Huawei launches the latest addition to its lineup of MatePad tablets, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S

Huawei has announced the launch of the highly-anticipated, latest addition to its lineup of MatePad tablets, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S. Now available for pre-order until July 4, 2024, the new HUAWEI MatePad tablet combines unparalleled performance with sleek design, just in time for back-to-school season.

The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S is designed to meet the various user needs, featuring Huawei’s PaperMatte Display, which delivers a clear, crisp, and eye-friendly viewing experience, perfect for students and young professionals. The device is a powerhouse for work tasks with its PC-level productivity features, without the heavy weight of a computer. Creative users will appreciate the realistic paper-like look and texture of the tablet, enhancing the satisfaction of the creation process. Huawei’s latest tablet offering helps users stay productive anytime, anywhere.

Vibrant Viewing Experience That’s Easy on the Eyes

Tablets have long been preferred for work and leisure use due to their portability. However, prolonged use of digital screens often causes visual fatigue, leading users to opt for e-readers with electronic paper displays. Huawei has set out to redefine the tablet experience with the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S.

The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S, available in two stylish colors: Violet and Space Gray, is the first Huawei tablet to feature the upgraded PaperMatte Display technology. Perfect for students diving into hours of reading or young professionals taking on a day full of video conferences and document reviews, Huawei’s PaperMatte Display gives users a vibrant viewing experience while protecting their eyes. The PaperMatte Display is equipped with advanced nanoscale anti-glare etching and a reduced reflected light interference by 99%.

With multi-layer nanoscale magnetron optical coating to soften light emission and minimize surface reflectivity by 2%, providing users vision protection without sacrificing immersive and high-resolution display. The HUAWEI MatePad received Low Visual Fatigue Premium Performance Certification from SGS as well as Reflection-Free, Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution), and Flicker-Free standards certifications from TÜV Rheinland for its PaperMatte Display and eye-friendly properties.

Users can now enjoy their favorite e-books for hours on end or write lengthy reports without worrying about eye strain. The PaperMatte Display delivers a true-to-life color display, adjusting the brightness, hue, and color temperature to capture the aesthetic and comfort of reading ink on paper. Enhanced by the FullView Display feature, it ensures exceptional eye comfort while providing an unparalleled viewing experience.

Smart and Powerful Performance for Enhanced PC-Like Productivity

The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S combines powerful performance with portability. It comes with SuperHub, enabling smooth screen projection in offline meetings and easy annotation for virtual meetings. Designed to cater to unique user needs, including note-taking for students and young professionals, the tablet features productivity apps like HUAWEI Notes, which now includes quick gestures, a refreshed home screen and editing screen, and a new lasso tool for selecting and color-coding text. The Note Replay feature lets users capture and review audio alongside their notes, making it ideal for meetings and lectures.

Equipped with PC-level tools and apps, the new HUAWEI MatePad tablet also does heavy-lifting productivity performance that rivals traditional computers. PC-level WPS Office 2.0, available on the device, functions more similarly to desktop versions of the applications versus the mobile versions on other tablets. Students can effortlessly draft their paper on the go, while professionals can finalize an important business proposal while commuting with Huawei’s newest MatePad offering.

The WPS Office on the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S allows users to add headers and footers on word documents, insert videos on powerpoint slides, and create pivot tables on excel. Users can now seamlessly transition between writing reports, creating presentations, and conducting research, all from a single portable device.

Paper-like Reading, Drawing, and Writing

The all-new HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S sets a new standard for paper-like creative experiences. Huawei has minimized the hassle of frequent device cleaning with an ultra-hydrophobic, oil-resistant film to prevent fingerprint stains, making touch controls more enjoyable, and freeing users from having to frequently clean the device. This provides users with a comfortable experience whether they are browsing the web, watching videos, reading an ebook, or making art.

The nano-level etching technique used on the screen replicates realistic paper texture. Paired with the HUAWEI M-Pencil (3rd generation) through NearLink technology, the HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S mimics the sound and feel of pencil on paper. NearLink technology allows for higher accuracy, more pressure levels, and lower latency. Creative users can sketch out their ideas directly on the screen with the precision and feel of traditional paper, while writers can jot down their thoughts as naturally as if they were using a notebook.

This goes perfectly with the new GoPaint app, a user-friendly painting app developed by Huawei in collaboration with the China Academy of Art. GoPaint brings a wealth of creative possibilities, perfect for aspiring artists and seasoned painters alike. The app empowers amateur artists to create artwork using realistic painting effects, fine-tuned and tested by over 1,000 professional painters. Dive into a world of artistic expression with a vast selection of over 100 brushes and a plethora of textures at users’ fingertips.

The GoPaint ensures a seamless painting experience with minimal latency and silky smooth frame rates. Users can effortlessly bring their imagination to life on a digital canvas, thanks to features like Canvas Background Pattern, Ink Wash, and smart tools such as curve correction and willow leaf. These tools are not just fancy add-ons; they are practical aids to elevate users’ artistry and streamline their creative process. For beginners, interactive tutorials and user guides are available to help understand the app’s functionalities and guide budding artists to create their masterpiece. Whether users are expert artists honing their craft or someone just beginning to explore their creative side, GoPaint is the perfect companion for creating artwork.

Igloo strengthens MSME support with Growsari partnership

From small mom-and-pop shops around the corner, sari-sari stores, and small businesses started by young entrepreneurs, the importance and impact of these micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) cannot be overstated. These businesses account for 99.5% of the total number of companies in the country and employ 62.8% of the workforce.

However, the same segment is often exposed to a wide range of risks, from theft, illnesses, or natural disasters. Compared to larger businesses, they struggle to manage these risks more due to limited resources.

Understanding how these businesses are major drivers for economic growth, regional insurtech Igloo together with Growsari, a leading B2B MSME enabler that powers Philippines sari-sari stores, introduced the Personal + Business Protection Plan that provides financial assistance to these neighborhood convenience stores in case of unwanted incidents arising from natural calamities such as floods due to heavy rain.

“Igloo and Growsari share the same goal of protecting MSMEs like sari-sari stores by offering innovative insurance solutions that will help them mitigate risks while ensuring they can continue to thrive and contribute to the growth of their communities,” said Roberto Vea, Commercial Lead at Igloo Philippines. “As we celebrate International MSME Day on June 27, we not only reaffirm our commitment to continue providing them with the tools and protection they need but champion how these businesses are the backbone of our economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and fostering community resilience.”

The Personal + Business Protection Plan provides up to P150,000 in financial coverage for accidents and up to P35,000 of cash assistance to help them protect their property or inventory in cases of flood and fire in more than 200,000 sari-sari stores in the country.

Beyond this, Igloo and Growsari are empowering these sari-sari stores to eventually extend the same protection plan to their customers and community–giving them ease of access to insurance products that can protect them and their loved ones. This is part of Igloo’s mission to provide affordable and accessible insurance for all.

“We’re not stopping there as we plan to expand the partnership to help cover their customers or sukis against unforeseen events. The goal is to provide the most comprehensive protection product for these businesses, covering not just their assets but also their human capital,” Vea added.

The Personal + Business Protection Plan is one of the latest MSME products Igloo has created with its partners. Last year it introduced NegosyoCare with GCash and Malayan–an insurance product specifically designed to protect MSMEs that provides coverage for accidents and other unwanted situations through the GInsure Marketplace.

These products further Igloo’s mission to provide underserved segments with comprehensive and affordable protection products across the region.

Dive into A24’s highest-grossing horror film “Talk To Me”

What would you do if you could communicate with the other side? This is the premise of Talk to Me, A24’s highest-grossing horror film to date.

Directed by Australian twin filmmakers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, Talk to Me has been praised for its innovative storyline and spine-chilling scares. Set in suburban Adelaide, Talk to Me introduces us to a group of friends who stumble upon an addictive and dangerous new game. Using an embalmed hand, they discover they can conjure spirits, and what starts as an exhilarating foray into the supernatural quickly spirals into a terrifying ordeal.

At the center of this chilling narrative is Mia, portrayed by the incredibly talented Sophie Wilde (whose performance in the film got her a Critics' Choice Award, among many other distinctions). A teenager grappling with the suicide of her mother, Mia is both a social outcast and the life of the party, often taking things too far as she tries to cope with her grief.

In an interview with RogertEbert.com, co-director Danny Philippou discussed how the film's most shocking moments add to the story: "It’s important to both of us that our big horror moments are grounded in character and really affect the story. We didn’t want to have shocking imagery for the sake of having it. Each of these scenes has a purpose, we build up to them, and they’re rooted in character. We do love all our shocking little scenes that we chucked in there."

Speaking with GamesRadar.com, star Sophie Wilde talked about what drew her to play Mia: "It felt like a drama to me in a lot of ways... [It’s] really exciting as an actor, to be able to play someone who gets to operate in so many different spaces as people are so multifaceted, and grief is such a multifaceted experience."

MMDA Celebrates Third Anniversary of Mobile Materials Recovery Facility

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) proudly celebrates the third anniversary of the Mobile Materials Recovery Facility (MMRF), an innovative project that has revolutionized waste management practices across Metro Manila. Launched on June 10, 2021, the MMRF initiative has already made significant strides in promoting proper waste segregation, recycling, and community involvement in environmental stewardship.

The MMRF project, tagged as “Recyclable Mo, Palit Grocery Ko,” employs a commodity exchange system where residents can trade recyclable materials such as single-use plastics for essential goods. This initiative is one of the waste diversion programs under the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP) Component 2 which aims to “Minimize Wastes in Waterways” by increasing waste diversion, and by encouraging active participation in proper waste management.

(From L-R) Mr. Jasper Manabat (Staff of Mandaluyong City Environmental Management Department), Mr. Jhonmarie Caoyong (PDO V, MMDA-SWMO), Capt. Carlito Cernal (Punong Barangay, Brgy. Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City), MMRF participant (Brgy. Addition Hills resident),  Mr. Melchor Salvador (Ex-Kagawad for Clean and Green, Brgy. Addition Hills), Mr. Melnes Garcia (PDO IV, MMDA-SWMO); and Mr. Jaydan Santos (Staff of Mandaluyong SWMO).

Personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and members of the partner community in Mandaluyong proudly showcase the Mobile Materials Recovery Facility (MMRF) during a community event. The MMRF initiative, celebrating its third anniversary, continues to promote effective waste segregation, diversion through recycling, and community engagement across Metro Manila.

In line with the objective of MMFMP, the MMRF initiative diverts waste that could otherwise reach the waterways if left uncollected. By reducing wastes in the waterways, the risk of blockages that can lead to severe flooding is minimized, thereby improving the flood management in Metro Manila. This proactive waste management approach is crucial for reducing the flood vulnerability of the region, especially during the rainy season.

Over the past three years, the MMRF project has already engaged 79 barangays from 17 local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila. With a total of 7,587 registered participants, the project has collected a total of 457,058.97 kg of recyclables, of which 361,135.17 kg were purchased by junk shops and 95,923.80 kg were brought to the MMDA-operated Solid Waste Management Facility located at the Vitas Pumping Station in Tondo, Manila. In exchange, the project has distributed goods worth PHP 1,641,971.88 to participating residents.

After three years of continuous operations, the project is now able to identify barangays that are ready to implement the MMRF commodity exchange system on their own. These barangays are being capacitated to ensure sustained implementation after system turnover. As part of its future plans, the MMDA aims to continue the operation of MMRF in barangays not yet ready for turnover and seeks additional partnerships with LGUs and private sector to further enhance the project’s sustainability.

“The success of the MMRF project over the past three years is a testament to the power of community engagement and innovative waste management solutions. We are proud of the progress we have made and are committed to furthering our efforts to create a cleaner and more sustainable Metro Manila. The support and active participation of our residents and partners have been absolutely crucial in achieving these milestones,” said MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes.

Key Achievements:

  • Barangay Engagement: 79 barangays from 17 LGUs have actively participated in the MMRF project.
  • Participant Registration: A total of 7,587 residents (2,201 males, 5,379 females, and 7 LGBTQ+ individuals) have registered and contributed to the project.
  • Recyclable Collection: The project has successfully collected 457,058.97 kg of recyclables, thereby improving waste segregation and increasing waste diversion among partner barangays
  • Goods Distribution: Recyclable materials were exchanged for goods worth PHP 1,641,971.88.
  • Partnerships: The project has formed partnerships with 42 junk shops and several private stakeholders, including Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI) and Packaging Council of the Philippines (PPCP), ensuring the sustainability of the initiative.
