Promoting financial independence empowers Filipino women

“You can’t empower women without helping them become financially independent.”

That is how award-winning Filipina entrepreneur Rissa Mananquil Trillo put it squarely on the issue of gender equality in the 21st century.

She added there is need for a change in mindset involved in this advocacy.

During a virtual tribe meet-up for She Talks Asia called Ladyboss Money Guide: Mastering your finances through a healthy money mindset, Trillo said there is a need to amend the gender roles at home when it comes to women empowerment.

"One of the biggest mindsets that we should change about financial independence among women is this is not about money but more about women and their roles," Trillo said.

She added: "If you think about it, it really starts as kids. We see the dynamics in the household—who pays the bills? Who makes the decisions in the family when there's an expensive item to buy or a big decision to be made? Even seeing your own mom asking permission from your dad to buy something or pocket money to shop unconsciously shapes our gender roles at home. That's why so many women today are uncomfortable about money, and are hesitant to talk or learn about money. We're really influenced by the kind of culture or household we grew up in. We should change that mindset and remember that women should be comfortable to be financially independent and handle their own money—that women can be both bread makers and breadwinners of the home.”

This is why Trillo is so certain that when it comes to empowering women, it should always involve helping them save and earn their own money.

“It is hard to empower women if they are not financially independent. Financial independence helps create the life that you want. In singlehood or in marriage, being economically independent empowers women to stand on their own two feet and take charge of their future,” the mom of three and women empowerment advocate emphasized.

Certified financial consultant Nicole Suarez, who was also in the tribe meet-up, agreed with Trillo, adding that it is also about finding what your goals are.

Suarez thinks a solid financial foundation includes getting rid of irresponsible spending habits.

“Find out what your goals are and make sure these goals are your goals and not the goals of the people you see on social media. Make sure you dig deep and find out what you really want,” Suarez said.

The 'I deserve this mindset’ is like -- I had a rough day, I'm going out and drink and party and splurge. I worked so hard all week, I deserve to buy a bag or I deserve to buy new shoes.

“I am not saying that you're not supposed to do this. Of course, you are allowed to pamper yourself. But what happened was, I was doing it at the expense of my budget. I was living beyond my means,” she further said.

This is why Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) senior product manager Maple Solano emphasized the importance of taking charge of finances – through savings and investment – as soon as possible.

“A very unhealthy habit is procrastinating. We have a tendency to set aside things for later. We have to start now. If you don’t have a savings bank account, open it now. If you don’t have investments, do it now. The mindset is now,” Solano said.

Solano then injected that it is important for women to have the perfect banking partner for their savings and investment.

Investment opportunities, according to her, include tapping time deposits, foreign exchange, and unit investment trust funds (UITFs), can all easily be undertaken with RCBC mobile banking app.

As a start, Solano said those who still don’t have a banking account can easily open an online banking account with RCBC. That way, they don’t have to go to a physical store and apply for one.

The “Ladyboss Money Guide: Mastering your finances through a healthy money mindset” tribe meet-up was organized by She Talks Asia in partnership with RCBC.

She Talks Asia, on the other hand, is a movement that celebrates the modern woman, providing a space for inspiration, and support among women across multiple platforms.

Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk sought to uplift vulnerable communities and share the spirit of giving to foster kids

As we greet a new year, new challenges have inevitably arisen given the current state of the world. With these problems that we face during these uncertain times, Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk sought to uplift vulnerable communities and share the spirit of giving. Last Christmas, Alaska invited members of its Facebook community, MOMs of Alaska (MOMAs), to make the holidays a little brighter for the children from the company’s partner orphanages, Christian Compassion Ministries Foundation, Inc. and House of Refuge Foundation, Inc. Over a hundred members of the Alaska MOMAs community came together to create special Christmas cards, with creative designs and personalized messages dedicated to each of the children.

Alaska collected the Christmas cards and held a turnover with the partner institutions, donating 70 days’ worth of “Lakas at Talas” in the form of Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk products that can give the children the added nutrition to help with their brain and body development while they are growing. Gift packs with toys and educational materials were also included in the turnover, which the children welcomed with smiles and loud cheers.

Mailyn Balairos, Center Head of Christian Compassion Ministries Foundation, Inc. (CCMFI), a church-based Christian organization that aims to provide children with educational assistance, shelter, medical aid, skills training and nourish their souls with the word of God, shared her appreciation to the moms who took their time to create Christmas cards for the children under their care. “On behalf of CCMFI and the children, I wanted to convey my deepest gratitude to the moms of Alaska and to Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk for this unforgettable event for the children,” Mailyn shared.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) launches the “ASMR Experience the Philippines” Project

The Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT) invites everyone to go on an ambient sound trip and experience a destination through the distinct sounds that can be heard when all is quiet.

In launching the “ASMR Experience the Philippines” Project, the DOT aims to bring people to certain destinations through ASMR videos that explore the natural sounds of a place, allowing one to tune into nature and be fully present in the moment.

The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology (QJEP) defines Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) as a “special perceptual phenomenon in which some people can experience a tingling, static-like sensation in response to some certain auditory or visual stimulations”. It brings a pleasant feeling that one experiences in response to certain sounds, visuals, feelings, or descriptions. The sensation leads to contentment and relaxation.

“This project of the DOT is anchored on the concept that, when people travel, they go ‘sightseeing’, but it is with their ears that they hear and sense things all around them. Through these videos, people get to share with the travel experience,” said Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat.

The initial four ASMR videos that will be launched feature the Mountain Province in the Cordilleras, particularly the remote town of Barlig located at the foothills of Mt. Amuyao and the journey to the summit of the mountain.

With Mountain Province currently under Alert Level 4, and the rest of the country under the observation of different alert level restrictions, these videos will allow viewers to experience the grandeur of Mountain Province no matter where they are, through their video devices.

Secrets to successful tidying up and home improvement featured in first run of AXA Rewards Real Sessions

Clearing your house of clutter will not only free up space, but can also help you and your family sleep better and become more healthy and active. This is why, when your home is overrun with clutter, it’s time to take action and focus on getting organized so you can start the new year on a cleaner, healthier note.

This was the main message during the recent AXA Rewards Real Sessions workshop, organized by AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance providers. Real Sessions is a workshop series exclusively for AXA Rewards members that cover different aspects of life, all designed to help members achieve the life they want.

One of the perks of the rewards program is exclusive access to a series of workshops, the first of which was a talk on home improvement and decluttering by Christine Dychiao, the first certified Konmari consultant in the Philippines. Konmari is a simple but effective tidying method that helps people organize their homes and transform their lives. This was the first in the workshop series that will cover topics such as mental health, fitness and nutrition, financial empowerment, and more, happening throughout 2022.

Here are six KonMari rules of tidying that Dychiao shared during the online workshop:

Commit yourself to tidying up. Many people think that tidying up is a chore and something that takes too much time. But if you think about decluttering as a celebration - that you’re liberating yourself from clutter - you’ll be able to make more room for what truly matters. The less clutter you have, the more you can organize and lessen your stress. Committing at least three hours of your time a day to decluttering can go a long way.

Imagine your ideal lifestyle and space. A great way to start decluttering is by simply visualizing how the space will look, how you’d feel when moving in that space, and how you’d use that space. Do you want your books to be placed on a specific side of the room? Would you be staying in that space for a long period of time? It should be clear in your head on what the space will look like so you can organize it exactly the way you want.

Finish discarding first. A lot of people just move things around when they tidy up. They put the clutter on another bed, closet, drawer, or room, but it’s better to physically get the stuff out of the house. Ask yourself, “Do you really need this certain item that you haven’t used for a long time?” At some point, you have to let go of things that you don’t use anymore. You can donate them or practice regifting these items, just in time for the holiday season. This way, you can focus on things that really matter.

Tidy by category, not by location. When you simply tidy up the same things together, you’ll see how much clutter you have of that particular thing. If you have a lot of books or clothes, you’ll see piles when you’re decluttering. It may also help you realize that maybe you don’t want to spend more money on the same stuff. You can start with your clothes -- gather everything in one spot, and decide on what you want to keep. For your books, don’t just pull them off the shelf. You have to go through each book. Ask yourself these questions: Are you done reading this book already? Do you have a friend that you think may love that book? After organizing them in piles, simply put back the unused or unread books on your shelf.

Follow the right order. Start with the easy ones: books, clothes, papers. Then, you move on to the “komono” which translates as “miscellaneous.” And finally, end it with the sentimental items since these things are typically the hardest to let go of and you want to save them as long as you can.

Ask yourself if it “sparks joy.” When you can’t figure out what to do with an item, always ask yourself, “Does it spark joy?”, “Is it functional?”, “Does this thing give me fulfillment and will it bring joy in the long run?” The key is to surround yourself with things that ignite your happiness.

Once you’ve done tidied up, all you have to do now is make decluttering a habit in your life, and keep moving toward the decluttered, stress-free, and better life you want to live. Stay tuned for more life learning from upcoming Real Sessions next year.

If you’re on the hunt for that perfect phone here are some tips to keep in mind

In today’s world, smartphones are now more than just tools for communication–it’s an all around device used for everything from education, work, gaming, and even to access essential services. This is why finding the perfect phone for you can be difficult, especially with the number of choices available in the market today.

So if you’re on the hunt for that perfect phone here are some tips to keep in mind:

Do your research

The first thing you need before going out in the wild and looking for that perfect phone is to research, research, and research. Make a list of what you need a phone for: is it primarily for work? For general usage? For gaming? Because with the number of phones available in the market today, many are made for specific purposes.

The vivo Y76 5G for example, was built for long gaming hours with its big battery and fast charging so if that’s what you’re going for, this is the phone to consider.

Look for the phone that works hard for you

A smartphone is an all-around gadget and while you may be buying it for a specific purpose, which calls for specific specifications, you’ll be using it for a lot of other things as well. A good phone is a phone that can handle all your needs without a hiccup.

If you need to run several applications at once or need extra memory to play your game seamlessly, getting a phone that has a large RAM should be a non-negotiable. This is where the vivo Y76 5G can be your perfect phone with its 8GB+4GB extended RAM, you can count on this phone to work as hard as you do.

Go for a phone that’s classic and timeless

A phone that looks sleek, stylish, and timeless is something that undoubtedly brings joy (in the words of Marie Kondo). The phone you get is something that will accompany you for several years and you should always be happy seeing it, using it, and holding it in your hands.

Coming in two amazing colors, Midnight Space and Cosmic Aurora, the vivo Y76 5G checks all those boxes together with its super slim design (it’s only 7.79mm thick!), it's a phone that’s as stylish as you are.

Choose a brand that has world-class technology

Hundreds of phones are launched every season and it’s tough to sift through everything even if you do extensive research. A good tip is to stick to brands that have a proven track record of delivering great phones with great technology.

vivo, as one the leading smartphone brands globally, ensures that every phone they release is innovative and top of its class. The newest entrant to the highly popular Y-series, the Y76 5G is a phone that is not only packed with premium specs while having a mid-ranged pricing, it’s also a phone that can do more–gamers or even those who just like putting out TikToks and Reels are sure to enjoy the AI Editor and Dual View camera. The AI Editor automatically creates videos by stitching clips intuitively while the Dual View video allows users to both use the rear and front camera at the same time perfect for capturing those perfect gaming moments or reaction shots.

Hold out for that sweet deal

One of the biggest considerations when it comes to buying a new smartphone is the price. A smartphone is an investment and it should always be worth the money you put in.

So if you’re not needing that phone immediately and if you’re on a strict budget, it may be wiser to wait and hold out for a sale, a deal, or even pre-order perks to make sure that you get the best deals for the phone you have in mind. You can also look at getting a smartphone that has all the premium specs but without the premium pricing like the Y76 5G which feels and works premium but with a very competitive price at P16,999.

To see the Y76 5G in action and to see some of the best in the competitive gaming scene in the country, don’t miss the first leg of the vivo Battle of Legends: Mobile Legends Bang Bang Tournament where five teams go head-to-head for a spot to play against the country’s top eSports teams and vivo ambassadors: Nexplay Esports and ECHO Philippines. Watch the uber-exciting tournament and get the freshest updates by visiting vivo’s Facebook page.

Sony’s New FX6 Firmware Update Boasts Real-time Tracking, Breathing Compensation

Sony recently announced a new firmware update (Version 2.00) for full-frame Cinema Line camera, FX6, that includes AI-based Real-time Tracking—a long-awaited Auto Focus feature that enables extreme precision when tracking subjects.

Real-time Tracking uses colour, pattern (brightness) and distance (depth) data to process spatial information in real time and AI detects and keeps track of the subject’s eye and face for tenaciously high accuracy.

Based on customer feedback, Sony incorporated new technologies into the firmware update to allow users to deliver stand-out creative content.

The firmware update includes focus breathing compensation[i] for a consistent angle of viewing when focusing, as well as a new technology—bokeh control mode—that takes advantage of variable ND filter. This mode automatically adjusts the ND filter and gain when the iris is operated, making it easy to adjust the amount of bokeh while suppressing exposure changes[ii]. The FX6 also allows 16-bit RAW output to an external recorder[iii] via HDMI[iv], allowing the flexible use of advanced post-production—ideal for movie makers. RAW output from HDMI also eliminates the need for conversion from SDI to HDMI, enabling shooting with a more compact shooting system.

In addition, the update boasts usability improvements including a new picture cache recording function that captures video retroactively[v] for continual recording without filling up a memory card or missing a crucial moment. This function is also available while shooting in S&Q mode. The FX6 features HDR and SDR dual production for SR Live as well as a 4-channel audio level meter[vi].

The FX6 is part of Sony's Cinema Line, a series of products that bring the company's expertise in imaging technology to a broad range of filmmakers and content creators.

The firmware update will be available around the end of January 2022 to download. Click here for more details.

[i] Angle of view and image quality may change slightly when this feature is turned ON. Breathing Compensation cannot be used when Distortion Comp. is OFF; when shooting in S&Q mode; or when the Rec Format codec is RAW or a selection that includes RAW. For the supported lenses, please check https://www.sony.net/dics/breathing/

[ii] This function is only available with E-mount lenses that can communicate with this camera, and maximum effect can be obtained through operation of the iris ring. Depending on the speed of operation, lens, shooting settings, and subject, the image may appear different and the brightness may change. The brightness may change when the direction of operation is reversed, such as when opening the iris after closing it, or when closing it after opening it. Performing a camera test prior to shooting is highly recommended.

[iii] A compatible external recorder is required. As of January 2022, ATOMOS NINJA V and NINJA V + can be used.

[iv] RAW output from HDMI is not available in S&Q mode. RAW output is not possible from both SDI and HDMI simultaneously.

[v] As soon as recording starts and saves it to memory cards by maintaining an internal cache memory of a specified duration when shooting.

[vi] On the FX6 version 2.0, the audio levels from CH1/CH2/CH3/CH4 can now be displayed together on the OSD (on-screen display).
