Be proud of being an online seller, says Skin Magical owner Ghie Pangilinan

Bulakbol yan nung college, naging housewife at ngayon online selling ang ginawa.”

Those were the words that were planted in Ghie Pangilinan'mind when she started her own online business. Her skeptics did not believe that she was going to succeed. That was in 2013. Seven years later, Pangilinan overcame all obstacles and is now the Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Skin Magical, one of the best distributors of beauty products in the Philippines. To date, Skin Magical had over 200 distributors and over 50,000 resellers nationwide and even abroad.

My business has really grown and I am proud to say that I started as an online seller,” Pangilinan related. “I started by selling almost everything online from toys, bags, dresses, t-shirts and even gadgets and this was also the time when I started selling my first line of skin care products.”

Pangilinan recalled that she would offer her wares by sending out private messages to her friends. None of them responded to her messages. When she decided to start her first skincare brand, she decided not to sell her products online.

“What I did was that I would come up with FB posts about my skincare products and I did that on a regular basis,” she said. “I worked really hard to look for buyers for my products and it even reached the point that I would stay awake until early morning just to reply to all the inquiries that I received.”

She said she encountered a lot of difficulties when she was still starting out. This, however, was her motivation to push herself to work even harder to achieve her dreams. Pangilinan added that she also wanted to remove the notion that online selling was only for housewives.

“I remembered meeting up a friend back in 2015 and I asked her if she would like to be a reseller of Skin Magical products,” Pangilinan said. “My friend said she was not interested because she had a full- time job abroad. She told me to instead ask another one of our classmates who happened to be a housewife in need of extra income.”

Pangilinan only managed to earn the respect of her skeptics last year when they found out that she was able to build her own company, Skin Magical, and travel abroad. This time around, her skeptics were asking her for tips on how to succeed in her line of business.

“If you are a housewife and an online seller, you should be very proud of yourself,” she said. “You should be proud that you are working hard for the sake of your family. Everyone should work hard to achieve those dreams and we all can succeed. Online selling is for everyone.”

Since then, Pangilinan has appeared several times on ABS CBN’s “My Puhunan” with Karen Davila to inspire and empower women to go into the online business and to make them believe that it is possible to get rich and be beautiful at the same time. She even managed to get actress Dimples Romana, well known for her role as Daniela Mondragon Bartolome on the teleserye “Kadenang Ginto,” to be one of Skin Magical’s many endorsers and influencers.

“I believe that education and having a degree is important but it does not guarantee that you will be successful,” Pangilinan said. “Even if you are very intelligent but you have no direction in life, you will not succeed. For you to succeed in your chosen field, you need to work hardpersevere and to have faith.”

Being Apart, Standing Together at the Mother of Online Free Concerts

Only four months ago, an online concert would have been an inconceivable idea, almost as inconceivable as a global pandemic, more inconceivable still is a free online concert like Tinig ng Bayan. With a talent lineup that would have been difficult to bring together even in pre-pandemic times, Tinig ng Bayan will probably be THE concert event of this time of adversity.

In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we may not have flattened the curve yet, but time and again through it all, Filipinos have shown resiliency, perseverance, and even ingenuity. Thanks to COVID-19, we have learned to live, work and even have fun in different and even innovative ways. Perhaps the most ambitiously innovative concert in this time, the Tinig ng Bayan Concert will be a one of a kind testament to the indomitable Filipino spirit.

With a virtual gathering of some of the greatest talents the country has ever produced performing in one unparalleled online concert event that will likely never happen again whether live or online, Tinig ng Bayan promises to be not just an epic music event, but a historical one, and this bit of history will never repeat itself.

Brought together by love of country, and the greater good, Tinig ng Bayan will feature the likes of Martin Nievera, Kakie Pangilinan, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garovillo, Noel Cabangon, Kean Cipriano, Johnoy Danao, Agot Isidro, Iza Calzado , Mylene Dizon, Enchong Dee, Ria Atayde and the League of AKTOR, Odette Quesada, Celeste Legaspi, Mitch Valdes, Bituin Escalante, Bayang Barrios, The Company, Bullet Dumas, Moonstar 88, True Faith, Baihana, Toma Cayabyab, Arman Ferrer, Jesuit Music Ministry, PETA, and so many more.

The Philippines will weather COVID-19 as it has weathered so many crises before it, and ultimately emerge triumphant. Till then, we can enjoy Tinig ng Bayan, which will run on July 27, Monday, 3 to 6 pm. The event will live streamed on Radyo Katipunan 87.9.

Google Philippines celebrates the 92nd birthday of the comedian, actor, producer, and philanthropist Rodolfo ‘Dolphy’ Quizon with a doodle

Today, Google Philippines celebrates the 92nd birthday of the comedian, actor, producer, and philanthropist Rodolfo ‘Dolphy’ Quizon with a doodle. This illustrates the country’s King of Comedy whose charm and humor warmed hearts and made him a household name among millions of Filipinos.

Born on this day in 1928 in Manila, Dolphy’s interest with the performing arts began in his childhood when he was selling peanuts and watermelon seeds at movie theaters. Able to watch movies for free, the young Dolphy started dreaming of becoming an actor and landed his first small film role at age 19. This was followed by years of hard work and success in film and radio before he made his big television debut with the 1960s series “Buhay Artista” (“Actor’s Life”).

Dolphy cemented his legacy in the industry with one of his most iconic roles in the family sitcom “John en Marsha” (“John and Marsha”).  The series ran through the ‘70s and ‘80s and was so popular that the actor went on to produce nine spin-off films through his own production company, RVQ Productions. The following decade, he proved that comedy never goes out of style as he starred as single father Kevin Kosme in the classic series “Home Along da Riles”.

With a career spanning over six decades and more than 200 movies and multiple long-running television shows under his belt, Dolphy became one of the pillars of the Philippine entertainment industry. He also founded the Dolphy Aid Para sa Pinoy Foundation which provided scholarships to children of overseas Filipino workers.

In honor of his contributions to show business and a lifetime of philanthropy, Dolphy was conferred the Philippines’ Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart in 2010.

“Google Philippines is proud to showcase one of our country’s iconic entertainment personalities to the world," said Mervin Wenke, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Google Philippines. “Through this Google Doodle, we recognize and pay tribute to Dolphy's remarkable talent and passion which have made a significant impact in the local entertainment industry, bringing laughter to generations of Filipinos. We hope that today, everyone is reminded of Dolphy’s legacy and how he taught everyone to find joy in everyday life.”

His gift of comedy and laughter lives on among his family members and across generations, and continues to inspire many comedians in the industry. Join Google in honoring the King of Comedy on his birthday by sharing a heartfelt message with the hashtag #GoogleDoodleForDolphy.

The Quarantine Effect: The Average Filipino Earned ₱55,000 on Carousell

A new user behaviour study conducted by Carousell, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing classifieds, shows that Filipinos largely adapted to the lockdowns around the country by making the best of what they have, through selling and buying. During the lockdown period, the average Filipino made ₱55,000, selling on Carousell

Selling second hand with hugot
Filipinos made more than 450,000 transactions for second hand items to earn extra money. For many, this was to save for rainy days, supplement income, or even to cushion the blow of losing a job during the pandemic. Carousell user Jhocen, who was forced to pause her full-time work and sold her preloved and vintage items on Carousell to keep her afloat, earned over ₱10,000 on Carousell during quarantine.

But many others sold their items with a different purpose in mind. Carousell user Ashley decided to start an initiative with a few of her friends, to raise funds for those who lost their sources of income during the quarantine. “During lent season, I wanted to be more proactive in fundraising for those affected by the quarantine and decided to sell my items and donate 100% of the proceeds,” said Ashley.

Similarly, Gabbi listed her secondhand clothes to raise funds as she “wanted to help daily wage earners and local businesses”. The quarantine period prompted her to notice how important everyday frontliners such as “Kuya” couriers were, how difficult their situation was, and how many still needed help with their jobs being cut.

Yet, even with this rise in conscious resourcefulness, there is still a lot more value to be unlocked in selling underused items. On Carousell’s marketplace alone, Filipinos could be selling an additional ₱3.8 billion worth of second hand items.

Love for food
Second hand marketplaces have quickly become a top of mind destination for certain items like women’s fashion and electronics, two of Carousell’s historically popular categories. But during the quarantine period, another popular category emerged.

Food and beverages businesses affected by the quarantine took to Carousell to continue selling their homemade delights, using the newly-launched Local F&B category, where users are able to search within a 10km radius of their location to narrow down the food nearest to them. It's no secret that Filipinos love their food—during the quarantine period alone, chats for items in the F&B segment alone increased by 188%. Filipinos were both selling their homemade goods on Carousell and using it to source for their cooking and baking needs too, right down to the nitty gritty of equipment such as whisks, which more than doubled in demand.

Carousell Stories
Raffy Montemayor, General Manager, Carousell Philippines said “We are one with our market partners and communities in the Southeast Asian region in working towards fighting this pandemic and restoring our respective economic lives and well-being. The country lockdowns brought about by our efforts in flattening the curve of the virus spread have shown the need to remain interconnected whilst apart. We are proud to be part of facilitating these vital commercial flows of buying and selling that are crucial in these difficult times. It is inspiring to see such great entrepreneurial drive mirrored in the stories of our users, and we want to ensure that our platform continues to empower them and allow their businesses to thrive. We wish to remain their reliable and trusted partner in our common journey to remake a better world for all beyond this crisis.”

To celebrate and share the stories of Carousellers who have exemplified true grit and resourcefulness, Carousell has launched a #MakingTheBest campaign that will roll out over the next few months. For more Carousell stories, visit press.carousell.com

Need a ref upgrade? You can get up to 40% off from Top appliances from Shopee!

On our last few visits at the mall,  I noticed that the only shops that are filled with people are the grocery, household and hardware departments, and appliance shops.

And whenever we passed by these appliance stores we see people buying either a new TV, airconditioning and refrigerators.

I guess people started to value having a nice TV since there wasn’t much to do during ECQ and airconditioning because well its been hot all throughout the year.

But refrigerators? I thinks it’s also become a necessity because families need an upgrade or because a lot of us are now into cooking/baking and we need a new ref to store the ingredients.

We also have to prioritize our family's health and having a good/ bigger ref allows us to store more healthy food fruits and vegetables.

Since not all of us are comfortable about going outside to shop, it’s a good thing that we can now order appliances online and have it delivered to our doorstep in just a few days.

If you are on the look out for a new ref, did you know that you can get up to 40% off on large appliances from Shopee?  Top appliances like Panasonic is available through Western Appliances official store in Shopee and you even get free shipping!

Still got those old Starbucks cards? Here's what to do with them

It was just last week that I decided to transfer my old and unused Starbucks  cards balance to my updated Starbucks Rewards App using my phone. (to update your Rewards, just enter a new password.)

But surprise! surprise! All the cards that I tried to key-in resulted to "invalid card."

I panicked at the thought of having so many cards and not being able to use them anymore. I think, I still have around Php6K plus worth of unused cards. Bigla ako nagka anxiety attack. Hahaha. Nakaka sad naman kung di na magagamit yung cards.

Before I went home yesterday. I dropped by SM North The Block to ask what to do.

The crew at the cashier explained to me that I could still transfer the balance of all my old cards to a new card. Buti na lang I kept one used card with a balance of p295 in my wallet.

He asked me to choose a new card. There were only 2 available. I chose the "star" card. Kase cute naman.

And you can now transfer the new balance to your Starbucks Rewards App to earn stars and get coffee freebies!

My new Starbucks card

That's it. Im planning to visit again next week and bring all  my old cards to transfer the  balance. I will let you know, how much I have accumulated for the past 4 years.

Take note--unregistered card can still be used for purchase, however it will not earn STARS.

BTW, if youre ready to dine-in. Starbucks is ready na for you! Just like others,  They have tracing form to fill up or just scan the QR provided at the table. Everything is sanitized. Social distancing is imposed too.

BDO Life launches a new online video about the value of life insurance in facing life’s ‘what ifs’

“What if she says ‘no’? What if she gets pregnant right away? What if she gets sick? What if I get sick?”—these are the thoughts running through the mind of a young man as he prepares to propose to his girlfriend in the newly-launched online video of BDO Life Assurance Company, Inc.

The video spotlights a man confronted by life stage uncertainties or the ‘what ifs’ that come with getting married, starting a family, and growing older.

“What if she wants a big wedding? What if she gets pregnant right away? What if we have twins? What if ours kids want to get double majors?” Like the video’s lead character, it’s normal to feel uneasy over these ‘what if’ questions despite the excitement of beginning a life together. Fortunately, there is a way to address life’s ‘what ifs.’

We Protect. BDO Life launches a new online video about the value of life insurance in facing life’s ‘what ifs.’ It is available on the official YouTube and Facebook pages of BDO Unibank.

“Everyone needs two plans in life. Plan A consists of a wealth accumulation program focused on successfully saving and investing within a given timeframe. But given life’s uncertainties, lifestyle needs, health risks, education costs, and other similar concerns, it’s smart to have financial safety nets, and that’s Plan B,” said Renato Vergel de Dios, president and CEO of BDO Life.

Vergel de Dios said that life insurance is Plan B. When Plan A is disrupted, Plan B takes over and infuses cash to complement Plan A. When life throws a curve ball, insurance money enables families to preserve their financial dignity. With sound preparation and planning, their lifestyle won’t have to change much—bills will be paid on time, children can continue their schooling, and there’ll be no need to agonize over expenses when invited to social occasions.

BDO Life’s video is part of its corporate mission to instill a protection mindset among Filipinos by educating them on the value of life insurance, in keeping with the company’s tagline, “We Protect.”

For Vergel de Dios, insurance is a way of life and a risk mitigation philosophy. The peace of mind that the financial protection life insurance provides is never a waste of money. If the insured makes it to retirement, they would be fortunate to have realized their life’s full earning potential. On the other hand, if tragedy and untimely loss happen, Plan B—life insurance—would act as a safety net and replace a portion of their lost income, the magnitude of which is dependent on the amount of their insurance coverage.

“There is a saying that goes, ‘No widow ever complains that her husband bought too much insurance.’ Try talking to someone who has lost a family breadwinner but whose financial burdens have been eased because of life insurance. Such conversations renew our mission,” added Vergel de Dios.
