UN Women celebrates women empowerment

Honoring Gender Equality Champions in the Philippines. UN Women gathered past winners of the UN WEPs Awards in its effort to bring together advocates of women empowerment in the business and workplace. Photo shows (upper left to right) Mr. Gustavo Gonzalez, UN Resident Coordinator; Her Excellency Saskia de Lang, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Netherlands to the Philippines and EU Gender Champion; Mr. Christoph Wagner, EU Delegation Head of Cooperation; and Lenlen Mesina, UN Women WeEmpowerAsia Philippines Program Manager with the 2021 winners of the UN WEPs Awards.

Winners of the annual Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Awards for 2020 and 2021 gathered at the ceremonial kickoff of the “WEPs Winners Circle" to celebrate gender equality champions and discuss how to push for women's empowerment, gender equality, diversity and inclusion across the workplace, marketplace, and community last December 3, 2021, at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel, Makati City.

Organized by the UN Women programme WeEmpowerAsia and the European Union, the WEPs Awards recognizes leaders, businesses, and companies operating in the Philippines for their achievements in advancing gender equality in business.

With COVID-19 posing several challenges for women whose responsibilities go beyond their role in the workplace but also at home, companies were encouraged to step up to ensure that women remain a crucial member of the workplace and help advance their participation despite the adversities. Champions of the UN WEPs Awards are testament to how women can still succeed given the right platforms and opportunities.

UN Women Philippines Country Program Manager Lenlen Mesina welcomed the winners at the event after onsite gatherings had to be postponed due to the pandemic. “The work that you all do is not just translating in the companies where you operate or you serve. It also creates impact on the communities where you belong. Today, outside handing over the trophy as sign of recognition, we would also like to share with you the vision on how we can move forward, we hope for you to add voice and amplify the changes we need to make to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment within and outside your businesses, companies, organizations, households and to other communities as well,” she said.

The event kicked off with special messages from key program partners, including the European Union. Mr. Christoph Wagner, EU Delegation Head of Cooperation, reiterated how the EU prioritizes gender equality, women empowerment, and socio-economic development and the role women play in accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Companies, and the private sector in general, can play a crucial role in empowering women. But this is not self-evident. You have shown the way and have provided best practices - in the marketplace, your own work environment and the communities you’re working with. Thank you for that!” he said.

EU Gender Champion and Her Excellency Saskia de Lang, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Netherlands in the Philippines, said, “We recognize that to better address the gender gap, we need women to represent women’s interests and ideas; to make decisions; to take the lead. Therefore, having women leaders such as yourselves in corporate leadership opens opportunities for many more women. We need to recognize that gender gaps and barriers still exist and if left unchecked and unchallenged, they will hamper inclusivity and progress.”

Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Gustavo Gonzalez as keynote speaker highlighted that the Philippines is making a substantive progress in gender equality, compared to other Asian countries. He also shared that the new normal is presenting new opportunities for gender equality and women empowerment. “We have to harness such opportunities to foster more inclusive business models. Experience shows that gender equality not only improve working environments but also enhances innovation and reinforces sustainability. In this transformative process, we should not forget to incorporate and address the needs of women, as workers, business leaders and decision makers,” he shared.

WEPs Awards 2020 & 2021 Winners in a focused group discussion called “Winners Rising Up to the WEPs Challenge” to discuss about contributions and actions need to achieve Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in business, workplace, and marketplace.

 Creating the path ahead

Mesina challenged all the winners by facilitating a group discussion called “Winners Rising Up to the WEPs Challenge” for them to brainstorm and share ideas for collaboration that could contribute further to the achievements of five out of the 17 SDGs including SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The discussion gave way for winners to create action items for collaboration and benchmarking, while encouraging each other to replicate their successful programs across different communities.

Jourgie Hornilla, HR Manager at Shell Business Operations in Manila, shared key pointers such as the importance of setting themselves as role models for other women and educating not just women, but also men, to help remove unconscious biases in the workplace.

Representatives from Investing in Women, Philippine National Bank, and Procter & Gamble summarized their recommendations in four points: the importance of leadership commitment in gender equality to be able to achieve programs and plans; how crucial data is in decision-making, creating action plans, benchmarking, and measuring success; why sharing best practices is a must in order to learn from other successful businesses; and why gender inclusivity it is not always about the bottom-line but also about retention of and growing the best talents in the workplace.

Breaking lavender ceilings

In 2020 and 2021, WEPs Awards honored gender equality champions who continued to set the bar high for solutions on gender equality. The awards aim to encourage more businesses to push for programs, policies, and participation of women in decision-making and to create more opportunities for more women to feel empowered and capable to lead.

It had received over 300 applications in 2 years and named thirty (30) companies and businesses awarded to date. BAYO, which bagged as the Champion of Gender Responsive Marketplace category in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific region and 2nd runner up for Community Engagement and Partnership category in this year’s WEPs Awards.

“Through UN Women, we can all share our common stories to create a stronger voice and narrative. From there, we can have a stronger spring board for all of these actions to start a similar course. It would really help to organize discussions, coming up with set of ambassadors to be in the core front for communication. But, it is not enough for us to tell them what they can do, it’s also good that they [the companies] are prepared and knowledgeable so they can be in that position to also be pervasive to the change we are encouraging them to do,” shared Ms. Anna Lagon, CEO and Co- Founder of BAYO.

The Women’s Empowerment Principles is a framework introduced by the UN Women and UN Global Compact in 2010 to stir action from the private sector to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in leadership, workplace, marketplace and community. #MayForeverOnline: Children and youth leaders led the orientation about online safety

Adhering to local hygiene protocols and social distancing, children in some World Vision communities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao gathered to teach and learn about online safety to prevent online abuses and sexual exploitation of children.

Using the hashtag term “#MayForeverOnline”, children and youth leaders led the orientation about online safety, reminding their peers to be extra careful when posting information on the Internet and social media.

“The #MayForeverOnline campaign is our way of reaching out and telling other children and youth to be extra careful when posting information online because anything we post online are there forever even if we deleted them from our social media pages,” Francis, 21, World Vision’s National Children’s Federation president, explains referring to the digital footprints that leave trails on the Internet which can be used by other people to steal personal information and take advantage of a child.

The children’s campaign is in response to the growing population of Internet users in the country. According to the Dateportal.com report entitled “Digital 2021: The Philippines”, there are 73.91 million Internet and 89 million social media users in the Philippines.

The same report also showed that Filipinos spend an average of 4 hours and 15 minutes on social media, making the Philippines as the top country with the most time spent on the internet and social media. The leased obsessed with social media are the Japanese, spending only 51 minutes online on average.

The growing trends in social media usage also pose risks to children. A report of the International Justice Mission (IJM), an international organization that protects people in poverty from violence, showed the Philippines with 237 new referred cases of online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) between 2010-2017 compared with three other leading countries: Mexico with 27 referred cases, Brazil with 19, and India with 18. The country also has the largest known source of sexually exploited children online.

IJM, World Vision and Compassion International, another Christian child-focused organization, are currently working together to prevent and end sexual exploitation of Filipino children in an advocacy campaign called It Takes a World to End Online Sexual Exploitation of Children.

The main highlight of #MayForeverOnline campaigns are the creative ways children answered two major questions: “What are the things you don’t want to remain online forever?” and “What advice would you give to other children about online safety?”

Children’s groups answered the questions in slogans, games and colorful posters. In one slogan, a group of children reminded everyone that “Children are not dolls. They have dignity and feelings to preserve.” The children’s group from Bukidnon calls to stop malicious content about children that are being posted online.

Another group of children from Leyte reminded other children to be aware of children and youth are posting online to avoid being cyberbullied. “Never post negative comments to avoid being bullied online,” the children’s written reminder states.

A group of children from Camarines Norte, likewise, wrote similar reminders, and advised children to “Treat Internet as Internet not as diary.”

The National Children’s Month is held in the Philippines every November. The month-long celebration commemorates the country’s adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly in November 1989.

realme officially unveiled three world’s-first technologies at the realme GT 2 Series Special Event today

realme, the world’s fastest-growing smartphone brand and the PH’s no. 1 smartphone brand for 2021, officially unveiled three world’s-first technologies at the realme GT 2 Series Special Event held today, December 20.

Relentless tech and design innovations have always been the cornerstones of realme's rapid growth globally. As the brand’s first and most premium flagship lineup, the GT 2 series features three industry firsts: a back cover made of bio-polymer material, a 150° ultra-wide camera, and realme's Innovation Forward communication.

World’s first bio-polymer material with Master Design

The realme GT 2 Pro features a minimalist, sustainability-focused design inspired by paper. Created by renowned Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, this "Paper Tech Master Design" makes the realme GT 2 Pro the world’s first smartphone designed with bio-based materials.

The realme GT 2 Pro's back cover uses a bio-polymer material that serves as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil raw materials that contribute to global warming. The SABIC bio-based material has passed not only the ISCC International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, but also various stringent environmental regulation standards, such as REACH, RoHS, and EPEAT.

In addition, realme's new box design has reduced the overall plastic ratio from 21.7% in the previous generation, to 0.3% for this model.

World’s first 150°ultra-wide Camera with fisheye mode

Ultra-wide-angle lenses are often used in landscape and building photography as they allow the camera to capture a wider perspective in each photo. The realme GT 2 Pro is the first smartphone to offer a 150° ultra-wide camera. This ultra-wide camera expands the phone's field of view by 278% compared to the main camera's 84° field.

realme also developed the world’s first fisheye mode for smartphones on the GT 2 Pro. This mode can produce a strong perspective or an ultra-long depth of field effect. With a large field of view, the overall picture becomes even more visually appealing and allows for more creative possibilities.

Innovation Forward Communication with Stable Signal and 360°NFC

The realme GT 2 Pro is equipped with an Antenna Array Matrix System consisting of three technologies: the world's first ultra-wide-band antenna switching technology (HyperSmart), a Wi-Fi Enhancer, and 360° near-field communication (NFC) technology.

realme's HyperSmart antenna switching technology is designed with 12 wrap-around antennas that cover all sides of the phone and support mainstream bands in almost all directions, all with the same signal strength. This allows the GT 2 Pro to intelligently evaluate the signal strength of all antennas and automatically select the one with the best signal.

In terms of the Wi-Fi network enhancer, the symmetrical Wi-Fi antenna is designed to ensure more balanced signal strength around the phone. In realme's tests, this design improved signal stability by 20% compared to the asymmetrical Wi-Fi antenna design.

The realme GT 2 Pro also integrates the top two cellular antennas with an NFC signal transceiver function, increasing the sensing area by 500% and the sensing distance by 20%. The entire upper part of the GT 2 Pro senses NFC signals in either direction, facilitating the use of NFC for swiping cards or smartphones.

To know more about realme’s latest world’s-first technologies, be sure to stay tuned at the realme PH Facebook page at http://facebook.com/realmePhilippines or visit the official realme website at https://www.realme.com/ph/
