Zara and Uniqlo topped Carousell Philippines’ most-searched for secondhand items

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, leading multi-category platform for secondhand in Greater Southeast Asia Carousell Group released the Carousell Recommerce Index (10th Anniversary Edition) revealing the sustainability impact its collective community has made by buying and selling secondhand items.

Over the past decade, Carousell Group’s users have extended the life cycle of millions of items, including: 76.8 million fashion items; 33.9 million electronics; 26.6 million hobby items and toys; 11.1 million home items and furniture; and 10.6 million babies & kids items.

To further illustrate the impact, the number of used fashion listings can provide 70% of the population in the Philippines with an outfit. Additionally, assuming all used electronics listed are iPhone Xs, the height when stacked together is the equivalent of over 1600 times the height of Mount Pulag.

The report also highlighted key trends in each market, specifically for the Philippines:

Top 3 most popular categories to sell secondhand items are Fashion, Hobbies & Toys, Babies & Kids

Top 3 most popular secondhand category to browse are Fashion, Hobbies & Toys, Electronics

All-time top 3 most-searched keywords for secondhand items: Zara, Uniqlo and iPhone

Recommerce refers to the selling and buying of previously-owned products, including both new and used in condition. The report covers data from 9 of Carousell Group's family of brands across Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets — Carousell, Cho Tot, Laku6, Mudah.my, OneKyat, One Shift, Ox Luxe, Ox Street, and Refash.

Since its inception in 2012 as a mobile-first app to make selling and buying underutilised items easier, Carousell has grown from a C2C classifieds marketplace into a multi-category platform for secondhand goods in Greater Southeast Asia. To accelerate the next decade of recommerce, the Group has been working on additional capabilities to offer more features and services to users that make buying secondhand items as trusted and convenient as buying brand new items.

Djon Nacario, General Manager, Carousell Philippines, said, “As Philippines slowly recovers from the financial impact of the Covid pandemic, we see more and more consumers considering and buying secondhand as their first choice. The Carousell Recommerce Index serves as a crucial guide to help us better understand the fast-changing consumer behaviors in the post-Covid era, and how we can explore developing additional features to help improve the marketplace experience, and provide even more frictionless ways to drive recommerce growth.”

Carousell recognized 182 users in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore for their outstanding achievements

I have been on Carousell for almost 5 years now. Its been my sideline selling everything from makeups, shoes, cellphone to bags. So far, all of my items were sold. I have also bought some personal things from a respected seller. I have been happy doing my business in Carousell. Thank God that I have never encountered bogus buyers and sellers. Its been good doing business at Carousell.

Last week, Carousell recognized caroupreneurs (sellers/buyers) at Vikings NIU, Podium QC.

Leading recommerce group in Greater Southeast Asia Carousell, is pleased to recognize 182 users in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore for their outstanding achievements throughout 2021 at the Second Caroupreneur Awards. The Awards celebrates a wide variety of outstanding achievements of Carousell users, ranging from entrepreneurs who started their businesses on Carousell and SMEs who digitalized their businesses to everyday casual users who sold and gave away unused items for free.

The Caroupreneur Awards, first launched in Singapore last year, recognizes a wide variety of outstanding achievements of Carousellers over the past challenging year, ranging from entrepreneurs who started or scaled their businesses online, to brick-and-mortar retailers who digitalized their businesses, and everyday casual sellers who want to declutter and supplement their income.

The judging panel, made up of Marcus Tan, Co-founder of Carousell, Djon Nacario, General Manager of Carousell Philippines and Vishal Salunkhe, Vice President of Seller Success Operations, Carousell, assessed shortlisted sellers identified from their performance from 1 January to 31 December 2021 together with a mix of qualitative and quantitative criteria, such as quality of listings, reviews, creativity and brand story.

“We are incredibly proud of what our Filipino users have accomplished on Carousell over the past year. With Carousell’s services and capabilities, our winners and finalists have found a way to nurture their entrepreneurial spirit with just snap, list and sell.

Their success is proof that Carousell is more than just a transactional platform, but one where sellers and buyers can find shared possibilities to achieve their aspirations. Through the Caroupreneur Award, Carousell celebrates 10 years by showing our support to the next generation of entrepreneurs and recognizing the best of Carousell sellers,” said Djon Nacario, General Manager of Carousell Philippines.

Supporting local entrepreneurship during the pandemic

For Katherine Mae A. Cipriano selling on Carousell is one of the best decisions she’s made as an entrepreneur. “Being on Carouse made selling so much easier and organized for me.  It has helped me grow my business and sustain my business  which is  selling gadgets and electronics, for many years now, even during the pandemic. Thank you, Carousell!”  said Katherine Mae A. Cipriano of @TekiCashGadgetsph who won the Caroupreneur Award of the Year for Best in Carousell: Electronics.

Meanwhile, access to a bigger market on Carousell is one of reasons Noel Maralit of  @Turnintocash prefers selling on Carousell. Noel won Best in Carousell: Furniture and Home Living. “I started here when Carousell acquired OLX. My wife and I are into buying and selling of preowned - used or new home furniture and decor. Carousell gave us more buyers nationwide. For me, Carousell is one of the most reliable online marketplaces here in the Philippines.”

Nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs

Launched earlier in August, #StartonCarousell is Carousell’s first-ever entrepreneurship program catered to Gen Z (18–24-year-olds) across the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia to help aspiring entrepreneurs bring their business to life. Inspired by the real stories from Carousellers and their aspiration for financial freedom, this program aims to provide the tools they need to get started, such as training by the Carousell team to use our tools to amplify their business, and guidance by established mentors through a panel discussion and coffee chats with selected entrepreneurs. Interested applicants can sign up by 7 September here

Ox Street has joined the Carousell Group

There’s no doubt that Filipinos have an enduring love affair with sneakers. We love sports. We are also consumed by fashion, and sneakers are the junction where these two passions connect.  In fact, according to a recent report by Carousell, the leading classified ads platform in the country, the Philippines is among the top three countries in the Asia Pacific region with the highest interest in sneakers.

This is why the news that Ox Street, one of the fastest-growing end-to-end marketplaces for authenticated sneakers and streetwear in the region, has joined the Carousell Group, and is expanding its presence in the Philippines is such a welcome development for Filipino sneakerheads.

With this exciting news, local sneaker fans now have a legit and truly reliable platform where they can resell or buy quality sneakers. With Ox Street, users are assured of the security and authenticity of sneakers that they will buy or sell, especially for those rare designs and styles.

The booming sneaker resale market

The expansion of Ox Street to the Philippines and across the Asia Pacific region is also a reflection of the booming resale market for sneakers. In Ox Street, 80% of sneakerheads said that they have tried to buy sneakers on the resale market.   And users are willing to shell out cash to get hold of hard-to-find styles - be it a pair of Air Jordan, Nike Dunks, or Yeezy. In fact, the most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold on Ox Street was the Dior x Air Jordan 1 High which was sold for an estimated amount of USD7,500.

 Guaranteed authentic

The Ox Street team inspects and authenticates every pair of sneakers before it reaches buyers. With Ox Street's strong domain of expertise in the streetwear industry, this will give customers the assurance that the items listed on the platform are legit and authentic, and will protect Filipino sneakerheads against fraudulent online sellers.

“We are looking forward to creating more innovation and reaching more buyers and sellers as we build a trusted platform for buying and selling the best limited-edition sneakers," said Ox Street founder and CEO Gijs Verheijke.

Reaching out to Pinoy sneakerheads

With its growing popularity in the local streetwear culture, Ox Street is indeed the newest playground for local sneakerheads whose growth is driven by “millennial and Gen Z Filipinos starting to earn more, and spending some of their earnings on getting the sneakers they have always wanted,” adds Gijs.

High up on the agenda for the Philippines is reaching out to local users. Ox Street Philippines Marketing Manager Jasper Delegencia has been reaching out to Filipino users for feedback. “We’re taking part in relevant events and gatherings. We are also partnering with various local brands to help small Filipino businesses.”

Shared values

Carousell co-founder and CEO Quek Siu Rui shared that the Ox Street and Carousell partnership is fueled by both company’s common values of being a user-first platform and building communities. This is evident in the brand love that Ox Street has created amongst their dedicated community of sneakerheads and fashion enthusiasts, especially amongst Gen Z consumers.

The partnership also reflects both Ox Street and Carousell's deep commitment to reimagining the online classified ads experience with a focus on trust, convenience, and to make secondhand the first choice.

Carousell report finds Philippines most receptive to secondhand in the region

The Philippines is the most receptive market for secondhand goods in the Greater Southeast Asian region. This is one of the findings in the inaugural Carousell Recommerce Index (2021 report), a Carousell Green initiative that highlights the importance of sustainability and recommerce in the region. The report is part of several programs organized by Carousell Group, the leading classifieds group in Greater Southeast Asia, to help address the issue of overconsumption and covers findings from four Carousell Group brands namely Carousell, Cho Tot, Mudah.my and OneKyat, across eight markets - Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam, involving over 3,000 buyers and sellers.

Recommerce refers to the selling and buying of previously-owned products, including both new and used in condition. In the Philippines, 92% of consumers responded that they’ve bought secondhand items including unused and brand-new items by casual everyday sellers. This is the highest among all Carousell Group markets. It was shown that 58% percent of Filipino online consumers are most comfortable buying secondhand apparel, while 75% of Filipino merchants choose to sell secondhand apparel.

When it comes to buying secondhand items, 74% of Filipino consumers prefer purchasing secondhand items due to their affordable price, while 72% of consumers who have never bought a secondhand item said that having authentication and warranty of products will motivate them to buy secondhand items.

Regionally, consumers had an estimated 102,556 unwanted items at home that could be sold. The Philippines is one of the markets that had the most users forecasting 100 unwanted items to sell, and tied with Hong Kong in third place for the highest average items per user at 43 unwanted items. While most consumers estimated earning between PHP 2,501 to PHP 5,000 for selling their unwanted items, 11% believed they could earn more than PHP 35,0000.

Overall, the study revealed that while Women’s Fashion has held a steady position at the top category for secondhand items on Carousell Philippines, Men’s Fashion and Hobbies & Toys climbed the charts in 2020 to be in second and third place respectively. T-Shirts & Polo Shirts saw the most interest for Men’s Fashion, while the demand for Children’s Books was the highest in Hobbies & Toys. The top categories for supply are similar, with secondhand cars breaking out into third place. Listing views for used cars rose by 37% during the pandemic.

“Recommerce offers the second-best sustainable option by extending the life cycle of each garment and material, keeping it out of landfills, and replacing the need to produce new items, and limiting consumption,” said Ralph Garcia, Country MarketingHead, Carousell Philippines. “Since the pandemic drastically changed consumer behavior in the past months, we came up with  the Carousell Recommerce Index to find out  where we are now, and what we can do to encourage Filipinos to consider buying  secondhand as their first choice to promote a circular economy and encourage them to practice a  more sustainable lifestyle “

Despite the growing support for recommerce across the regions, there are still buyers who are hesitant to purchase secondhand items because they find it difficult to ascertain the quality of a product. In the autos category in Carousell Philippines, this has been circumvented with the launch of Carousell Autos “Inspected” feature which is available to all buyers for free to provide them with confidence and peace of mind when searching for vehicles in the Carousell platform. Carousell will continue to be a gateway for anyone to contribute to the circular economy, encouraging consumers to take their first steps towards more sustainable lifestyles.

Lucas Ngoo, Co-founder, Carousell Group said, “As a pioneer for mobile classifieds in the region, Carousell Group has been constantly working to remove friction and enable secure, seamless transactions. With the use of AI and data, we have been focused on accelerating our recommerce leadership in the region to make buying secondhand trusted and convenient. This, in turn, will help to solve the meaningful problem of overconsumption with recommerce and thus make secondhand the first choice for consumers.”

The Quarantine Effect: The Average Filipino Earned ₱55,000 on Carousell

A new user behaviour study conducted by Carousell, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing classifieds, shows that Filipinos largely adapted to the lockdowns around the country by making the best of what they have, through selling and buying. During the lockdown period, the average Filipino made ₱55,000, selling on Carousell

Selling second hand with hugot
Filipinos made more than 450,000 transactions for second hand items to earn extra money. For many, this was to save for rainy days, supplement income, or even to cushion the blow of losing a job during the pandemic. Carousell user Jhocen, who was forced to pause her full-time work and sold her preloved and vintage items on Carousell to keep her afloat, earned over ₱10,000 on Carousell during quarantine.

But many others sold their items with a different purpose in mind. Carousell user Ashley decided to start an initiative with a few of her friends, to raise funds for those who lost their sources of income during the quarantine. “During lent season, I wanted to be more proactive in fundraising for those affected by the quarantine and decided to sell my items and donate 100% of the proceeds,” said Ashley.

Similarly, Gabbi listed her secondhand clothes to raise funds as she “wanted to help daily wage earners and local businesses”. The quarantine period prompted her to notice how important everyday frontliners such as “Kuya” couriers were, how difficult their situation was, and how many still needed help with their jobs being cut.

Yet, even with this rise in conscious resourcefulness, there is still a lot more value to be unlocked in selling underused items. On Carousell’s marketplace alone, Filipinos could be selling an additional ₱3.8 billion worth of second hand items.

Love for food
Second hand marketplaces have quickly become a top of mind destination for certain items like women’s fashion and electronics, two of Carousell’s historically popular categories. But during the quarantine period, another popular category emerged.

Food and beverages businesses affected by the quarantine took to Carousell to continue selling their homemade delights, using the newly-launched Local F&B category, where users are able to search within a 10km radius of their location to narrow down the food nearest to them. It's no secret that Filipinos love their food—during the quarantine period alone, chats for items in the F&B segment alone increased by 188%. Filipinos were both selling their homemade goods on Carousell and using it to source for their cooking and baking needs too, right down to the nitty gritty of equipment such as whisks, which more than doubled in demand.

Carousell Stories
Raffy Montemayor, General Manager, Carousell Philippines said “We are one with our market partners and communities in the Southeast Asian region in working towards fighting this pandemic and restoring our respective economic lives and well-being. The country lockdowns brought about by our efforts in flattening the curve of the virus spread have shown the need to remain interconnected whilst apart. We are proud to be part of facilitating these vital commercial flows of buying and selling that are crucial in these difficult times. It is inspiring to see such great entrepreneurial drive mirrored in the stories of our users, and we want to ensure that our platform continues to empower them and allow their businesses to thrive. We wish to remain their reliable and trusted partner in our common journey to remake a better world for all beyond this crisis.”

To celebrate and share the stories of Carousellers who have exemplified true grit and resourcefulness, Carousell has launched a #MakingTheBest campaign that will roll out over the next few months. For more Carousell stories, visit press.carousell.com

Carousell, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing online classifieds, has partnered with Unilever Food Solutions in providing the local food and beverage (F&B) community the opportunity to continue business operations online. As the threats of COVID-19 force people to observe social distancing and movement restrictions, the online marketplace breathes life into F&B businesses.

The launch of the new “Food & Drinks” category offers local eats, special promotions and increased visibility to the platform’s millions of users. It also intends to connect diners to a wide array of food choices offering self-arranged delivery and pick-ups.

“Our love for food and eating is unquestionable. Food brings a sense of comfort, of belonging and excitement. We give utmost importance to strengthening our community and we know that the Filipinos’ shared love for food will connect us better. As we go through these trying times, we continuously find ways to innovate and bridge entrepreneurs and consumers through our platform’s newest food & drinks category. We support local F&B owners while they reinvent themselves online and thrive despite the current economic challenge,” shared Raffy Montemayor, General Manager, Carousell Philippines.

“Small local business owners like us find difficulty in sustaining our businesses. Though the government has provided avenues for financial aid, not all are eligible. Due to the quarantine measures, diners can't eat out or visit our food stalls. As consumers shift from dine-in to food take-outs and deliveries, we look for ways to pivot operations that cater to the demands of a digitally-driven world. Carousell’s efforts to provide a marketplace that can accommodate our needs to reach a wider range of potential customers has been a great help to us,” said Jeff Uy from 24 Chicken (@24ChickenPH).

The onboarding process will ensure that business owners who have not had prior experience with online operations are still able to list on Carousell for increased visibility. With Carousell listings, F&B owners will be able to provide on-demand takeaway services without having to pay a premium or commission to external vendors, and Carousellers will be able to conveniently and directly support the local F&B establishments near them. Interested F&B outlets may list on Carousell following these simple guidelines:https://carousell.app.link/SupportLocalEats

We are pleased to partner with Carousell and provide F&B businesses a platform to reach more diners, without added costs. This partnership shows our effort to help operators create new revenue streams in a digital and online environment. While the situation remains tough, we believe the F&B industry can persevere and emerge stronger together. Sama-sama, tulong-tulong.” said BJ Carreon, Managing Director, Unilever Food Solutions, Philippines and Vietnam.
