, Jude Bacalso, Bogart the Explorer and Luke Landrigan. They are all excited to help their respective teams through various challenges and cheer them on through social media.

Excitement is mounting as Cebu Pacific, the Philippines’ leading airline, gets ready for the Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2014. Now on its third year, Juan for Fun promises a bigger, more adrenaline-pumping escapade as it brings five university teams on an all-expenses-paid trip to seven different destinations, not just in the country but also abroad, for nine straight days.  To help the teams on their quest, Cebu Pacific has tapped five noted personalities known for their love of travel, to play the role of Adventure Coaches. Volleyball star Gretchen Ho, Internet celebrity Bogart the Explorer, sportsman and TV host Paolo Abrera, champion surfer Luke Landrigan and travel writer Jude Bacalso will serve as mentors for each team during the course of the challenge. They will also stay in touch with their respective teams—as well as cheer for them—through social media.

For Coach Paolo, the Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge is a great way to introduce people to the possibilities of travel. “The challenge can show people that you don’t really need that much money to have fun and explore,” he said.

“Travel is one of the most enriching things that you can do to educate and make yourself a better person. It’s one of the best teachers we can have,” he added.

Coach Bogart added that the Juan for Fun is indeed an exciting opportunity to instill the love of travel among students everywhere. “I want these kids to love traveling and to share that love with their friends. When you go backpacking, you see the value of things that you need as opposed to things that you want,” he said.

“As the cliché goes, it’s not the destination, but the journey. And traveling to seven destinations for free? That’s already a prize in itself!”

Lessons on the road.  The Adventure Coaches also shared a few tips and pointers in advance for teams to have an even more enriching and memorable experience during the Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge.  “Don’t be afraid to ask” is Coach Luke’s advice to the student teams. “If you’re in a new place, the locals there will know the best places to go to and great deals that will make the trip more enjoyable,” he said.

For Coach Gretchen, the most vital traits that the teams should have are understanding and patience. “I’ve been in sports for a very long time and I know what it takes to win. I’m very competitive but I’m a team player as well,” she said. “Communication is also very essential. Right at the very start, the teams should delegate their tasks and assign who’s in charge of what. It makes the team more solid and therefore, work together better.” Coach Jude added that each team should also be responsible travellers wherever they go. “It is important to respect the customs and traditions of the people that you meet. Get to know the locals and make new friends to broaden your perspectives,” she said.

Go on the ultimate adventure. The Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2014 was open to all university and college students who have an insatiable thirst for adventure and a knack for budget travel. To qualify, they had to form a team of three members and upload a video that answered the question “What’s your idea of a fun adventure?” to www.juanforfun.com. Teams will find out their destinations before the challenge kicks off on June 24, 2014, and they have until July 2, 2014 to have as many fun and exciting experiences and discoveries within a given travel allowance. To earn extra points and additional prizes, they must also complete the special fun challenges prepared by Cebu Pacific in each destination.

The trio with the most number of fun activities out of their given budget, and the highest standing in the Special Fun Challenges, will win the competition and score awesome prizes to go on even more exciting trips. Prizes include 12 round-trip tickets to any Cebu Pacific international or domestic destination of their choice, plus over Php150,000 worth of other exciting prizes such as Canon Powershot SX510HS cameras, Vaude Sapporo Carry-On Trolleys, Vaude Hogan Ultra-Light Tents and a whole lot more.

The Cebu Pacific Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2014 is co-presented by Jack ‘n Jill Magic Crackers, with the support of Vaude, Merrell, Canon and the Department of Tourism, and the endorsement of the Commission on Higher Education. Be a part of this exciting adventure and join the Cebu Pacific Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge now! Follow the escapades of these adventure coaches and their teams on www.juanforfun.com. Novuhair Nature's Answer to Baldness

Alopecia Areata : More than just common hair loss

Society considers hair to be an important part of how you look, how you style and wear it affects one's personality. There is a social stigma attached if you are balding, or starting to lose your hair. Hair loss can affect your sensuality and how you perceive yourself. There are usually emotional trials when it happens especially if you are young or at a vulnerable time in your life.
Both emotional and physical stress (such as a serious illness or recovery from surgery) have been associated with hair loss.  Stress induces hormonal changes are also responsible for the hair loss, since hair loss is a known consequence of other hormonal changes due to pregnancy, thyroid problems, or even from taking oral contraceptives. Alopecia areata is a very common, coin-shaped temporary hair loss patch that usually resolves on its own. “A disease with unknown causes is very difficult to treat. This is the case with alopecia areata,” said Dr. Rica Mallari of the Philippine Dermatological Society.

Prevention includes good hair hygiene, regular shampooing, and good nutrition. Speaking of shampoos and hair products there is an all natural products available in the market today, and that is Novuhair. Dubbed as nature’s answer to hair loss, Novuhair is made from all-natural ingredients, including moringa oleifera, panax ginseng, virgin coconut oil, as well as the essential oils of rosemary, peppermint and lavender. Collectively these ingredients help improve blood circulation and increase nutrient flow to the scalp.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder where the immune cells of the body go against the hair follicles making the hair strands weak at the base and easy to pluck. It is characterized by bald patches on the scalp that may join together and eventually render an individual hairless. Alopecia areata and may also attack other hairy parts of the body such as the eyebrows and pubic area.
Alopecia has many types, among them are pattern hair loss or common baldness; telogen effluvium or temporary hair shedding; and alopecia areata which is considered the hardest to treat.

“The disease has a genetic predilection, meaning there are more chances of getting it if there is a family member affected. It is however, not infectious as no organisms are involved. Though inconclusive, extreme stress is said to trigger the condition in genetically susceptible individuals,” added Mallari.

“There are a number of treatments and products for different types of alopecia depending on the case. It is important that the affected individual seeks help from an expert, preferably from a dermatologist of the Philippine Dermatological Society so that the condition can be evaluated and proper advice can be given,” said Mallari.

Novuhair contains an all natural products consists of the following that is beneficial to one's hair.
Moringa oleifera or malunggay is one ingredient that helps restore the skin’s condition and prevent falling hair. Sweet almond oil, another ingredient, is a moisture-rich oil that contains vitamins A, B1, B6 and E, as well as minerals such as magnesium and iron. Scientifically known as prunus amygdalus, sweet almond oil easily penetrates the hair shaft and follicles, relieving hair dryness and itching and providing nourishment to the hair to promote hair growth.

Lavender helps relieve itching, and like rosemary, another ingredient, it contains properties that help combat dandruff and disinfects the scalp. Lemongrass helps clean the scalp’s pores, while peppermint is known to slow the growth of bacteria and fungi, aside from having a relaxing effect on the muscles.

Novuhair users already notice a decrease in hair loss after only just one week. Hair growth becomes evident with regular use of the product. Once desired results are achieved, Novuhair may still be used as hair and scalp maintenance.

In response to growing demand from its users both here and abroad, Novuhair is now available in a special 2-in-1 Plus One pack, a combo inclusive of Novuhair Shampoo, Topical Scalp Lotion, plus an additional bottle of Novuhair Shampoo.

Just recently, Novuhair introduced two of its latest endorsers – TV host Kim Atienza and singer-songwriter Abby Asistio.

Atienza, fondly referred to as 'Kuya Kim’, is an advocate of true health and wellness. He believes in the use of all-natural ingredients and Novuhair is as natural as a hair remedy could get.
Meanwhile, Abby Asistio knows how it is like to live without hair. She has suffered from alopecia areata at a very young age, and until recently, has lived bald under wigs, hats and bandanas. Today, with the help of Novuhair, the entertainer is experiencing hair growth on her scalp for the first time in years.

The problem with the Philippine market, is that Filipinos are not too discriminating with quality as they are still getting into the milk tea lifestyle.  Sadly, they have difficulty even distinguishing brewed milk tea from a powdered source.  All milk tea tastes the same, they will say.  Just like wine and coffee, one develops the taste buds with time.  Connoisseurs will agree on what makes a quality milk tea brand different from the common or badly-brewed ones.

What makes Fiftea different from the other brands?

First, the trained baristas.  Unlike the other companies whose habit is to change their baristas every six months, Fiftea maintains the people they train.  They have to complete 2 years in the company before they are deployed to franchises.  In that way, every milk tea served maintains the high quality and consistency trademark of Fiftea.  The baristas are carefully handpicked and screened prior to employment.

Second, the brewing process.  No self-respecting high end milk tea brand uses powder, always
brewed.  Water is boiled separately before adding the tea leaves to get the freshest flavors and nutrients minus the bitterness from overboiled leaves.  The recipe is strictly followed, maintaining the golden ratio in every cup.  No additional sugar or water to adjust the quantity.  Even if the order is customized, quality and consistency is still maintained.  Containers for brewing and mixing are cleaned right away so as not to dilute the next cup of milk tea.

Third, the ingredients. The tea leaves are imported and sourced from a reputable grower of tea leaves.  So the final flavors sharp, distinct, and natural.  No chemicals are needed to heighten the flavors.

These are trade secrets that customers are not aware of, but should be wary of it the next time they order their milk tea.

So what are you waiting for? Go and try your first cup of fresh, creamy, natural and refreshing Fiftea milk tea and tell us the difference.

Frank Coraci back to directing "Blended"

“WEDDING SINGER” DIRECTOR FRANK CORACI BACK WITH “BLENDED”

Frank Coraci, director of Warner Bros. Pictures' new comedy “Blended,” knows the undeniable onscreen chemistry between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore well, having watched it develop while directing the pair in “The Wedding Singer.”

“They clicked immediately,” he recounts. “We were all very young and having a great time and I think so much of what worked on that movie came from how easily the two of them played off each other and could joke around and make each other laugh. On ‘Blended,’ they were better than ever. It’s their familiarity and comfort with each other that makes them comedically fearless. And because of their mutual respect and affection for one another, no matter how far they push their feisty banter, there is always an undertone of sweetness that comes through.”

“Blended” not only offered the two stars the chance to recreate their magic on screen but to expand their romantic repertoire as single parents Jim and Lauren, in a scenario that many people can relate to. While struggling to make a living and raise their kids as best they can, looking for love is a more complicated proposition than it once was, involving after-school schedules, babysitters, curfews and tough questions. Priorities have shifted. No longer a matter of just finding that one special person, it’s now about finding that one special person who will also be good for your children. Very often, it’s the dreams and desires of the adults that are the last item on the list.

The timing for Sandler and Barrymore was ideal, Coraci notes. “What’s different about the two of them this time, which was really appropriate for the story, is that, like their characters, Drew and Adam are both parents now, with all these added responsibilities. Whereas those earlier movies were more about first love and just starting out, this is about two people who never lost that capacity for fun and romance but have also experienced more of life, and they definitely brought that wisdom and perspective to the roles.”

Screenwriters Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera took the essence of that idea and instead of securing the relationship first and then trying to rally the offspring, took a different approach. “We thought it could be more interesting for two people to have a disastrous blind date and then be forced together with their kids to share a family vacation,” says Menchell. On top of that, “They take over this package from someone else, with all the things those other people had put into play, whether a romantic dinner or what the kids were going to do, so these two are now living someone else’s dream, which is their nightmare.”

Additionally, says Sera, “We wanted to have a place where they would be confined and couldn’t leave, so, once they both committed to the package, there was no way out.”

Placing the story in such an exotic and expansive setting also goes a long way toward dragging Jim and Lauren out of their daily routines and comfort zones—as well as, maybe, their assumptions about each other—and toward a rush of experiences they couldn’t have imagined having, let alone enjoying, weeks ago. Even if it’s because they have no choice.

“In some ways,” Coraci suggests, “Dating with kids isn’t essentially that much different than dating without kids. Either way, it often starts with the most important element of all: a sense of humor.”

Opening across the Philippines on June 11, “Blended” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation of a Gulfstream Pictures/Happy Madison Production and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.
