From Ground Up to Glow Up: Dark Roast Coffeehouse’s First Year Story

I still vividly remember attending the opening of Dark Roast Coffeehouse in Maginhawa. Back then, the place was still being set up — shelves half-filled, the scent of fresh paint in the air — while we interviewed Jianne, who was then expecting her first child. The excitement in her eyes, and those of her co-founders Krista, Eli, and John, was unmistakable. This wasn't just their first coffee shop; it was their first business together, a dream they were turning into reality.

Fast forward to today, and it’s clear just how far they've come. Dark Roast has grown into a beloved neighborhood hub — a favorite haunt for students, young professionals, artists, and creatives alike. And today, they're proudly celebrating a major milestone: their very first anniversary.

Carrying the theme "Darker. Bolder. Better.," Dark Roast Coffeehouse is marking the occasion with a special event tonight, April 27, at their cozy space at G/F TKC Square Building, Maginhawa, Quezon City. The owners — Krista, Jianne, Eli, and John — are taking a moment to thank the community that turned their dream into a vibrant reality.

"This past year has been an incredible journey," shared John. "Seeing Dark Roast become a second home for students, artists, and neighbors here in Maginhawa is more than we ever dreamed of. We wanted to build something real, and the response has been overwhelming."

From day one, Dark Roast Coffeehouse stood out not just for its strong, flavorful brews but also for the space it created — a welcoming, cozy refuge where ideas, stories, and music could flourish. It quickly became a venue for indie musicians, a meet-up spot for the local creative crowd, and a go-to place for anyone craving a cup of coffee that packs a punch.

"We started with a passion for bold coffee and a desire to build genuine connections," Krista added. "Reaching this anniversary shows that people crave authenticity, community, and, yes, seriously good dark roast! And we're just getting started."

Tonight’s festivities promise to be a true celebration of the journey so far — and an exciting glimpse of what’s to come. Guests will be treated to a tasting flight featuring their newest offerings, including the Dark Roast LatteOreo Croissant, and Black Sesame Croissant. Expect an evening filled with good food, great coffee, shared stories, and a look back at the highlights of their first year.

"This celebration isn't just about reaching a milestone," Eli emphasized. "It’s about the incredible community that made it possible. We’re so grateful to everyone who’s walked through our doors, and we can’t wait to keep growing with you. Get ready for even darker, bolder, better things ahead!"

Looking back, Jianne reflected, "From crafting unique brews and pastries to hosting live indie music nights, this first year laid the groundwork. Tonight, we're excited to share what's next — and continue brewing joy together with everyone who made this journey special."

Located in the heart of the bustling Maginhawa food district, Dark Roast Coffeehouse is more than just a coffee shop — it’s a thriving community space where bold flavors meet authentic connections. Since opening, it has built a loyal following thanks to its high-quality brews, cozy atmosphere, and commitment to fostering creativity.

Beyond their signature dark roasts and inventive pastries, Dark Roast regularly hosts musicians, students, bloggers, and artists, offering a warm, welcoming space to gather, create, and celebrate. Their mission is simple but powerful: to be "Darker. Bolder. Better." with every cup and every connection.
