On December 3, a good twenty-two days before Christmas, reward yourselves with an early Yuletide gift. Reserve a seat or two for “The Big Big Show” 8 PM at The Theatre at Solaire.

It is a guaranteed fun --- no, make that stunning --- show that celebrates three women with big voices, big talents, and big hearts. You might think that it’s already been done but “The Big Big Show” marks the first time that three powerhouse songstresses Radha, Frenchie Dy, and Bituin Escalante are joining forces for one unforgettable night of music, stories, reminiscences and lessons all presented through lovely, impactful songs.

Frenchie says that the three of them have appeared in corporate shows and musical variety shows and individually have performed as front act for other artists but they have never shared the concert stage together with them as the main headliners. “We have rapport and chemistry,” she adds. “Totoo ‘yung closeness namin. Sa stage, hindi kami magsasapawan kundi magbibigayan.”

“We all love music,” gushes Radha. “We all love performing.” Now that the three versatile singers are together in one meticulously conceptualized show, expect magic, excitement, fireworks, and even sexiness.

All three --- Radha, Frenchie, and Bituin ---- have proven their musical chops in previous shows, forming a sort of sisterhood with their similarities. “Kaming tatlo,” explains Bituin, “we are all storytellers. We are seasoned. Pinanday ng buhay at mga karanasan.”

Viewers can look forward to Friday night fun watching Man With A Plan and The Odd Couple

Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry, who famously played roommates Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing, respectively, on Friends, will have a reunion of sorts when their shows start airing on their new home, RTL CBS Entertainment.

Matt LeBlanc’s new show Man With A Plan is set to premiere on Friday, October 28. The Odd Couple, starring Matthew Perry, airs its first episode for its third season last October 21.

Viewers can look forward to Friday night fun watching two different but humorous takes on the domestic challenges faced by modern guys.

Is ‘Daddy’ Fun Times really having fun?
Le Blanc’s new role in is a seeming departure from Joey Tribbiani’s womanizing as his equally hilarious role in Man With A Plan looks into the challenges that fatherhood pose.

In this new series, LeBlanc plays the role of Adam Burns, a contractor who finds himself taking care of his three kids when his wife, a stay-at-home Mom for 13 years goes back to work. While Adam wanted to call himself “Daddy Fun Times,” he discovers that parenthood is not always a smooth and easy ride.

As Adam gets to perform his new role as head of the household, he finds himself dealing with his kids’ internet addiction, untidiness, and the need for their wishes to be constantly indulged.
Among Adam’s misadventures is only having Listerine strips to offer when his kids look for snacks while on the way to school. Adam also forgets a universal sentiment among kids – that cleaning up and doing chores is no fun.

Adam also offers up some timeless fatherly advice. After his youngest daughter tells him that kindergarten frightens her, Adam says: “Honey, you should be worried – kids are mean. But just know, if you ever feel uncomfortable, just start swingin’ – a punch in the nose could be a real problem solver.”

Faced with these mounting pressures, can Adam really be the great father that his wife expects him to be?

For better or for worse
LeBlanc played a womanizer in Friends but it looks like he has passed on that role to his real-life buddy Matthew Perry, who is back on The Odd Couple as playboy sportswriter and radio sports host Oscar Madison. On the show, Oscar ends up living with his college friend, Felix Unger (played by Thomas Lennon), in a disorderly bachelor apartment, after his ex-wife divorces him for being thoughtless.

Going for a second shot at real love, Oscar copes with his new life together with Felix, a clean freak whose desire for a clean apartment puts him at odds with his divorcee friend. And even as Oscar begins dating other women, he never quite moves on from his previous marriage.
As Oscar and Felix try to get past their differences, will they finally find their dream romance by season three?

Catch The Odd Couple’s season three Every Friday, 9:30PM, and Man With A Plan’s series premiere on October 28, 9:00PM, exclusive on RTL CBS Entertainment.

"Be a Wall" against Dengue, get yourself vaccinated

When I was away from my kids 4 years ago to be exact. My son was hospitalized and diagnosed of Dengue fever. I was working abroad.  My eldest daughter called up and told me that my son had an on-and-off fever and a body malaise. I checked on them everytime I got my chance even at work. The son was hospitalized for 6 days and discharged after his temperature went stable. This was not the first time he contacted the disease, he got it when he was 7 months old,  in his teenage years and now in his 20s. I am praying though that he would not catch the dreaded disease again same for his siblings and your kids too. Just like any parent, I was praying for a dengue vaccine then which was on its way to be invented.  God is good because my prayer was answered today.

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of multinational pharmaceutical company and industry leader, launches “Be a Wall” campaign to mobilize the citizenry in a nation-wide campaign against the spread of dengue.

The campaign aims to build awareness among Filipinos parents and inform them how they can better protect themselves and their loved ones against the fastest-growing mosquito borne disease.  It also aims to educate them about the multi-pronged ways to prevent dengue infection – vector-control, disease information and vaccination.

Sanofi celebrity ambassadors Maricel Pangilinan, Paola Abrera and Tintin Babao graced the event together with Sanofi Pasteur executives, medical practitioners and media last October 25 at Novotel, Manila. The celebrity ambassadors shared their dengue story/experience to the media and ways on how to prevent it and "be a wall" against the disease.

Dengue remains to be one of the fastest-growing mosquito-borne diseases in the world and the Philippines ranks among the top-three countries affected by it.  Cebu City, for example, has just declared a state of calamity with over 5,821 dengue cases recorded as of October 2016.  Other areas considered as the most infected hotspots include Metro Manila or NCR, Region IV-A or CALABARZON, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, Central Luzon, and Western Visayas.

The Be a Wall campaign will also engage Filipinos by inviting them to connect, share their experience, ask questions, and join a community that’s building the nation’s resistance against dengue.  It aims to remind them of their role to step up the fight against the disease and to get involved by taking an active part in health matters that affect them and their families.

Maricel Laxa Pangilinan

“As responsible Filipino moms, let our voices be heard to raise awareness on dengue and let’s spread the good news that it is now a vaccine preventable disease. Each of us can now be a wall against dengue,”according to multi-awarded actress, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan.

Paolo Abrera

“It’s great news that there is a dengue vaccine now available in the market. As a public affairs anchor, I’m on top of the news everyday and it’s very alarming to note the rising dengue cases from different regions of our country. It’s definitely a relief for Filipino parents out there especially a father like me to be able to visit our doctors today and have our kids vaccinated,” – Paolo Abrera.

Celebrity mom, Christine Bersola-Babao also expresses her support for the dengue vaccine. “I am a mother of two and I want my kids (family) to be safe from life-threatening diseases like dengue. Aside from the vector control measures that we have been doing, we really need a new tool that will help us in fighting the epidemic and vaccination is the answer. I encourage other Filipino moms to ask their doctors about dengue vaccination today,” she shared.

What's in your chicken? #KnowTheWholeStory

For most of us, little to no thought goes into how our food got onto our plates.

Let’s start with your typical chicken: we go to the grocery, buy the plumpest frozen poultry we can find, then take it back to the kitchen to be fried, stewed, or roasted for tonight’s dinner. Simple enough, right?

Food is a source of nutrition, and therefore ingredients should be wholesome and nourishing. Knowing the whole story of where your food comes from may make you want to reconsider your choices.

Hidden dangers

Conventional food production techniques are designed to boost yield so farms can deliver more meat and more crops. ‘Quantity’, however, isn’t necessarily synonymous to ‘quality’.

In the case of crops, a number of synthetic pesticides are applied to fields to eliminate insects, fungi, and rodents so that farms can stock supermarkets with smooth, almost flawless-looking fruits and vegetables.

Sadly, these toxic substances are absorbed by the plants, which in turn introduce harmful chemicals to the food that goes into our bodies. That doesn’t take into account how pesticides poison harmless organisms living on farmlands, while also spreading to nearby bodies of water, grazing fields, and human settlements through wind and runoff.

Many farms today also think little of their methods when it comes to raising chickens for their eggs and meat. Apart from being confined in tiny, cramped cages throughout their lives, these animals are fed with a diet they don’t normally eat like soy, and are given antibiotics to keep them alive amidst unsanitary and inhumane living conditions.

Additionally, egg-laying hens are constantly exposed to artificial lighting and are injected with hormones so they produce as many eggs as they can instead of letting them do so within the means of their natural cycle.

This treatment is not only cruel and against animal welfare standards. Because of all the drugs pumped into the chickens, their meat and eggs are saturated with harmful substances that endanger consumers. Their waste also becomes contaminated with hazardous toxins that threaten human health and the environment when disposed.

Sustainable and healthy

Food is critical not only to our health but also the welfare of our planet. If we truly want us to live full, healthy lives, it’s vital that we change the narrative of what we eat.

As consumers, we can do this by supporting companies that practice sustainable and humane farming. Healthy Options, for instance, ensures food quality by sourcing ingredients from farms that only use natural growing methods.

Healthy Options also ensures that all their chickens are able to roam freely in clean, spacious, and weather-protected grounds so they can forage for bugs and worms—organisms that chickens are designed to eat—on top of organic and natural grain feed.

Unlike factory-farmed chickens, these birds also get to enjoy the light of day while living life as intended by nature. With living conditions maximized for good health and proper egg production, they don’t have to be artificially stimulated or given drugs.

The result is healthy and happy chickens that people can eat without worry.

Dengvaxia: The world's first anti-dengue vaccine

In April, the Department of Health (DOH) launched the first school-based dengue immunization program on Monday with around 250 Grade 4 students of Parang Elementary School in Marikina City.

The DOH chose Grade 4 students from the National Capital Region, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon four regions with the highest number of dengue cases.

The vaccine called Dengvaxia, took scientists 20 years to develop and is considered the world’s first anti-dengue vaccine, and the Philippines is the first country where it is commercially available.

Dengue is a high-motile and ongoing public health concern in the Philippines. The first known epidemic of severe dengue or dengue hemorrhagic fever anywhere in the world was recorded in Manila in 1953.1 By the mid 19705 severe dengue had become a leading cause of hospitalization and death among children in the region 2 Between 2004 and 2010, the Philippines experienced the seventh highest number of dengue cases in the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2013, DOH reported 204,906 cases of dengue, the highest number recorded since the establishment of the National Dengue Prevention and Control Program in 1993. More than 200,000 dengue cases were reported in the Philippines in 2015, 80,000 more than were reported in 2014. In both September and October 2015, the number of reported cases rose above the epidemic threshold. d

Although the number of reported dengue cases slightly decreased in 2014, the 2015 data suggest an increasing trend in cases in the coming years. Recent data gathered by the Department of Health from January to 24 September this year shows an increase of 11.5 percent year on year across the country, with t otal dengue Infections at 142,247 compared to 127,525 last year and 604 recorded fatalities.

Based on Philippine surveillance data collected between 2011 and 2015, an average of 220 dengue cases were reported in the country every day.8 In 2015, almost 50% of reported cases came from three most urbanized regions Region 3 (17.6%), Region 4 (17.3%), and the National Capital Region (12.6%).9 Cases stemming from all four serotypes of dengue were reported in 2015.

Disease burden: US$345 million per year

The economic burden of dengue in the Philippines is substantial. A study published in 2015 estimated that between 2008 and 2012. clinically diagnosed dengue cases in the Philippines were associated with a direct medical cost (in 2012 US dollars) of $345 million annually. The study calculated the average cost of treatment per case to be $409, representing 16% of the Philippines’ 2012 per capita GDP. Sixty-live percent of cases were treated in inpatient hospitals, representing 90% of direct costs.

In addition to dengue‘s burden on a household, the illness can adversely impact a country’s economy through a loss of productivity caused by the illness and pre-mature death, increased healthcare costs and a possible reduction in tourism.

DENGVAXIA THE FIRST DENGUE VACCINE (Source)

Sanofi Pasteur’s vaccine is the culmination of over two decades of scientific innovation and collaboration, as well as 25 clinical studies in 15 countries around the world. Over 40,000 volunteers participated in the Sanofi Pasteur dengue vaccine clinical study program (phase I, II and III), of whom, 29,000 volunteers received the vaccine. Dengvaxia successfully completed phase III clinical studies in 2014 to evaluate the primary objective of vaccine efficacy.

Long-term follow-up studies of the vaccine, recommended by WHO for all dengue vaccines in development, are currently ongoing. Additional pooled efficacy and integrated safety analyses from the 25-month Phase III efficacy studies and the ongoing long-term studies, respectively, were recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine reconfirming the vaccine’s consistent efficacy and longer-term safety profile in populations 9 years of age and older. In a pooled efficacy analysis in volunteers aged 9-16 who participated in the two Phase III 25-month efficacy studies, Dengvaxia was shown to reduce dengue due to all four serotypes in two-thirds of the participants. Furthermore, this pooled efficacy analysis showed that Dengvaxia prevented 9 out of 10 cases of severe dengue and 8 out 10 hospitalizations due to dengue in this age group.

Dengvaxia is the first vaccine licensed for the prevention of dengue in the world. First doses of the vaccine have been produced and full scale production capacity will be reaching 100 million vaccine doses annually.

Seasonality and global climate change

Dengue has become a year-round threat in the Philippines. However, data suggests that the number of dengue cases increases one to two months after the onset ofthe rainy season, resulting in a peak of dengue cases between July and November each year.13

The Philippines is severely affected by extreme weather events and is vulnerable to the effects of climate change Vector-borne diseases like dengue may be particularly sensitive to both periodic tiuctuations and sustained changes in global and local climates.“ Additionally, a study examining data from eight Asian countries including the Philippines over 18 years revealed a strong correlation between regional dengue epidemics and elevated temperatures associated with El Nino.

In a recent vaccine cost-effectiveness study performed by Professor Hilton Lam of the UP-National Institute of Health, a nationwide annual routine vaccination of nine year olds starting in 2016 would lead to an estimated 24.2 reduction in dengue cases in the country over a five year period. This would translate to 775,053 avoided cases of dengue, 502,000 avoided hospitalizations, 22,010 avoid deaths and almost P21 billion in avoided cost to society.
