Teen Star Alexa Ilacad is BUM’S Newest Endorser

Fashion can be a form of self-expression and a representation of one’s personality, more so for today’s teens who are brimming with youthful enthusiasm and are in the process of discovering themselves. A clothing brand known for catering to the young segment of fashionistas, BUM keeps up with their market’s ever-evolving tastes and preferences not only by launching trendy casual garbs but by also providing them with new role models and style icons they can take cues from.

BUM has always been the brand of choice of both up-and-coming and most sought-after teen celebrities, like ABS-CBN’s Nash Aguas, Ella Cruz and Jane Oineza, and GMA-7’s Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix (who are collectively known as the “Black Army”).But just when you thought this in-demand style squad cannot get any better, BUM has tapped another well-loved young star, who embody the vitality and versatility of the brand.

Last May 28, Goin’ Bulilit alum and Luv U mainstay Alexa Ilacad was launched as BUM’s latest celebrity endorser in a fun-filled event held at the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City. This 15-year-old fashionista proves to be a perfect fit for the brand because she’s the adventurous type whose style can go from girly-girl to hip and rugged.

“Super happy ako to be a BUM endorserkasi I can show my versatility through BUM. Sobrangastig ng mgadamitnila. Kahitlagiakongpa-girly in colorful and bright outfits, favorite ko din ’yung dark colors kasimahiligakosarock eh;minsannga feeling korakistaako eh! With the clothes from BUM, I can enjoy and show the best of both worlds,” Alexa says.

That said, her favorite #OOTD-worthy BUM pieces likewise vary from the colorful girly dresses to the rocker-chic hoodies and skull-print tees to the comfy and stretchable jeans—all useful in the various roles she plays as an actress, student and normal teenager.

Alexa’s first campaign shoot with BUM is for the “Black2School” collection, wherein she got to work with the brand’s other ambassadors, which include Nash, her onscreen partnerand the other half of “NLex” love team.

Since it was her first time to shoot an edgy and fierce campaign, Alexa shared that Nash helped calm her nerves as he tried to make the shoot feel lighter and more fun for her. She shares, “Masaya mag-work ’pag meron kang ka-close. Si Nash, nakatulong talaga siya sa akin sa shoot kasi naging mas masaya ang first shoot ko with BUM.”

With the recent success of Nash and Alexa’s last TV show, Bagito, the NLex love team (which started in Goin' Bulilit) has gained more fans, who cannot wait until the two’s next project. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the couple tees soon to be launched by BUM, whose campaign will star this cute duo.A sneak peek of the collection of cute his-and-hers matching tops by BUM, with cool rib cage, skull and graphic prints, was seen in the brand's last "Black2School" collection; the campaign showed Nashgarbed ina blue roundneck statement tee that says "I Stole Her Heart" and Alexa clad in a matching pink round neck statement tee whose print reads "So I am Stealing His Heart."

It hasn’t been long since Alexa did her first BUM campaign shoot, and now she’s already looking forward to the next. While that is in the works, Alexa has taken it upon herself to give her fellow young girls a bunch of style inspirations by posting occasional #OOTDs on her Instagram account (which currently has about 272,000 followers). “Ang dami ko na ngang #OOTD na naka-BUM. Excited na ako i-post,” she quips. Now, girls, that’s something worth double tapping! BUM’s “Black2School” is available at BUM boutiques and leading department stores nationwide.

Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"

Academy Award-winning actor Eddie Redmayne has been cast as Newt Scamander in Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-anticipated wizarding world adventure “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Redmayne will play J.K. Rowling’s creation Newt Scamander, the Wizarding World’s preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures, ultimately leading to his penning the Hogwarts School textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

In making the announcement, Silverman said, “Eddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today’s most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors. We are thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable performance as Newt Scamander, the central character in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

Making her screenwriting debut on the film, J.K. Rowling has developed the character of Scamander and his primer—taken from her globally beloved Harry Potter series—to further explore the unique wizarding world she has crafted in print and bring it to life on screen.

David Yates, who directed the last four “Harry Potter” films and will direct “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” stated, “Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity. I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in J.K. Rowling’s wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way.”

The film is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster “Harry Potter” features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the “Harry Potter” films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise.

Eddie Redmayne won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2014 biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His stunning portrayal of Stephen Hawking in that film also brought him Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards. In 2012, Redmayne starred as Marius in Tom Hooper’s screen adaptation of the hit musical “Les Misérables,” with Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. In 2010, Redmayne won a Tony Award for his performance in “Red,” which marked his Broadway debut.

On screen, he next stars in Hooper’s true-life drama “The Danish Girl,” due out this November.

Warner Bros. Pictures has slated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.

The High Cost of Health with Philam

A wise man once said, “If you think wellness is expensive, then try illness.” This particular quote sums up how one leading doctor in the Philippines’ Lifestyle Medicine sector feels about today’s society.

Dr. Johann Kim Mañez first started his medical career training as an Internal Medicine specialist. He noticed that patients affected by critical illnesses who were prescribed essential potent medication would soon fall ill to additional side effects. In order to combat the new complications, more medications would be prescribed. This would only increase the potential of getting even more side effects, thereby increasing the need for more medications, creating an endless costly loop of healthcare.

Seeing that the treatments and surgical procedures can easily cost patients hundreds of thousands, if not millions of pesos without assurance of gaining back health, he decided that he wanted to attack chronic diseases at their root, and treat the cause of diseases rather than their symptoms.  As a Lifestyle Medicine practitioner, Dr. Mañez now advises patients on how to improve their routines; this includes guidance on their diet and an increased rate of their physical activity.

“Today’s society consumes an inordinate amount of unhealthy food. Humans were not made to survive on the diet that the general public is on nowadays,” said Dr. Mañez. He continued, “In order to maintain optimal health, we should learn how to avoid everything that harms our health including animal-based, junk and processed foods, and consume in moderation, everything that is good for us.” Dr. Mañez’s work as a Lifestyle Medicine practitioner has influenced his patients to start living healthy lifestyles, successfully ridding them of painful symptoms and underlying disease processes.
Sadly, even the physically fit and vigorous members of society have been struck by critical illnesses whether hereditary or caused by unhealthy lifestyle. Worst of all is that some of these critical illnesses are past the point that healthy lifestyles can no longer cure.

True to Dr. Mañez’s observations, these critical illnesses can lead down a costly loop of prescription medications and treatments. It is indeed a crying shame when those who have worked countless days sacrificing their health in hopes of providing a better future for their loved ones, fall ill. The savings they have accumulated from their hard work and dedication must be utilized to help them recover in times of health setbacks.

Considering this, Filipinos are now in need of help to brace for some of the worst events that may occur in their lives. To help financially prepare Filipinos for some of life’s unexpected turns, Philam Life recently launched Health Invest Plus, the company’s flagship health product.

Philam Life’s Health Invest Plus provides lump-sum cash benefits when diagnosed with any of 56 covered major critical illnesses and 11 covered early stage conditions– the most among unit-linked plans in the market. Unit-linked products are life insurance and investment plans-in-one where the benefits are linked to the returns of a chosen investment fund.

Once diagnosed with any of such critical illnesses, the plan holder is also spared from paying future premium payments. If the plan holder is diagnosed with a covered early stage critical condition, 25 percent of the critical Illness coverage will be given in advance.

Unlike most other critical illness plans, Health Invest Plus can be availed even by those who are already up to 65 years old. The critical illness coverage will still be in effect until they are 75, an age when most are in retirement and in need of greater medical care. Since Health Invest Plus is a unit-linked plan, a portion of premium payments are invested, allowing one to grow a Health fund which can be used for health maintenance or other costs during one’s later years. The plan also provides cash benefits for accidental injuries or disabilities and loss of life, providing comprehensive coverage for policyholders.

It is always good to hope for the best, but it’s even better to be prepared for the worst. Insurance plans such as Health Invest Plus can make a significant difference in a patient’s life.

Uratex Premium Mattress Collection helps address sleep deprivation

How many sleeping hours do we need in order to get the desired energy the following morning?  Loss of sleep takes toll in our everyday lives, it makes us cranky and stressful. We tend to eat more and crave for sugar. The stress seems to pile up when we deprive ourselves to sleep. According to study, adults need to sleep 7 1/2 to 9 hours to be productive in the morning. Or we have to nap at daytime to fill in the gap. We must also try to consider the bed or mattress that we lie our body in, it is one factor that should give us a better sleep.

Uratex recently launched Uratex Premium Mattress Collection last May 28 at SM Megamall Atrium. Ms. Pia Guanio hosted the event with guest celebrities Solenn Heussaff, Ellen Adarna, Vanessa Matsunaga, Ariella Arida,  Anton del Rosario,  Boys Night Out and Chef Lau shared their sleeping habits and tips to the public.

As a matter of fact according to Dr. Deborah A. Bernardo, Head of the Comprehensive Sleep Disorders Center and Chief of the Section of Neurology at St. Luke's Medical Center, "Insomnia is the most common sleep problem. Shift work disorders are getting more common because of the BPO, entertainment and media industry. Obstructive sleep apnea, which manifests as loud snoring and stopping of breathing during sleep, is also very frequently unrecognized."

Uratex, the leader in providing the best sleep solutions has been supporting the advocacy on the importance of a good night’s sleep. Through tie ups with the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine and with the studies of Dr. Deborah A. Bernardo.

"Sleep is as important as diet and exercise for good health. It is necessary for clear thinking and memory formation, protection of the body against diseases and repair of cells and tissues of the body." Dr. Bernardo elaborates more.

This is the reason why finding the right mattress is important.

Uratex constantly innovates the way people sleep by using the latest in technology, the best design, and luxurious materials. This is called Sleep Science, and it is this discipline that is behind the creation and design of Uratex Premium Mattress Collection.

Uratex Premium Mattress Collection features the best materials for soothing sleep. A variety of state-of-the-art foam are used in creating each mattress, including Senso Memory foam, latex foam, and Hydragel foam. Used in combination with premium pocket springs, Tencel fabric and 3D spacer fabric, you are assured of quiet sleep at the end of the day.

Uratex Premium Mattress has crafted four unique mattress collections that take into account each person’s needs. Each mattress was designed to specifically fit your body’s needs for a more personalized sleep solution.

The Perfect Serenity Collection is the very definition of perfection. The combination of innovative foam and fabric technologies provides tranquil sleep the moment your body touches this mattress. The advanced 3D spacer fabric supplies ample ventilation throughout its surface for constant airflow for a cool, fresh feeling as you sleep. It also ensures that your mattress is clean and fresh even with constant use.

The Senso Memory collection utilizes memory foam that conforms to your body shape to evenly distribute pressure for a more comfortable sleep. The Visco-elastic foam used in this mattress remembers the shape of your body for a personalized sleep experience. The use of Tencel fabric in the main panels also keeps the mattress cool and fresh as you sleep.

The Premium Touch collection combines high performance pocket springs and world-class materials. Each individually wrapped pocket spring follows the shape of your body, even as you turn on your bed. To add comfort, the mattress is topped with natural latex foam to relieve the body’s pressure points. It is covered with Tencel fabric making it soft and smooth to the touch.

For those requiring better support as they sleep, the Orthocare collection supports the body’s key pressure points and keeps them aligned to reduce aches when you wake up in the morning. The inter-connecting cell structure in high-quality foam distributes pressure equally and evenly, letting your body feel relaxed while you sleep. It also uses 3D spacer fabric to keep your mattress cool and fresh, while Tencel fabric adds a soft and smooth feel.

All mattresses under the Uratex Premium Collection are treated with Sanitized, a technology that keeps mattresses free from bacteria or microbes. It protects your body, so you sleep on a mattress that is clean and comfortable.

Uratex Premium Mattress, the leader in the premium bedding industry in the country, and Our Home, the leading home and furniture store, collaborate by providing the public a chic and modern venue for finding the right mattresses for their homes.

Dindo Medina, Uratex Corporate Sales Director, says the partnership between Uratex and Our Home will provide a venue where the public can find sleep solutions that will help improve the quality of their lives.

GSK partners with VMV Hypoallergenics to spread awareness on cervical cancer

I had a friend who died of cervical cancer. She was in her 30s when we first met. She was healthy to begin with, had an active lifestyle,  not the one who would get the dreaded disease. No signs of pain whatsoever, until she complained of severe pelvic pain in her early 50s and died 3 years after. She was diagnosed Stage 4.  I was just speechless. There was a time I asked if she had her pap smear done annually. She told me she never had after giving birth to her youngest,  because she felt well and that she had no time for OB Gyne check up and she was busy with children and work. If she had diagnosed and treated earlier, she would have live longer. With all our busy schedules, always find time to visit your OB Gyne, have a regular pap smear and ask for a cervical vaccine.

GSK Philippines partners with VMV Hypoallergenics in raising cervical cancer awareness last May 28 at Isabela Ballroom, Makati Shangri-la. and help women put on their power pout against cervical cancer. The campaign was hosted by MTV VJ TV Host Ms. Andi Manzano and graced by cervical cancer survivor guests and doctor panels from GSK. I learned a lot about the informative talk, how at an early stage you can get infected by HPV(human papilloma virus) and made it to a full blown cervical cancer.

The Power Over Cervical Cancer campaign urges Filipinas to realize that they are empowered—that they can do something to prevent the disease from happening to them, so they don’t miss out on a colorful life ahead or leave their loved ones behind.

Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop and spread in the cervix, the entrance between the vagina and the uterus.  The human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus, is the necessary cause of cervical cancer. It has been shown that 99.7 percent of cervical cancer patients are positive for HPV infection.  It is also estimated that up to 80 percent of women will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.

While HPV is primarily transmitted via sexual intercourse, skin-to-skin genital contact is also a recognized mode of transmission. , ,  Lifestyle changes can help prevent the development of cervical cancer, such as being conscientious about one’s sexual activities. Beyond regular consultations and pap smears by your OB-GYN, vaccines that protect against cancer-causing HPV are also now readily available.

A risk regardless of age
Based on a study of 307 women in Ontario, the incidence of cancer-causing HPV infection is actually highest at the young ages of 15-19.  The World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (WHO-SAGE) on Immunization reiterates the importance of getting young girls protected through HPV immunization before their first exposure to HPV (i.e. before sexual contact), as young as 9 years old. ,

What about older women? The risk of persistent infection with cancer-causing HPV (which is necessary for cervical cancer to develop) increases with age, and is highest when a woman is over 66 years old.  Thus, screening is recommended starting age 21 to detect cervical abnormalities that precede actual cervical cancer.  Vaccination remains to be recommended for older women to prevent new HPV infections.

Purple lips against cervical cancer

“Cancer is quite a distant concept for women who are well. What might be more important to them is keeping up with the latest trends, especially in fashion and beauty. The lipstick is a woman’s own—when she wears it, she makes a statement about herself. Through this partnership with VMV, we hope to drive women to make a statement against cervical cancer,” says Mark Castillo, GSK product manager.
Jacklyn Remo, assistant marketing manager for VMV Hypoallergenics, supports the movement: “We are fully committed toward this partnership with GSK Philippines. At VMV Hypoallergenics, we promise the safest, most proven effective care on the planet—and that extends to beauty. This unique combination of science, wellness and beauty means we also strongly stand for advocacies that help women, their health and happiness.”

JOIN THE MOVEMENT NOW—take a photo of yourself wearing VMV Hypoallergenics’ Tutu or Chorus Line lipstick (or a photo of you holding your kiss mark from the lipstick) and post it on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtags #PowerPout and #PowerOverCervicalCancer!

A health service message brought to you by GSK. For further information on cervical cancer, please consult your doctor.

Gerry's "refreshes" Megamall branch, brings Old Manila to new Aseana Branch

Ambiance, soft lighting and a relaxed atmosphere plus great filipino food makes me want to visit Gerry's over and over again. If I want to spend some time and enjoy my food, Gerry's SM Mega Strip B is now in my priority list of restaurant to visit.

Gerry's Grill Mega Strip B has that relaxed vibe feel to it, plus it offers function room for private party and or meetings. My favorite dish at Gerry's is their Beef Kare-kare and Grilled Pusit, the creamy and thick sauce with slight peanutty sweetness compliments the Grilled pusit. They are simply the best partner to go with their ripe mango shake.

Gerry's invited bloggers to take a peek at the newly revamped Gerry's Mega Strip B last May 28. The homey cozy feel makes you want to stay longer.

“We have set a new standard to ensure that we provide customers not only the best Filipino dishes but fast, efficient service and a cozy ambiance. We want diners to have that experience of being in a restaurant where they will feel relaxed, and comfortable,” said Francis Villaluz, Gerry’s Senior Marketing Manager.

"It’s important that guests feast not only with what they eat but with what they see inside the restaurant," he added. That’s the principle behind the two restaurants' new looks.

At Gerry’s Megamall, the main wall of the dining area is decked with foliage, which is installed with a fully automated water system to nourish them.  “The lighting is calibrated in a way that it has the same effect as sunlight. Nothing could be more refreshing,” explains Villaluz.

They served the best filipino appetizer food like sizzling kangkong with roaster garlic on top, green mango salad with pork, fried tilapia with savory eggplant, tuna sisig (my new favorite), and grilled stuffed bangus. and sinigang na hipon!

Green Mango Salad--  p135

Meantime, the 250-seater Aseana branch sports an updated version of Old Manila surrounded by balconies, as well as, huge windows of varying designs. Chairs are a mix and match design which is a first for us  “We want guests to feel that they are enjoying their favorite Gerry’s dishes with family and friends in a huge patio,” Gerry’s senior marketing chief said.

“Remember the old joke about a guest wanting to take out “ambiance” so that they can slash the total bill? We're the same Gerry’s where you can enjoy your favorite comfort food – Kare Kare, Crispy Pata, Grilled Pusit, and many others. We’ve put a premium on ambiance but our prices remain the same. We are very affordable,” explains Villaluz.

Gerry’s currently has 71 branches nationwide. It has two branches in the US and Singapore, and soon to be two in Qatar as well.

Gerry’s Group of Companies has expanded its brand concepts – Gerry’s Plus, Ramen Sora, Sweet Chili, and Kusina ng Gerry’s. Yakitori Binchotan is set to be launched next month in Cebu.

Who will be the next Filipino Runway Pride at Project Runway Season 4?

I got a first glimpse of  15 designers' creation  for Project Runway Philippines Season 4 last May 27 at Green Sun, Makati. Their design was presented in a mini fashion show hosted by Cerah Hernandez and Project Runway Supermodel host-judge Tweetie de Leon Gonzales. International fashion designer Josie Natori graced the event with fashion luminary and runway mentor Jojie Lloren.

ETC launches the fourth season of Project Runway Philippines with 15 new, up-and-coming designers who have come from all over the Philippines – from Cebu to Tuguegarao, Davao to Koronadal, Samar to Quezon City – in the hopes of becoming the next global Filipino designer to conquer international fashion.

Jose Joy Chicano is my personal favorite among the 15 designers, I loved his deconstructed white and black ensemble it already drew attention from the audience.

Supermodel and fashion icon Tweetie De Leon-Gonzalez returns to the runway as host and judge, describing the fourth season of Project Runway Philippines as unexpected, fun, and more cut-throat than ever.

Famed A-list designer Rajo Laurel returns to the judges’ seat with the aim to help produce a new breed of young designers who can make it both here and abroad by sharing his knowledge about the business side of fashion.

Fashion and beauty expert Apples Aberin returns with her no-holds-barred comments, expecting to see vision, technical skills, a unique point of view, and a whole lot of drama.

Fashion luminary and runway mentor Jojie Lloren returns to the show with one goal in mind – to find the best designer in the history of Project Runway Philippines. Working closely with this year’s contenders, Jojie reveals that this season is probably the most exciting one ever.

From the sewing room down to the runway, fun, drama, surprises, and tough challenges await as contestants have their skills scrutinized, their creativity challenged, and their sensibilities tested in the search for a designer who can make it to the top.
