BDO’s other ‘heroes’ continue the good fight

Many cities across the archipelago have been under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) for over a month now to help flatten the COVID-19 curve. Despite the lockdown, the country’s frontliners have not ceased in serving the Filipinos. They have been braving the streets to sustain the operations of their respective institutions.

To help ensure that banking services remain uninterrupted, BDO Unibank, Inc. keeps its branches, ATMs, cash accept machines, and digital channels available through the hard work and resilience of its employees, both at the branches and head office. Just as important are BDO’s other frontliners – the security and maintenance personnel who support employees as they find ways for clients.

Working tirelessly behind the scenes, the bank’s dedicated team of security guards and janitors keep BDO’s workplaces safe and sanitized amid the ECQ. These are their stories.

Taking a thousand steps

When the national government implemented the lockdown, public transportation was suspended. Despite this, Dan Martinez, a security guard at BDO’s Corporate Center in Makati (CCM), was determined to report to work even if it means walking to the office all the way from Tandang Sora, Quezon City.

“Sa umpisa, hindi ko napansin yung pagod dahil kasama kong naglalakad yung mga katrabaho ko. Pero pagdating sa Buendia, naramdaman ko nang sumasakit ang mga paa at binti ko. (At the start, I didn’t feel myself getting tired since I was walking with colleagues. But when we got to Buendia, my feet and legs started hurting),” Martinez described his nearly four-hour journey on foot. “Para kaming nagpepenitensya (It was like we were walking a walk of penance),”

At the office, right after changing into his uniform, Martinez called his family to tell them that he had made it there safely. He even video called to assure his seven-year-old daughter, who always reminds him to be careful, that he was okay. “Sa kanila ako humuhugot ng lakas para lumaban sa buhay. Kahit mahirap, di ko naaalintana yung pagod o kapahamakan. Iniisip ko lang kapakanan nila (I get my strength to keep fighting from my family. Life may be tough but I don’t mind the fatigue and danger. I only think about their welfare).”

Crisanto Orias, maintenance personnel, also walked for about two hours, from the room he rents in Pasay to BDO’s Corporate Center in Ortigas (CCO). Although his boss advised that attendance was optional, he still decided to work. “Pinili kong magtrabaho dahil kailangan kong gampanan ang responsibilidad ko bilang ama sa dalawa kong anak (I chose to work because I need to fulfill my duty as a father to my two sons),” Orias said.

For four days, Orias walked to and from the office. It wasn’t easy and he said that he had almost given up. But the single father mustered strength from his sons.

(On the way, many police and traffic enforcers stop me. Once, after showing my quarantine pass and ID, they asked me, ‘Do you know that what you’re doing is difficult? You are risking your life.’ I answered, ‘If I don’t work, I don’t earn. If I don’t earn, what will happen to my family?’)”

His fellow maintenance personnel in CCO, Rovic Amoring, has the same sentiment. He too has a family to support so he also chose to report to work even if it meant walking from Taguig to Ortigas for two hours.

Courage and dedication amid COVID-19. BDO’s frontliners Dan Martinez (security, leftmost), Jeric Alberina (maintenance, middle), Mamerto Ramos, and Jayson Martirez (security, rightmost photo, left and right, respectively) continue to work onsite amid the enhanced community quarantine to support BDO in serving its clients and provide for their families.

Staying in

Martinez, Orias, and Amoring know the importance of keeping themselves healthy. They wear protective masks and practice social distancing on their way to the office. At work, they keep their masks on, maintain a safe distance from people, and wash their hands or apply sanitizers as frequently as possible. Orias and Amoring even wear gloves, as they carry out their duties.

When Orias gets home, he puts alcohol on his hands and stays outside for 30 minutes before entering his room. His sons’ welfare is his top priority. As for Martinez, his youngest daughter welcomes him when he gets home. “Natutuwa siya pag uwi ko, gusto yumakap, pero sinasabihan ko na maliligo muna ako (She gets excited when I get home and wants a hug. But I tell that I need to shower first),” he said.

A week into the ECQ, BDO offered the option for its security and maintenance personnel to stay-in its headquarters. Martinez accepted the opportunity. So did Mamerto Ramos, a former security guard who now serves as a security driver for employees. He has been working in BDO since October 1986. Living all the way in Bulacan, he appreciated the stay-in option.

Maswerte ako dahil sa pagkakataon magtrabaho sa kabila ng ECQ (I need to work because life is hard. I need to support, not only my wife and three kids, but also, as the first-born son, my family in San Carlos, Pangasinan. Some of my siblings there don’t have work or can’t work because of the lockdown. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work during this time),” said Ramos.

Jeric Alberina, maintenance personnel, also opted to stay-in another BDO office. On the day of the lockdown, he trudged the streets for four hours, from his house in Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City to the office. When he and his colleagues were offered to stay-in that same day, he didn’t think twice.

Besides accommodation, Alberina said that the bank also provides them with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He and his colleagues, he added, are grateful to BDO. “Hindi kami pinilit magtrabaho, pero pinili ko magtrabaho. Ang tatay ko na taxi driver ay di makapagtrabaho dahil sa ECQ. Ako lang at ang kapatid ko ang nakakapagtrabaho at inaasahan ng pamilya para tugunan ang aming mga gastusin, kaya’t malaki ang pasasalamat ko sa pagkakataong kumita (We weren’t forced to work, but I chose to. My dad, a taxi driver, can’t work because of the ECG. Only my brother and I are working, so our family depends on us to pay for the expenses. I am so thankful for the opportunity to earn),” said Alberina.

Finding ways

Orias and Amoring, on the other hand, decided not to stay-in CCO and instead, avail of the bank’s shuttle service. For about a week, the two shared the same shuttle and were fetched from nearby pick-up points. But, when the government mandated a limited number of passengers per vehicle as part of social distancing and its stricter ECQ guidelines, the bank had to cancel its shuttle service.

Because he couldn’t afford to lose his daily wage, Amoring was ready to resume walking. “Hindi ako pwedeng tumigil sa pagtra-trabaho. Kapapanganak lang ng asawa ko sa pangalawa kong anak sa Leytenoong April 8. Kailangan kong patuloy sustentuhan ang pamilya ko (I cannot stop working. My wife had just given birth to my second child in Leyte on April 8. I need to keep supporting my family),” said Amoring.

Orias and Amoring’s supervisor advised them to find bicycles as walking endangered their lives. Orias was able to borrow his neighbor’s mountain bike, shortening his travel from a two-hour walk to a 45-minute ride. As for Amoring, he was finally able to rent a bicycle after losing three days of work to looking for one.

While he appreciated the option to stay-in, security guard Jayson Martirez decided to brave the streets daily, wearing his facial mask and driving his motorbike from Payatas, Quezon City to CCM. He added that he appreciated the bank’s kindness in providing those who stay-out with free lunch.

Ganun pa man, mas mahirap ang walang pinagkakakitaan. It’s difficult to fight an enemy you can’t see. Despite this, it’s more difficult not to have a job. I’m thankful to BDO for my livelihood, for enabling me to earn and continuously provide for my family),” said Martirez.

A message to fellow frontliners

The ECQ was due to end on April 30, but was further extended to May 15 in Metro Manila and other high-risk areas. For BDO’s security and maintenance frontliners, this only means that their mission continues.

Alberina and Martirez are optimistic that this too will pass. “Pagsubok lang to. Malalampasan din natin to. Lagi tayong magdasal para sa kapakanan ng iba, lalo na ng mga healthcare professionals at mga mahal natin sa buhay (We will get through this challenge. Let’s keep praying for the welfare of others, especially healthcare professionals and our loved ones),” said Alberina.

Ginabayan tayo ng Panginoon habang tayo ay nagtra-trabaho (Life goes on despite our situation. God is guiding us as we work),” Martirez added.

Martinez and Ramos remind their fellow frontliners to be patient and strong. “Kailangan ng pasensya sa panahong ito. Anumang pagsubok, kailangan mong lumaban (You need patience during this time. Whatever challenge comes your way, you need to fight),” Ramos said.

Keep in mind that you are strong and you can surpass life’s challenges. Take care of your health and trust in God),” Martinez said.

To those who are staying home, Orias and Amoring have a message. “Kung di importante ang pupuntahan mo, wag ka na lumabas. Mahirap ang ginagawa namin, pero patuloy kaming nakikipagsapalaran dahil may umaasa sa amin (If it’s not important, stay home. Working during this time is difficult but we continue to fight because our families depend on us),” Orias said.

Kung may option kayo to stay home, stay home. Pakinggan natin ang mag eksperto. Mag social distancingtayo, mag sanitizers, at maligo lagi. (If you have the option to stay home, stay home. Listen to the experts. Observe social distancing, apply sanitizers, and shower regularly. Let’s do everything to beat the virus and normalize our lives again. Let’s protect each other against this invisible enemy. Let’s support our frontliners who continue to work, not only for their families, but also for us),” concluded Amoring.

Eraserheads mini-reunion, 6Cyclemind & other OPM bands come together for Smart Music Live Online Sessions

Since the start of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), the public turned to live online concerts for entertainment. OPM bands were amongst the first group of artists to share their music for free and for a cause. This trend continues to bring meaningful connections with our loved ones during these hard times.

On cue, Smart also took this opportunity to go beyond bringing international acts to Manila to delight subscribers’ passion for music. To raise funds for COVID-19 frontliners, Smart Music Live (SML) Online Sessions brings a more relaxed version of the gig scene in a series of online streaming concerts on Facebook.

SML Online Sessions kicked off with Soupstar Velvet Live! Sessions presented by Smart, an eight-week jamming series headlined by OPM bands including Moonstar88, Pedicab, Gracenote, Banda ni Kleggy, and Imago, and recently the Soup of the week which was hosted by Raymund Marasigan last April 29 and the Piano Show hosted by Eunice Jorge of Gracenote last April 30.

Up next, the Facebook live streaming concert will banner OPM bands, 6Cyclemind and a mini Eraserheads reunion in Ultra Combo, composed of Pinoy rock icons Raymund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala. To make it more fun and interactive, fans can now have a chance to join in these calls and “hang out” with their favorite bands.

Check out Smart Communications official Facebook page for updates. In the meantime, here’s the remaining FB concert schedule: 6Cyclemind on May 4 and Ultra Combo featuring Raymund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala on May 11.

Metrobank rolls out Mobile ATMs to serve select communities during ECQ

In the time of heightened risks and financial anxiety, the daily banking chores of people are forced out of normalcy. The usual walk to the nearest ATM is now a challenge for areas covered by a strict lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Now, more than ever, accessible banking services are a necessity. Metrobank brings meaningful banking closer to customers with the Metrobank Mobile ATMs.

Customers can do their daily ATM transactions through the Metrobank Mobile ATMs that are currently roaming around select communities in Metro Manila. The Mobile ATM allows cash withdrawal, account balance inquiry, bills payment, fund transfer to Metrobank accounts, prepaid mobile reload, and checkbook request.

This way, customers will find comfort and ease in managing their finances even under the Enhanced Community Quarantine. More importantly, to ensure that convenience and safety go hand in hand, the ATMs are regularly disinfected throughout the day. Customers are advised to wear proper face masks and to observe social distancing while waiting in line. Alcohol sanitizers and other disinfectants are also made available for their use.

World Vision and Shell Foundation distribute tons of fresh vegetables in Metro Manila and CDO

World Vision Development Foundation (WVDF) today provides 16,800 kilos of vegetables to the residents of Quezon City, Malabon City, Manila City and Cagayan de Oro City, four of the hard-hit cities under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

In collaboration with Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), the child-focused organization packed and distributed fresh vegetable packs containing okra, sayote, cabbage scorpio, wombok, potatoes, squash, eggplant, onion, garlic, tomatoes, bitter gourd, string beans, carrots and chili pepper to 5,750 households and 60 frontliners in Quezon City, Malabon City, Manila City and Cagayan de Oro City.

PSFI’s Ani Para sa Bayani (translated Harvest for Heroes) project aims to help struggling small farmers sell their produce and to also ensure that frontliners and the vulnerable communities have access to nutritious foods.

"Nutrients in vegetables could help strengthen our body's immune system to fight diseases including COVID-19. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables," shared Carleneth San Valentin, World Vision's technical manager for health.

San Valentin explains that while we continue to implement interventions on COVID-19, programmes that address undernutrition and malnutrition especially among children under-5 years old in the country, whether nutrition specific or nutrition sensitive, need to continue.

Nanay Nerissa, a mother of two from Malabon City shares that since the implementation of the extended community quarantine, his husband is not able to drive his pedicab and even get extra work and earn a living because they cannot go out. She adds “Umaasa kami ngayon sa paminsang minsang kita dito sa ulingan. Mahirap din para sa dalawang anak ko na bata pa, 10 at five years old dahil kung walang kita, sa relief lang kami umaasa.” (We are currently relying on the irregular income from selling charcoal. It is especially difficult for my two young children, 10 and five years old, while we do not have a stable source of income, we rely on relief goods.)

Her 10-year old son Ric, who is a World Vision sponsored child says he misses going to school but since classes are suspended, he sometimes helps his mother repack charcoal aside from cooking rice and cleaning the house.

PSFI Executive Director Sebastian Quiniones Jr. says, "This pandemic is allowing all to show the best of humanity, especially during this season of Lent where we are commanded to love one another. We at PSFI have always believed in the power of unity and collaboration, and this successful partnership with World Vision and Filipino farmers has manifested that." While the collaboration begins by supporting farmers in Luzon and assisting vulnerable communities in Metro Manila and Cagayan de Oro City, the organizations hope to extend their collaboration to other areas in need of assistance.

"Thanks to Pilipinas Shell Foundation for partnering with us in sending much needed help to families especially their children affected by COVID-19. We pray that God will continue to bless you even more as you generously give back to our communities," World Vision national director Rommel V. Fuerte said.

As of today, World Vision has provided 458 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits catering to 2,140 frontliners. It also helped install nine (13) tents to be used as isolation and triage areas for COVID-19 referral hospitals in Metro Manila, Misaims Oriental, Pangsinan and Bicol Region and two (2) huge mobile storage units each with an area of 320 sq meters for the Quezon City Risk Reduction and Management Council and Office of the Civil Defence. At least 2,000 families have also received sanitation kits that include bath soaps, alcohol, toothbrushes for children and adults, toothpaste, face mask and mouthwash. World Vision has also reached over 1.4 million people nationwide on awareness raising on COVID-19 including infection prevention and control (IPC) measures.

In a recent advisory, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) gave the go signal to local governments to use a portion of their development fund to address the threat of the pandemic, which includes the provision of food assistance and relief goods for affected households.

Meanwhile to slow down the spread of COVID-19, the Philippine government has extended the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine to May 15, 2020.

Alfamart continues Super Minimart openings to serve more communities

Amid the Luzon-wide Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), Alfamart, the first and only Super Minimart chain in the Philippines, has resumed its expansion to cater to the needs of local communities.

What was once a simple and mundane task has been made more challenging and risky by the ECQ. Grocery shopping is now much more complicated than it used to be, as people now have to contend with curfews, checkpoints, social distancing, and quarantine passes to help stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help address these concerns and alleviate the burden on individual households, neighborhood minimarts like Alfamart have become more popular destinations for these errands, as they are closer to home.

In the recent week, Alfamart opened eight new stores across Luzon; namely, in Tabun, Angeles, Pampanga; Barangay 176, Bagong Silang, Caloocan; Poblacion, Floridablanca, Pampanga; Palico, Imus, Cavite; Silangan, Rosario, Cavite; Daan Sarile, Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija; Saog, Marilao, Bulacan; and Grand Valley Subdivision, Angono, Rizal.

Ten more stores are opening in other locations in May.

Alfamart Philippines COO Harvey Ong pointed out that the expansion amid the ECQ is more about following through on Alfamart’s advocacy to improve communities. “The ECQ has been very challenging for everyone, especially those living in communities that are significantly farther from malls, supermarkets, and groceries,” Ong said. “We want to bring that safe, convenient, and comfortable shopping experience closer to home through our Super Minimarts,” he continued.

Ong also highlighted how Alfamart is doing everything it can to reduce health risks, and inconveniences, for both employees and customers. “Our stores follow strict sanitary and hygiene protocols. We also provide PPEs for our frontline and backend staff,” he said. “Also, as part of our walk-to-work philosophy, we hire our store crew locally. As much as possible, we prefer our employees to be within walking distance of their assigned stores. This helps manage their travel time,” he further explained.

Ong enumerated other measures that ensure the store staff are taken care of such as free shuttle rides, proper coordination with checkpoints for expedited supply chain deliveries, proper scheduling and shorter operating hours.

“In these trying times, everyone is called to be vigilant and serve. Alfamart will do its part to help the community by keeping as many of our existing stores open and reaching out to more communities so we can serve more people,” he concluded.

Bayad Center’s BAYADnihan campaign makes bills payment more meaningful

While most utility and loan companies have announced extended due dates for bills payment in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic, those who are able to still pay on schedule can contribute to the spirit of bayanihan and help their fellows in need while still managing their finances responsibly.

Even the simple act of paying bills can be a way to help disadvantaged individuals and communities through Bayad Center’s “BAYADnihan, Tulong-tulong para sa Bayan” campaign.

This is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative where a portion of payments settled from March 1 to April 30, 2020, at any Bayad Center branch or using the mobile app is donated to One Meralco Foundation.

The funds raised will be used to distribute food for the homeless and underprivileged families whose plight has become more challenging with the threats of the health crisis and economic impact of the enhanced community quarantine.

In support of the endeavor, Bayad Center employees are also pledging a part of their salaries to generate funds and further the cause.

Through the “BAYADnihan” campaign, settling and managing their monthly financial obligations has become more meaningful as it opens up an avenue for the paying public to make a positive contribution to communities in their own humble way.

The biggest and most trusted multi-channel payment platform in the Philippines, Bayad Center stays true to its mission of making payments convenient and accessible to all, and more meaningful, in this time of crisis. In fulfilling this commitment, it also fuels communal solidarity among Filipinos.
