Crib launches first self-titled album at The Music Hall

Rock can mean many different things to different folks but I only realized just how many different kinds of rock music as I was writing this article.

Now I know about new wave, punk, alternative, classic, grunge, indie rock, , brit rock, hardcore, and even a bit of punk rock and heavy metal, but I only realized that some of my favorite songs actually belonged to a subgenre called AOR or Adult Oriented Rock.

Doesn’t sound familiar?

Well if you’ve heard of Asia, Boston, Foreigner, Journey, Survivor and the hit songs of Toto—that is exactly what AOR is all about.

AOR first emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as an amalgamation of Rock, Hard Rock and Progressive Rock. It is characterized by a rich, layered sound, slick production and a heavy reliance on pop/rock hooks, which led to its huge popularity in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

And now AOR is making a comeback at the OPM scene nonetheless with the new band called Crib.
Crib,  the newest band to hit the music scene, recently launched their first self-titled album last July 6 at the Metrowalk Music Hall.

The band was actually formed 8 years ago and their music influences are songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s with the likes of Toto , Stevie Wonder, Fra Lippo Lippi.

Its also the reason why they decided to call themselves Crib explaining that most of them were still babies or toddlers when their favorite songs first played on air.

The  six-member band is composed of TJ Sarvida, a young entrepreneur-turned-Crib's frontman. Mike Caleda, on keyboards and vocals,  Dard Enriquez, on lead guitars, Mark Decena, on bass, Rancis de Leon on sax, and Bogs Bautista, on drums.

Mike Caleda, composed most  of the songs in their album "Crib" including the carrier single is "Di Inaasahan".

But at the media launch, it was their song "Ibang Araw Na Lang" that actually grabbed my attention, which I think is also the most catchy and easiest to recall. It was easily my personal favorite. I love how they arranged the song and Rancis classical take on sax. It reminded me of Side A, and showcases their jazz influence.  Their songs are now available on Spotify.

The band is also characterized by a rich layered sound slick production and a heavy reliance on jazz and pop rock hooks. Crib's music are almost soul-driven. catchy and very often includes harmonized vocals.  The songs are more melodic than straight ahead the regular hard rock but not as nearly as light rock. Their edgy and classy sound made them more distinct than other bands today.

About the band
TJ Sarvida, a young entrepreneur-turned-Crib's frontman. TJ has joined in some of ABS CBN and GMA‘s singing competitions making him a veteran in that field.

Meanwhile, most of the songs in the album were composed by its keyboardist and also on vocals, Mike Caleda. He started playing the piano at age three. Since then until now, his skills made him work with top singers and musicians in the country as well as a veteran in rapping and battle emceeing.

The band's lead guitarist, Dard Enriquez, on the other hand, finished Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Major in Marketing) in Philippine School of Business Administration. He helps in managing the business of his family while he plays in the group.

Another guitar player in the band is Mark Decena, took up and finished Advertising in University of Sto. Tomas. He is a graphic artist during the day while a bassist during their gigs at night.

The band's saxophonist, Rancis de Leon, has worked with both international and local artists as a sessionist. He also teaches in University of the Philippines College of Music. Rancis also finished his music course in the same university.

Completing the band is drummer Bogs Bautista who is also a Physical Therapist by profession. He has also worked with big artists in the country as a sessionist.

Crib is under Glass Onion Entertainment. The same management who handles Paolo Santos, Pido Lalimarmo, Thor Dulay and Jimmy Bondoc with Al Henson as the team's manager.
