The Mango Tree supports locally grown produce and promotes sustainability

The Mango Tree brand entered the Philippine in 2010 with Mango Tree Bistro and Mango Tree restaurant. And recently with the new Mango Tree Cafe concept as a more casual dining option. Today, there are 9 restaurants under Mango Tree’s belt in the country.

To celebrate its 12th year in the Philippines, Mango Tree partnered with local farmers as a way to support locally grown produce and promote sustainability. This would benefit farmers to earn more and fend for their families.

With a global presence of over 50 restaurants across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, Mango Tree has delighted diners worldwide with its unique take on Thai culinary traditions. The very first Mango Tree opened over 25 years ago in Thailand and was named and inspired by a solitary 100-year old ma-muang (‘mango tree’) that still grows in an old house in Bangkok’s Suriwong district to this day.

A passion for Thai cuisine, carefully curated designs, and a penchant for constant innovation have become the DNA of a brand that has branched out into various concepts without losing its identity. With an increasing interest in sustainability and environmentally friendly practices, consumers have shifted their behavior to supporting locally made products. Mango Tree strives to create extraordinary meals from the simplest of ingredients, and in adopting a farm-to-table concept, crops will be directly sourced from local farms as much as possible—making local produce more accessible and enjoyed by our customers.

During the pandemic, The Quezon City government launched the Joy of Urban Farming project which was created to mitigate hunger and encourage livelihood in agriculture. This initiative also aims to further promote the importance of urban farming and empower the livelihood of urban dwellers by producing fresh and healthy vegetable crops. One of the farms under this project is the New Greenland Farm.

Situated in Barangay Bagong Silangan in Quezon City, New Greenland Farm started out as a 2-hectare area and has expanded to over 10-hectares of cultivated land with the support of local communities and the local government which envisions transforming over 30 hectares of unused land into agricultural gardens to address food security for all citizens. These farms are expected to produce over 756 metric tons of vegetables including eggplant, string beans, pechay, mustasa, squash, kamote tops, spinach, okra, and many more seasonal crops every year.

Mango Tree’s executive Thai chefs flew in from Thailand to visit New Greenland Farm and curated a special menu using freshly harvested crops and local produce. This menu highlights the versatility and adaptability of local healthy vegetables such as chayote (‘sayote’), Malabar spinach (‘alugbati’), jute leaves (‘saluyot’), and more.

Mango Tree launches "Flavors of Thailand" with Mango Tree CEO, Chef Pitaya Phanphensophon

Mango Tree CEO, Chef Pitaya Phanphensophon presents the "Flavors of Thailand" from the four regions of Thailand,  with his 5 new dishes at Mango Tree BGC on March 20.

Mango Tree CEO, Chef Pitaya Phanphensophon

The highlight dishes are  Kanom-Jeen Nam Ngiaw, a rice noodle creation originating from the ethnic Shan community made with garlic, red curry paste, yellow bean sauce, diced tomatoes, turmeric, fish sauce, spring onion and coriander; slow-cooked with either chicken or pork ribs.

Sai Oua or northern Thai sausage will also be among the offerings. Made from pork mince, the dish is infused with herbs and spices and freshly pounded curry paste creating an ultimate finger-friendly snack served either hot or cold.

Krapaw Bacon is a Mango Tree innovation from central Thailand, taking one of the best loved spicy dishes and turning it into a lighter and healthier snack by removing the boiled rice and eating with lettuce.

Then there’s Moo Ping, pork marinated in sweet soy-based sauce and grilled on charcoal stove, a unique dish that showcases all the signature Thai flavours: sweet, sour and spicy from the north eastern region know for the origins of Som Tam. Chef Pitaya’s recipe reaches beyond the original by using onzen eggs instead of fried hard boiled eggs for a fun, healthy, delicious taste experience.

Flavours of Thailand”, showcasing the five dishes from the four regions of Thailand, will be launched on May 1, providing diners with the opportunity to taste genuine Thai cuisine and introduce to the market dishes that are less well known, but no less exceptional culinary experiences.

“In many ways we have taken one step back as we look forward,” added Mr MacKenzie. “We have rediscovered many of the well known dishes in Thailand and reimagined them through creative design and presentation while remaining true to the original ingredients.”

Thai restaurant operator, cultural ambassador and culinary innovator Mango Tree Worldwide has announced an ambitious programme of expansion on its fifth anniversary that will significantly extend its branded restaurants and cafés in the Philippines by 2020.

The growth in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest growing economies will for the first time reach outside of the capital into secondary urban and key tourism destinations as Mango Tree embarks on a round of “discovery” research to plan for the second phase of the group’s development plan in the Philippines.

The growth strategy will also see the re-styling of not only restaurants in Manila but throughout the world as Mango Tree Worldwide Managing Director Trevor MacKenzie used the occasion in the Philippine capital as the launch pad for his announcement that will ultimately cover all 70 outlets in the group.

“Our customers here are among the most sophisticated in Asia,” he said. “Diners in Manila are very discerning not only in their taste for Thai food but in their demands for style in presentation and experience in our restaurants.”
“We will be piloting a range of interior renovations that will infuse a new attitude, focusing on a blend of millennial-driven modern Thai lifestyle with a celebration of originality and creativity that encapsulates our evolving vision of style, simplicity and living history. It is an exciting project and one which will offer a reinvigorated platform for the accelerated growth of the brand.”

Mango Tree Worldwide will also celebrate its anniversary in Manila by working with Ms. Suzanna Pavadee Vicheinrut Yuzon, former Miss Thailand and President of Miss Possibilities Foundation – a non- government, non-profit organization which supports children with special needs. The brand will host a special charity dinner in which the children will entertain guests with a special performance. A donation will be made by Mango Tree and its franchise partners Mother Spice Food Corporation as a part of an ongoing commitment to Miss Possibilities Foundation.

Mango Tree currently operates its flagship Mango Tree Restaurant in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), plus two Mango Tree Bistros, one in Trinoma, Quezon City and the other in Green Belt 5 in Makati.

Celebrate Thai Street Food Festival at Mango Tree Bistro

Whenever I go abroad part of my itinerary is to make sure I try their famous street food like the Shawarma in Iran, Palafel and Hummus in Abu Dhabi and Takoyaki in  Hongkong.

THAILAND has always been one of my dream destinations as their cuisine is said to be among the worlds best.

If there is anything that Thailand knows best, it is definitely their street food. This has been proven over the years with their reputation as an internationally known destination for street food and their annual Songkran Festival.

But finding time to sched a trip has been busy thankfully you dont have  to book a flight to Thailand to taste their awesome streetfood...  All you have to do is drop by at any Mango Tree Bistro. And check out Tom Yum Chicken Poppers, Salmon Skin Crisps (Chicharon), Tom Yum Fries and Pork Dynamite, and their Halo Halo prepared by Chef  Prapun Sampungpong or Chef Tum.

Mango Tree launched Thai Street Food Festival last April 19 together with Chef Tum.

Chef Prapun Sampungpong or Chef Tum prepared an interesting line-up of dishes and street food favorites from across Thailand. These includes Tom Yum Chicken Poppers, Salmon Skin Crisps (Chicharon), Tom Yum Fries and Pork Dynamite, and my favorite Halo Halo.

The first Thai food that was served was the appetizer Mango Salad, it is salty sweet and spicy, good enough to start up a meal, it has become my instant favorite at the moment.

Mango Salad

Their Pork Dynamite is crunchy, spicy and tasty, best to pair with Singha beer.
Pork Dynamite

Salmon Skin Chicharon

Salmon Chicharon is salmon skin with  lemon grass and garlic aioli, it is crunchy and a bit salty, best to partner with their personal dip.

And to celebrate this authenticity, Mango Tree and Mango Tree Bistro are holding a Thai Street Food Festival from April 20 until May 15 to offer diners a symphony of visual delight and an explosion of unique, gastronomic flavors and spices.

Chef Prapun Sampungpong or Chef Tum for short, the new executive chef on board, has meticulously designed an interesting line-up of dishes and street food favorites from across Thailand. These will include items such as Tom Yum Chicken Poppers, Salmon Skin Crisps (Chicharon), Tom Yum Fries and Pork Dynamite, among others. The festival selection promises to be a culinary experience worth coming back for, to be enjoyed by many. Other items to look forward to include the Pla Meuk Thod or Fried Squid Rings; the Goong Phad Wonsen or Stir-fried Glass Noodles with Shrimps; and the Larb Pla Meuk or Spicy Squid Salad. And definitely not to be missed is the Thai style halo-halo!

Singha Beer
