realme 12+ 5G: The Plus is in the details

It’s not every day that you get invited to an magazine cover photoshoot and even more extraordinary to see your portrait being displayed at an exhibit. But this was exactly what realme Philippines treated us to as part of their unveiling of the realme 12 series.

In keeping with their "Be a Portrait Master" campaign, we were invited to Studio J 2.0 in Sta. Mesa last month to have our photos taken by a professional photographer—but instead of using a DSLR setup, they used only the realme 12 smartphone.

Here are the results.

Amazing right?

You probably saw a lot of bloggers and influencers posting their “magazine covers” on social media, but that was actually just a teaser. The big surprise happened at the launch itself as realme created several exhibit sections – and instead of celebrities they actually chose some of our photos to place alongside portraits of Kathryn Bernardo herself!

I actually saw my photo on the ceiling and I couldn’t believe it!  Truth be told it was not just a proud moment, but it also made me feel like a valued media partner of the brand. In our profession, gratitude means a lot and even those little things matter a lot—which is a big plus! Much like the realme 12+ it’s the details that make this smartphone quite special.

SEEING THE LITTLE DETAILS

The realme 12+ 5G replaces the Pro variant which is usually released alongside the Pro+ variant. And just like its sibling, it’s cameras are the main selling point of this smartphone.

The realme 12+ 5G has a triple rear camera setup at the back composed of a 50MP SonyLYT600 main sensor with an aperture of f/1.88, + 8MP Wide Angle camera with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 2MP macro sensor. Up front, we get a 16MP selfie camera.

The flagship level main 50MP SonyLYT 600 OIS Portrait Camera belongs to a new line of sensors from Sony that fall under a similar class to Sony IMX Sensors, these are well-known for their sensor sizes that allow a high level of light intake that allows it to easily produce great-looking, well-lit photos.

The sensor size is 1/1.95”. It has a 26mm focal length and an f/1.88 Aperture. This camera also Supports Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and has up to 2x In-Sensor Zoom and Cinematic 2x Portrait Mode. Just like the realme 12 Pro+ 5G it is also equipped with the “Master Portrait Filters.” Unlike the regular filters which we saw in previous phones, these are specially made and inspired by movies. Not only that these were customized through the help of Oscar Award Winner for Best Cinematography Claudio Miranda.

The three special filters include “Journey” Inspired by the ”Life of Pi.” This filter has yellow tones and high contrast colors to create a ”dream-like” tone. The next is “Memory” which is inspired by “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This filter depicts a calm and capable vibe with cold tones and low-saturation colors. Lastly there’s “Maverick” which is inspired by none other than “Top Gun: Maverick” with yellow-green tones, high contrast, and high noise to create a retro film-like vibe.

After testing it out for the past few weeks I was very happy with the results and it has quickly become my favorite phone for taking selfies, because if you’ve ever used a realme phone, it can make you look good without looking to much like AI generated (unless you want to of course) The main camera was surprisingly good especially in bright and good lighting and I was able to get clear and detailed images. I did notice a dip in quality in less than ideal lighting but something you can still use with a bit of editing. Or you can use nightmode to boost the colors if the scene is actually too dark.

As realme promised, portraits taken by the realme 12+ 5G are really quite impressive for its price range. You can even shoot at 2x zoom and get the same quality as well as the option to blur the background using Portrait Mode. The 2x zoom is very useful for food photos so that you can get rid of the annoying hand shadow.

LUXURY WATCH DESIGN

When I unboxed the realme 12+ 5G and saw the phone for the first time, I was really stunned by that camera module. It was huge to say the least but it deserved the attention. This time realme collaborated with International Luxury Watch Design Master Ollivier SavĂ©o who has worked with Swiss brands including Rolex, Roger Dubuis, Piaget, Breitling, and Quentin. Taking elements such as the Polished Sunburst Dial, Golden Fluted Bezel, and 3D Jubilee Bracelet that unique back of the realme 12+ 5G will instantly remind you of those luxury watch brand. These elements are complimented by the premium Vegan Leather Back finish in a shade of either beige or green. Both of which are great choices. This was the first phone I had which had a vegan leather back, and it was love at first touch. I don’t want to go back to those smooth ‘glass-tic’ finishes again. The build quality is also exceptional, with an extremely thin profile measuring just 7.87mm and a width of 7.4mm. It only weighs 190 grams and the flat sides make it easy to handle.

FHD+ SUPER AMOLED DISPLAY

The display of the realme 12+ 5G is a 6.67” FHD+ AMOLED with a 120Hz Refresh Rate and a 240Hz Touch Sampling Rate. Making it even nice to look at is its very narrow bezels also that result to a 92.65% Screen-To-Body Ratio. It has a 100% DCI-P3 Color Gamut and reaches up to 2,000 Nits of Brightness, making it still usable even under direct sunlight. A ‘Sunlight Display’ is a technology where the display automatically adjusts dynamic contrast in order to improve viewing under direct sunlight, save power, and improve picture quality. It also supports up to 4,096 levels of brightness for ease of use no matter how dim or dark the surrounding area is for eye protection.

Protecting the screen is a 0.68mm Secondary Tempered High Strength Glass and it supports Rainwater Smart Touch, a feature that intelligently detects if there is presence of liquids like water or rain water on the display, or even wet hands, then improves touch input accuracy for it.

PLUS PERFORMANCE

In terms of performance, the Realme 12+ 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset, coupled with an octa-core CPU that reaches speeds of up to 2.6GHz. This, along with the ARM Mali-G68 MC4 GPU, ensures smooth multitasking and gaming experiences. The device offers a flagship-level 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, with the option to extend the RAM further, thanks to Dynamic RAM Expansion. This feature allows for efficient handling of multiple apps simultaneously without compromising on speed or performance.

Battery life is another area where the Realme 12+ 5G excels. Equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, the phone supports 67W SUPERVOOC Charge technology, enabling rapid charging from 20% to full in less than an hour. This ensures the device can last almost an entire day on a single charge, even with heavy usage including photography, gaming, and video playback. This battery can last up to 473.11 hours of Standby, 29.28 hours of phone calls, 17.02 hours of YouTube streaming, 20.49 hours of chatting on WhatsApp, 19.46 hours on Twitter or X, 77.32 hours of music playback, and up to 7 or 8 hours of continuous gaming. Its fast-charging solution can top up the device up to 50% in 19 minutes, and about an hour to fully charge it 100percent..

PLUS FEATURES

The Realme 12+ 5G also includes several extra features that enhance its usability and appeal. It comes with dual stereo speakers offering a high-quality audio experience, and a 3.5mm audio jack, a rarity in modern smartphones nowadays. Additionally, an in-display fingerprint scanner provides quick and secure access. Plus it also has an IP54 Dust & Water Resistance for protection against splashes.

The brand said it the device has undergone 320+ Stringent Tests inclusive of 4,000 booting and rebooting, 500,000 times of clicking the power button / 150,000 times of clicking on the volume rocker buttons / 20,000 times of plugging and un-plugging the USB cable to make sure it can easily survive the daily wear and tear for years.

The realme 12+ 5G is another excellent midrange device from realme, it has a great camera, a large clear display and that luxury watch finish makes it standout from the competition. It also has a lots of ‘plus’ features making a contender in its price range and something you should definitely consider if you want an elegant looking phone with a very capable camera system.

The realme 12+ 5G comes in two stunning colors as well: Pioneer Green and Navigator Beige. It is available in two storage variants: 12GB+256GB and 8GB+256GB priced at P19,999 and P17,999 respectively.
