Wine Lab at Magosaburo Wine Lounge.

The story of wines, like human beings, does not begin and end simply with their color. Red, white, and tawny refer to just one aspect of wine, and to limit the dimensions and complexity of this splendid drink to a single facet is irrational.

If anything, wine is best described by the region it hails from: the Bordeauxs, the Ports, the Champagnes, all the great vintages from Napa, the wine country in Australia, and other unique locations across the world. In as much as people are inextricably tied to their country of origin, for instance, so too is a good glass of Syrah.

It takes a truly devoted team of wine lovers – not only sommeliers, connoisseurs, and gourmands, but also everyday aficionados – to establish a true haven that showcases the varied elements of wine. Far beyond an impressive and diverse selection, both art and science must come together in the same way the food perfectly paired with a wine forms an unforgettable taste experience.

This was the unrelenting vision that the people behind Magosaburo shared when they conceived the Mago Wine Lounge. Already renowned for taking high-end Japanese cuisine to the next level, Magosaburo decided to take the same pioneering approach in building what is perhaps the most state-of-the-art destination to serve fine wine.

Abigail Tabuchi-Sumida, President of INSHOCK Philippines — the company behind Magosaburo and the Mago Wine Lounge — noted that “it was quite a challenge when Executive Chef Motomatsu and I brainstormed to create the menu”. Indeed, they found out that wine pairing is an exact discipline, involving a precise blending of tastes, textures, and aromas. The two spent countless hours determining the dynamics between each bottle of wine and dish. “We had several breakthrough moments, that’s for sure,” Sumida enthused. “In the end, when the flavors come together, it is very clear that our efforts paid off,” she continued.

Lending his vast expertise to this venture is internationally renowned wine connoisseur Denny Wang, who serves as executive consultant to the Mago Wine Lounge. “The Mago Wine Lounge is predicated on a single, underlying thought: enhancing a wine lover’s experience by engaging all of the senses,” he said. “As such, the Mago Wine Lounge was built entirely with wine in mind, from the décor, the cuisine, to the lighting. We had to create a space that complemented the superb selection that we individually hand-picked,” he explained further.

Finding an ideal balance between a modern feel and laid-back comfort was likewise a priority for the Mago Wine Lounge. “The technology that we’ve adopted in order to ensure the quality of our wines is truly cutting-edge,” Tabuchi-Sumida pointed out. “Every step from handling, storage, and even serving follows a strict quality control protocol. We are as much a wine lab as we are a wine lounge,” she said with slight amusement.

The Mago Wine Lounge is located on the second floor of Magosaburo, at Fort Pointe 2 (The Fort Strip). For inquiries or reservations, you may contact 856-0795 []

Punk Your Chucks, Bring on the Art and Bling.

Punk Your Chucks, Bring on the Art and Bling.

I have been a loyalist partner to my chucks for decades, as of this writing, and a proud owner of 5 Chuck Taylors in white, black, red, pink and now a newly bought dirty white pair, the sneakers that I love to go through all the facets of my life. I love it dirty, the dirtier the zanier, the fader the color  the better, it gives me that kind of high.   When I discovered that renowned Filipino komik book artists Kajo Baldisimo and Bow Guerrero of Trese and Dark Colony fame, respectively could do their komik wonders to my pair of sneakers by live painting it, then I decided it is time to bring on the art and make my pair a one –of- a -kind chucks that  is exclusively handpainted by the duo.
Converse Philippines recently had a tie-up made under the “Shoes Buy Art, Sneakers Create It” campaign of Converse, at their flagship store in Glorietta on September 21, 2013 to launch their in-store-customization area “Punk Your Chucks” that showcases how sneakers can be a natural medium to create wearable art.
“Converse has always recognized the inherent creativity of our core market,” said Eli Bonsol, Converse Advertising and Marketing Manager. “Our most iconic sneaker, the Chuck Taylor All-Star, has always embodied this aspect of the brand—the fact that it is literally made of canvas makes it perfect backdrop to express your own style.”

For Bow Guerrero, creator and artist of Dark Colony, the bond between Pinoy Komiks and Converse is an intuitive one. “Pinoys love art, and express this love in truly imaginative ways,” he explained. “The timeless, laid-back style of the Converse All-Star really appeals to komiks lovers- not to mention that it is customizable in so many different ways.”
A customization area was set up at the venue, which allowed visitors and Converse enthusiasts to alter their shoes  according to their taste. Markers, pens and even metal studs were on-hand to achieve that perfect punk rock vibe.
Others Converse stores across the nation will soon be having their own “Punk Your Chucks” areas, where you can trick out your Chucks, Cons, or Jack Purcells- or if you don’t have a pair yet you can check out all the designs at the flagship store in Glorietta 2, Makati. You can also check out the punk’d Chucks by the artists of Trese and Dark Colony in the flagship store now. Log on to www.facebook.com/Converse Philippines for updates on the next event.

Watsons Switch and Save values.

Watsons Switch and Save campaign feature new celebrities and real customers

I have always been conscious about two things—health and budget.
Because of this, I have always been on the lookout for “reasonably-priced” vitamins, and since I’ve worked in a hospital in the past, I’m a bit more mindful about potency and quality so I stay away from buying at just any pharmacy.
Two of my more common purchases are vitamin C and Grapeseed vitamins, which I buy from Watsons since I made the “switch” last year.
I’ve also been a very happy shopper as the more I visit Watsons, the more I discover new items that fit my weekly budget. My number 1 favorite is their Cosmo Skin that is now on sale at php500 off.
Last week, I was fortunate enough to be invited to a Watsons event to introduce their new ambassadors for their “Switch and Save” campaign and learn more about their exciting products.
With Watsons Label products, smart shoppers can get much-needed personal care items at a lower cost, allowing for hefty savings without comprising quality.
Watsons offers a bevy of products under its own label, from toothbrushes to tissue paper and everything in between. A partnership with United Laboratories Inc. also allows Asia’s number one drug store to offer top-quality vitamins and medicines at wallet-friendly prices through Watsons Health Packs. Similarly, Watsons Compliance Packs bundle medicines for diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and antibiotics up to 80% savings versus leading brands.
Viki Encarnacion, Marketing Director of Watsons Philippines, told us “Watsons recognizes that to be truly beautiful, one must also be healthy. Consistent with Watsons Label products our Health and Compliance Packs offer great quality at affordable prices, giving you fantastic value for money.”
The enormous value gained from Watsons Label products has convinced more than a few people to make the switch and save, including personalities like Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Patty Laurel. While Prieto-Valdes has discovered the efficacy and convenience afforded by Watsons medicines, Laurel finds that the number of trips she’s been going on has steadily increased ever since she made the switch to Watsons Label. This is thanks in large part to the savings she’s made on their wide range of essential vitamins and minerals.

Celebrities make the Switch!
Joining a star-studded line-up composed of Divine Lee, Victor Basa, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, and Patty Laurel, the latest Watsons endorsers look forward to pushing the brand’s present movement to even greater achievement.
Given its February 2012 beginnings, Watsons Switch & Save has exhibited increasing popularity over the past few months. Its escalating success comes from the thrust of helping the average Filipino shopper spend less on daily essentials, to splurge on things they love.

“I switched to Watsons because it is actually a place I often visit for my needs,” says Iya. They provide great quality daily essentials that allow me to save a few pesos here and there, which at the end of the year do all add up.”

Iya sums up her experience perfectly, “It’s always great to have a new family and
stand behind something that you believe in and that’s especially relevant, given today’s economic climate.”

“I think it’s great to be the face of such a campaign,” says Mikael. “Personally, I've always been value conscious and have always tried to be very efficient. That's similar to what Switch & Save is all about,” he adds.

“In all my shows, I have a clean shaven look, so I shave almost every day. It’s a super essential in my case,” he says.

Real People
Watsons has also changed the perception of many people as more and more shoppers are beginning to appreciate the benefits of the Switch and Save campaign.
Alfonzo Crespo, a Medical Clerk shared, “I’ve never been the type who buys lots of personal care products because most of them are overpriced. Then, I came upon Watsons Label products! The quality is great and they are affordable.”
For student Nicolette Tan; “Watsons Label products are possibly the best bargains I get anywhere. And because of the savings I get to buy other things I like.”
Self-confessed Beauty Junkie Janine Paguasan, adds;  “I never go out without blow-drying my hair. So when my old hair dryer broke, I was devastated. I felt like every day was a bad hair day. That’s why I was overjoyed when I happened upon Watsons’ very affordable and effective hair dryer. Now, my bad hair days are over thanks to Watsons Label products!”

The savings made by switching to Watsons Label products can go up to 70 percent, letting customers save a significant amount of money on their day-to-day goods. Getting that shiny new laptop or gorgeous pair of shoes becomes a lot easier with the bargains made through the Watsons Label.

Bio-Oil the Anti Ageing Miracle Oil.

How Lara got her curves back and "stretchmarks” out.

Back when I used to assist OB-Gyne’s in prepping up patients (both for normal delivery or caesarean section) at a tertiary hospital, a lot of the would-be mothers had three common concerns—deliver a healthy baby, regain their post-maternal figure and how to get rid of stretchmarks.

Those nasty, annoying and dark stretchmarks that accumulate in the nine months of their pregnancy. The most common suggestion was a brand of cocoa butter that came in a small tube but all the raves about cocoa butter stopped because you had to apply it at the start of your pregnancy and not post pregnancy.

Thus, new moms started a seemingly neverending search for a viable and safer alternative with the most frustrated ones even resorting to Tattoos to conceal those stretchmarks.

According to Wikipedia, stretch marks or striae (singular stria), as referred by dermatologists, are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. Stretch marks formed during pregnancy, usually during the last trimester, and usually on the belly, but also commonly occurring on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back and buttocks, are known as striae gravidarum.[

And as actress and former Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman confessed, even former beauty queens are not exempted from this problem. After giving birth to her first baby Noah Lamar last November 10, 2012, Precious said besides working out to get her figure back, she was also researching for ways on how to remove her stretch marks.

Thankfully, her search led to her discovery of Bio-Oil.

“I started using Bio-Oil a few months back and I started to notice changes in just three weeks, and it was even my trainers who pointed it out and they asked me what I was using,” Precious told guests at the launch of Bio Oil held at the Edsa Shang-rila Hotel last September 18, 2013.

Wearing an orange Grecian back-baring gown, Precious was a picture of confidence as she sashayed to the stage flaunting her slimmer and more flawless figure after being introduced as Bio-Oil’s brand ambassador.

Besides Precious, several respectable OB Gynes from different Metro Manila hospitals, served as resource persons to explain how Bio Oil can help effectively lighten stretch marks and that expectant mothers can use it as early as their second trimestral to help prevent those dreaded dark lines.

They also suggested that moms should avoid scratching their stomachs to prevent the striae that look like bands, stripes, or lines for occurring.

Bio-Oil works thanks to its formulation of combined plant extracts and vitamins suspended in an oil base. It contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, which changes the formulation’s overall consistency, making it light and non-greasy. This ensures that the goodness contained in the vitamins and plant extracts is easily absorbed.  Bio-Oil is also effective against ageing and dehydrated skin.

RIPD : To Protect and Serve the Living.

Look Sharp, Partner: Costume Design

The dynamic duo of R.I.P.D. Roy Pulsifer (JEFF BRIDGES) and and Nick Walker (RYAN REYNOLDS), brings together two era’s of men in uniform--a deputy of the Wild West, and a modern day police cop.

But dressing up these law enforcers proved to be an enjoyable one for Costume designer Susan Lyall.

Having previously  worked with Schwentke on two of his previous films, Red and Flightplan, Lyall had the task of not only creating the costumes of the film’s contemporary characters but also Royab’s Old West sheriff and a multitude of R.I.P.D. cops—officers from almost every period within the past few centuries.

Considering that whatever era an officer dies in marks the era of clothing he or she wears for eternity, the producers and writers took great pleasure in adding their suggestions to incorporate some iconic cop references into the mix.

Lyall welcomed the process, which surprisingly invited considerable research.  She states: “Every member of the R.I.P.D. has a visual reference attached to him or her.  Some, audiences will pick out right away [i.e., Serpico, Popeye Doyle and Cagney & Lacey], but the rest of the looks came from real research.

“It was actually liberating because it didn’t have to be Boston-police specific,” she adds.  “We could choose a police uniform from any state or decade.  We had to create a universe and create rules of R.I.P.D., just in order to function for ourselves.  They’re not rules that are necessarily apparent to the audience, but the rules existed for us to limit our universe and find a way to kind of make sense of what was a very open concept.”

While Nick would remain dressed in 2013-appropriate Boston Police Department gear, Roy was a bit trickier.  For the grizzled cop, Lyall brought in hints of rock-and-roll imagery—from the wraparound sunglasses to the cut of his vest and long sheriff’s duster.  The rogue sensibility offers a visual link to the graphic novel’s aesthetic as well as indicates that Roy is the longest-serving officer there (to Proctor’s alternate annoyance/enjoyment).  Indeed, his multiple infractions during his tour of duty just keeps extending his time with the R.I.P.D.

The Rest In Peace Department is tasked to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of creatures who refuse to move peacefully into the afterlife.

Veteran sheriff (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous souls disguised among the living as ordinary people.  His mission?  To arrest and bring to justice a special brand of outlaws trying to escape final judgment by hiding among the unsuspecting on Earth.

Once the wise-cracking Roy is assigned former rising-star detective Nick Walker (Reynolds) as his junior officer, the new partners have to turn grudging respect into top-notch teamwork.  When they uncover a plot that could end life as we know it, two of the R.I.P.D.’s finest must restore the cosmic balance...or watch as the tunnel to the afterlife begins sending angry spirits the very wrong way.

Starring alongside Bridges and Reynolds in R.I.P.D. are KEVIN BACON (X-Men: First Class) as Bobby Hayes, Nick’s partner before he’s taken out in the line of duty; MARY-LOUISE PARKER (television’s Weeds) as Proctor, Nick and Roy’s tough-as-nails bureau chief in the R.I.P.D.; and STEPHANIE SZOSTAK (Iron Man 3) as Julia, Nick’s widow who must find out the reason behind his untimely departure before she is forced to play an unwelcome role in the world’s end.

“RIPD” opens August 21, 2013 in theaters nationwide is released and distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corporation

THE GREAT GATSBY” STEPS BACK IN TIME IN DAZZLING 3D

From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann (“Moulin Rouge!,” “William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet”) comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby.
In his adaptation, the filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in 3 Dimensions, weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald’s text and relevant to now. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role.
“The Great Gatsby” follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
Academy Award® nominee DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire starring as Nick Carraway; Oscar® nominee Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton as Daisy and Tom Buchanan; Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke as Myrtle and George Wilson; and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. Indian film legend Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of Meyer Wolfshiem.
Nick Carraway, the narrator (who, in the novel itself, is writing the story of The Great Gatsby – “Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book…”), describes his neighbor—the shadowy and seemingly corrupt but ultimately aspirational and inspiring Jay Gatsby—as a man with “some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life…an extraordinary gift for hope…such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again.” For almost a century, the story of that Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald between Long Island, New York and St. Raphael, France, about 15 miles from Cannes, and between 1923 and 1924, has moved through time and space, and has found audiences across geographies.
Writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann first encountered The Great Gatsby on the screen, in 1974, in remote Heron’s Creek, Australia, where his father ran the gas station and, briefly, the cinema.
Cut to 2004. Cold, northern Russia. The clatter of train tracks. The flicker of light through the frosty window. “I had just wrapped ‘Moulin Rouge!’ and was off on ‘a debriefing adventure’ Luhrmann recalls. “Crazily enough, I’d decided to take the Trans-Siberian Express from Beijing, across northern Russia, and then on to Paris to meet my wife and newly born daughter, Lilly.” And it was in Siberia, in a sardine-box of a cabin, that Luhrmann again re-encountered The Great Gatsby, this time as an audio book, one of two he had with him.
“I poured some wine, looked out and saw Siberia racing by, and started listening. It was four o’clock in the morning before I fell asleep,” he recalls. “The next day, I could not wait for night to come, to get back in my little box, pour the second bottle of wine, and listen to the last part. At the end of it I realized three things: One, that I hadn’t really known The Great Gatsby at all; two, that it was structurally really concise; and three, there’s a really great film in it. Of course there’s a huge inherent challenge—the expression of Nick Carraway’s inner life, his inner voice—but it’s an incredibly cinematic book. I thought, ‘I’d like to make this movie one day.’” And so, as the train beat on against the rusty tracks, the first imaginings of Luhrmann’s adaption of The Great Gatsby were born.
“I think The Great Gatsby feels more relevant now than ever,” producer Douglas Wick offers. “In a time with a glittering but unreliable economy, and a prevalent sense that we have lost our way, Gatsby could have been written yesterday. But it wasn’t. The book takes you to another time and place, a lost world of blinding allure, of extravagant hope and crashing dreams, which we knew Baz, more than anyone imaginable, could deliver for an audience.”
Opening across the Philippines on May 17 in Digital 3D and regular format, “The Great Gatsby” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
