Carousell Philippines looks forward to 2022 with an optimistic perspective


With the pandemic crisis accelerating the expansion of the e-commerce and online classified ads landscape, Carousell Philippines looks forward to 2022 with an optimistic and bullish perspective. 

 

The fast-growing online buy-and-sell platform which closed 2021 with a USD 100M  investment from STIC Investments, a leading Korean private equity that invests across Asia, and the acquisition of Ox Street, one of the leading end-to-end marketplaces for authenticated sneakers and streetwear in Southeast Asia, is all set to create innovations to strengthen Carousell Philippines’ proposition for 2022. 

“The pandemic has provided customers with access to a significant variety of products from the convenience and safety of their homes. We see this shift as an opportunity and inspiration not only to make Carousell even better but most importantly, to serve Filipino customers better,” said  Carousell Philippines’ new General Manager Djon Nacario, who discussed the upcoming plans, innovations, business prospects, and directions of Carousell for the year in a recent media event. 

 

The pandemic scenario

 

During the pandemic, Carousell served as a helpline for a number of Filipinos when users set up community pantries funded by items sold on the Carousell app to aid those left most vulnerable by the crisis. 

 

During the recent Typhoon Odette, sellers have also initiated a donation drive by selling secondhand items and donating the proceeds to families and communities that were heavily affected by the typhoon. Listing views and monthly active users have also increased in 2021 as more users turn to Carousell to buy medical supplies and secondhand clothing while some users have also started selling on Carousell to supplement their income. 

 

We are very heartened at some of the grassroot initiatives that our users have started on the Carousell platform which shows the true spirit of Filipino resilience and bayanihan, especially in times of crisis. Carousell supports these humble initiatives by our users to extend help to the most vulnerable and to ensure that people can continue on with their lives amid the pandemic,” Djon said.

 

 Property 24 to merge with Carousell 

 

A highlight development for 2022 is the merging of Property24 with Carousell which is set to happen on March 8, 2022. According to Djon, this will provide an effective online platform for leading real estate developers, agencies, and brokers to help them showcase their property listings to a wider audience of qualified prospective buyers including the 4.62 million monthly visitors on Carousell. In line with this, Carousell is also working on initiatives to improve the user's experience on its platform to ensure that customers are able to find every kind of home for every kind of family.

 

“This is something that we’ve been planning forever since OLX merged with Carousell Philippines. We have taken in various feedbacks from our partners, developers, and users to make our property category even better,” Djon added.

 

Recognition of excellence in the property industry

 

For the first time ever, Carousell will also bring together the country’s most recognizable real estate developers and their finest developments in the Carousell Property Awards to be launched in March 2022. Among the nominees are some of the most celebrated real estate brands in the Philippines including Suntrust, Camella, Crown Asia, and Lumina, among other leading developers.

With over 6,000 cars listed on the platform as of February 2022,  Djon also expounded on Carousell’s recent tie-up with Premium Warranty Services Philippines, Inc. (PWSPI), the premier provider of used vehicle inspection and warranty services in the country, to launch the Carousell Autos Inspected and Warranty program which is designed to provide buyers of second-hand cars confidence and peace of mind when searching for vehicles in the Carousell platform.

 

“We recognize that knowing the real condition of the car is a legitimate concern for most buyers. Our partnership with PWSPI is a reflection of our commitment to promote quality listings on our platform. Carousell Autos Inspected and Warranty program will boost buyer’s trust in secondhand cars and will give them the assurance that the items listed on the platform are safe from hidden faults or defects,” Djon said.

 

Recognition for Pinoy entrepreneurs

 

Finally, since many Carousell users are micro-, small- and medium-size entrepreneurs, the company is also set to launch the Caroupreneur Awards that will recognize the outstanding achievements of Filipino entrepreneurs over the past year. To help the country recover, Loren Legarda advocates stricter implementation of Environment and Entrepreneurship laws

Senatorial candidate and Antique representative Loren Legarda said that stricter implementations on laws involving the environment and businesses involving small and medium enterprises can help the country recover from the pandemic.


During an interview on Politikscoop, Legarda was asked about three concerns candidates should address; environment, economy, and health. She cited some of the laws and bills she authored that were to address these concerns.

“Sa pandemic recovery kailangan po, una, alagaan ang kalikasan at kapaligiran. In my three terms I was able to author, co-author, and sponsor 10 environmental laws,” Legarda said.  “Mula sa karagatan, sa tubig, sa ating air quality, sa ating solid waste, ang mahalaga dito 'yong istriktong implementasyon at 'yung oversight function ng Congress, at 'yung pagpopondo ng mga batas na ito. Ito po'y papa-igtingin ko.”


“Pangalawa po, sa ekonomiya. Gaya po ng binanggit ko, sa micro enterprises and small business, na siyang 99% ng ekonomiya. The backbone of the Philippine economy is small business, kaya nga po 'yung DTI Shared Service facilities, 'yung DOLE Pangkabuhayan, 'yung sustainable livelihood program para sa 4P families – ito po'y maliliit na programa ng gobyerno na dapat ipagsama-sama sa isang Pangkabuhayan Law, para po taon-taon ito'y mapondohan for our pandemic recovery. And that's what I'm doing and will continue to do.”

She also cited the importance of the “One Tablet, One Student Act" which will  help many students for their online classes once enacted into law, and the institutionalization of social services for employment, like DOLE Tupad Cash for Work. 

Legarda also emphasized the importance of entrepreneurship playing a key role in the country’s economic recovery.


“Why is this important? Hindi naman po lahat kailangan maging empleyado. The others, may desire maging self-employed – magkaroon ng maliit na negosyo. Gaya doon sa amin sa Antique, hanggang kagabi kausap ko si Mario Manzano ng Bagtason Loomweavers. 'Yung mga lumang patadyong, ina-up-cycle nila. Yung kanilang mga bariw na weeds sa bundok ng Pandan, Antique ginagawang mga bags. So, may talento ang tao para kumita at gawin ang kanilang skills at natural resources na sustainable para magkaroon ng income. 'Yun ang purpose ng aking Barangay Employment and Entrepreneurship Service Office Bill, para po pa-igtingin natin ang grassroots economy,” she said.

Legarda, who is making a comeback attempt in the Senate, said that it’s important to go down ‘to the grassroots,’ which led her to relaunch the LOREN sa Bawat Barangay that she started in 1998.


“Sa pagbalik ko sa Senado, on my fourth term, I will focus on LOREN sa Bawat Barangay dahil ang ating pag-ahon mula sa pandemya ay dapat galing sa barangay level: barangay health workers, barangay nutrition scholars, hanggang sa paghihiwalay ng basura, hanggang sa growing your own food, hanggang sa pag-protekta ng ating mga ilog at karagatan,” Legarda said.  “Everything should be local, everything sa barangay level. Maski anong ganda ng batas na ginagawa namin sa national, kung hindi po ito naiintindihan ng lokal; kung hindi po ini-implement ito hanggang sa barangay level, ay sayang lang po ang ating magagandang isinulat na batas.”

“LOREN sa Bawat Barangay is not my name only. That is Livelihood, Opportunity to Raise Employment and Entrepreneurship Nationwide. Ito po'y nilulunsad nating muli para ipakita po ang kahalagahan ng local, not politics, but local sustainable governance."

Currently, Legarda places third in the latest Senatorial preference surveys.

foodpanda announces the most-ordered food items from its app in 2021

 

Leading online food delivery provider foodpanda announced the most-ordered food items from its app in 2021, with hamburgers and other fast-food staples coming out on top. 


The results, taken from data on thousands of foodpanda partner vendors across 150 cities and municipalities in the country, reveal that the top three most ordered food items from foodpanda in 2021 were hamburgers, fried chicken and spaghetti, items found on the menus of many fast-food restaurants and mom-and-pop stores on foodpanda’s platform. 

According to the company, the results serve as an indicator of Filipinos’ increasingly fast-paced and home-based lifestyles during the new normal.

 

Easy to order, quick to deliver

 

“Since 2020, as more people started working and attending school from home, we’ve seen how the demand for safe and quick food delivery has skyrocketed. And as Filipinos’ lifestyles and daily routines become more fast-paced than ever, they often rely on food that is easy to consume, even on the go,” said Daniel Marogy, managing director of foodpanda Philippines.

 

Marogy also explained that foodpanda customers’ most preferred time to order— lunch time, from 11AM up to 1PM— may be another indicator of Filipinos’ need for speed and convenience. “I think all of us has experienced this, even before the pandemic—you’re swamped at work, or busy with schoolwork or with the kids, and before you know it, lunch time comes and there is no food on the table,” he said. “So I think even more so than dinner time, when people might have a bit more time to prepare and cook food after their workday, it is that lunch time window during midday that people tend to need our services more.”

 

Pinoys’ taste buds are expanding

 

Even as many foodpanda customers chose fast food dishes as their go-to meals in 2021, Marogy also noted how consumers’ palates have also widened as more food choices became available for delivery. “We have really seen a remarkable increase in the number of restaurants, both big and small, that have joined us in the last two years, and it has resulted in a wide array of cuisines and dishes for customers to choose from,” Marogy remarked. “So we can say that Filipinos’ taste buds are expanding as well in terms of trying new things, whether it’s a new foreign dish, healthy meal alternatives, or simply a new restaurant that they haven’t tried.”

 

Quick commerce continues to be in demand

 

Marogy added that the company sees the demand for quick commerce—or the fast and convenient delivery of goods such as food and groceries— to remain, as many Filipinos continue to prioritize convenience as well as safety when it comes to necessities. “Even as restrictions are now loosening as cases continue to thankfully go down, we anticipate that many people will continue to need fast and safe delivery of goods,” Marogy said.
