KA TUNYING’S CAFÉ partners with The Bistro Group for a new take on Pinoy comfort food

I discovered Ka Tunying's cafe due to a blogging event this year. I have been there twice.   Its always a favorite venue for an event or product launch because of their famous pinoy food with a twist.  My personal favorite from their menu is is the thick and creamy champorado with tuyo flakes partner with Hot Tsokolate Ala Eh. This reminds me so much of home and childhood. Their coffee bun and ensaymada is also a must-try from their bread products.

I recently got an invite to witness their partnership with The Bistro Group. There, I got to try their best seller dishes from appetizer, mains and dessert. I would recommend the Arroz Ala Tunying,  my comfort food. Its perfectly hot and savory garnished with chicken and egg.   Perfect for the rainy weather.  I can have this anytime of the day though. Next is their new dish crispy and tasty Bruce Tawilis, just order a cup of rice for a complete meal.

To stay competitive in the food business, Ka Tunying's Cafe recently partners with The Bistro Group of Restaurants, on June 29 (the same company that operates popular casual dining restaurants such as TGIFridays, Italiannis, Denny’s, Texas Roadhouse and Buffalo Wild Wings, among others.) The event was attended by Ka Tunying and wife Rossel, and The Bistro Group of Restaurants executives.

KA TUNYING’S CAFÉ, whose owner/founder are Filipino broadcast journalist and radio commentator Anthony “Ka Tunying” Taberna and his wife, Rossel, is one of those places that has been a part family bondings, barkada get-togethers, office lunches and after-work dinners. And while many are drawn to its menu of local favorites, the restaurant has strived to evolve with the times by introducing innovative spins to traditional Filipino food.

Food trail: From Nueva Ecija to Manila
Anthony Taberna, grew up in Nueva Ecija where the Taberna family owned and ran a local panaderya called “Ka Tunying’s Tinapay, Kape, at Iba Pa” (which later became “Tunying’s Bread”).

Named after his father, Antonio Taberna, Sr. (the original Ka Tunying), the bakeshop somewhat became a town destination over the years. Some of its customers even brought their signature crinkles and Spanish bread as baon and pasalubong when travelling to Manila. These breads soon found their way to supermarket fairs and pop-up bazaars around Metro Manila. It was only a matter of time then that customers clamored for a brick and mortar store in Metro Manila that would sell the scrumptious treats.

The growing demand for Tunying’s crinkles and bread gave the husband and wife team the push they needed to venture into the food business. Aside from baked products, Anthony and Rossel also thought of offering Filipino food we can’t live without.

“My wife is from Laguna and both of us love bread and home-cooked meals prepared by her Mommy Marilou and my Nanay Benny,” Tunying shared, waxing nostalgic.

So in 2015, Ka Tunying’s Café opened its doors on Visayas Avenue and debuted a complete menu offering from breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. The restaurant also introduced the Manila crowd  their unique coolers.

Soon after, Anthony and Rossel opened branches in Timog Avenue and at NAIA Terminal 3 to make it accessible to more people including balikbayans and OFWs craving for a taste of home.

Sikat Dito, Pinoy food with a twist: Dishes you should try

Staying true to its roots has always been part of the appeal of Ka Tunying’s Café, which has held on to its well-loved dishes in spite of the barrage of food trends.
There’s the bestseller Arroz Ala Tunying and Cabanatuan Longsilog with choices of recado, batutay and hamonado. The Umagang Kay Sarap dishes are available all-day with other must-try dishes like Tsamporado with Tuyo Flakes and Creamy Baked Bangus. Add a minimal amount for a cup of Ka Tunying’s Blend Coffee (P55) and Unlimited Rice (P35).

Dishes that people are coming back for (binabalik balikan) are called   Sikat Dito which include those with unique twists such as the creamy Tinapa Carbonara and  Ka-Love-Asa Lasagna.

Ka-Love-Asa Lasagna.

Ka Tunying’s Café also brought something from the province, foremost of which is Pancit Ni Nanay Benny, a family recipe developed by Ka Tunying’s mom.

Pancit Ni Nanay Benny,

Their breads remain to be popular, too and are baked fresh every day like the Kamote Cheesebread and Kalabasa Ensaymada among others.

Ka Tunying’s Café is a venue for social and corporate functions. In the Timog branch, for example, there are two function rooms that could each accommodate up to 20 persons for those who want a more private setting.

Partnering with Bistro
As Ka Tunying’s Café works to stay competitive in the food business with the objective of expanding the brand, the restaurant inked a partnership

“In collaboration with the Bistro Group, we have enhanced our bestselling dishes and breads while simultaneously introducing the new appetizer, mains, and desserts that will delight old and new guests, “the Tabernas said. “We are happy to be working with them in growing our brands.”

“The Bistro Group is excited about this partnership. We are working together to ensure that we maintain the same delectable Filipino comfort food that guests have grown accustomed to and at the same time give them something
new to look forward to every so often. Essentially, it’s still Ka Tunying’s Café, Pinoy comfort food with a twist stamped the signature Bistro brand of service,”
said Jean Paul Manuud, President and COO of The Bistro Group.

To mark this important milestone, Ka Tunying’s Café has also lined up new dishes such as Bruce Tawilis, Tinapang Lumangoy sa Monggo and Labo-Labo na Chopseuy. There are also Linamnam Meals (solo meals with 2 viands and rice) and Bakbakan Platter that is good for sharing.

Tips on how to choose the best portable power supply/power bank for your needs

Here are quick tips on how to choose the best portable power supply/power bank for your needs:

• First and most important is you need to know about the battery size and the charger specifications of your gadget, you can find it printed on the box. This is because you need a power bank that should have at least the same capacity of your device battery to ensure that your battery gets fully charged at least once with the power bank. If your phone frequently runs out of battery, get the highest mAh power bank that you can afford so that you have enough battery stored for emergencies.

Promate has power banks of different capacities such as the Tag-6 with 6000 mAh; Tag-9 with 9000 mAh; Zenith-10 and Polymax-10 both with 10000 mAh; Tag-15 with 15000 mAh; and the Promate ProVolta-21 with 20800 mAH

Tag-6 Black

For those who usually bring a smartphone and tablet, a 10000 mAh powerbank is a safe choice for a power bank just like the Promate VolTag-10. The Promate Voltag 10 lithium polymer power bank is lightweight and has ultra-fast USB charging ports that lets you charge two devices at the same time. The Automatic Voltage Regulation feature provides optimum output based on the device connected. It also comes in four colors black, white, pink, and light blue to complement your style or mood.

Those looking for a higher capacity power bank should be contented with the Promate ProVolta-21. This 20800 mAh power bank can charge up to 3 devices simultaneously and has a max 3.1A output and a fire proof ABS body

Now, if you are going for a more outdoor trip, say maybe mountain climbing or camping with small appliances, Promate has a MIGHTY solution. The Promate Mighty is indoor/outdoor Heavy-Duty Emergency Power Station with an unbeatable 60,000 mAH of power offering a one-stop solution for all your charging needs. The 200w inverter provides 230v AC mains power to run appliances such as TVs and laptops. It can fully charge laptops 3 times, or 20 full charges for smartphones.

Tag-15 Black

• Depending on the number of devices you carry, choose one that has several ports or cables so you could recharge more than one device at a time, saving you the trouble of having to wait for each one to finish.

The ProVolta-21 for example has several USB Ports with LED Flash so you can charge up to 3 devices simultaneously. The ProMate PolyMAX-Uni meanwhile includes replaceable Micro-USB and Type-C cables for Android gadgets as well as a Lighting Connector for your Apple device.

• With its costly price tag, you have to consider your gadgets as a valued investment so it’s best to get a power bank that comes with a power-cut power feature in the event of a short circuit. All ProMate power banks have automatic voltage regulation designed to protect your device from getting overcharged.

ProVolta-21
• Lastly, it is better to spend a little more on a power bank from a reputable brand to save you further costs. Get your Promate power banks from authorized sellers such as Silicon Valley, Lazada, National Bookstore, Abacus, Electroworld & Abenson to ensure that you are getting the genuine thing and be entitled to the full warranty.

“Promate thrives on creativity and we are devoted to finding a solution for all your digital entertainment and personal computing demands. Just like the rest of our lifestyle technology products, we are committed to strict quality control procedures to ensure that all our products are of the highest standards,” says Condes.

Orange Blush Salon’s Grand re-Launch At Franchise Asia Expo

Orange Blush Salon (OBS), the fast-growing salon chain, gears up as it relaunches its brand at the upcoming Franchise Asia Expo set on July 21-23 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

The grand re-launch takes place at Booth 207 of this year’s franchise expo, touted as the biggest in the country. Hundreds of franchising businesses participate in this much-anticipated event, as OBS re-launches with revamped franchise packages that should make it easier to own an outlet of your own thru installment plans in partnership with BDO.

“We are excited to announce that during the expo, we shall be holding a three-day sale with P50,000 off on our franchise fee,” said the brand’s maker Joby Linsangan-Moreno. “Our main objective is to find suitable and qualified franchisees who could be our partners in expanding Orange Blush.”

OBS is eyeing to approve at least 10 franchisees at the Expo.

At present, there are eight franchised OBS branches, with one in Lipa, Batangas opening soon. The flagship branch and main office is located at Spark Place Mall in P.Tuazon corner 10th Avenue in Cubao, Quezon City.

Best known as a rebonding center, OBS, which originated in Cabanatuan, is set to open 10 new branches within Metro Manila and in Metro South (Batangas and Antipolo). For interested franchisees, there will be pre-approved branches located inside community malls, in partnership with Waltermart, Citymall, Vista Malls, SM Savemore, SM City, and Robinsons Townville malls.

Joby shared her valuable thoughts on franchising, stating, “Franchising is actually borrowing and sharing the owner’s operations standards with a fee. It is operating within the regulations of the franchisor with proven business system and standards.”

She added, “Franchising is for those who are willing to follow and adapt to the culture of the franchisor and for those who would want to invest and grow the business with the franchisor by sharing the same vision and beliefs.”

OBS is fast-becoming a household brand, thanks to significant exposures it enjoys on shows like ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda, Magandang Buhay, and ASAP. It is at present the main hair and make-up sponsor for Banana Sundae.

Joby Linsangan-Moreno
The process of rebond, a permanent hair straightening procedure is the OBS brand’s strength, backed by a warranty service wherein customers availing the rebonding treatments are given warranty cards. In this set-up, clients are asked to return after a week for their hairs to be checked. If touchups are needed, OBS staff will do them free of charge.

A mild-mannered, hard worker who takes pride on her provincial roots, Joby further explained her vision for OBS: “Our goal is to become the top-of-mind hair salon in the country. We want people to think of Orange Blush Salon when they want to have their hair cut or rebonded. We want them to feel that at OBS, you are being cared for and that our customers are our highest priority. Our mission is to make our customers feel loved, happy, hopeful, and beautiful.”

Joby, a UST graduate who jumpstarted her salon business on a P30,000 shoestring budget, is now being handled by Asian Artist Agency.

“I have been attending workshops under the supervision of King of Talk Boy Abunda. I am truly honored for this golden opportunity to speak what’s on my mind and what’s in my heart, and to share my life and my stories to others.”

Those visiting the OBS booth at the Franchise Asia Expo SMX can expect some great vibes in the name of beauty and hope.

Try out Genki Sushi's new offerings at SM Aura branch

When you are craving for Sushi, maki, tempura, udon, kushi-age and matcha ice cream. There is this cute japanese resto in SM Aura called Genki Sushi. The place has this Japanese modern vibe all over. The price are easy on the budget plus the sushis are sooo good! You can even make your own hot green tea on the side.

The ordering system is automated. You just have to pinpoint your order on a touchscreen pad and wait for that cute little express train to arrive in 5 to 10 minutes. Ready your chopsticks! My personal favorite is their Deep Fried Salmon Skin and their Sushi sets.

In less than two years after the opening of its flagship branch in Bonifacio Stopover Global City, Genki Sushi continues its innovative Japanese dining experience with the opening of its 4th branch in SM Aura, Taguig City.

Highlighted by its speedy and convenient service with the Kousoku Express Train System, delectable dishes are within reach in only 5 to 10 minutes. This service is inspired by the Shinkansen bullet train, programmed to slow down upon reaching the diner’s table.

The Genki Super Supreme Sushi

Favorites such as the famous Chirashi Don, Seared Salmon with Black Pepper, Chicken Teriyaki Don, River Eel Rice Bowl, and various sushi choices remain and new menu items have likewise been introduced. There’s the tasty Kushi-Age, 5 different kinds of deep fried skewered meat and vegetable in special Japanese batter; Coconut Shrimps, deep fried shrimps in panko bread crumbs rolled in coconut flakes; Deep Fried Salmon Skin and 4 new selections of sumptuous sushi trios.

US Potatoes in Cilantro Pesto

When one of my kids got sick because of hypokaelemia, (low potassium levels in the blood) the doctor required him to eat foods high in potassium like banana and potatoes. I learned too that US potatoes can help restore electrolyte balance, as well as an excellent source of vitamin C, a good source of potassium (even more than bananas), vitamin B6, and is naturally fat, sodium, and cholesterol free when prepared properly.  A medium sized potato only contains 110 calories.

So after his hospitalization, I made it a point to incorporate potatoes whenever I can in the dishes I would prepare for the kids-- and not just ordinary potatoes but US potatoes which are even healthier.

Another important thing I learned was that how you cook potatoes can have an effect on its nutritional properties so you should use olive oil, salt and pepper and avoid adding MSG to season it.

In time, it became a habit of mine to include US potatoes whenever I do my groceries along with other veggies.

One of my go to dishes, is the Baby Potato in Cilantro Pesto which is both a great side dish or a snack (even goes well with salad!)

I learned this recipe from my mother and the smell alone whenever I cook it makes my kids excited as the aroma is just too flavorful and I wouldnt have any difficulty calling them out for dinner. Im sharing the recipe with you hoping your kids would love them as much as I do.

INGREDIENTS

3/4 lb  US potatoes

1-1 1/2 tsp salt,

Freshly ground pepper, to taste

2-3 tbsp Cilantro Pesto(or other seasoning)

1 Tbsp  Grated cheese

1. Place the potatoes in a medium saucepan and add cold water just to cover. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat, and then reduce to a simmer. Cook until the potatoes can be easily pierced with a fork, about 8-10 minutes, depending on their size.

2. Drain the potatoes and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the pesto and toss to coat. (Optional) Sprinkle some grated cheese on top. Serve while still warm.

The above serving is good enough for 3 kids in one seating, you can partner it with fried or broiled chicken. Yummy! Healthy and good for the whole family.

5 REASONS US POTATOES ARE GOOD FOR YOUR HEART

 1.  US Potatoes are cholesterol-free and have zero saturated fat. According to the 2010 Dietary guidelines by the USDA and Department of Health and Human Services, potatoes have no cholesterol or saturated fat. While many factors affect heart disease, diets low in cholesterol and saturated fat may reduce its risk.

2. US Potatoes are a good source of potassium and low in sodium. Diets containing foods that include potassium and are low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Potatoes with skin are loaded with potassium — more than bananas, spinach or broccoli — and are naturally sodium free. That is why I always choose to cook potatoes with their skin on.

3.  US Potatoes are a good source of fiber. A medium potato with skin contributes 2 grams of fiber, which provides 8% of the daily value per serving. Dietary fiber has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including improving blood lipid levels, regulating blood glucose, and increasing satiety (makes you feel full longer), which may help with weight loss.

4.   US Potatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C protects arteries from the damaging effects of cholesterol. Potatoes rank in the top 5 of dietary sources of vitamin C for Americans, and provide 45% of the daily value.

5.  US Potatoes are a good source of Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is required for the synthesis of hemoglobin and essential component of red blood cells. It also helps reduce levels of homocysteine, of which high levels have been implicated in heart disease and stroke.

US Potatoes are available at selected SM Supermarkets, Rustans Supermarkets, Shopwise, Pioneer Center Supermarket, and Duty Free Philippines.

Young artists show their unique flair at the 2017 Global Art Students’ Exhibition

Armed with a mission of training children to think creatively while providing the best art learning environment for artistic expression, Global Art Philippines held the 2017 Global Art Students’ Exhibition at the upper ground atrium of SM Aura. The exciting and fun activity took place in partnership with SM Aura as part of the mall’s Art in Aura event.

Similar to previous years, the annual exhibition put together a carefully curated display of unique and original works by Global Art students rendered in various media including oil pastel and color pencil, poster color paint on paper, canvas and acrylic paints, and clay. A portion of the exhibit area featured some students’ pencil sketch on paper.

“Each year, we and our students and their families look forward to this event which provides the perfect venue to display their artworks that they had worked so hard on during the program. It’s also an opportunity for our students from different branches to come together and admire each other’s artworks, be inspired, and learn from each other,” said Yenny Saw, Country Manager of Global Art Philippines.   “We are thankful to SM Aura who generously provided a free venue for this event and for their commitment to promoting the arts and young, budding artists like our students

The exhibit is in a way a prelude to the much-anticipated National Level Art Competition which will be held on Sept 24, 2017, at SMX AURA, and prepares students in terms of working independently, managing their time, and giving it their best.

Over 200 students joined by their families and friends participated in the whole day affair that started from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  These budding artists and illustrators came from different Global Art schools in Metro Manila including Ortigas (Greenhills), Katipunan, Fun Ranch Tiendesitas, Makati, Serendra, Alabang, Del Monte-QC, Binondo and New Manila.

“We are very much elated on the turnout of participants and the genuine interest of the public to know more about Global Art. We received a lot of inquiries from people asking about our programs. Incidentally, Global Art is offering a back-to-school promo until June 30, 2017 where students can avail of discounts,” Saw shared.

Established in 1999 in Malaysia, Global Art opened its first branch in the Philippines in 2008 and currently has 15 locations found in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Pampanga and General Santos. The art school is also operating in 16 different countries such as USA, Australia, China, India and all of the Southeast Asia.

Its programs are open to students of all ages – from three to 60 – and include Creative Drawing, Acrylic Painting, Cartoon and Comic, Clay, Sketching, Poster Making and Cultural Program (creating icons of different countries using clay).

B.Y.O.B. (BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIPS FROM KING SUE)

The B.Y.O.B. (“bring your own baon”) concept has a lot of benefits—from saving money to ensuring that your kids get proper nutrition. KING SUE  rounds up some  BYOB tips to make your child’s field trip, excursion, lunch or snacks appetizing and delicious.

1. Plan ahead. A well-thought out weekly menu will save you time. Make a calendar and assign specific meals daily, infusing healthy combinations of fish and vegetables with meat. Sit down with your kids when planning the menu and take them with you for grocery shopping. Surf the Internet or exchange recipes with friends. The secret is to make the menu as balanced and as exciting to eat  as possible.

2. Cook in batches. Assign two days weekly—preferably Sunday and Wednesday—for marketing and cooking. Prepare the main meats and pack them in plastic wares with your special marinade. Pre-slice other ingredients like King Sue sausages for your pasta, King Sue hams for pizza, pre-boil or pre-grill as needed, then pack separately. This will save you time on daily meal preparation.

3. Take it easy. Select fuss-free, easy to prepare recipes that will not take too much of your time in the morning. King Sue has pre-packed meats such as tocino, chicken nuggets, burgers, longanisa and a whole lot more. Mix them with eggs and potatoes for a yummy omelet, as a nice add-on to a sandwich (don’t forget the greens!), or to a mouthwatering pasta or soup. Or you may simply fry them  and pair them with a simple salad and you’re good to go. Meanwhile, King Sue Hawaiian Ham can be mixed into Yang Chow Fried Rice or used as a topping to pizza. If you have extra macaroni at home, prepare baked mac  using King Sue old English pork  sausages and German Franks and  top with quick-melt cheese boost.  Looking for other ideas, check out www.kingsue.com for recipes.

4. Jazz up the packing. If you’re a crafter, doing a bento box is a fun idea.  There are also  other means to jazz up the lunch box. Cookie cutters can turn  fruits, cheese, and breads into fun-shaped food items. Or try to cover the rice in cling-film so you could stick on some googley eyes, sticker smileys, cut-out hearts, and other modern emoticons. Insert a post-it with one liners such as “Good luck on the exams today!” or “Enjoy your lunch. I love you”. You may not see his wide grin when he opens his lunchbox but wait till he gets home and smothers you with hugs and kisses.

Call 881-0530 364-5430, 376-6441 and +639199889642 for inquiries and orders, and check out FB IG Twitter @kingsueham or email sales@kingsue.com. Hashtags: #kingsueham #kingsue #ilovekingsue #cookingathome #philippines.  Also check out  www.kingsue.com

Celebrate the art of cooking and preparing meals with La Germania

Remember the saying that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach? While it may still hold true, the responsibility of preparing food isn't the sole responsibility of women anymore.

Even when I was growing up, both my tatay and nanay shared kitchen duties--each had their own specialties-- my tatay his Papaitan, Seafood Lomi and Adobong Pusit while my nanay was armed with a recipes she learned from being a Bicolana-- making magic dishes with her favorite ingredient-- gata.

So whenever I think of my childhood, the first memories that often comes to mind were the meals we shared together--us siblings helping out in the kitchen and sharing these dishes over dinner.

And although I've never really learned how to cook, the one thing I never forgot during my kitchen duties was the trusty white oven we had. An investment my parents would tell us and the brand was La Germania.

La Germania recently launches stoves, range ovens, range hoods, cookers at Guevarra's, Manila. The event was hosted by Suzi Entrata,  husband and wife team  Chef Roland and Jackie Laudico. They whipped out their bestseller dishes and desserts using La Germania range and oven.

La Germania products have been meticulously engineered to be tough enough to withstand the constant grind of the modern Filipino kitchen.

Manufactured locally by General Heat Corporation under the trademark La Germania, by virtue of a licensing agreement between Bertazzoni SPA of Italy, La Germania stoves, range ovens, range hoods, cookers and accessories are prized by families and professional kitchens for their longevity, mileage, superior quality and performance.  It is also distributed in the Philippines alongside its sister brands Bertazzoni La Germania and Bertazzoni.
