DIABETES AND ITS COMPLICATIONS

Diabetes mellitus (DM), or more commonly known as diabetes, refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood glucose, commonly called blood sugar. Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues.

Diabetes is a worldwide public health problem.2In 2013, the number of diabetic adults reached a total of 380 million and currently, they are estimating that in 2035, the number will rise to over 592 million.

Diabetes in the Philippines

Diabetes in the Philippines is a growing health problem affecting the lives of 9.7% of the adult population in 2012. This number tends to double if we add the 12.5% of Filipinos at-risk of diabetes with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Combined, 1 out of every 5 Filipino adults or an estimated 11 million has either prediabetes or diabetes.

Filipinos are considered members of a high-risk ethnic population and this is for the reason that the Filipino diet is accustomed to high levels of sugar content. The data shouldn't come as a surprise for a carbohydrate-loading nation, whose staple meals include rice, bread, sweet potato, corn and other sugary food.

The Department of Health posted diabetes as the 8th top cause of disease-related death in the countryin 2009.6 Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death accounting for approximately half of all diabetes fatalities.

According to the World Health Organization, a substantial proportion of newly referred cases of diabetes already have evidence of the micro-vascular complications of diabetes.7 Screening of newly-diagnosed diabetic patients in Manila demonstrated a high prevalence of diabetic complications and cardiovascular risk factors.2 WHO recommends that a screening program to detect diabetes and even pre-diabetes must be instituted.

Complications of Diabetes

Diabetes has often been diagnosed in conjunction with, and worsens other comorbid conditions such as such as coronary artery and peripheral vascular disease, stroke, diabetic neuropathy, amputations, renal failure and blindness and leads to increased disability, reduced life expectancy and enormous health costs worldwide.2

Diabetes does not only affect one’s blood health,it may also affectother body parts:

Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD). Diabetes can cause a heart problem which is the number one cause of death in the Philippines according to the Department of Health-Health Intelligence Service.6People with diabetes have a higher-than-average risk of having a heart attack or stroke. These strike people with diabetes more than twice as often as people without diabetes. There’s a big link between diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. In fact, two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke, also called cardiovascular disease.

Eye Complications. This disease is the leading cause of vision loss in adults of working age. 14% of people with diabetes have diabetic macular edema while 25% of people with diabetic macular edema will develop moderate vision loss.

Kidney Disease (Nephropathy).Kidney disease occurs in approximately one third of diabetics. Kidney failure typically occurs after 20-30 years of diabetes and diabetes has become the most frequent condition in people with kidney failure.

Nerve Damage (Neuropathy). Nerve damage from diabetes is called diabetic neuropathy. About half of all people with diabetes have some form of nerve damage. It is more common in those who have had the disease for a number of years and can lead to many kinds of problems.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Caused when your blood moves through your vessels with too much force. Your heart has to work harder when blood pressure is high, and your risk for heart disease and diabetes goes up. High blood pressure raises your risk for heart attack, stroke, eye problems and kidney disease.

Skin Complications. Some of these problems are skin conditions anyone can have, but people with diabetes get it easier. These include bacterial infections, fungal infections, and itching. Other skin problems happen mostly or only to people with diabetes.

Treatment of Diabetes and its Complications in the Philippines

Once complications have been documented, treating hyperglycemia alone will not suffice. Complications from diabetes can be prevented only up to a certain point, beyond which these will progress.

Beyond screening, education of our high risk population regarding diabetic complications must be started also to encourage earlier medical consultation. Medical stakeholders must be encouraged to formulate new guidelines and encourage physicians to be more vigilant in diagnosing and managing diabetic Filipinos.2

If left untreated, diabetes may cause serious complications, as above mentioned.

Making Friends with "The Other Woman"

KATE UPTON IN HER FIRST MAJOR FILM ROLE IN “THE OTHER WOMAN”

Kate Upton, one of the world’s most sought supermodel/endorser debuts in her first major film role in the hilarious romantic comedy “The Other Woman” starring alongside Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann.

An unconventional friendship begins between three unsuspecting women as they cross roads when the man of their dreams gets exposed as a three-timing liar.  Carly (Diaz), a stunning lawyer from New York suddenly appears on Mark’s (NIkolaj Coster-Waldau) doorstep to surprise him, but when the door opened and she was greeted by a sweet-suburban woman named Kate (Mann), who is actually Mark’s wife, Carly’s world suddenly turned upside down.  She can’t believe that Mark made her the other woman all along!  The two women don’t appear to have much in common, other than the philandering womanizer who has been tricking both of them. They become great pals, however, and decide to teach the lying Mark a few lessons to prove that cheating will not work. But their journey goes way beyond straightforward revenge. Infidelity may have led to hurt and upset, but they don’t let it destroy their lives. Far from it.

Everything becomes more complicated when Carly and Kate find out that the charming cheat has been engaging in yet another affair, with the beautiful Amber (Kate Upton) who is half his age.  Kate Upton plays the naïve Amber, a classic blonde bombshell who innocently believes she has found true love with her handsome and highly successful boyfriend, Mark, until she discovers that he has been deceiving her.

For the role of Amber, the third woman deceived by Mark, producer Julie Yorn considered a number of actresses, but in securing Kate Upton, the producer ended up where she started.  Yorn explains: “Initially, we used Kate as the loose prototype of the character, never thinking we were actually going to get her.  But she came in and she was just so disarming.  The key to that role was that you have to hate her when you first see her, at least a little bit, and then love her when you get to know her.  She fits the bill so well for both of those situations.”   Likewise, screenwriter Melissa Stack marveled at the similarities between the character Amber and Kate Upton the person.  “Kate is such a bombshell but she’s very sweet,” says the screenwriter.“Kate has this lightness and a kind way about her that is perfect for Amber. That was always who we all hoped Amber would be.”

Upton enjoyed her first major acting role under the tutelage of Diaz and Mann.  “I am so lucky to have one of my first movies to be with Leslie and Cameron,” she says.  “They’re so inspiring.”

As the youngest of the trio, fashion designer icon Patricia Field along with her longtime collaborator and protégé Paolo Nieddu says of Kate’s Amber,  “She’s the cool girl,” says Nieddu.  “Amber’s style is a young style. Her most memorable wardrobe moment is when Carly and Kate spot Amber on a sunny Hamptons beach, jogging in a perfect white bikini made by Malia Mills.Amber is your jeans-and-t-shirt, all-American girl-next-door.  She’s kind of a tomboy at times.  Amber shouldn’t be over-styled or overdone.  She’s not out on the prowl.”

Upton, an American actress and supermodel also did cameos in the films “The Three Stooges” and “Tower Heist.”   As one of the most in-demand supermodels, Upton has broken boundaries in the fashion world, gracing the covers of the industry’s leading international publications including VOGUE US, VOGUE UK, VOGUE Italy, VOGUE Brazil, ELLE US, GQ US, as well as being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition two years in a row. Kate was most recently the cover subject of the 100th Anniversary issue of Vanity Fair.   An avid horseback rider, she showed for the American Paint Horse Association and competed on a national level.

The Other Woman” opens May 7 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Star Wars Get a Refresher from Mamang Sorbetero

MAMANG SORBETERO MEETS "STAR WARS" CHARACTERS!

Not even R2D2 and the Stormtroopers are immune from the summer heat. The characters from the beloved “Star Wars” universe get a much-needed refresher from Mamang Sorbetero himself, who after the initial shock of seeing the inter-galactic creatures, is just too happy to sell them “dirty” ice cream: the iconic Pinoy summer treat.

The public sighting of R2D2 and the Troopers coincided with the celebration of May the 4th which is considered Star Wars Day by fans of the franchise all over the world.

Locally, the “holiday” is spearheaded by The Philippine Outpost of the 501st Legion, an international organization of Star Wars fans who dress up as the bad guys from a galaxy far, far away.

Known as the Bad Guys Who Do Good, members of the 501st wear their costumes at events in order to raise funds for charity, especially children's causes. (Photo by Paulo Vecina)

Delightful-E equipped Homes with Electrolux

Just thinking about my "tatay's" kitchen brings me back to my childhood. That smell of his soy squid with white wine and the recipe's he learned from his former boss-- and the times when I would hide hotdogs in my pockets everytime he cooked spaghetti (we were banned from eating anything with preservatives/processed meat back then) .

Not to be outdone, nanay would prepare her version of Mechado with coconut milk, which has become staple of every celebration--or by special request.

That was a time when life was less stressful, simpler and happier.

Electrolux seeks to bring back those happy moments of today, not only in the kitchen but throughout the entire house as it launches its Delightful-E campaign during a  "housewarming" party held at its new office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Delightful-E Yummy brings the delight back in everyday home activities with the family. These bonding moments become an avenue for enriching the culinary experience of food preparation and sharing meals with the family.

“Electrolux believes that the kitchen is the heart of the home,” shares Andrea Pionilla, Marketing Manager, Electrolux Philippines, Inc. “Delightful-E Yummy capitalizes on the simple yet most treasured family moments spent inside the kitchen as well as the stories that come with it.”

The event featured a cooking show with a twist wherein Electrolux brand endorsers—  celebrity chefs Chef Rosebud Benitez, Chef Bruce Lim, Chezka Kramer and daughter Kendra and mompreneur Janice Villanueva—shared family recipes that have touched their lives.

Delamar hosted the event with Electrolux endorsers Chef Bruce Lim and Janice Crisostomo-Villanueva.

To personify the campaign, Electrolux introduced its newest set of brand endorsers who best represent and embody what Delightful-E Yummy aims to promote.

“With everything I am juggling, sometimes it’s tough to find time to bond with my family,” shares Janice Crisostomo-Villanueva. Janice is the founder of Mommy Mundo, a family-focused online portal comprised of an active community of over 30,000 women.“This is why I enjoy weekends when there are less things to attend to. I spend more time in the kitchen baking and preparing our family’s favorite dishes—sometimes my children stay and watch, and learn how to do the recipes as well.”

“The best thing about being an Electrolux brand endorser is that I am able to promote strong family ties with the brand,” says Cheska Kramer, a celebrity mom of three and wife to basketball star, Doug Kramer.“Doing simple chores with the family becomes bonding moments with the help of Electrolux home appliances.”

Having a newborn baby in the house is a big joy to us,” says Chef Rosebud Benitez-Velasco, who recently gave birth to her baby, Kaeden. “But now I have less time for cooking and doing household chores. I love having Electrolux products because they are reliable and easy to use. Having these as my assistants in the kitchen and around the house really cut down the list of things I need to worry about.”

Chef Bruce Lim shares, “I am proud to be working with Electrolux, a brand that puts importance to the value of family. The Perfect Pint: The Best Craft Beer in Town

The Perfect Pint: A Beer Revolution

I have yet to try a special kind of beer to be a fan, I am a wine person, so when I was invited to try what The Perfect Pint at Crossroads, BGC could offer  I said yes right away. We were served Katipunan or Indio Pale ale for you which has a sweet floral aroma and this distinct taste that would want you to savor the flavor, it is best served with their signature dish Heap of Bacon, it compliments the taste of this Indio Pale.  I also tried the Fat Pauly's ale, which has a faint sweetness and a balance of bitterness. One pint for me is more than enough.  To all the beer lovers,  this is the place to go, just try and let the taste speak itself.  The perfect pint is about enjoying what's in the glass. They also serve Irish Reda, Pivo Weisen, Pivo Dark, Pivo Classic, Wild Ride, Liberation and Fat Pauly's. And guess what I think Im developing a passion for craft beer.

A new gastro pub has opened in Bonifacio Global City, offering a revolution of sorts with a craft beer movement that’s out to shake things up in the Metro.

The Perfect Pint: Craft Beer + Fine Food, a concept developed by the Tempongko brothers: Alec, Noel Jr. and Raymond, is out to change the perception of beers in Manila.  This venture sought out by the three brothers is a little more than an attempt to make every man’s dream come true of owning his own bar.   It’s also a call to change the bar experience here in the Philippines.

The Perfect Pint does not serve local commercial beer. Instead, The Perfect Pint only offers craft beer, mostly of which are brewed locally by fellow Filipino-owned independent breweries.  Local beers from Katipunan Craft Ales, Craftpoint Brewing Company, Pivo Praha Corporation, G Point and Fat Pauly’s will be available on tap and bottles.

The Perfect Pint has sought out the help of highly-acclaimed Chef Gene Gonzalez and his team, to create menu items which paired perfectly with the different types of craft beers.  Some of the mouth- watering pairings include Truffle Fries with Czech Weizen, Kapal Muks with Pale Ale, Liver-wrapped bacon with Dark lager, Smoked Angus Tapa with Egg with Pale Ale and Stinky Pizza with Weizen. Even their dessert, freshly-baked caramel smores are paired with dark pilsen.

\Whether the aim is to a refreshing change in the beer landscape in the Philippines, support Filipino brewed craft beer or just plain offer a “notch higher” experience, it seems that The Perfect Pint is on its way to carving its own notch in the local scene.  A hand-painted sign on their wooden walls captures it all: “Savor the Flavor”.

The Perfect Pint is located at 2nd Floor CrossRoads Building, 32nd Ave. Bonifacio Global City, Taguig
