World Vision distributes life-saving aid to typhoon-affected families in Bicol region

Five days after Typhoon Goni left the Bicol region in shambles, World Vision has started its relief distribution of life-saving items to the families affected.

On November 6, the organization initially reached 1,400 families in the coastal communities in Tiwi, Albay Province, the typhoon’s second landfall area.

Hygiene Kits consisting of toothbrush, toothpaste, bath and laundry soaps, sets of underwear for children and adults, and many more are provided to families so they can maintain proper hygiene while staying in the evacuation centers.

The families also received nonfood items like mosquito nets, plastic mats, fleece blankets and collapsible water containers to make their stay in the evacuation centers bearable. Tarpaulin and rope will also allow the families to set up temporary shelter.

“Thank you for giving us these donations especially the shelter kits. It rained hard last night and we were soaked wet including the children because we just used debris and old tarpaulin to shelter us. This new tarpaulin will be very helpful,” shares Mary Rose, 32 years old and a mother of three. 5-year-old Ashley also shared that she immediately used the toothbrush once her family received the hygiene kit because it had been days since she brushed her teeth after the typhoon washed away their belongings.

“World Vision is concerned with the families affected by Typhoon Goni. Today, we are able to serve them by providing life-saving relief items that will help them cope with their stay in the evacuation centers. We are hoping to serve more families these coming days,” shares Rommel Fuerte, World Vision Development Foundation National Director.
