Nissan Philippines, Inc. (NPI) recently introduced the GT Academy to the country, opening doors to Filipinos wanting to break into the racing profession.

The top 6 drivers will join Asia’s best at the Race Camp in August at the prestigious Silverstone Racing Circuit in the UK where they will be tested on their strength, stamina, mental agility and of course, driving skills. The emerging winner will join others from the different regions in a series of rigorous training under the Driver Development Program.

Since its launch in 2008, the 2015 GT Academy season will be the biggest year yet. Last April 24-26, the Nissan GT Academy was at the SM Sky Dome in SM North EDSA. Joining the hopefuls was gorgeous celebrity, Sam Pinto who exuded girl power behind the wheel. Despite being unfamiliar with the video game, she confidently slid into the driver seat of the simulator pod and revved through the virtual track. Sam learned to drive when she was 16 years old and figured that with a little practice, she can clock a decent lap time and compete with the other gamers. “This is the closest I can get to being a race car driver, they told me it’s open to women too, so I thought I’d give it a shot,” Sam explained. “Driving on the simulator was a nice escape from traffic, it was fun to be able to just floor it!” she continued.

Value Your Most Important Asset with PhilamLife

Dr. John Solamo, an ophthalmologist with an avid interest in marathons and fitness, was a young man who had every expectation of good health. By living an active lifestyle, that has invested greatly into ensuring his health and well-being through prevention and maintenance.

Unfortunately, a strange, heavy sensation in his chest soon ruined his all carefully laid plans of an active lifestyle. A stress test revealed that three of his major vessels were clogged and that there was barely any blood flowing through the interior of his heart. At the age of 42, Solamo underwent a five-vessel cardiac bypass surgery.

Solamo’s experience is one of many examples that emphasize a worrisome and undeniable fact: health setbacks can happen even to those who are considered to be physically fit. “There’s this wrong idea that you’re invincible when you’re exercising,” Solamo pointed out, as he recalled his struggles four years ago. “Even if you lead a healthy lifestyle, you just can’t be too sure what will happen at any given time,” he added.

Compounding the stress that a major illness brings is the strain it puts on one’s finances. When his heart attack hit him, Solamo had just recently purchased a new home, and had his daughter’s education to think of.

According to critical care specialist Dr. Emily Tan-Aventura, heart disease (which affects 9 out of 10 Filipinos) typically costs patients up to PhP1 million in expenses. Treatment of other critical illnesses like cancer, of which 11 Filipinos are diagnosed every hour, can cost around PhP700,000, or even more. Strokes claim 168 lives daily, racking up to PhP14,400 for each day of treatment and therapy. These are only a few of the costs attached to a clean bill of health.

In the case of Solamo, his foresight and initiative to also financially invest in his health reaped great rewards. He was fortunate enough to have an insurance plan that covered most of his medical bills. Since then, the company that provided this invaluable assistance has developed even better products to address the financial obligations of serious illnesses.

“The key is to provide comprehensive financial protection for critical illnesses such as heart attack, cancer, and stroke beginning at the early stages,” noted Philam Life Chief Marketing Officer Jaime Jose Javier, Jr. “This is precisely what our company’s Health Invest Plus delivers,” he emphasized.

Philam Life’s Health Invest Plus provides lump-sum benefits when diagnosed with any of the 56 covered major critical illnesses. Once diagnosed, the plan holder is spared from paying future premium payments. Moreover, if the plan holder is diagnosed with a covered early stage critical condition, 25 percent of the Critical Illness coverage will be given in advance.

Having 56 types of major critical illnesses and 11 early stage conditions covered makes Health Invest Plus the unit-linked plan with the most number of critical illnesses in the market. “Unit-linked products are life insurance and investment plans-in-one where the benefits are linked to the returns of a chosen investment fund,” Javier explained. “Since Health Invest Plus is a unit-linked plan, premium payments are invested, allowing one to grow a Health fund which can be used for health maintenance or other costs during one’s later years.”

What’s more is that, unlike most other critical illness plans, people up to 65 years old can still avail of a Health Invest Plus, and its critical illness coverage is available until age 75 – when one’s past retirement and in greater need of medical care. The plan also provides cash benefits for accidental injuries or disabilities and loss of life, providing comprehensive coverage for policyholders.

“With Philam Life’s Health Invest Plus, customers can experience peace of mind knowing they are financially prepared against health setbacks now and as they grow older,” Javier said. “Our goal is to make health benefits available to clients so they can enjoy the opportunity to be there for their families as they grow older. In the case of John [Solamo], his decision to have a health policy helped him recover from his seemingly unlikely and unexpected illness. He’s once again enjoying the active lifestyle that he has always pursued, and continues to enjoy life’s moments with his loved ones” he concluded.

Do More With Less at home with Electrolux Appliances

Electrolux, a global leader in home appliances, launched its Do More With Less campaign at Abenson Global City last April 22 to empower moms to be more creative and resourceful at home.
The event was hosted by Issa Litton and attended by Electrolux Ambassadors Cheska Kramer, Chef Rosebud Benitez and Chef Bruce Lim.

The brand ambassadors shared do-it-yourself home products you can easily make using Electrolux home appliances.

"Filipino Moms are inventive. Leave it to them to find a way to recycle something that seems unusable,” said Andrea Pionilla,  Marketing Manager of Electrolux Philippines. “Electrolux’s newest campaign wants to show moms how easy it is to do more with less when they have the right home appliances to help them out.”

“I am thrilled to be part of this meaningful campaign. As a practical dad, I’ve always been a believer that with the right tools, you can always do more with less,” said Doug Kramer. “I love how Electrolux appliances help us accomplish more things at home so Cheska and I can spend more time with the kids and less time managing the household.”

Do More With Less at home

According to the Philippine Institute for Developmental Studies, Metro Manila produces 5,600 tons of trash per day and 75% of this comes from households. The same research also showed that half of the daily household waste comprises food scraps and leftovers. A study conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation found that one of the reasons behind food wastage among developing countries is wasteful consumption habits.

Electrolux invites you to share your own lifehacks at home. Join the Reduce Food Waste Challenge on Facebook. Share your tips on how to transform used items into something useful again and get a chance to win exciting prizes from Electrolux. Like The Electrolux Little White Book on Facebook to know more about the contest.

This is my Electrolux tip to keep the food fresh longer when storing in the ref.

With the help of Electrolux appliance you can do more with less by keeping your food fresh longer and eliminating the need to throw away uneaten or spoiled vegetables or fruits.

1.     Some foods create ethylene gas that cause other nearby fruits and vegetables to ripen and spoil faster than normal. Things that should NOT go in the refrigerator include avocados, apricots, bananas, oranges, kiwi fruit, melons, nectarines, pears, peaches, plums, pineapple and tomatoes. Don't put food in the refrigerator that doesn’t require to be refrigerated.

2.    Always keep your vegetable bins clean,  before adding new fruits and vegetables, make sure you wipe out the plastic bins with a sponge. Keeping your vegetable bins clean will prevent bacteria and mold growth.

3.    Make sure foods are well wrapped or covered. Food that is exposed to the inside air of the refrigerator will spoil more quickly than if it were well covered. Store food in a tightly sealed container like a ziploc seal or cover with wrap or foil before putting in food in the refrigerator.

4.    To ensure that your food lasts as long as possible, keep your fridge between 37°F and 40°F, and your freezer between 0°F and 2°F. Buy an inexpensive thermometer to keep inside so that you can check the temperature regularly.

5.    Make sure that the items you buy are as fresh as possible. Local, in-season produce will always get to the grocery store faster than something shipped from overseas. Buying local means your food is as fresh as possible and will last longer, which also means less waste!

We spend a lot of money on our groceries and ensuring that they stay fresh long enough for us to enjoy them is a great way to make sure we aren’t wasting food.

Are you ready to rumble this Sunday for the biggest Boxing Fight in History between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and our very own Manny Pacquiao?

So what's the next worse thing about missing the Pac-May fight?

Watching it alone.

Its no fun to watch this historic boxing match all by your lonesome, so why not invite your family or few friends over to share in the excitement.

For starters, Annalyn prepared “Pac-Balls,” (pork meatballs) and “Mayweather lollies,” (chicken lollipops) which can be dipped in either Clara Ole Guava Jelly or Strawberry Jam to give these appetizers an exchange of salty-sweet balance.

For those who prefer a healthier option, blogger Kenny Ngo, brought her specially made “Las Vegas Salad,”-- mixed greens and macaroni topped generously with Clara Ole’s Thousand Island or creamy ranch dressing.

To keep your energy levels up during those intense moments, Annalyn and her officemate Richard Saldana came up with two pasta suggestions.

Annalyn showcased her specialty which she dubbed the Kung Pao Counterpunch, spicy shrimp pasta made tastier and easier to prepare with

Richard meanwhile made Southpaw Pasta in honor of his favorite boxer using Clara Ole’s Three Cheese pasta sauce.

Finally for desserts, Annalyn friends contributed two sweet treats: Arpee Lazaro’s Pound for Pound pudding topped in Clara Ole strawberry jam or Chocolate Syrup, while Gene Yao prepared a colorful Fruit Kebab drizzled in Clara Ole’s Blueberry, Tutti Fruity or Strawberry syrup.

Celebrity host Amy Perez made a surprise appearance to share some #diskartips while Chef Kat Laxamana taught guests on how to do simple plating.

“Game night” is the first of Clara Ole’s Potluck Foodfest, a series of eight themed potluck mini parties at condo residences. Relive the music of The British Invasion at Resorts World Manila

Ever wondered why The Beatles are so popular here and abroad, why One Direction, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith are all loved even if they are British?

Well it is because back in 1960’s the British Phenomenon occurred when rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom,as well as other aspects of British culture, became popular in the United States, and significant to the rising”counterculture” on both sides of the Atlantic.Pop and rock groups such as The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five,The Kinks,The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits and The Whowere at the forefront of the invasion.

The British Invasion had a profound impact on popular music, internationalizing the production of rock and roll, establishing the British popular music industry as a viable centre of musical creativity, and opening the door for subsequent British performers to achieve international success. In America the Invasion arguably spelled the end of instrumental surf music,pre-Motown vocal girl groups, the folk revival (which adapted by evolving into folk rock), and (for a time) the teen idols that had dominated the American charts in the late 1950s and 1960s.

And this 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the British Invasion, with six bands coming over to Manila in a one night only performance. Almost two hours of superb and top charting hits that will be performed by The Tremeloes, The Troggs, Marmalade, The Animals, Mike Pender’s Searchers and Spencer Davis.

The Animals who began in Newcastle as the Kansas City Five were a major influence among R&B-based British bands in the early Sixties. The band moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. The Animals were known for their gritty, bluesy sound. The band balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-oriented album material. Some of their greatest hits are “House of the Rising Sun”, “I’m Crying”, “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” and “It’s My Liife”.

The Marmalade was a Scottish pop rock group from the east end of Glasgow, originally formed in 1961 as the Gaylords, and then later billed as Dean Ford and the Gaylords. In 1966, they changed the group name to The Marmalade. The most successful period for the band, in terms of UK chart success was between 1968 and 1972. Hits do include “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da”, “Loving Things” and “Reflection of My Life”.

Mike Pender’s Searchers was the voice of the Searchers, one of the most influential band to come out of Liverpool in the early 1960’s. Pender also played the trademark Jangly Rickenbacker twelve string riffs on such quintessential hits as “Needles and Pins” which gave way to the West Coast folk-rock revolution closely identified with the Byrds. Garnering UK#1 hit in the 1963, “Sweets for my Sweets”, “Sugar and Spice”, “Love Potion No.9” and “Don’t Throw Your Love Away” are some of the recognizable and adored songs of this group.

Spencer Davis produced some of the most dynamic R&B singles of the sixties, hailing from Wales, Spencer founded the famed Spencer Davis Group in 1963, producing a dozen top 10 hit songs, helping to bring British rock n’ roll to the rest of the world. Hits include “Gimme Some Lovin”, “Keep on Running” and “Somebody Help Me”.

The Tremeloes was a band chosen by Decca Records over the Beatles when they both audition for the recording company on New Year’s Day, 1962. Decca Records chose the Tremeloes over the newcomers because, as a London based outfit, they would be more easily accessible. The Tremeloes did produce some hits for Decca Records, ultimately placing thirteen songs in the British top forty. Some of the hits of the band were “Twist and Shout”, “Do You Love Me”, “Here Comes My Baby” and “Silence is Golden”.

Last band on the tour list is The Troggshave continued to embrace both hard rock and alternative music during their more than 45 years together. The Troggs is an abbreviation of their original name the Troglodytes meaning cavemen.

This concert is presented by Resorts World Manila in cooperation with Redstone Media Productions Inc.

Tickets are available at Ticketworld, SM Tickets, Ticketnet and Resorts World Box Office.

Peabo Bryson sings his best songs at Resorts World Manila

The first glance across the room, your first slow dance, the moment you surrender yourself to someone, Peabo Bryson sings the words that true romantics would love to say. He sings the words that women long to hear, if only once in their lifetime. Peabo Bryson sings the music of romance, the music of love.

Peabo Bryson has established himself as one of the premier male vocalists in contemporary music of the last quarter century. Possessing a beautifully rich, almost operatic voice, this two-time Grammy Award winner has prospered despite the passage of time and changes in popular musical trends. With 20 albums to his credit, Bryson has enjoyed an unprecedented, across-the-board level of international success; Peabo was the first artist in music history to have separate records topping four different charts.

Bryson's greatest solo hits include 1977's "Feel the Fire" and "Reaching for the Sky", 1978's "I'm So Into You" and "Crosswinds" 1982's "Let the Feeling Flow", 1984's "If Ever You're in My Arms Again" (his first Top 10 pop single, at #10 in the US), 1989's "Show and Tell", and the 1991 hit "Can You Stop the Rain". In 1985, he appeared on the soap opera One Life to Live to sing a lyrical version of its theme song. Bryson's vocals were added to the regular theme song in 1987 and his voice was heard daily until 1992. He recorded the successful album of romantic love duets with Roberta Flack (Born to Love) in 1983.

Bryson won a Grammy Award in 1992 for his performance of the song "Beauty and the Beast" with Céline Dion and another in 1993 for "A Whole New World" (Aladdin's Theme) with Regina Belle.
