Tetra Pak brings to light paper-based packaging alternatives

As the world commemorates Earth Day, leading food processing and packaging solutions company, Tetra Pak, calls attention to sustainable solutions that can play an important role in solving the world’s sustainability challenges, and puts the spotlight on paper-based carton packages that are already enabling greater access to safe food for people everywhere.

By 2050, demand for food is expected to soar as the global population is expected to grow by more than 25% according to the 2020 World Data Sheet. However, one of the greatest challenges of today is that the systems and processes involved in feeding the world account for more than one third of global greenhouse gas emissions per data from several policy-focused research centers including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

In the Philippines, major food and beverage manufacturers have collaborated with Tetra Pak as they move toward more sustainable ways of delivering their products to end consumers. John Jose, Marketing Director of Tetra Pak Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Indonesia, said that “In 2022, in the Philippines, over 330 million litres of food and beverages packed in Tetra Pak cartons reached Filipino consumers. This is a welcome trend that could fuel the development of a circular economy in the country and contribute to solving the country’s perennial solid waste management problems.”

As Tetra Pak believes that carton packages are one of the best ways to feed the future sustainably, it continues to embark on developing “the world’s most sustainable food package", solely made from responsibly sourced renewable or recycled materials. One of its innovative packaging solutions is Tetra Recart®. Viewed as the new home of food, Tetra Recart® is an innovative future-proof packaging solution for shelf-stable foods as it is a safe, practical, and convenient packaging that also features size-flexible lines for low factory footprint, space efficiency and in store waste.

In terms of environmental impact, Tetra Recart® is a more sustainable choice than can and glass packaging. From manufacturing to distribution to waste management, Tetra Recart® uses only about 40% of the energy and over the lifetime of the package, carbon emissions from Tetra Recart® are 81% lower than cans and glass.

Moreover, 69% of this carton packaging comes from a renewable responsibly managed resource – trees. Tetra Recart® carries the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) label. Lastly, its lightweight and rectangular shape allows for efficient transporting as six to ten times more empty Tetra Recart® can be loaded in a single truck compared to cans. The fewer trucks on the road, the better.

As such consumers, producers, and retailers can reimagine food that are traditionally canned or in glass jars, now in an alternative packaging that’s more sustainable and efficient to move, store, and use. Think ready to cook or eat vegetables like tomatoes and beans, snackable fruits, on-the-go-meals, soups, sauces, even pet food. With this creative innovation, opportunities are plenty.

“We continue to innovate for the future of food, aware that there are many challenges that we need to address. Whether it’s food or beverage, we make no compromises in ensuring safety and quality even as they are transported from place to place to bring their nourishing benefits accessible to many. The impact on people, businesses, and of course the planet are equally important.” John Jose concluded.

Tetra Pak believes that innovating better alternatives to how food and beverages are packaged and delivered across the world is key in maintaining the balance between keeping the world nourished and minimizing impact on the environment.

Traveling with Pets? Make Sure They’re Vaccinated Against Rabies

The Department of Health (DOH) regards rabies as a significant public health problem due to it being one of the most acutely fatal infections. It is responsible for 200-300 deaths of Filipinos annually.

To address this issue, pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim Philippines, through their Animal Health arm, collaborates with the government in observing March as Rabies Awareness Month (RAM). To encourage public participation, Boehringer Ingelheim has launched a RAM photo wall at NAIA Terminal 2 where pet owners can capture and share their photos on social media.

Dr. Apple Nagera, Head of Business Segment - Pets for Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc. emphasized the significance of raising awareness about rabies and the importance of vaccination for both pets and their owners. “Our RAM photo wall is an excellent opportunity for pet owners to showcase their love for their furry companions and to spread the word about this serious health issue. By using the hashtags #RabiesFreePHand #FunWithPetsAwaitWhenWeVaccinate, pet owners can help raise awareness about the importance of vaccination and show their support for our mission to make the Philippines rabies-free.”

Traveling with Pets? Make Sure They’re Vaccinated Against Rabies. Dr. Apple Nagera, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc. Head of Business Segment – Pets (Standing – 3rd from left), together with Mr. Sean Joselito Sunga, MIAA Terminal Manager (Standing – 4th from left) and Dr. Noverlee Calub, Chief of the Veterinary Quarantine Services NAIA (Standing – 5th from left) led the official inauguration of the Rabies Awareness Month (RAM) Photo Wall at the NAIA Terminal 2. The photo wall and the Facebook Photo Contest aim to promote Rabies disease awareness and to encourage people to vaccinate their pets against this deadly disease. Supporting the initiative were representatives from the Bureau of Animal Industry - Animal Health and Welfare Division, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), and the rest of the Veterinary Quarantine Services (VQS) NAIA Team.

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc. is committed to its partnership with the National Rabies Prevention and Control Program (NRPCP) and its attached agencies, the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI), the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Education (DepEd) in achieving the program aim of “Rabies-free na pusa't aso, kaligtasan ng pamilyang Pilipino”.

To join the campaign, participants can have their photo(s) taken with the RAM Photo Wall as the backdrop. Post it on their Facebook (FB) Wall with a caption on how they can help make the Philippines Rabies Free. The participants are reminded to set their posts to “Public” and to tag the FB pages of Boehringer Ingelheim Pets PH and the Veterinary Quarantine Services – NAIA, while using the hashtags #RabiesFreePH and #FunWithPetsAwaitWhenWeVaccinate. Ten (10) posts with the most positive reactions will be chosen per week throughout March, making a total of 40 lucky winners who will receive a travel essential kit for their pets.

The Philippines is one of the top 10 countries worldwide with a rabies problem.  Recent statistics from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) notes the increase of rabies cases in the country, from 1,038 in 2021 to 1,160 in 2022.  Human rabies also showed a rise, from 228 in 2021 to 305 cases in 2022.

Google for Education collaborated with Canvas8 to conduct a study on the future of education

Are our children ready for a future that no one has mapped out yet? As technology and AI are changing our present lives so fast, many could get left behind and unknowingly let opportunities pass them by.

How can we better equip our children to be ready when they come out of school and into the real world? To understand how education can help children be better leaders tomorrow, Google for Education collaborated with Canvas8, a global behavioral insights consultancy, to conduct a study on the future of education.

The big question was: How will the role of education evolve to meet the needs of the future? Google and Canvas8’s research spanned 24 countries from around the world to gain insights from 94 education thought leaders, policy experts, academic researchers, principals and teachers, and edtech leaders.

The Google for Education report reveals global trends on the future of education relating to Self, School, and System. Under Self, there’s a rising demand for global problem solvers, a change in skillsets required for work, and a shift to a mindset of lifelong learning. Under School, there’s a need to make learning personal, and trends of reimagining learning design and elevating the teacher. Lastly, for System, the trends found were upgrading learning environments, empowering educators with data, and a need to reevaluate student progress.

Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario at EDUtech Philippines 2023, sharing the company’s advocacy for accessible and progressive education

Here’s some trends and insights from the report:

1) Shifting to a lifelong learning mindset

Formal education typically ends at adulthood but learning takes place across different contexts or environments beyond one’s school years.

According to Martin Henry, research coordinator at Education International in Belgium, it’s becoming clearer that people need to be able to access education throughout their lives. There is a need to develop that interest in learning and that “learning to learn” ability in students too.

“Lifelong learning is not a new concept, but it does require a shift in the collective mindset,” said Bernadette Nacario, Google Philippines Country Director. “It requires to think of education not as a one-off period, but as an ongoing pursuit.

Lifelong learning as a concept is not limited to students. It applies to everyone. As lifelong learning is largely voluntary, a new learning culture must be cultivated, which instills ongoing motivation to learn.

2) Making learning personal

It’s not just about providing students with targeted, in-the-moment support, but also about making educational content feel relevant to the individual learner.

Personalization aims to increase student engagement and performance by creating responsive learning experiences that take into account each individual learner’s needs and interests. Studies show that when students better relate to what is taught in schools, it can have a positive impact on student engagement, enjoyment and performance.

“When we talk about learning, it’s good to acknowledge that learners differ in so many ways,” said Nacario.

“Advances in AI now make it possible to move at a speed and scale we’ve only imagined. Today, AI is capable of giving students 1:1, in-the-moment feedback on their work. Virtual learning companions will become even more capable of delivering instruction and challenging students to think through problems. In the past, it was completely unimaginable,” she added.

Google is optimistic about the potential for AI and other advanced technologies to empower people, benefit current and future generations, and serve the common good.

3) Re-evaluating student progress

While assessments play a pivotal role in the trajectory of a student’s life, “a lot of learners have capacities which are outside the things that we measure.”

“There’s frustration among parents because we are saying to a child, ‘you are lesser or better,’ but only judging upon a very, very, very small subset of things that are important in life,” said Claire Boonstra, founder of Operation Education in the Netherlands.

Nacario said, “At Google, we understand that assessments are a challenge. We want to give the teachers the need to effectively assess student progress.”

When teachers create assignments in Google Classroom, they have the ability to provide feedback by leaving comments on submitted assignments, or writing directly on student work. To help streamline the feedback process, Classroom automatically saves a teacher’s most-used feedback to a personalized and automated comment bank. In addition, teachers can draw or write on student work using the Classroom mobile app.

Google believes that lifelong learning should be both acceptable and accessible. Learning takes on many forms, whether a person is seeking answers to a question via Search or exploring learning content on YouTube, upskilling for a new role or pursuing a new field of work. In fact, according to the 2022 YouTube Impact Report, 93% of users report using YouTube to gather information and knowledge.

Education is now at our fingertips, technology allows us to follow our passion, explore new interests and gain new skill sets.  Google hopes to cultivate a society where people have the tools, resources and support that they need to pursue their personal potential — wherever they are in their learning journey.

Ken San Jose drops his very first single under Universal Records Philippines, Titled “Tago”

Ken San Jose drops his very first single under Universal Records Philippines. Titled “Tago”, this doesn’t need to be in hiding anymore this 2023.

According to the acclaimed dancer and now a recording artist, this groovy pop song was written by Filipino-Canadian producer August Rigo, widely known by youngsters as the one who co-wrote “Black Swan” by K-Pop group BTS. According to him, the song essentially tells that there’s no point in hiding someone’s relationship anymore. “Tago” is all about keeping things completely real.

Ken also shares that the song points him towards a direction where everything’s authentic and coming from the heart. “The song also applies to my life because I’m coming out with new music that’s keeping it real with what I want to do in my career and keeping things authentic moving forward,” he shares.

Ken’s clear and youthful vocals cascade over nicely produced electronic pop effects and powerful bass throughout the project. The song has some Filipino parts and although it’s somehow a challenge for Ken, he did those parts so well during recording.

August, on the other hand, expresses his excitement for this song because he thinks that it will bring out Ken’s impressive star quality more.

He tells, “It was a real pleasure to be working with Ken and Universal Records on his first release. Ken is a versatile creative. We wanted to give him (produce) something dark but also danceable to bring out Ken’s star qualities.  Ken and UMPH gave us some insight on his musical direction and I think we nailed this! I’m excited for everyone to hear this.”

Furthermore, Ken’s New York-based artist buddy Brian Tu worked together with Universal Records’ creatives to craft the song’s very artistic single artwork. Brian is known for making cool content with 88rising artists as well.

“Tago” is part of the latest Fresh Finds Philippines playlist on Spotify! Stream it while it’s hot!

"Invest in Our Planet," resonates with OPPO’s long-term investment in sustainable development

Earth Day is a significant occasion for people worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. This year's theme, "Invest in Our Planet," resonates with OPPO’s long-term investment in sustainable development.

Aligned with its mission “Technology for Mankind, Kindness for the World”, OPPO pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 across its operations. The OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC, OPPO's first self-built data center, exemplifies its dedication to integrating infrastructure and business innovations to reduce carbon emissions and make a long-term investment in preserving the Earth.

Using 100% renewable energy

In today's digital age, the demand for data storage, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing is constantly growing. The OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC, which commenced operations in late 2022, serves as OPPO's center for data security, computing, and algorithm innovation.

To minimize carbon emissions, the data center relies on 100% renewable energy sources. Since 2022, it has utilized 6.176 gigawatt-hours of renewable power, equivalent to a reduction of 3,600 tCO2e in emissions. Additionally, with the rainwater harvesting system for cooling circulation applied in the data center, about 30,000 tons of water will be saved annually.

OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC

Applying immersion cooling technology to enhance energy efficiency

Besides utilizing 100% renewable energy, the OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC continuously explores and adopts cutting-edge, low-carbon technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. A key breakthrough of this exploration is the research and implementation of immersion cooling technology for GPU server clusters.

Current data centers are estimated to consume up to 3% of the world’s total electricity, and one of the key culprits of this consumption is cooling systems[1], which is a significant amount of energy consumption. Efficient heat dissipation method has long been a challenge in the industry. Traditional data centers typically rely on mechanical cooling devices like fans and air conditioners, which consume extra energy and emit higher levels of CO2.

Immersion cooling technology for GPU server clusters is an innovation solution that OPPO employs to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. This technology entails submerging servers directly in a non-conductive liquid, which removes heat generated during operation without requiring active cooling from equipment like fans and air conditioners. The heated liquid circulates, cools, and returns to continue absorbing the heat. The reclaimed heat can be then repurposed in other areas, such as heating in the dormitory and hot water provision, substantially increasing energy efficiency. The adoption of immersion cooling technology leads to a 45% improvement in energy efficiency and an industry-leading data center power usage efficiency (PUE) as low as 1.15.

Immersion cooling technology is applied to improve energy efficiency

Digitalization Carbon Emission Management

As a global technology company operating in over 60 countries and regions, OPPO has also developed a carbon emission data platform, to analyze the data of carbon emission from OPPO’s self-build clouds services and servers worldwide.

Starting from Chinese market in July 2022, OPPO began issuing monthly Carbon Emission Bills caused by OPPO Cloud service to customers as part of a broader effort to foster a green intelligent engine.

OPPO continuously explores innovative solutions to contribute to sustainable development, and green data centers are just one of them. Protecting this Earth requires long-term strategy and commitment, and OPPO is doing our part as a global citizen to work towards a greener future.
