#StayHealthy is the New Normal: How to Keep Your Family Safe at Home

The health crisis has changed our daily routines at home and at work. But one thing is certain – a changed lifestyle. Now that our communities are slowly re-opening and businesses are resuming, we move forward with “the new normal.” This could mean strict implementation of social distancing in public places and for some people – a longer “work-from-home” period.

In the span of few months while adapting into the community quarantine, we have altered our ways of living and homes have become a multi-functional space for personal, family and work responsibilities. And it goes without saying that in the face of unprecedented times, we must take extra preventive measures to help keep our families safe and healthy at home.

Now, as we embrace the new normal, what does this mean for your family at home?

Here are some ways to maintain a healthy and safe environment for your loved ones:

1.     Boost your immune system.
The immune system is our body’s first line of defense against disease-causing microorganisms. It’s inevitable especially for parents nowadays to juggle more functions simultaneously at home. Thus, the body’s immunity needs to take up a notch by maintaining a healthy balance of good nutrition and lifestyle. According to Pediatrician Dra. Gelline Suderio, “The body cannot naturally produce all the necessary vitamins and minerals. It’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle to boost the immune system.”

Dra. Suderio gives the following healthy-living strategies to boost the immune system especially for families with children at home: “Remember the go, grow, and glow concept. It’s important to keep a balanced diet and avoid foods rich in preservatives, additives and sugar. Always keep yourself hydrated. And most importantly, get enough rest time and sleep at night.”

2.     Take vitamins and supplements wisely.
According to Pediatrician Dra. Andrea Carag, “Think of your vitamin and minerals like the active ingredients in a recipe. Without these micronutrients, the immune system simply does not function properly.”

Choosing the right vitamins and supplements are important to help the body strengthen its general immune system. Dra. Suderio recommends consulting a doctor or healthcare practitioner before taking any multivitamins or food supplements. She says, “Your best source of vitamins is the food you eat, so get as many nutrients as you can from fresh and whole foods. Multivitamins will complement your diet and lifestyle.” For parents with young children at home, she says, “Nutrients that help build bones and promote brain development are especially significant in childhood.”

3.     Keep a clean environment and maintain proper hygiene.
With the rainy season comes a lot of illnesses such as dengue, amoebiasis, and respiratory diseases. Dra. Carag reminds us that to prevent these illnesses from penetrating the home, it’s important to keep our environment clean. She shares, “The rainy season is known to bring in a variety of infections because the cooler and denser air helps pathogens linger around longer. Make sure that the drinking water is clean through filtration and/or boiling and maintain a clean environment especially for children with play area at home. If children play on the floor, make sure to disinfect and their area is not stepped on by outside shoes. Have your kids avoid others who are sick and teach them proper hygiene such as washing of hands with clean soap and water.”

Dra. Suderio adds for parents with toddlers at home, “Keep the baby’s things and surroundings clean. Minimize their exposure to potential risks. Some tips may include keeping household cleaning materials out of their reach, hide small pieces of objects that they may accidentally ingest, keep sockets covered, and baby gates closed. Always keep an eye on the child if possible and be in touch with your doctor if the medical need arises.”

4.     Be active and exercise regularly.
A single session or 30 minutes per day of moderate exercise such as yoga, brisk walking or steady cycling can give the immune system a boost. For parents with school-age children at home, Dra. Carag recommends, “Give kids a role to play in the household. For older children and teenagers, give them responsibilities that make the household safer, like disinfecting groceries, keeping stock of face masks and soap. Have teenagers look after the younger ones by participating in their hand hygiene.”

5.     Maintain a positive mindset.
Dra. Suderio stresses the importance of making the children feel safe at home, managing their behavior by teaching them resilience, and keeping healthy routines in check. These behaviors are handy not just now but even after the quarantine. She says, “Maximize your time with them by doing interactive and fun activities where they can learn. Do fitness activities in the morning, baking in the afternoon, cooking healthy meals for dinner. Let the kids be involved and make every moment spent with them a learning experience.”
Dra. Carag advises keeping a stress-free environment at home despite the uncertainties of the times. She shares, “Make sure that kids are not exposed to stressors. This can mean emotional stressors like anxiety or fear. Making sure that you and your children have proper emotional and mental state is helpful in boosting the body’s immunity.”

Master the Art of Home Cooking with Foxy Folksy on TikTok

It all started with a craving for Filipino food. While living in Germany, Bebs Manaloto-Lott found herself with a little extra time, and a hungry husband to feed. “I started cooking Filipino food for me and Armin. And at the same time I was writing it down. I started Foxy Folksy as a hobby. It wasn’t really all about food. It began as a lifestyle blog, more about giving facts, giving practical tips. Foxy kasi nga savvy at the same time practical,” she shares. “But right now mas nagli-lean sya sa food. You know, Kapampangan. Mahilig kumain!”
Armin Lott, who manages Foxy Folksy together with his wife, loves Pinoy cuisine. He even remembers the first time Bebs made him try Filipino food. When asked what the dish was, he answered, “Bagoong!” Bebs shares that her German hubby also enjoys the Kapampangan buro with mustasa, but the most requested dish in their home is chicken curry.
Now, the husband and wife team is back in the Philippines, and focusing on Foxy Folksy as their full time job. On TikTok, their account already has 51.7K followers and 567.5K likes. The delicious dishes that they feature, and the easy to follow instructions that come with them, are largely what makes Bebs and Armin a success online.
This baked ziti recipe is one of Foxy Folksy’s most viewed videos on TikTok.

Based on her content, you would think that Bebs was a graduate of Culinary Arts, but she’s actually self-taught in the kitchen. “I’m not a chef. I’m not a learned cook. I learned everything from experience,” she says. “Actually, here in the Philippines, I took Accountancy. My last job was a Financial Analyst,” she adds. “Although, my parentswe had a canteen in front of the school. So, yun din siguro. Kaya malaki ang influence ng foodsa akin kasi I grew up si Mama mahilig magluto. Mga tita ko, lola ko mahilig talaga maluto.
On their experience with TikTok, the couple says that it has been a good way to reach younger audiences. They’ve even received messages from students who plan on using their recipes for school projects.
Here’s another awesome step-by-step cooking post from Foxy Folksy.

The Foxy Folksy creators need not look far to find inspiration to produce good quality content. The appreciation they receive from their audience is more than enough. One time meron pa kong nareceive na emailIt was so long. She’s undergoing depression. I didn’t see myself as a funny person pero pag binabasa raw nya yung blog ko natatawa sya. Yun lang, yung ganoong bagay. Parang…Wow! It gives sense to what we’re doing,” Bebs shares. “Kahit sa pagse-share ng recipes. We receive a lot of comments from people who don't know how to cook or bake but are able to do it on their first try. It motivates us to do more.”
For budding content creators who also wish to make it big on TikTok, this is what Bebs and Armin have to say. “Best advice is consistency. You have to have a schedule. If you want it as a job then you have to treat it as a job.” But beyond this, heart matters, too. Bebs adds, “Hindi lang you just do it for the money. You have to show that you love what you’re doing.”

A mother’s sacrifice: Heroic tales of love and care from mom frontliners

One trait that best defines moms is their being selfless -- always ready to make sacrifices for her family and her kids. This is particularly seen during these difficult times where mothers, particularly those in the frontlines, have stepped up to be the first line of defense of both their household and the community.

Honoring their heart for service, Lactum 3+6+ released a campaign tribute that pays gratitude to real-life moms who are at the frontlines, sharing their healing care to their fellow countrymen. Each of these women have their own motivations that keep them strong amid the crisis, but what they share in common is that they are true models of panalo parenting in these hard times.

Duty calls
Healthcare and medical workers like mommies Milinda Albario, Patricia Vasay, and Tessa Eusebio have an important role to fulfill in this health crisis. They are among the first responders in the hospitals and emergency rooms, tending to people confined with symptoms of COVID-19.

“When the COVID-19 outbreak hit the country, my ward was converted to an isolation ward receiving patients with the symptoms. As a nurse, I was assigned to closely administer the patients and was encouraged not to go home to avoid spreading the disease to our family,” says Milinda Albario. “I was very scared and worried, and I was always thinking about my children at home.”

Mommy Patricia Vasay, 33, Pediatrician

Meanwhile, Patricia Vasay was appointed to the pediatric care ward in their emergency room. “During the first few weeks of the quarantine, I felt proud to be at the pediatric care. But as time went on, I felt frustrated because a lot of my co-workers were getting sick too and I was scared for myself and my son.”

“We feel scared because you never really know if you’re going to get the virus while at work,” adds Eusebio. “But one thing that motivates me as a doctor is love for my family and my countrymen. I believe that it is a blessing to be able to do what you love most and be of service to others.”

Mommy Tessa Eusebio, 30, Physician

Keeping up with family in the pandemic
Being at the frontlines has lessened the amount of time spent by these moms with their precious kids at home. However, uniforms and duties aside, these strong women recognize that motherhood still comes first and that the safety of their children is their priority.

Policewoman Fatima Lanuza reflects on what being a mother means to her, sharing, “Being a mother has given me a sense of direction and purpose in life. It also taught me to be selfless and consider that every decision I make will affect my children’s future.”

Mommy Fatima Lanuza, 33 Policewoman
Currently, she is assigned at the Minalabac Municipal Police Station and is in charge of ensuring that people stay at home during the quarantine. She expresses gratitude for her kids for being her source of energy at the frontlines, “My little ones have been refueling me with their love and appreciation. They would send videos of them clapping as a way to thank frontliners. Just seeing them happy and safe at home makes me feel energized.”

Motherhood has also changed the outlook of volunteer worker and mom of 3, Chexcy Lorayna, who shares that her kids helped her become a better person. Despite the risks of working in the pandemic, she never fails to give her children some valuable lessons, “I always remind my kids that when we are serving other people, we are also serving God. I help them understand that other people need my help and seeing them behave and try to understand our situation gives me courage and comfort.”

Looking ahead to the future
“There are so many things that I miss about my kids, especially their hugs and kisses. But what I miss the most is time spent with them,” expresses Lorayna. “I believe that love is synonymous with time and I cannot wait to shower them with my affection and attention soon.”

Mommy Chexcy Lorayna, 36, Volunteer

When things go back to normal, these moms want nothing more than to be by their children’s side. Whether it’s play dates, movie nights, or weekend trips, they are looking forward to new bonding moments and enjoying fun activities with their kids again.

And as these selfless moms continue to be strong and caring for their family and the country, they only have one request for the Filipinos. Lanuza says, “We appeal to everyone to pray for us, the frontliners, the nation, and our families. This pandemic will soon be over. Please do not leave your homes, so we may live for the future.”

To help Filipino families affected by the pandemic, a P50 donation will be made for every Lactum 3+6+ purchased online.

For the list of online partners, visit Lactum 3+6+ official Facebook page. Watch these moms in Lactum 3+’s touching Mother’s Day video on Facebook
