Safety tips to learn for Fire Prevention Month

Its Fire Prevention Month and we have to take extra precaution because of  humidity and March being the hottest month of the year.

Did you know that an average of 42 fire incidents occurs in the Philippines daily? This amounts to around ₱4.65 billion worth of damage every year. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the top causes of fire outbreaks in the Philippines are faulty electrical connections, lighted cigarette butts, and open flames.

Since most of us are staying home with our families during this time, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our haven and sanctuary remains free from such health hazards. This Fire Prevention Month, educate yourself and your family on fire safety measures. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Here are five fire prevention measures you need to take:

Install smoke alarms

First things first: install a smoke alarm. These alarms can detect fire way before your nose can smell smoke. Early detection can save your house—and your loved ones’ lives.

Install smoke alarms on every floor, including inside bedrooms and living areas. Mount each unit on the ceiling or high up on walls. Don’t forget to test these out every month and change the batteries every year. You don’t want them to fail you when a fire actually breaks out. After ten years of use, replace each unit.

Try: X-SENSE Smoke Alarm, ₱1,500

Get fire extinguishers or blankets ready

Did you know that using water to extinguish fires isn’t fool-proof? Since oil and water don’t mix, using the latter to extinguish grease fires can actually cause it to spread. Additionally, water conducts electricity and you can get electrocuted if you try to douse an electrical fire.

Instead, invest in a fire extinguisher or fire blanket. Confused about which one to use? Smother smaller fires in the kitchen with a fire blanket. They’re less messy and won’t damage food items in your kitchen. For bigger, harder-to-reach fires, use a fire extinguisher. Make sure they’re available on each floor. Place them near the kitchen, garage, and any other exit routes.

Try: Daytech Fire Blanket, ₱489

Avoid open flames

Does your weekend pamper routine feature scented candles? Place your candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, preferably at a distance from your bed, curtains, and other flammable items. To avoid flare-ups, light them far away from aircon vents or electric fans.

You might feel relaxed and ready for bed with soothing scents, but never doze off and leave your candles unattended. Consider switching to battery-operated candles if you have kids and pets who might accidentally knock them over.

Try: At Home LED Candle, ₱230

Keep all appliances in working order

If you’ve been squeezing the last ounce of life out of your old appliances, it’s time to put them to rest. You’re not saving money by continuing to use rickety appliances until they give out. The faulty machinery and frayed cables pose a fire hazard. A fire outbreak will end up being more expensive than a new appliance.

Most home fires start in the kitchen, so keep cooking appliances, in particular, functioning properly. For malfunctioning appliances, don’t attempt to use and call in a repairman as soon as possible. Replace if needed.

Try: Haier Cooking Range, ₱15,799

Create a fire escape plan

In the same way you practice fire drills at school or at the office, your family should craft its own home fire escape plan as well.

Establish primary and alternative escape routes from the house and pick at least two meeting spots in case family members get separated from each other. Teach everyone the Stop, Drop, and Roll method in the event that their clothes catch fire. Lastly, buy an emergency medical kit you can easily grab on your way out of the house.

Try: Mediplast Emergency Kit, ₱465

Keep yourself and your loved ones safe from harm with these doable tips. Taking such exhaustive measures might feel excessive, but as with everything else, prevention is better than cure. For emergencies, call the National Emergency Hotline at 911, or the Philippine Red Cross at 143.

For all your shopping needs, download the Shopee app for free via the App Store or Google Play.

Metrobank contributed additional 50,000 meals to provide sustenance for the average-earners and poorest of poor

Cabinet Secretary and Task Force Zero Hunger (TFZH) chairman Karlo Nograles led the turnover of 1,000 meals to Municipality of Guiguinto, Bulacan Mayor Ambrosio “Boy Cruz and Vice Mayor Eliseo Santos. Joining them are representatives from the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. and McDonald’s Philippines.

Metrobank, through its corporate social responsibility arm Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), joins the Task Force Zero Hunger’s Pilipinas Kontra Gutom (PKG), aimed at ending massive hunger by 2030. Sustaining previous donations made to provide food for underprivileged families most affected by the pandemic, Metrobank contributed additional 50,000 meals to provide sustenance for the average-earners and poorest of poor.

An amount of more than PhP 2.5 million was coursed through Ronald McDonald’s House Charities (RMHC) Philippines for its McDonald’s Kindness Kitchen (MKK) program. The donation completes the target to provide over 100,000 meals to 50 cities and municipalities in the National Capital Region (NCR), Regions I, II, III, IV-A, V, VI, VIII, XI, and XII, including the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

To date, Metrobank, together with PKG and MKK has turned over almost 105,000 meals since November 2020. The distribution of meals will continue this month in Davao City, Tacloban and Palo, Leyte, and Antipolo, Rizal.

Led by Cabinet Secretary and Task Force Zero Hunger Chairman Karlo Nograles, PKG aims to address the problems on hunger and food security in the country especially during these times of crisis. A multi-sectoral movement, PKG is also committed to respond to the needs of communities during calamities and disasters through an efficient, systematic, and resilient relief operations. With the support of partner private institutions and non-government organizations, PKG shall ensure the availability and accessibility of food supplies, distribution of adequate nutrition to beneficiaries, and prompt assistance during crisis.

Photos above show the distribution of meals to the Municipalities of Mexico, Sta. Ana, and Arayat Pampanga; Municipalities of San Pedro and Biñan, Laguna; and Malabon City.

As one of PKG’s founding private sector members, MBFI president Aniceto Sobrepeña said, “We in the Metrobank Group seek to carry on our mission to uplift the lives of underprivileged Filipinos, especially now as our nation faces a long-drawn pandemic. Along with our partners from RMHC Philippines and Task Force Zero Hunger, we have made it our target to feed over 100,000 individuals in 50 cities and municipalities nationwide. Indeed, challenging times call for acts for solidarity and compassion. We are in the middle of a difficult period that demands kind thoughts and caring actions in equal measure.”

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Metrobank has been in the front lines in feeding poor families in the country. An amount of PhP 2 million was first donated to RMHC during the height of the enhanced community quarantine in March 2020. While another PhP 2 million was turned over during Metrobank’s Anniversary Grants Turnover in September last year. Through these donations, 80,000 meals were provided to individuals living in NCR as well as in Cebu and Davao provinces.

Here's the secret to good health!

The pandemic hit hard last year and got everyone rethinking their health habits in fear of catching the disease, that’s for sure. But the secret to good health is and has always been within reach, according to retail giant Amway Philippines.

“You achieve good health by taking care of yourself and keeping a balanced diet, giving your body the nutrients it needs and the love it deserves,” says Leni Olmedo, Country Manager of Amway Philippines. “A well-balanced plate has a lot of colors – lots of fruits and vegetables.”

Despite the Philippines being rich with lands and farms full of fruit and vegetable crops, a colorful plate just isn’t a common sight in Filipino dining tables. Good thing Amway’s plant-based health supplement brand Nutrilite is launching its new flagship product, the Next Generation of Nutrilite Double X, which can help color in these gaps in Filipino diets.

The food supplement contains sophora japonica, turmeric, rosemary, and a special blend of berries among other carefully selected fruits and vegetables. Jampacked with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, this supplement is actually a level up of the company’s previous flagship product of the same name. The original mutivitamin had phytonutrients that took reactive defenses against excess free radicals in the body – which is known to accelerate ageing. In the upgrade, the phytonutrients take proactive defenses by eliminating excess free radicals in the cells themselves.

“Our hearts have always been centered on helping our consumers lead healthier and more empowered lives,” Olmedo shares. “So we are constantly finding ways to innovate and improve. That’s why we were able to make our best supplement even better.”

Nutrilite boasts of having its own certified organic farms where they plant and source majority of their ingredients. This has allowed the company to make supplements that are traceable down to the very seed of its ingredients so consumers can be confident that their vitamins are pure, safe, and effective. For Nutrilite™ Double X, over 90% of its botanical ingredients are sourced in these farms.

“It’s not just about creating products and selling them. It’s about finding the best solutions and going the extra mile to ensure that they live up to their promise, and that’s what we do in Amway,” says Olmedo.

NGDX is available in Amway Exclusive Shopper. Sign up for free to access NGDX among other essentials and get free shipping for orders P1,000 and above.

Celebrating women on top: How these female leaders made their impact

Despite gender biases in the workplace, especially for industries traditionally dominated by men, women are now rising to the top and showcasing their unique brand of leadership.

Eastern Communications, a premier telecommunications company in the country, believes in diversity and inclusion and with two women at the helm, the company’s success is a showcase of what women leaders can do in the workplace. Moreover, its key partners, Plantation Bay and Australian - New Zealand Chamber of Commerce, also led by powerful women, can also attest to the effectiveness of having women at the top.

How have these women made an impact in their respective fields? Here are some insights on their experiences.

Atty Aileen Regio, Eastern Communications Co-Coordinator

Cherry Alego, Plantation Bay General Manager

Maricar Gonzales, Executive Director for Australia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce

Hermi Hizon

                                         Eastern Communications Co-Coordinator

The power of positive influence

Being in the industry for 15 years, Plantation Bay General Manager Cherry Allego says that believing in the power of influence within an organization can greatly impact people’s behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions.

Because to her, “Greatness is not measured merely by how long you served or by your gender. It is how you influence others to do great. With this, we grow together in our field of expertise and take pride in the learnings we acquired through the years.”

Allego also continues to emphasize the importance of understanding what the organization needs and trusting the capabilities of your group in order to prosper together. Moreover, she is driven by the power of giving and getting full support through influencing others to strive for growth and excellence.

“The secret is to serve with all your heart. There is nothing to fear when you know you have the full support of the group.” she added.

Unwavering perseverance

For the executive director for Australia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce, Maricar Gonzales understands the challenge of proving yourself as a woman worthy of a higher position while steering a company in the middle of a pandemic.

“It’s just ingrained in me that failure is not trying. I focus on what needs to be done, and more importantly, the why. Also, when things don’t work out, I see it as a step closer to success and just keep progressing” she stated.

The year 2020 might have been a rough year for most industries but Gonzales said that the last year has been the best year for the chamber since it began 40 years ago. Her ability to lead the company towards success in these taxing times can be attributed to her consistent persevering attitude.

Fostering employee wellbeing

Eastern Communications not only takes pride in their personalized customer service but as well as their prioritization over their employee’s wellbeing. For the company’s co-coordinators Atty. Aileen Regio and Hermi Hizon, although there were challenges in creating a better environment that could improve the management practices of the company, the duo were able to power through.

As they transitioned to a more refreshed company culture that promotes a strong connection between staff and executives, this matter began to disappear.

“While we continuously distinguish ourselves as a telco with personalized customer service, we also make sure that our employees’ needs and concerns are being attended just as how we do it to our clients,” shared Atty. Regio.

Despite the pandemic bringing great challenges to the company, the combined teamwork of Atty. Regio and Hizon together with their diligent employees has helped Eastern Communications thrive during this time.

According to Hizon, “The pandemic is one of the biggest challenges we faced as a company and as leaders, we have to be agile and be on top of everything to be able to adapt to the new environment. We appreciate the coordination of the whole company and for trusting us in this trying time.”

As people observe more women competently serving as leaders, it will no longer seem strange that a woman is in charge. But there still is a long way to go. A great and fearless leader is defined not by their gender but by how they rise to success together with their people.

Have “Knots and Knots of fun” bonding with your family as you enjoy Cheesy Knots snacks

Staying indoors for too long can make your kids feel bored. Instead of letting them spend their days glued to their smartphones or tablets, try these activities that you can actually do with them. Now, you’re not only adding excitement to their moments at home, you also get to bond and have fun together.

Check out these four fun and exciting at-home activities your kids will love doing with you:

Indoor scavenger hunt

Hide different items around the house and have your little ones search for them. To make this more interesting, make the clues specific to your family  information only you and your family would know like items or places linked to their favorites or special memories.

If you see your kids having fun with this game, make it a weekly habit. You can even assign a host among your family members every week so even the kids get the feel of hiding something. If they’re too young, you or an older sibling can pair up with them.

Your own dance party

Exercising is always advised, especially now that we’re all cooped up indoors. Make it a lot more fun by dancing the night (or day) away with the whole family. Allow different family members to suggest different songs of their preference so everyone gets their share of leading the dance.

Just let loose, laugh, and break a sweat together.

Karaoke time

Karaoke is a very Filipino family activity. You can take it up a notch by turning it into a full-on singing competition. Pick a theme every week: can be based on the singer, the genre of the song, or even the current occasion (like Christmas songs for the Holidays, love songs for Valentine’s Day, etc.), and have family members perform based on the theme. Make it extra glamorous by wearing costumes that align with the performance.

You can include exciting prizes like unlimited Cheesy Knots snacks, no chores for three days, or more TV time.

Do Knot forget the snacks

To make each activity even more fun, have some snacks! And since we’re talking about bringing joy into your little ones’ days, you can’t go wrong with Cheesy Knots. It’s a yummy pretzel snack, with milky cheese flavored coating.

Make sure to stock up your pantry with Cheesy Knots, so everyone can munch on them while having the best time together as a family. Have “Knots and Knots of fun” bonding with your family as you enjoy this new delicious treat.

If you’re looking for more exciting activities to try out with your family, check the Club Knots Facebook page. It’s filled with creative activity videos you and your kids can do together.

vivo empowers self-expression and self-care in the development of their smartphones and campaigns

While the global smartphone brand, vivo, has always been known as the brand that advocates for self-expression, it became all the more meaningful when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It gave the brand more reason to innovate its upcoming unit releases and support users in ways that it can.

Besides helping cater to the needs of those directly affected at the onset through PPE donations and such, vivo also sought to address the mental health impact of the pandemic on its consumers by developing smartphones and campaigns that could complement and elevate lifestyles despite being stuck at home.

Midway through 2020, vivo launched its V19 lineup, with advanced night photography and gaming capabilities, through the “Ignite Your Night” campaign which called on millennials to continue to pursue their passions at night, when virtual work and classes are usually over.

Towards the end of the year, when digital content and creators popped up left and right, posing a challenge for millennials to rise above the noise and be recognized, vivo launched a campaign to enable millennials to “Be the Focus” through its V20 lineup which were equipped with a state-of-the-art selfie camera and unprecedented eye autofocus technology.

Now, in 2021, where COVID fatigue is starting to become widespread and millennials are starting to feel powerless again, vivo launched its “All-Day Fun” campaign, reminding its consumers that they have the power to take control of their lives at home and welcome fun all-day, every day—especially with the vivo Y31, a budget smartphone packed with flagship-like features and an all-day fast charging 5000mAh battery.

Through this latest campaign and the capabilities of the Y31, vivo invites millennials to continue to explore passions and hobbies such as smartphone gaming, photography, and content creation, to help welcome positivity and make the most out of their everyday lives at a time when it is tempting to feel that life’s possibilities are limited.

If its past few campaigns are any indicator, vivo is poised to continue this thrust of prioritizing their consumers’ well-being in the development of their smartphones and campaigns.
